Update: Billy has successful surgery (rumor is out 6-8 weeks)
Updating the story from yesterday, the Celtics just put out the following press release:
BOSTON, MA - The Boston Celtics announced today that forward Bill Walker underwent successful right knee arthroscopic surgery today at the New England Baptist Hospital. Walker sustained a meniscus tear on the first day of training camp. Surgery was performed by Team Physician Dr. Brian McKeon and assisted by John Rand, PAC. No timetable has been set for his return.
Yesterday's story from the From the Globe
An MRI on Bill Walker's right knee revealed a torn meniscus and he will miss six to eight weeks, meaning the Celtics would have to carry an injured Walker on their roster into the regular season.
Walker left Wednesday's practice with a sore knee and returned to Boston for further examination.
Walker has had major surgery on both knees and has yet to reach his vast potential. He spent most of his rookie season in the NBDL. He played in 29 games last season.
As I said in the comments yesterday, I blame Cameron Diaz. I like that the Globe calls his potential vast though. This opens the door again for TA and for JR as well.

Come on Billy! Come on!
Reporter: About a year ago I asked about the Celtics-Lakers thing and you said you'd really only seen it on TV. Now you've been through it, can you talk about playing the Boston Celtics for the NBA championship?
Kobe: It Sucks.

better than the worst case, but not good at all

That's too bad.
shamsports.com lists Walker’s next two years as being non-guaranteed. If the Celtics feel that this could be a recurring thing, I wonder if there would be any chance of cutting him as they would only have to pay him the $800K or so they owe him for this year.

Could be worse...
That’s not that long and he is in good shape after working out all summer.

What a shame
This kid has been working hard all summer, not only on the court but off. This is a shame. Is this another Leon? I certainly hope not. Again, a likeable guy on the edge.
Here’s hoping that he recuperates fast and they keep him.

Could be worse is right.......
At lease it was a minor knee injury and not a severe one like a torn ACL .
Also since they are not performing surgery hopefully that means the tear is minor.
Lets keep in mind he is young and should heal within 6 weeks as predicted.
I hope this injury will not change Doc’s planned use of Walker.
Once healthy I hope he gives Walker some serious quality minutes so we can see what kind of stuff this kid really has.
I see alot of potential talent with Walker, if he can stay healthy and if he can get playing time.
Only time will tell though.

According to Doc's twitter
Walker will be having surgery within a week so it is probably more serious than what you are thinking.

nick: what is doc's twitter feed?
When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"

Just found out walker will have surgery..
and will now be out for 8 weeks according to a post off this website.
I guess the knee injury is more serious than I thought afterall.
Get well Walker and see you after Turkey day.

not seein' it
does he have a guaranteed contract? If not then time to say goodbye and move in another direction
by Red2 on Oct 1, 2009 3:29 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Just this year
the next two years are not guaranteed.

Not too bad
He only misses the first month of the season, a time when he wasn’t projected to be in the lineup anyway.
by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Oct 1, 2009 3:29 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but those are the two months when a lot of the plays should be becoming automatic to him.
It’s a shame that he’ll lose that experience at the start of the year.

surgery for a torn meniscus does not have to be overly serious
Arthroscopic procdure (CPT 29881) can be merely a snipping off of a small peice of meniscus. That is OK and the rehab time is relatively short. If it is more than simply snipping and some which internal stitching/repair is done then it will take longer to get back to exercising
Cameron Diaz taught me that…..among other things

ughhhh
that’s me reacting to TA seeing more minutes.

Gah!
That’s me reacting to Walker’s injury, TA minutes, the enigma of JR and the fact that the C’s haven’t found a reliable, athletic SF over 6’6" to defend & shoot 3’s off the bench. Where is our young James Posey replacement?

This is much better news than I expected,
so get better soon, Bill, as we could use your tenacity and skills.

no big deal...
Its a minor tear based off the timetable for recovery….it sux as a set back, but he’ll be ready for most of the season and will get his chance…
by BillfromBoston on Oct 1, 2009 7:55 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Nice comment and link BillfromBoston.
Lets hope Walkers surgery goes well, with no complications and he heals fast.
I am with you , though its a set back its not a big deal in the big picture of things if he can come back healthy in 8 weeks.
Its better the injury occurred now since that means he will only lose 1 month of season.

Get a vet!!
Besides the fact that this guy has gimpy knees, he hasn’t proven a single thing in the NBA!! He sucked in the summer league. Played like 5 minutes of garbage time last year. Not impressive at all. Why are we waiting for this guy again? Pull the trigger on Noc now..
by BWC on Oct 1, 2009 8:17 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
time to find a vet to play the SF...giddens and allen cannot
play there..i know about daniels but it sounds like he is more of a 1 and 2…

NOW THAT THE TICKETS ARE IN!!!!! GO CELTS!!!!

the bad news = it’s a knee and he already has had 2 knee ops. we also wince because of the memory of leon last year. the good news = it comes at the beginning of training camp and we have some healing time. and it’s the meniscus, not an acl.the kid has bad knee luck which is why we got him in the first place. i hope giddens is ready.

Hope its not the start of a trend in Celtics
Also hope this will be the only injury in Celtics this season.

Michael Sweetney,
Celts may have to make a decision between an injured Walker, and Sweetney. These gambles on guys with bad knees seems to consistently play out as a true gamble, that usually does not work. Ainge must be getting tired of the knee problems and may start reconsidering his decisions.
by Bozo on Oct 2, 2009 3:15 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
No
Sweetney is a just a warm body for scrimmage purposes. He has ZERO chance of making the squad, especially over Walker.

Does any Surgeon
ever publicly admit the surgery was unsuccessful?

Press Release
Or has any team ever issued a press release saying that the player underwent unsuccessful surgery…LOL, I was thinking the same thing.

Sure, if he wants to commit "career suicide"!
His malpractice insurance premiums are already astronomically high.
Upon admitting liability, and the resultant lawsuit, his career is over!

Agree with Brick and Large James
That’s a true laffer. I don’t any think any Dr has ever admitted that his surgery was not successfull. With our legal system, every lawyer wanting to drink a better grade of scotch would be all over the Doc. I even remember several cases of where the patient died but the Doc said ’the surgery was successful".
by Dipper on Oct 2, 2009 2:04 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Does it really matter?
Doc didn`t use Walker last year, and he had no real plans to use him this year either.
Still, why does this crap always happen to the Celtics?
When do we get to read about Kobe “resting comfortably” following his “successful knee surgery”?
Or, Gasol is “making progress while in rehab”.
