Allen Iverson Waived
Allen Iverson, Memphis Grizzlies agree to terminate contract - ESPN
The Grizzlies announced Monday in a statement that the team has ended its one-year contract with the 10-time All-Star and former league MVP in what it called a mutual agreement. Iverson was not placed on waivers by the 6 p.m. ET deadline on Monday so is expected to be waived on Tuesday, a league source told ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan. Under the agreement, Iverson will receive only a fraction of the $3 million he was scheduled to earn. If he clears waivers, he will become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday night.
No. That is all.

I really hope that doesn't start a rash of....
we need Allen Iverson threads in the forums and post in this area. I think Iverson has finally worn out his NBA welcome and is about to pull a Marbury. That entails sitting out of basketball for all of this year and most of next eating humble pie before finally convincing some contender that you will behave and help them to a championship only to find that after a year and a half of not playing ball, that he no longer has the ability to play NBA ball any longer.
Whether he then goes on to possible marijuana induced live simulcasts will be completely up to AI.

Absolutely not.
No Iverson. No way. No how.
Not a team guy, won’t play a secondary role.

Iverson is the anti-title.
That is all.

I've never like the guy
… but if he’d come on board for the vet minimum and a chance to win a ring, I’d probably try it. If he then doesn’t behave, just cut him.
There is the possibility that he’d accept a role with a championship contender and multiple future hall of famers that he just never would with the woeful Griz.
Even then it’s iffy, but I’d give it a try at vet minimum only.

LOL, so it seems
I’ve always despised the little critter. The truth is, I was dead set against trying to cash in Al, et al for him, but for the vet min, I’d actually consider it, just on the hope that a chance for a ring will make him drive straight for once, and buy into ubuntu, and simply cut him if he acts up.
I think I must be having a moron moment, but I would consider it.

"There is the possibility that he’d accept a role with a championship contender and multiple future hall of famers"
Two Words: Detroit Pistons
granted, whether or not Sheed and Hamilton will be HOFers is way up for debate but AI couldn’t come off the bench behind Hamilton even when it was winning them games… no, he quit on his team.

To be fair
Curry’s management of that situation was awful, and his smallball attempts (Hamilton guarding threes? He has enough trouble guarding twos) and refusal to speed up the extreme slow-down Detroit offense for one of the best uptempo players in the history of the game was pretty glaring also.
Naturally, that doesn’t excuse Iverson for basically quitting on the team, but a fair chunk of the situation was less his fault than has been portrayed.

Blaming Curry is patently absurd.
Why can’t a 6-7 Hamilton, a pretty good defender, guard threes?? Blaming Detroit’s failure last season on Curry is absurd. Dumars clearly wanted to save some money while keeping people in the seats. By bringing a coach and team wrecker on board, Dumars was clearly mailing in the season last season.
Detroit’s failure and Curry’s demise was as predictable as a snowstorm in New England after the trade.
by Finkelskyhook on Nov 17, 2009 11:36 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Uhm, no
Hamilton didn’t guard twos for practically his entire time in Detroit. He switched assignments with Billups because Billups had the size to guard two guards and Hamilton had the speed to guard ones. He has a similar arrangement with Stuckey now. Asking him to guard threes wasn’t going to be good in any fashion whatsoever. Saying Curry couldn’t have dealt with this better is painfully wrong. Were they going to be a top team in the East last year? No, but they certainly could have put up a better effort than the malaise that gripped them last year.

Do you think..
The Cavs come calling? Does Iverson have ability to put his tail between his legs and play with Lebron?
I hope not. Be yourself AI, be yourself.

Sign him now Danny !
If the C’s can sign him to a minimum contract they should go for it.
He would be perfect coming off our bench, giving us ball handling skills and scoring.
The big 4 and Doc will make sure he does not misbehave as they did last year with Marbury when we feared he may be a problem if signed (which he was not).
If it still acts up or does not work out we can always release him.
He wants a title and being on the Celtics will get him as close as he has ever been to one, which may motivate him like crazy to behave and produce on the court.
I say lets give him a shot , its a low risk, but possible very high gain move helping us attain title #18.

He would be perfect coming off our bench
Look this is exactly what he refused to do in his last two teams. He won’t do it for us either.
I think this is the end of AI’s NBA carrier. Almost no NBA team wanted him before he signed in Memphis, so who wants him now?
by dexter11 on Nov 17, 2009 5:12 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If he refuses to come off the bench...
I do not want him on this team either.
But what if he says ok Doc, big 3 I want to win a title.
I will do what ever you want.
I will come off the bench and behave.
He may be so motivated to show the NBA and the world he is not a cancer or washed up like many think he is that he becomes a very potent bench player for the C’s this year helping them win title #18.
Is that scenario to hard to believe that it can not come true.
I do not think so and therefore say Danny roll the dice and sign AI now.
Again if signed to a minimum contract and we are able to cut AI if he acts up, I think its a no brainer you sign him since you have nothing to lose and possibly very much to gain.
by fordescort on Nov 17, 2009 11:22 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Why would we want AI?! Seriously?
Y’all are nuts that say sign him. AI is not Marbury. Marbury was at least willing to give the bench a try, especially since he hadn’t played in year. AI will only play if he starts. Have you guys not learned this yet? And who are you going to bench in his place? Rondo or Ray? You seriously want to break up the best starting five in basketball to get a me-first player, who hogs the ball, is too short to play defense, and has been a cancer on every team he’s been on? seriously?!
by KY Celts fan on Nov 16, 2009 9:44 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Of course we do not sign AI ...
if he wants to start.
I say sign him only if understands he will come off the bench and agrees to behave or gets cut.
Again their is not much to lose if AI can be signed to a minimum contract and can be cut if he behaves.
But we alot to possibly gain if it works out.
Just because AI was a cancer on past teams does not mean he will be one on this great team, with the strong players like Garnett, Allen, Pierce, Rasheed and Doc keeping a eye on him.

