Apparently Lebron James Thinks Basketball Started in 1984
(hat tip BDL)
Out of respect to Michael Jordan, who sat courtside and watched James score 34 points, James said he is planning on switching his number after this season from No. 23 to No. 6. It just sort of came out, but it was obvious he's been thinking about it for a while.-via Cleveland.com
Um ex-squeeze me? Baking powder? Lebron James says Micheal Jordan's number is just so precious, but he wants to switch to NUMBER 6? Ever heard of this guy?
"I just think what Michael Jordan has done for the game has to be recognized some way soon," James said. "There would be no LeBron James, no Kobe Bryant, no Dwyane Wade if there wasn't Michael Jordan first.
"He can't get the logo, and if he can't, something has to be done. I feel like no NBA player should wear 23. I'm starting a petition, and I've got to get everyone in the NBA to sign it. Now, if I'm not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it."
How does this even make sense? Without Bill Russell would there have been Micheal Jordan? Without Wilt Chamberlain would there have been Shaq?
Bill Russell won 11 rings. He needs to grow another finger just to wear them all at once. He was the first African-American basketball superstar, and he was the first African-American to coach in any major American professional sports league.
But no, Micheal Jordan deserves the logo. Spot on, Lebron.
I don't have a problem with honoring Micheal Jordan's accomplishments, but if we want to start retiring numbers league-wide, it ought to start with number 6.
Is it not better to honor players that inspire you by wearing their number? Teams should retire numbers, leagues should not, except in truly revolutionary cases. Jackie Robinson was a revolution. The foul line dunk and the Jordan Brand sneaker were not on that level.
EDIT: Jason Richardson has already also jumped on the bandwagon
Getting lots of tweets about changing my number 4 MJ. Im all 4 it he's the greatest player to ever play. NBA should of retired 23 yrs ago.
Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

Bron didn’t mean it as disrespect towards Russell and frankly I don’t really buy the reason why he wants to switch the #. He has had it for 6 seasons now what he said last night applied a year ago, 2 years ago and 6 years ago.

This can't be an accident
Of all of the numbers to pick to switch to. Does he really not know? Guess he isn’t planning on going to the Celtics.

Just my Opinion
I think LBJ was insulted, peeved maybe a little jealousy or how ever else you want to call it…because MJ brought D.Wade into his shoe conntracts…its a spoil child reflex reaction on Lebron’s end.

That’s it! lj is jealous of dw because mj chose an nba champion over him! i would too. dw is a quiet champion. lj has more to prove. he doesn’t know how to make his teammates better yet.

I don't see how Russell Tops Jordan
I mean, Talent wise, yes Jordan was a lot more dominant, athletic, etc…I’m not even gonna bring up winning since non-Celtics fans seem to think it is a cop-out for us to go there. But Russell’s contribution to the game itself, outside the court. The guy was a major cog in BUILDING the NBA. As great as Jordan was…He rode the waves that started with Dr. J and elevated by Magic and Bird. Jordan could not have done anything without them, simply because there would be no stage for him to perform. This generation of stars idolized Jordan as a basketball player. Probably the greatest basketball player ever. But the NBA could have existed without him.

Bring Russell stuff when Cleveland Visits
Guys let’s remind him who Bill Russell is. Bring Russell stuff when Cleveland Visits. Make enough noise so the media will ask him flat out why Russell is less significant than Jordan. That’s a lose-lose question that I’d love to see him answer. And he thought Free Agency questions are hard.?

Two things
One, I’d say that if any number should be retired throughout the entire NBA, it’s Russell. I’m a die hard Laker fan, so it’s hard to admit. It is nice having Jerry West as the logo to brag about, so I can only imagine what this would do to the arrogant Celtics fan.
Two, I think maybe Bron is paving the way to go to another team, just in case. New team? Why not a new number? He already paid tribute to the Yankees on his shoes, sporting the number 27 on his right shoe.
Just my take on it.
Well let me welcome everybody to the wild wild west. A state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness.

If Russell’s, jersey was indeed retired throughout NBA, I would say that Wilt’s wouldn’t be far behind.
I did not see any of Wilt’s and Russell’s battles from back in the day of course, but from what I heard and read they were legendary.

I just can't believe this sentance...
“Now, if I’m not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it.”
Maybe you should win something before you anoint yourself league spokesman

Hmmmmm should we be looking at retired numbers to see what teams have 23 retired and not 6? After all it’s all about where LeBron is going to be next season. Maybe he is switching because his new team doesn’t have 23 available and so he came up with that story…. Makes as much sense as switching to 6 because 23 should be retired leaguewide.

2. he is arrogant & very selfish

he is not bigger than the game.

