Flat Celts Get By

The Celtics were flat tonight.   How flat were they?  In case you missed it, Tommy Heinsohn, Mr. Celtic, the homer announcer that every non-Celtics fan absolutely loathes on league pass called the Celtics elderly.   Elderly.  He said this in the context of the second night of the road back-to-back.    Hopefully, Tommy is wrong and the Celtics are still working on their legs, but clearly  they lacked a bounce in their step tonight - for example, Eddie badly air-balled a rhythm three at the start of the fourth and Paul's turn-around with 20 seconds to go to ice it was woefully short, barely scraping the front rim.

Not to take anyting away from the Timberwolves.   They came out with energy and basically had an answer for every Celtics run.  It's a pleasure to watch Al Jefferson.   Jonny Flynn seems very much legit (I still don't get the Rubio pick).   Ryan Gomes is just a solid NBA player - except for that ill-advised three with 50 seconds left.   Oleksiy Pecherov has some interesting hair, and a better jumper.   Wolves fans might be upset with the tie up call with six seconds to go, but honestly, what is career 38% shooter Corey Brewer doing with the ball there?

The Wolves really controlled the game, up until the middle of the 3rd quarter when they decided to stop guarding Rajon Rondo.   Rajon found a few creases down low, made the bunnies and carried that energy into his defense with a few steals.   He sparked the team tonight.   With an "elderly" core (in basketball sense) the Celtics are really going to need to lean on the young legs of Rajon and Marquis Daniels to carry the team at times this year. Rajon did that tonight for the Celtics.   He pushed this team over the hill.

Box score after the jump.

But hey…6-0 is 6-0. It doesn’t always have to be pretty…It just has to work.

I'm not here to be a troll

But how much did Doc Rivers pay the refs under the table oin those last finals seconds..seriously…that should have been a foul on Garnett..not a Jump Ball…Rondo was Holding Jonny Flynn’s Jersey on the Jump Ball preventing him from Jumping…The Wolves should have had more than 0.9 seconds to shoot the last shot and Perkins fouled Jefferson on the the desperation shot…It wasn’t a win you guys deserved..it was a win that was handed to you.

by TonyO on Nov 4, 2009 10:52 PM EST reply actions

look at the replay

it was clearly a jumpball, the hand was on the ball, no questions. As for Rondo holding Flynn’s jersey, I don’t doubt it, but do you know how much of that stuff goes on in an NBA game? The refs can’t catch everything. And there was no foul on the last shot, don’t be ridiculous. Jefferson didn’t even argue, he just walked right on off. You are here to be a troll.

How can you say you did not come here and troll and start it off by saying “But how much did Doc Rivers pay the refs under the table oin those last finals seconds” That is being a troll.

by NoraG1 on Nov 4, 2009 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

It Was Clearly A Jump Ball

KG had all ball and pinned it against Brewer’s body. If it wasn’t a jump ball it was a walk. If anyone got the benefit it was the T’Wolves.

And since you bring up officiating. It seems better so far this year.

I agree, but I am sure their age is going to be brought everytime they have a sluggish game even though every team goes through it.

true

ESPN Sportscenter posted a graphic that showed the Celtic record on the second-game of road back-to-backs this last couple of years. They actually have done amazingly well. Going something like 5-2 (not the exact numbers) each year while league average is basically to tank that game.

They have only 4 more of those this year, I think.

Check out Scal's weird stat line

+8 in less than four minutes to lead the team, but a bunch of zeroes (and a personal foul)

by LooseCannon on Nov 4, 2009 10:57 PM EST reply actions

Because during the time that Scal played, the C’s outplayed the ’Wolves (Pts scored/ scored against).

by beachbumla on Nov 4, 2009 11:07 PM EST up reply actions

Still a Scal hater?

After the strong role he played late last season when the Celtics needed him so badly, Scalabrine still can’t get a break from his own so-called fans?

Sure he’s not your typical NBA b-baller and he’s not the star of the team, but the guy has been in the league for nearly a decade. Do you really think the coaching staff sees him as a liability, or is it possible that the numbers should be telling you something?

Gritty win

Nice win on the road against a team that was having a career shooting night. Missed called on both sides (Rondo getting hammered under the basket, for one)

by LuckyNumber07 on Nov 4, 2009 11:10 PM EST reply actions

craptastic game

can’t believe they still won. no business winning that game. The box score blows my mind because I thought the starters were laying bricks yet everyone but PP has a decent percentage. Defense was horrible on the first unit. Rondo and Garnett made Flynn and Pecherov look like all stars.

Minnie is a long way from the playoffs based on tonight’s game. Keep Al, Gomes (anyone who says he can’t play needs to take a look at this game), Flynn, Sessions and Love. If Pecherov keeps shooting like that, keep him too. Dump everyone else.

by slamtheking on Nov 4, 2009 11:11 PM EST reply actions

Flynn Looked Like An All Star?

