Do the Celtics have too many power forwards on the roster and not enough legit centers?

I for one think they do.

Lets look at the current power forwards and legit centers on the roster of the Celtics heading into the season. Please note: I  am counting Baby on the active roster, even though he is injured and a temporary player may take his place on the roster

CENTERS (Legit ) :

1. Perkins   2. Wallace

POWER FORWARDS :

1. Garnett    2. Davis        3. Williams    4. Scalabrine   (5. Wallace)

As you can see the number of power forwards on the roster out number the number of legit centers on the team 4-2 (The number is 5-2 if you count Rasheed as a power forward since he can play that position also).

I think we have way too much depth at the power forward position and not enough depth at the center position.

Take for example the current injury to Baby Davis, though he is injured, we still have 3-4 other power forwards on the roster to fill in for him.

But if either Perkins or Rasheed get hurt we would then only have 1 legit center left on the roster, no one else.

Please do not suggest Baby or Williams can be our back up centers because though they can perform back up spot duty at the position against smaller centers, they are "NOT LEGIT CENTERS" and do not have the height or length to play the position effectively , especially against the taller, longer true centers in the NBA.

I think the front line should have more balance between the Power forward and  Center positions and believe the Celtics should balance things out by trading one of our 4-5 abundant power forward players in exchange for a legit back up center.

That way we will have 3-4 legit power forwards on the roster but also 3 legit centers, giving us more balanced  depth at both positions.

Since Scal I believe is the most expendable of our 4-5  power forwards and has a appealing $3.5 million expiring contract, I think the Celtics should trade him for a back up 3rd string legit 7 foot center.

The Celtics do not have to go out and get a hall of fame back up center, just a affordable big center with size and length who can come in, rebound, block some shots and defend the low post against big centers like Shaq and Howard.

The C's should easily be able to find a low cost, talented back up center to trade for using Scals contract as bait.

Former C's back up centers PJ Brown and Scott Pollard were low cost players, but talented enough to get the job done as back up centers, so if the Celtics can find a backup center in the mold of those 2 players I think it would be a very wise move providing depth at the center position and vital insurance in case Perk or Rasheed get hurt.

Does anybody else agree with me that having 4-5 power forwards on the roster is overkill, that having only 2 legit centers on the roster leaves us thin at the center position ( especially in case a injury strikes) and the C's should remedy the matter by trading Scal for a back up center to balance the front court out and beef up our legit center position depth?

Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

Yessssssssssss

Fordescort me and you think so alike on this issue its scary.

I also do not see the sense of having 4 Power forwards on the team and only 2 pure centers.

I have also been begging all offseason for the C’s to trade Scal for a pure center.

I think it makes no sense to be 4 deep at the power forward position and only 2 deep at the center position.

I think its a no brainier that this frontcourt unbalance should be addressed and believe it will by the February deadline.

While I agree we need another center… it seems silly to trade Scal at this point.

Say we trade Scal, and BBD is out for half the season…. What happens if KG hurts his knee again? Then the only remaining PF is Williams??? I’d rather not see us in that position.

If KG hurt his knee, Scal was traded and Baby was out long term...

Willams and Rasheed (who is also a power forward due to his ability to spread the floor and shoot deep) would be thier to fill in for him.

We would still have depth at the power forward position also because our centers could always fill in effectively at the power forward position to add more depth at that position if needed, but our power forwards could not fill in effectively at the center position if more depth was needed at that position.

Also I respect your concern about what would happen to the power forward rotation if we lose KG and Baby to injuries because I worry about injuries also and is why I believe having balanced and equal balanced depth at both the center and power forward positions for insurance sake is vital.

But with all due respect, if as you say the C’s should keep Scal, I have to repeat my earlier point that we would then have 4 power forwards on the roster and 2 only centers, giving us too much depth at the power forward position at the expense of not having enough depth at the center position.

I also repeat again if Rasheed or Perk gets hurt we would have then only have 1 legit center on the bench, which would be devastating since we will be facing Shaq and Howard etc in the playoffs.
I would not like to see the C’s in that position.

I guess what I am trying to say is, since their is a 15 man roster for NBA clubs, it would be wiser for the C’s and all clubs to be 3 deep in each of the 5 on court positions.

Keep in mind the professionals do not always make the right calls....

for example Doc and Danny though players like, Tony Allen, Patrick Obryant, Mikki Moore were smart signings and could help the club, but how did they turn out?

Yes they are the pros and know more about basketball then us fans, but they do not always make the right decisions and we have fans have the right to give our opinions, after all that’s what makes sports and blogs like this so fun.