Queen
win something Queen James…then get back to us…and to the poster that said Jordon was more dominant…please!! Count the number of rings Russell has…and he won them at a time when the league wasn’t watered down…
by Fastbreak1 on Nov 13, 2009 2:07 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Well...
Maybe he intends on becoming a Shot-Blocking, Rebounding, Defensive Stalwart that makes his teammates better.
Maybe he intends on winning 11 Rings, as well.
Whether or not Lebron meant it as disrespect…who knows? He still has his whole career in front of him to determine what effect he will have on his teammates, and thus far I would say the jury is still out.
He has yet to elevate his teammates to Championship Land. Maybe he will, maybe he won’t.

breakfast cereal
I just heard a new Lebron story. He wants every cereal changed to Mr. T/LeBron cereal. You know the ones with the little Mr. T corn pop heads, and the little baby LeBron marshmellow heads. Plus there is a new 2010 free agent edition coming out to. It has LeBron in different color headbands, you know black and red for the Trailblazers, orange for the Suns, blue & red for the Pistons, cause you never know what team he will end up on.
Also, out of respect for Lucky Charms, Capt Crunch, Pac Man Cereal, and Fruity Marshmellow Krispies, all of those cereals will be retired so you can’t eat them anymore.
You can only eat Mr. T/LeBron cereal now.
Enjoy your breakfast everyone!!!

that was hilarious.
Reporter: About a year ago I asked about the Celtics-Lakers thing and you said you'd really only seen it on TV. Now you've been through it, can you talk about playing the Boston Celtics for the NBA championship?

LeBron
Does he want to wear 6 because MJ has six titles? Who said Russel was the size of A.C. Green as if that is a cut down? Come one! It’s funny, MJ came 20 years before Lebron and Russ came 20 or 25 years before MJ but for some reason people always seem to discount someone;s athletic ability who played very long ago. It reminds me of the article Bob Ryan had shortly after the Bulls won their last title. He said, " You hear the word athleticisim so much today that you would think the players of the past couldnt run or jump. Now hear this, and hear it well, Bill Russel would come out of nowhere to block a MIchael Jordan shot just as easily and just as often as he did greats from the past such as Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, …" . I probably messed up a little of that but you get the idea.

Might I suggest Lebron switch to this little "number" - something he wears at home

Noting to do with Russell....
Lebron wants #6 to honor Dr. J
by Title 18 on Nov 13, 2009 3:52 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Exactly.
That’s part of the reason why its a big deal. He changed from number 23 to number 6. Thus, he’s saying number 23 is better than number 6, because it is too good even for him to wear.

Would LBJ have the same complaints?
by Title 18 on Nov 13, 2009 6:29 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
LeBron's a d ick and self grandizing egomaniac trying to of the put more spotlight on himself.
Jordan’s number shouldn’t be retired because he didn’t do anything significant to the game besides play it well. Many players did that.
Changing it to #6 makes even less sense because of Russell’s accomplishments on and off the court. Michael will never be the voice for African Americans, nor any group, that Russell was. This is just a nice ploy by Nike, and a chance for LBJ to get the #1 spot in jersey sales. It’s killing him that Kobe has all of the glory right now.
by wondahbap on Nov 13, 2009 6:49 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
As media savvy as LBJ usually is, someone should have told him
that his arguments for #23 should apply to #6, no matter what player he “thought” he was honoring.
by wondahbap on Nov 13, 2009 6:52 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
One thing is for sure...
LeBron better win a championship at some point in his career. He has spent so much time building himself up (and the media has too) before he has won anything. The fallout will be incredible if he does not win one.

Queen James and the LeBrons
I try not to show just how much I can’t stand LeBron. I guess I do a bad job of it though…
This guy loves attention more then any player I have ever witnessed.
First— he wears Yankees gear all over the country and yet denies his interest in playing for the Knicks.
Second— He won’t say he is leaving Cleveland next year and he won’t say he is either. He flirts with the topic in the media at every chance he gets… and now— he declares he will NO LONGER DISCUSS FREE AGENCY W THE MEDIA… What?
Third— now, last night we have the Queen King declaring that he believes the entire league should retire MJ’s number 23.
So now… we can all listen to the debate on what jersey LeBron will wear next year and what number will be on the front… totally dumb. This guy is totally addicted to the attention. Some times I think after games he is trying to sound so intellegent and well spoken to the side line reporter that he spews out words that are just plain stupid.
Honestly, I respect LeBron’s talent. He is a freak of nature for sure. I just wish he would shut the hell up.

LeBron is a moron.
he’s sucking up to MJ for some reason.
what that is .. it’s between them.
no other reason for this UNMANLY statement by him.
things like this will diminish his popularity with other players.
geez, the 3pt wasn’t even part of the game until the 70s, so just throw a lot of stats out the window.
Wilt was the best in my opinion.
LeBron is getting lame.

they're idiots
it’s not like we’re asking them to know the history of the world; no, we’re merely asking them to know the history of the NBA- you know the place where they make their living. to say that you’re switching to No 6 and not even understand the slight to Bill Russell or the history of the nba— well, that’s just mind boggling. mj was a great player but he couldn’t and shouldn’t hold bill russell’s jock.
