2 first comments in one day? i’m on a roll!
this is weird, why would they do this?

Because the deadline falls on a weekend...

I guess they’re allowing the deadline to be on a business day this year; normally, I’m pretty sure they enforce deadlines no matter what day of the week.

yeah, if they wanted it on a business day you figure someone might’ve noticed a little earlier.

Deadline extension or no, I’d bet the rent money no deal will get done. Rondo would have to climb over his agent’s dead body to sign such a deal. It’s not going to happen.

I wanna see Danny get er done. Rondo’s prime for 10-11m is very reasonable.

Let's wait, and then match any offer after #18.

If Rondo plays with the pressure of free agency (and shooting for the biggest contract possible), the Cs will be unstoppable this season.

amen!

I don’t get all the rambling about the need to sign him up now or lose him later doom predictions, after all he is a RESTRICTED free agent next season, I don’t know if doomsayers understand the meaning of the word. If he wants top money then let this season prove that he is worth the huge payoff, I’m sure that the Celtics front office will be more than happy to even give him max contract if indeed he is deserving of that contract (CP3 level of play day in and day out in a consistent manner) if so then he will be the face of the franchise and besides the Celtics will let the market determine his value that’s called good business sense, you pay for current value not potential value.

Because if the Celts have to match a contract

There are issues. First of all, it could be for a few million a year more than the Celts want to pay. That doubles with the luxury tax. Everyone seems to think Wyc/Danny don’t care whether they pay Rondo $9M or $13M. I disagree. Also, another team would write the contract we’d be matching and we’d have to agree to their terms. They could do a contract we don’t like, such as frontloading it, or do what Charlotte did for Varajao did, where he got bigger bucks for 2 years and then went unrestricted.

valid points but

personally i say if rondo plays like a man possessed this season (contract year, more motivation), we get banner 18 thru his efforts, (hopefully beating the lakers in a finals rematch) Bean town goes mad with celebration! then let the market decide his worth next year even then danny can still match the offer and do a sign and trade (work his magic) either way we are no GM hehe but honestly though if this season Rondo would be as good or even better than CP3 the celtics front office would be willing to give him a max contract, besides ray’s contract is coming off the books next year .

Two things

One, if a team with cap space goes after Rondo then there’s probably no sign and trade, we just lose him for nothing. Secondly, while they might give him a max contract nextr year if he’s great it’s ridiculous to think they would prefer that to paying him millions less a season.

I wouldn’t assume that our point guard is going to play better with a chip on his shoulder about his first big contract.

Our collective ubuntu is hurt if we put Rondo in the position of feeling under paid/appreciated in a locker room full of max-deal guys, especially considering his improvement.

Give the pg his due and just let him focus on the teams game and not his agenda.

It's quite possible a few teams might overvalue his worth.

There aren’t a lot of great point guards for the taking out there and there is arguably nobody in the unique class of PG that Rondo occupies. If a team that’s setting aside cash for Lebron, Bosh, etc., doesn’t get one of their top choices, I fully expect they might overspend for Rondo regardless of his level of play this year, requiring the Celtics to match if they wish to retain his services.

This game took a number of days off my life, but I didn't have anything scheduled.
