The Rookies Are Called Up
The Celtics announced today that they have recalled rookie guard J.R. Giddens and rookie forward Bill Walker from their NBA Development League affiliate Utah Flash.
Giddens appeared in 13 games for the Flash averaging 17.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.2 rebounds, 1.46 steals, a team-high 1.54 blocks all in a team-high 37.6 minutes per game. Giddens was ranked 20th in the NBDL in scoring, 13th in field goal percentage (53.5%) and seventh in blocks. The former New Mexico Lobo was the selected by the Celtics with the 30th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.
Walker appeared in 15 games for the Flash averaging a team-high 18.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.33 steals in 30.5 minutes per game. Walker was ranked 11th in the NBDL in scoring and sixth in field goal percentage (55.7%). The former Kansas State Wildcat was acquired in a draft night trade with the Washington Wizards in exchange for cash considerations.
Celtics guard Tony Allen is expected to be out at least the next two games with a right ankle sprain and did not take the team plane on the two-game road trip. Allen will miss his third straight game against Cleveland tomorrow night.
Time for some fresh legs and a chance for the rotation guys to get some extra rest. What's the worst that can happen? We lose a few games?

Giddens and Walker re both hurt and are coming to Boston for medical evaluation. That’s what Ainge said on the radio today.
Besides, what difference will it make? Rivers won’t use them anyway.

how’d they get hurt?
Bleed Green. What does it mean?
by CelticsHooRah on Jan 8, 2009 6:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Giddens hurt his right (shooting) hand. Walker tweaked his knee. Walker hurt his knee going up to block a shot. Ainge didn’t say how Giddens’ injury occurred. Neither injury is serious.

GABE WALKER GIDDENS
Pierce at the 4, KG at the 5.
I want to see the three kids for at least 10 minutes each on the floor together.
Use Pierce at the 4.
See what happens.
Doc tried this in the 05 playoffs, and the kids played great.

If they play, he’s showcasing someone for a trade.

If anyone’s being showcased these days, I have to wonder if it isn’t Glen Davis. His minutes have had me scratching my head at times.

Both Giddens and Walker? That's too much.
If they’re both not hurt, I’d almost rather Ainge only brought one of them back. In that way, Doc might actually give that one guy as much as say… a minute and a half per game. With both of them around, Doc might feel compelled to play neither.

Showcase Me!
I don’t care about the motive.
I want PT!!!!

Have to agree with Brick on this one. They’ll just be getting their DNP’s from courtside instead of Utah!

I don’t believe Danny showcases players. But it could suggest that a trade is going to happen in the next few weeks with multiple players involved.

Yup both hurt
we should keep walker im telling u right now stupid to trade him we need youth not 35 year old guys at the end of there rope now dont get me wrong the celtcis are going to be fine but if we trade one of they i want giddens gone he is a punk any way want walker getting minute soon he could be just what we need. another thing about gabe he has a real nice shot and the only reason hs fg percentage is bad because when i see him get in the game he just chucks up a three careless he could be key for the rest of the season.

We're talking about practice
Perhaps the Rooks have been called up (Walker, in particular) because of what they bring in terms or tougness and attitude during practice? Repprts had Bill Walker playing tough in practice. This team could use the enthusiasm and attitue right now. Good timing.

Punk
how is walker the punk ? just becuse giddens might be ur boy doesnt mean that he isnt a punk he got kicked out of kansas he might be good but he has attitude problems plus wwalker is better
by PaulPierce33 on Jan 8, 2009 7:45 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
It’s not about Giddens being my “boy”, It’s about facts. Giddens hasn’t had any problems since Kansas. Walker has already started with 3 all-star players since entering the league (including his own team-mate Garnett). You think Walker is better is your own opinion.
Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...