I wasn’t aware 10/5/4 got you on the all star team? And Pecherov had a career night, give the man credit.

by misterx2day on Nov 4, 2009 11:15 PM EST up reply actions

Flynn did whatever he wanted on offense

Blew by Rondo constantly. Made his shots with no hand in his face. Worst defensive game Rondo’s had this year.

career night for Pecherev? no doubt but he was wide open almost all the time

by slamtheking on Nov 5, 2009 6:22 AM EST up reply actions

(@slamtheking) That's MN's plan.

Add Ryan Hollins, Corey Brewer, and rookie Wayne Ellington to that list, and you’ve just named every single Wolves player whose contract doesn’t expire at the end of the year. Rest assured, they will be dumped.

by John Doe on Nov 5, 2009 11:47 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, but Rondo was toying with Sessions in the 3rd quarter

like he was some grade-school opponent. Sessions can shoot but he’s too small to guard even Rondo much less the bigger PGs like D-Will, B. Davis etc.

by Surferdad on Nov 5, 2009 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

Pecherov has been fairly good

ever since he started getting minutes, which he never did in DC. True, he changes ends as slowly as a glacier, but the guy can flat-out shoot. I was worried before the game that the Cs wouldn’t get out and guard him at the perimeter.

I think he’ll stick in the league for a decade as a good, if lumbering, backup C.

He boards fairly well

Pecherov was among the best Wizards last year in terms of the usual rebounding rate numbers, which is what lets Minnesota keep the guy on the floor. The Wolves need outside shooting so desperately….

by feral on Nov 5, 2009 12:25 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

Tired legs == poor offensive shooting percentage == exactly what we saw last night.

Defensively, DESPITE inspired shooting accuracy on the part of the TWolves (52% – and i think it was as high as 56% at one point in the game) the yet again held their opponents to 90 pts (only one other team has scored 90 on them).

The game looked bad mainly because the Celts offense wasn’t working and as you point out – that can largely be blamed on tired legs. The Celtics outright missed a lot of wide-open shots. If those fall, the game would have looked a lot different.

It is notable that both Rondo and Perk (the two ‘youngsters’ in the starting 5) both had stronger offensive games than usual.

by mmmmm on Nov 5, 2009 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

You know something...

The Celtics STILL haven’t allowed a team to score MORE than 90 points. The Timberwolves and Bulls have scored 90, but no more than that.

That includes only allowing 18 points in the 4th quarter. More or less, one part of our game showed up tonight, and that I can sleep comfortably knowing.

by Tai on Nov 4, 2009 11:48 PM EST reply actions

Celts aren't gonna be perfect every night

And eventually they are going to lose, no need to get overworked every game (I know probably will still). Two things I noticed:
Rondo still doesn’t have confidence in his jumpshot. Wouldn’t it be nice if he could just learn a spot-up three point shot and we’d never have to worry about teams playing off of him again? That being said, I loved his energy and movement off the ball in the third quarter.
And the bench wasn’t perfect tonight, but they kept us in the game in the first half and got us the lead for the first time in the second half. Last year, the bench probably would have set the starters back even farther. This bench knows how to extend the lead when we’re up and, at the very least, weather the storm when we’re down.

by misterx2day on Nov 4, 2009 11:55 PM EST reply actions

No confidence builder last night, anyway
Rondo still doesn’t have confidence in his jumpshot. Wouldn’t it be nice if he could just learn a spot-up three point shot and we’d never have to worry about teams playing off of him again?

The Wolves played off Rondo to an extent you seldom see in the league. That there was a full five-yard cushion from the line of scrimmage. And when he finally took a completely open jumper toward the end, there, he muffed it.

by feral on Nov 5, 2009 12:27 PM EST up reply actions

the really good vets know how to win without their best stuff, and that’s what this game was all about. that being said, i wish this talk about being the best defensive team ever, and winning 72 games would stop. we need luck with no or non damaging injuries, and we need kg to heal and get his hops back. flynn looked very good and so did big al in the 1st half.perk was the beast and why they left rondo to roam is the question i have for rambis and his staff.

by nazzbo on Nov 5, 2009 12:32 AM EST reply actions

As far as being the best defensive team ever...

We still haven’t allowed a team to score more than 90 points. If that consistency on the defensive end continues for a while, we can still attain that and keep KG healthy. It’s not like the starters have had to play more than 40 minutes every game. In these 6 games, the starters got to rest for the 4th quarter for half of these games. That’s important considering the Celtics have played 6 games in 9 days; that’s 2 games every 3 days!

We’ll be fine, especially once Scal gets situated again and BBD comes back.

Rondo

I think the reason they left Rondo alone is because that is Rambis’ strategy. He was a coach for the lakers last year and one of the teams he scouted for them was Boston. It was probably his idea for the lakers to leave rondo alone by having kobe roam.

because the Celtics couldn't shoot

a jump shot to save their lives. They missed a ton of wide-open shots.

(Not to mention the T-Wolves shot extremely well – they were at 56% shooting at some point during that game!)

The TWolves defensive scheme wasn’t what kept them in that game.

by mmmmm on Nov 5, 2009 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

With Jesus Shuttleworth you'd have a point

But doubling off of Rondo was deliberate, clearly. Opponents of the Celtics have to pick their poison, and the Wolves chose to give Rajon any outside shot he wanted all game long.

