Yet Another Celtics Preview: Ball Don't Lie
It's that time again. Ball Don't Lie, the best general NBA blog out there (and a fine friend of SBNation) has come out with a shiny spiffy super spectacular preview of our beloved Boston "Basketball" Celtics. Some excerpts and thoughts below.
The meat of the preview as always comes from the man with the adamantium fingers, Kelly Dwyer. Basically he uses 800 words to tell us what we already know; that is our season rides on a certain six foot twelve inch power forward with possible office stationary in his knees. However, in proper BDL form he brings the in depth insight.
For one, his injury isn't a typical basketball-styled malady. There's nothing to fall back on, no "oh, I remember Boozer having that a few years back, he wasn't right until January, but he was fine eventually." Apparently his tendons had to be stapled back onto his right knee. Apparently he was limping around in practice last week. Apparently things are going to be fine by the end of October. Apparently, C's fans haven't had fingernails to chew since last February.
Additionally, because Garnett is such a unique player, there's no real telling from game to game just what his teammates need to do in his absence, should there be an absence to make up for. Because he does so much defensively to disrupt a game, alongside the usual all-world stat lines, it's not as simple as looking to run more for Paul Pierce or letting Rajon Rondo dominate the ball a bit more.
The second paragraph especially speaks to what is at the heart of the problem we faced last year. Even with a dramatically improved Glen Davis, and somehow better (for one out of two playoff series) Rajon Rondo, we still weren't THE Boston Celtics from 2008-2009. It wasn't like we were the same but worse...we were a completely different team. Different identity, different style. That's what Garnett brings beyond stat lines and cool commercials.
However, Dwyer isn't all doom and gloom. I don't know if you heard, but we added some decent players this offseason.
On Rasheed Wallace:
Rasheed can't replace what Garnett brings at all angles if KG were to step aside, but he's just about the closest thing there is to that.
On Daniels:
Marquis Daniels can really play. I have misgivings about his ability as a reserve point man, but he can help this team if the motivation is there.
Beyond that, it's mostly rosy with a touch of possible not that terrible gloom. Basically Dwyer's take is that we're going to be as good as Garnett is healthy, but after that we have all the tools.
On Rondo:
Rondo has a great chance to become the fifth All-Star on Boston's roster. That's up to him, and on a team with this much peer pressure, I don't expect Rondo to fall backward like he did for some stretches in 2008-09.
On Perkins:
Kendrick Perkins, assuming he continues to stay in shape, will continue to improve. He's not even 25 yet, and if Kendrick Perkins is the weak link in you're starting lineup, than you're doing pretty well.
And possibly the brightest spot of the article, Dwyer gives major props to the Captain (which shouldn't be that big a surprise considering this).
The rock here is Paul Pierce. He put the Celtics on his back to lead them into the playoffs with Garnett on the pine last year, he carried the team for years with no help, and though he might level off a bit in his 12th season, he should be there again in 2009-10. No matter what's falling or rising around him. Points, points in the fourth quarter, helping the team toward the win.
All in all, Dwyer expects good, but not nessecarily great things.
The team will win. As high as the low 60s, if KG is around and playing as well as can be reasonably expected. Possibly the high 40s or low 50s, if KG struggles. I hope this doesn't come off as flip, but the team is just going to have to try and make it to the playoffs with tendons intact. This group is made for the postseason, and the trick is going to be getting there with everyone on board this time around. You already knew that. Let's see what happens.
The rest of the article is worth checking out, there is this awesome picture:
via a323.yahoofs.com
There's still other stuff worth seeing, so I recommend you check it out in its entirety.
Do I like that I don't even see the words "Unquestioned 2009-2010 NBA Champions"? No. I don't. Do I like that the phrase "Best team ever assembled within the realm of understood written history" does not appear even ONCE in the article? No sir. However that aside, great work.
Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

Props to IP!!
and the pictures were excellent (GINGER ANLKLE SNAPZ – classic)
In watching the traing camp session on NBA tv I noticed the following things
Too much talking by the announcers (Cornbread and the other dude) – shut up already and let us watch…..geesh that was frustrating
KG did not appear to limp at all from what I saw and had a great pass to Rondo under the basket.
Rasheed looks out of shape more than the rest. His age of 35 appears to be showing – he walked up the court every time
Perk looked very quick and quite ready for Perk
Rondo was hardly breathing hard
PP looked relaxed and not overweight. Captain my captain
Sweet Jesus Shuttlesworth looked in shape and ready as usual….he truly is smooth like Clyde Walt Frazier
Scal might have found the weight room I detected almost a small cut of muscle definition on the arm (could have been the lighting on his skin but he looked a bit more in shape).
Queasy Marquisy looked quick and did not look lost.
I wish I could see the first preseason game……. curse the cable company!!!!!
Is it Soup Yet?

Yes, Sheed stood out to me as 'conserving his energy' as well.
The returning vets look to be in better shape than in recent years—including PP, KP, BBD, and BS.
And Doc looked to be invested in investing in Scal’s coverage of PP as the ‘opposing 3’.

Scal is a three.
I think that’s where Scal has played most of his career. He’s a little slow footed to guard most three’s but his effort is always there and he’s a good team defender. He also seems to get under the skins of opponents. D. Howard Gets really mad when Scal or Baby is guarding him.