And then there’s that completely irrational side of me that screams, “We would shock the world!” Sorry, but that could be as fun as it could be disastrous. I can’t shake the thought! LOL.

He destroyed the Pistons last year. Everyone blames Coach M. Curry, but I watched it unfold daily… Even with the Pistons winning he still refused to be a ‘support’ player. Soon after he became ‘injured’ and although the Pistons MD’s cleared him to play, he wouldn’t. Soon after the rest of the starters gave up.
I was suprised anyone would sign him after that, but Memphis did…

OK, I'll be against the idea on one condition:
If you were to get the Big 3.5 — Pierce, KG, Allen and Rasheed — drunk and they’d STILL swear they wouldn’t want AI on the team. But what if they know him, love him, “understand” him? I dunno. We all hated Sheed … OK, bad analogy. All I’m saying is, if the vets wouldn’t want him, then I wouldn’t. But what if they were dying to have him join up?
Final question: Who would want to land him, could land him, besides us who could HURT us with the pick-up?
Just curious.
by Big_Easy on Nov 16, 2009 11:16 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Let's Face It, Iverson doesn't know anything about "Team Ball"
When he was in Philly, the offense they ran was basically “let AI dribble and drive while four guys stand around the court and watch”. He’s never learned the concept of team ball and he keeps putting himself before the team at every turn.
I don’t see why its still unclear to some that his stats are more important to him than a ring.
I’m convinced AI is gonna be a liability anywhere he goes, so let Cleveland pick him up. You think they’re having chemistry issues now? We haven’t seen anything yet.
Again, I invite AI to prove me and all the naysayers wrong. But its really hard to see that happening at this point.
Don't Trade Rondo or Perk!

AI seemed pretty peeved at coming off the bench
and i’m not sure playing with 3 HOFers would change that, cuz he wouldn’t start here, or get anywhere near 30 mpg, unless somebody got hurt. though, who knows…seemed like him and pierce did want to play together when there was all that speculation that he was boston-bound a few years ago.
by guy incognito on Nov 17, 2009 12:09 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
good call. i remember pierce told globe or others that he would with both hands welcome A.I. at that time
i was having a feeling that our captain was a bit desperate then
by friedgreentomatoes on Nov 17, 2009 12:15 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah, that was pre-big 3
though i’m sure our guys would try to make it work…hell, they made marbury feel welcome. but AI would have to make major sacrifices, like coming off the bench and play 20-25 mpg, tops. i’m not sure he’s ready to do that yet.

Iverson waived
Iverson can help the Celtics in the point wherein the team is weakest….Rondo could not be counted upon in situation in which the Celtics needs to score in tight games and when situation warrants to make a play and score and create scoring situation when other teammates are fully defended and covered…there are a lot of times even in their Championship run that makes Rondo ineffective in crucial situations…and even this young season Rondo is a liability when games in on the line to help the Celtics score needed points on last seconds and game winning situation..Iverson can be of great help for the Celtics and sure he will be towing the line what KG and the other stars hope him to be….a team man …sacrifice individualism for the sake of the team….the big 3 have done it…why Iverson will not is not a remote possibility…..

by braz on Nov 17, 2009 4:32 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Why not `?
.. asking you that, because of his perfect tripling-abilities & his abilities to score in many different ways and now it comes: Now, without any pressure!! He doesn’t have to be the leader of the team and still can be a big part, like Sheldon Williams becomes in the last games.. Sure Eddie has the better 3 Pointer, but as you see in the last games: we need them to win and AI can score in more ways and has a better tripling and earns more respect by your opponents than House does. AI gives Daniels more room and still has enough speed in his legs – why not giving him the last chance of his career for a title, he earned so much after his great career? I wouldn’t trade House at all, there are other guys, that can go…
I asked god and he said: L.A. will lose again next year!! ^_°

First we need to figure out why virtually no other team wanted to sign him in the off season, Then we need to figure out why things didn’t work out in the lowly Gizzles. If Danny can make sure those things won’t happen again in Boston and he can convince AI to come off the bench or persuade Rondo, Doc and the fans to let AI start with the Big 3, then I say why not give it a shot. He can’t be worse than Marbury, right?
by getthat18now on Nov 17, 2009 5:31 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
understand that in Memphis....
… because I can’t believe that this going well, playing for such a worse team without getting a leadership-role, what he deserves even that he is a selfish player. The Celts have a bunch of veterans, that AI knows well for a long time – he definitely have to accept coming from the bench like Sheed accepted that too. It must be clear for him, that he will not be a leader on our team – he will accept that if he wants a ring – that definitely is his last chance, if the Celts want him ;-)
I asked god and he said: L.A. will lose again next year!! ^_°

'Toine over AI
I’d much rather have ‘Toine, at Vet’s minimum, over Iverson. AI will never pass the ball. He’ll instead make the C’s bench, a one man show.
’Toine, off the bench, will in fact make passes and jack 3s. And with fellows like House, Daniels, and Sheed around, any pass from ’Toine will make the bench work out.

A.I. to NY, because they need him.
Donnie Walsh is a smart man. He should pick Iverson up, just to buy time for 2010. If the team keeps losing they can blame Iverson. D’antoni and Walsh will be off the hook. All the media attention will be on The Answer.
If the team starts winning, Iverson will get redemption. It’ll be good for the fans, and a one year deal is a small gamble for ownership. The team sucks now, just hide it for a bit longer.
Both ways the Knicks win, even if they lose.