Now, Ray Allen’s three attempts from straight on, those you could make a good argument about.

From the Stat Line

Weak 3-pt shooting (Ray+ Wallace=2/14) helped kept the Wolves in. Legs? Fortunately, the W’s could’nt capitalize (2/11). Taking care of the rock kept the Cs in==only 9 TO’s to W’s 17. Finally, check the scoring distribution. All the starters were in double figures, all the bench had 6 or 7. And. Rondo took the most (16) shots. Again, I say—legs?

by Tenacious D on Nov 5, 2009 7:40 AM EST reply actions

Speaking of Rambis

I was impressed by the way Rambis had the Wolf pups swinging the ball on their offensive sets. The Cs could’nt quite keep up with the rotations, so the W’s were finding open lanes and open looks. Mike Brown (give the ball to Lebron) and Byron Scott (give the ball to Chris Paul) would do well to take some notes…

by Tenacious D on Nov 5, 2009 7:46 AM EST reply actions

Right now it's only half an offense

Minnesota runs a facsimile of the triangle right now about half the time, and at this point the young Wolves are shaky in it. All Jefferson’s two late jumpers from the left? Basically he was in the offense and forced those. Really ugly. In the previous game the Wolves had the ball at the end with no time outs, and Rambis admitted afterward that they just had nothing in place for that situation. They’re that raw.

All in all, Rambis has thus far been an ideal and calming coach for a young team. This is a losing team, but you watch them and his rotations make sense, his time outs are chosen well…. It’s not bad being a Wolves fan and feeling like someone competent is at the helm.

by feral on Nov 5, 2009 12:32 PM EST up reply actions

i agree

the T Wolves are young and have a lot of really nice raw talent. Big Al is a stud, Gomes is solid and Flynn looks like he has some potential.

The triangle is ambitious, though. It has only really succeeded with teams that have a true superstud (Jordan, Kobe) who can clean up the mess through improvisation after somebody screws it up.

If he can make it work without someone like that, I’ll be impressed.

Nice to get more fts than the home team with KG fouling (both hands on whichever Twolf player) constantly

Just enough fts to win, even though they didn’t deserve to. It kills me to see all the touch fouls the rest of the league gets called for inside 15 feet, and KG’s muggings are just completely ignored (but the retaliations from the guy he’s fouling ARE called)…

I’m surprised there’s not one mention of PP playing 41 minutes – not a good sign for the long term.

Still the best team in the league to start the season, but I can’t see it being a record-breaker unless Doc starts limiting the minutes for the 30+ guys quite a bit

—Road game
—Back end of back-to-backs
—Playing an inspired team looking for a big upset
—Getting out-shot badly from the floor {52% vs. 44%}
—Getting out-rebounded

Yet, still getting the “W” !!!!

Just like many Bird/McHale/Parish wins

Upstart team plays tough for 3 1/2 quarters and the vets simply do enough in the last few minutes to win. Last night was not a bad sign, but a very good sign.

by Wildblu1 on Nov 5, 2009 10:01 AM EST reply actions

Wolves were in just a dangerous position

I actually fear the young teams on the road than the good teams a lot of time. Teams like the Wolves have nothing to lose in these games. Everyone expects them to get smashed so they can just come out and play loose and have fun. They just build confidence over the course of the game and make it a close game with a team who is just trying to get through the game and playing on a back-to-back. That’s why the Nets game worries me more than Phoenix..

by BWC on Nov 5, 2009 11:22 AM EST reply actions

The Nets are awful

and Phoenix is playing like the Phoenix of old, if you haven’t been watching. But if the Nets get the #1 pick, and sign a top FA, they’ll turn around rapidly next year. This year is a lost cause. They were stupid, STUPID for giving Anderson to Orlando in the VC deal. Stupid.

Who were those guys

That sure didn’t look like the Celtics. It looked like they needed to be introduced to each other. People wide open and someone hoisting up a contest shot. Unforced turnovers. I can’t believe we only had 9 TOs. It seemed like 25, course Minn really did’t play much defense.

Going back to TOs, many of them last night and every night have me worrying. Many are so stupid, that you’d think a veteran team wouldn’t make them. That’s the lone weakness I see from this team.

A Theory

Last nite the Celts looked like they didn’t have their legs with many shots hitting the front of the rim. We say it is because they are old and were tired, having played the previous nite.
My theory is this__In past seasons KG, Ray and Paul used to play a lot of pick up games. Thus their legs were in game shape at the start of the season. All did something different this summer. KG was rehabbing, Paul was conditioning, changing his diet and losing some weight and I don’t think Ray played much pick up this summer. They all seem to be tinkering with conditioning because they are older and have been playing longer seasons the last two years. Thus, none are really in game shape yet. As the season goes on the legs will become stronger. KG’s timing also seems to be off. Let’s not make too much of these guys being old and tired. All teams, including young ones, have games like this. But when the game was on the line KG didn’t look too tired when he made a big shot and then that great defensive play at the end. And I believe Paul blocked Gomes’ last shot. So the tired old guys seemed to have it when they needed it. The bench this year will give the other guys the time they need to really get in game shape.