You mean D Howard gets mad when Perk is guarding him.
Reporter: About a year ago I asked about the Celtics-Lakers thing and you said you'd really only seen it on TV. Now you've been through it, can you talk about playing the Boston Celtics for the NBA championship?

I think Scal is mostly a 4...
I believe he’s got the majority of his minutes there, and his best defense in recent memory has come on Big Al, KG, and Amare’.

Yes, that's why it stuck out so much when Doc said that with BW out Scal could be put on more 3's
—and even switch with Daniels at the 2 if a particular 3 was too tough for him.

Any talk in camp re young guys?
Was there any discussion of how Giddens or Hudson looked?

Not in this preview, but this is just a basketball blog. you can probably find stuff over at the herald.

one source says...
Giddens and Hudson are ‘end of the bench-ers’ (if Hudson makes final cut).

High 40s without KG? Don't think so Kelly
Celtics were 18-7 without KG which projects to 59 wins over 82 games and then they added Wallace and Daniels. Now PP played his heart and legs out (partially due to Doc forgetting to sub for him), but this team is much too good to be in the 40’s without a lot of things going wrong, not just KG.
by colincb on Oct 5, 2009 3:35 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed…this isnt a 40 win team without KG…sorry but they added a guy in rasheed who could start for most teams, and has a similar skillset to KG…and they’ve proved to be a team to contend with without KG, in the regular season, and even playoffs taking the eventual EC champs to 7, not only without KG, but Powe, and obviously we didnt have daniels and sheed….

Tendons Stapled to the Bone
Does everyone assume that Bill Simmons was correct when he stated that KG’s tendons had to be reattached to the bone with staples? Dwyer apparently does.
Is there an orthopedist in the house who can comment on this procedure and when it is used?
by Brickowski on Oct 5, 2009 3:41 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Simmons actually said the tendon was stapled to the knee cap...
… which makes absolutely zero sense from an anatomical perspective.

Video of KG Last Thurs
Was he just sore? Have you guys heard anything? I hope its not serious. I have always liked KG and hope him the best. Plus, I would love to play you guys at full strength come June. No excuses, just basketball. Good luck this year.

Yeah...
We’ve all seen it. There’s been many other reports that are saying he’s fine. It’s gonna be a ‘thing’ until he looks the part in the regular season.

KG will be fine he just has to play himself through the injury. For all the people that truly do not understand what skill set Rasheed brings to the table. Learn the game of basketball. Rasheed has been the best player on any team he has played on. Who do you think was the man in Detroit. None other than Rasheed. Good forbid any thing happens to KG but if it does we will still win 60-70 games Rasheed’s interior defense is just as good as KG’s. Why do you think the Owner I said the Owner the General Manager and the big three all went to Rasheed’s home and in Doc’s words beg Rasheed to come play in Boston. The man is a mirror of KG. There will be no drop off if KG if not quite right. Although I do beleive KG will be fine in about 45 days.
Our team defense will the best it has been around here in about 20yrs. Our perimeter defense will be on par with when Posey was here. Add to that our interior defense (which will be the best in the league) a lot of teams will only score 70-80 pts.

Do you honestly think that without KG you can win 60-70 games? Its hard enough to win 60 in nba with a healthy team. In my opinion, the dropoff between a healthy KG and Wallace is greater than you think. But again, thats just my opinion.
I may be a die hard laker fan, but I am also a fan of good basketball, so I hope that this is a moot subject come playoff time. I hope that all of the contenders (Magic, Celts, Cavs, Spurs, and the Lake Show) are healthy. It just makes watching the games that much more enjoyable.
Good Luck this season.

70 is crazy talk with or without KG imo
With healthy KG, 62+ wins
Without healthy KG, 50-55 wins

Really? Rasheed was the man in Detroit?
I believe it was their finals MVP, Chauncey Billups, who was their man. He took an 8th seeded western conference team to the WCC. yea, he was the man.

56
wins is too low, this is a much better team, just be honest in the predictions people 64-68 wins that is what is going to happen, this 56 wins stuff is silly.

The focus is in the wrong place
KG will struggle for at least the 1st 1/3 of the season, but he should be at full strength by the all-star break. Only natural for a guy who’s never had a major injury in his career to take some time to adjust to TRUSTING his knee again.
For me the fate of BOS lies within and the new cast members ability to pick up the defensive schemes early in the season. I think the off season moves are more than enough to compensate for a potentially rusty KG. KG’s presence will be felt more in the playoffs vs. ORL, CLE, LAL.
Rondo has won me over as an elite PG for the C’s. If he can continue the tear he was on in the playoffs last yr, and average 15, 8, & 8 or better, no one will stop the C’s in the east. Also if Ray doesn’t go into a slump like the past 2 season, then you guys will be in great shape.
I watched the training camp preview on NBA TV also and I agree that Wallace does look sloppy and out of shape, but hey what do you know, it’s the training camp and the preseason games haven’t even started, he has plenty of time to get in game shape.
BOS & CLE are clearly the class of the east. Barring any catastrophic injuries they should both finish with 62+ wins. I can’t wait to see the ECF between BOS & CLE, it’s going to be an all out war. I’d call off work to see that series!
I love these BOS blogs, you guys are so passionate for the C’s hopefully BOS can come through this yr to create an absolutely epic 2010 NBA Finals Rematch of LAL/BOS, only hopefully this time it’ll have a hollywood ending, although it would be a tall task beating this C’s squad in a 7 gamer. ;-)
Long leave the rivally!!!