It’ll be frustrating because Doc isnt likely to use them, and everyone including me will want him to..theres been rookies making positive impacts all across the league, theres no reason at all they shouldnt be able get burn especially with the way we struggle against young athletic teams, its the only way theyre ever going to get better, playing in front of a coupe hundred people in a high school gym against inferior competition isnt gonna help IMO

Sure, we’re now tanking the season for a draft pick anyhow — let’s play the kids.
You realize that there is a difference between, say, Derrick Rose and Walker and Giddens who are all rookies, right? (there’s also a difference between the goals of the Bulls and the Celtics, but that’s another story).
by kozlodoev on Jan 9, 2009 4:24 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Derrick rose is the only one making an impact?
Nah, and what we’re too good to give some minutes to a rookie? why’d we give consistent minutes to 2nd rounder glen davis all last year? I think Id agree if we still had Posey, but we can play one or the other to cut back on PP/Ray allens minutes if anything

Amen
i totally agree bro we need youth walker is good he was supposed to go high in the draft but the knee killed him truthfully it isnt going to hurt us to give him 10 mins

I'M getting nervous guys...we seemt o be grasping at straws.
Now two young NDBL players are gonna help us? What has happended to our team?
by sigmond floyd on Jan 8, 2009 8:44 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Thats not the point, I dont think anyone expects them to change anything dramatically.. but imo a little young blood isnt gonna hurt, but they probably wont see much playing time

Is the one exception to Docs rookie rule or rookie manging Big baby? this is a guy that got consitent minutes when a rookie and he did unexpectedly help us alot, most memorably that detroit game

Is this just a first taste?
Is this Bill’s and JR’s first taste as a Boston Celtics, and for one I am excited. I look forward to seeing what our next generation Celtic can bring to our current dilemma. Doc will play one of the two at a time after Friday, but we may see Bill Friday against the Cavs with TA out!

I dont think theyre even making the trip with the team to cleveland, there in boston for a few days off and then going to be re-evauluated at practice once the celtics are back

Walker
I’d really hoped Walker could help fill the void left by Posey (plus this whole “committee” group), and I REALLY hope time in the D-League has helped. But I wonder; isn’t the D-League for more of a long-term development?
I’d kill to see either have an impact.

The Celts are contenders
It seems too many still treat this team like the Delonte, Big Al, Gerald Green era. They have not gotten used to contender status. How many other top teams over the past years are working in late first round and second round picks? Yes, not winning as many games may not be the ultimate goal, yet, homecourt proved to be huge last year, so they are still going to try to win as many games as possible.
They simply cannot have a preconceived plan about how many minutes to “give” Pruitt, Walker, Giddens, etc., and then just ride it out, even if things aren’t working. Each game unfolds differently. Clearly the big 3 can’t go 40+ every night, but they haven’t been. Teams whose goal is to try and get the best record in the league, don’t work young ‘uns in just for the sake of developing them, disregarding the W’s and L’s. That is a mentality of teams who know being one of the top 3 teams in the league is not realistic.

Let's hope the injuries are not the reason for call up
I’ve seen all their games re NBDL Futurcast.
Both have shown to be IMPACT players. At times too aggressive with T.O. but their speed and athleticism are there.
Let’s hope the DA tells Doc to give their time on the court it. It can’t be any worse than Scalabrini, TA and Davis of late.

Shot in the arm
Maybe this is the shot in the arm we need. Before we give up on our bench, let us first exhaust all options we have there and that includes these two rookies. At this point of the season, I don’t think it would be a bad idea to give Pruitt and maybe one of Giddens or Walker some burn on the court. If they don’t pan out, there’s always the FA market which is rapidly growing by the day.

at JLAKER!!!
………………….Sasha is that you?
by EatSleepBreatheGreen on Jan 9, 2009 1:14 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I think that if we beat the Cavs tonight, the Lakers fans will be terrified again, not able to see anything green, right Sasha?
I believe in the C’s, this is just a slump. We will get over it (just a couple of new faces and the team will get back on track). By the way, those two new faces won’t be Walker’s and JR’s, though…

Giddens, Walker and Doc
At times we have really needed a long big and Doc hasn’t been willing to throw O’Bryant in there. Pruitt desrves some minutes if they are coming free from Tony Allen.
My guess is same as written above. They aren’t going to see any daylight.
