Either A or B...
I understood losing Posey. I didn’t understand not making any other upgrades to the roster. Either Posey should have been retained, or other upgrades should have been made. The team did neither, and now the consequences are showing.

I'm on B for now
but he can still make the team better by adding someone at or just after the trade deadline
that said, I think he should have added someone better than O’Bust this offseason

Completely agree with this.
But there still is time…Danny HAS to do something because our bench just isn`t good enough ATM.

by the way
last night’s game is a prime example of a game where it would be nice to have had Stephon Marbury coming off the bench with Rondo being taken out of his game

We miss him and PJ. And we have the same problem at the PG position as last year when Rondo isn’t fine: House isn’t just a PG and Pruitt doesn’t play. Last year we wanted Cassell, this year he is (somehow) here, but it’s as if he wasn’t. Therefore we should:
1. Add Marbury, play Pruitt or activate Cassell
2. Add a SF that can add some of the Pose.qualities, or try and bring back Walker or Giddens to see if the answer is home (see Pruitt case)
3. Send KG or whomever to Louisiana and convince PJ to come back. Otherwise, send someone to wherever Zo is…We need a big, and we need him now
Sorry, i had to vent. Last night was an awful game.

Throughout the process I thought James Posey should have been resigned. I thought he gave the team the best chance of winning a title this season and for the next few years. I was comfortable with the contract. So yes, I do think Danny made a mistake.
I also think that Danny will have plenty of opportunities to correct that mistake this summer and the following summer …. and that he can acquire some of comparable or superior quality than James Posey with the MLE then. So I’m not that worked up about it.
After James Posey signed with New Orleans, I thought Danny’s best option was to resign Eddie House and Tony Allen and he did that. So I was very happy with his recovery play.
So yes I think he made a mistake letting Posey leave, but he made a good short term move to stem the tide and will have options in the future to fully correct the situation.

I would have loved Posey back, but I support Danny’s decision not to overpay. But his other offseason moves as far as new players have been flops. Chris Andersen/Matt Barnes would have been far more beneficial than POB/Darius Miles. I like some of the things that POB can do, but if he’s not going to get any playing time, may as well get rid of him and bring in someone who will play. Same with Cassell.

About the Posey go
Letting Posey go, was something I did not enjoy. Boston’s bench was, in my opinion, sort of a kickstart in some games last season. I loved the way they brought energy and Posey was a great addition. I really loved his playing style and he was important on D, as well as in offense. Also, he was one of the people on the bench that could get a game into gear again by either defending certain key opponents or hitting some treys.
My vote went out to the first option, yes, a mistake. However, my knowledge of the ‘why and how’ is quite limited so I’m certain there have been some ‘behind the scenes’ reasons.
But yeah, I miss Posey.

Salutations, name’s Dirk, newly registered to this site. Been lurking for a while and felt like joining in the discussions for a bit. I’m quite new to basketball but have a strong opinion about some stuff and love to discuss. Side info: I’m from Holland (Europe) following the NBA since last season, saw Boston play one single game (their first) and was instantly sold to their playstyle and the different characters, bench just as much as the starters. So, hi ;)

I think it’s just the breaks. Posey wanted too much, and Ainge probably figured he had more than a decent shot of getting somebody like PJ, Motombo, or Mourning. It just hasn’t worked out.
The options are few now. I’m for Doc to stop procrastinating and to start giving meaningful minutes to Pruitt and O’Bryant. Don’t know what to think about Tony Allen, except to hope he might play better if Pruitt was handling the ball instead of House.
- And hi, Dirk. You picked a cloudy day to surface on Celticsblog.

Cloudy indeed
Though, I am a firm believer that you need clouds every now and then to truly appreciate the sun ;)
Plus, I’m not a bandwagon jumper. I do think this team has potential, it has some great veterans, a few potentially great players, and in my opinion all it needs now is some fire off the bench. Diversity is key and right now, that’s what we lack. Posey brought two extra abilities and with a solid trade, we could get one or two players that can bring us that spark again.
We got a throw at the championship. It won’t be easy, but it’s within reach.

Of course
Posey was the best available FA by a fair margin. He’s a great fit for a contender, his game is built for that. He was also a great fit for this team as presently constructed, because his skill-set complements the flaws of the current roster. He was asking for a very reasonable contract for a player of his quality. Even in some absurd scenario, like career ending injuries for the big 3, he’d be movable, it’d never hurt the club on the long run. The “overpay” and “too many years” rationales are just nonsensical spin moves.
The other FA options besides Posey were not very good to begin with and were basically limited to bringing back House and Allen once Posey signed with NO.

Anyone who says No does not want this group of guys to win another championship I guess, and are like danny, and more concerned for the future
by TheAncientRivalry on Jan 5, 2009 9:14 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
The question was, what should Ainge have risked for another chance to win a championship? It’s easy to answer: “anything”. But then, it’s not our money, and we wouldn’t be held accountable if the team sucks in three years.
by no kidding on Jan 5, 2009 10:35 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Uh?
Money? Ainge offered Posey a 3 year contract. Are you saying that having a single additional year of a MLE contract (that would be easily tradeable as an expiring anyway) would have such a devastating offer?
It’s really hard to imagine a situation where that makes sense.
by cordobes on Jan 5, 2009 10:49 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
In hindsight, maybe I’d agree an extra year of a MLE would’ve been prudent for Posey. Then again, if Posey was on the team, maybe we’d be having exactly the same problems or equivalent ones. Maybe in three years, Posey would be totally shot as a player. Is Ainge supposed to constantly stack up expiring contracts?
I’m simply saying, Ainge made what he thought was a prudent decision, and I’m not going to criticize him or the owners on it.

hmm...can we get Posey back?
kidding…this is not a video game, i wish this was like nba2k9 or live and trying to trade back for Posey. It would be so simple..:P

Results so far...
A. 35%
B. 30%
C. 33%
…..pretty inconclusive.

Well...
… it means that 2/3 of people think Danny dropped the ball in some manner. I’d agree with that assessment. Danny has been a good GM, who had a poor off-season.

welcome dirk. we all wanted pose but it’s not our money that pays the freight. and it’s not danny’s either. we need a big and we need it now.

The thing that bothered me most...
… about not signing Posey was that it completely contradicted the “win now” philosophy Ainge seemed to adopt by getting Garnett and Allen and trading away all that youth. If you’re going to go “all in,” then go ahead and invest in a guy who helped you win that first banner. Even if you “overpay” for a season — or, worse, two — isn’t it worth it to get the one or maybe two more banners with him?
I honestly think Danny tried to get away with this one, and I partly can’t blame him. It might have bottled up money he might squirrel away for re-signing the pups, getting a free agent, etc. But to not really replace P.J. or even Cassell, it all adds up.
This ain’t last year’s bench. Anyone can see that.
