Celtics Outlast Wizards

After watching a 15-point second quarter lead evaporate, the Celtics fought off a gritty Wizards team in the final minutes and extended their winning streak to nine games with a 104-102 victory.

  • Gilbert Arenas missed two vital free throws with 26.7 left, as well as a potential game-tying three with 11 ticks left.
  • Rajon Rondo tallied his ninth double-double of the season with 21 points on 10-20 shooting to go along with 11 assists. He didn't hesitate taking the jump shot all night and his ridiculous baseline slam with 1:12 left in the fourth was clutch. He was the main reason Boston built it's 15-point lead in the second quarter.
  • Ray Allen reached the 20,000 career point plateau on (appropriately) a three-pointer with 4:46 left in the  third quarter. Congratulations to Ray. He finished the night with 18 points.
  • Another day at the office for Kendrick Perkins, who finished with a very business-like 16 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.
  • Washington came in as the seventh best rebounding team in the NBA, but the Celtics won the battle of the boards, 40-34.
  • Kevin Garnett shot over 50 percent from the field once again (8-14 shooting) en route to 17 points.
  • Paul Pierce never found much of a rhythm in this one, but still managed to put up a quality line of 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Tony Allen was...effective? Besides his three turnovers, his eight points, three rebounds and two steals were a big boost off the bench.
  • The Celtics attacked the rim for much of the game, as evidenced by their 37 free throw attempts. Always nice to see them pound it down low.
  • Brendan Haywood gave Perk another tough challenge tonight as he shot 7-7 and finished with 17 points and eight rebounds.
  • The Wizards can certainly score the ball. They'll be a tough out for many teams this season. If they decide they want to play some defense, they could work their way back into the playoff picture before the All-Star break.
  • Chicago's up next on Saturday at 8:00pm.

Rondo continues to be the key to our success…dishing the ball and taking over in the 4th…been a consitent theme this year.

All the talk about KGs great offense, and his shoot has been pure, but he has so many easy oppurtunities bc of rondo, he literally never missed off a pass from him but missed every time he tries to create his own shot

we nearly lost this game

because of Doc Rivers. what was he thinking keeping Ray, KG, and Perk on the bench for so long in the fourth? when did they come in? at the 5:25 mark?

overall, I’m very happy we won. keep on streaking, boys!

by KY Celts fan on Dec 10, 2009 11:05 PM EST reply actions

If Doc had used a time out early in the 3rd Q you'd have nothing to complain about.

This would have been a brutal loss and as far as I’m concerned he would have been the main culprit though not the sole one.

by colincb on Dec 10, 2009 11:58 PM EST up reply actions

Come on now

If he had played them more, all we would here is how he is overplaying and wearing out the starters. Ray played 39 minutes! They were in before the 5:25 mark and they won. We have nearly lost all the games because of Doc these past 3 years according to some, whew, barely escaped with a 66 win season and title, a 62 win season and well on the way to 60+ again.

How much history has to be established over a long period of time to put a stop to the Celtics doing all this winning in spite of the coach? Unprecedented criticism for such a consistent track record of success over a long stretch. I have hardly ever, if ever, read a comment here during all those wins about how the C’s would have lost if not for Doc. Laughable…

by KJ33 on Dec 11, 2009 12:23 AM EST up reply actions

IMO a .535 W% over a 10 year career is not "a consistent track record of success over a long stretch"

I think he’s a good, not great coach. Tonight, he didn’t use a timeout to stop a run when we were clearly suffering a meltdown early in the 3rd.

by colincb on Dec 11, 2009 8:26 AM EST up reply actions

Everyone underestimates how hard it is to get three superstars like PGA to work well together. Doc’s not only done that, he’s had them listening to a much younger point guard and brought in guys who have been problems elsewhere without any issues. Coaching is as much about managing the personnel as managing individual games, and Doc does that brilliantly. He’s out-strategized one of the best coaches in the history of the game in the NBA Finals. KJ33’s right, what will it take?

We used to hear this kind of commentary about Tito as well. With the second World Series ring that pretty much fell to the side. Is two titles what it will take with Doc, too, before people realize he’s a good coach?

The Rondo dunk....

shocking and filthy. I loved it.

When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"

8 pts, 3 rbs, 2 stl in 17 minutes of play.

Well, maybe not back (those TOs), but he does bring energy, He really gets in there and bangs around, where Quis is more of a finesse player. If Toney ever learns to harness that energy,,,

Over the hill? Lol— Ray throws down! Loved seeing the bench come up to mob him after that one. And Rondo’s baseline slam in the closing minute. Woo.

by Tenacious D on Dec 11, 2009 7:21 AM EST up reply actions

Wow -- Guess I am jusdt getting used to Perk having good games

I thought he did nothing tonight and was shocked to see his numbers. Way to go Perk. Great that they can win on a night when the captain is invisible. Although both he and TA played great D on Butler. The C’s win when Rondo takes control of the offense. And, not to bead a dead horse9 (but I will), but the backup point guard need grows stronger by the game. When do you think we will see Tyron Lue in uniform?

by vinnie on Dec 10, 2009 11:19 PM EST reply actions

How can someone play great D

on an opposing teams’ star player yet be invisible? Have we not learned that the C’s are all about D, therefore, if that is where a player was great, did he not have a big impact on the game?

by KJ33 on Dec 11, 2009 12:27 AM EST up reply actions

Hey KY Celts Fan

Quick question. Would you rather run our starters to the floor or have them rest? : ) I don’t know if Doc’s timing was spot on as far as subbing, but I think it says a lot that he’s not going to play the starters 40+ every game just to win a game against the Wizards. If nothing else, he deserves credit, cause I fear he won’t get it later in the season for whatever reason.

Anyways, I would’ve liked to finish the game off in the 3rd when we were up 14, but we can’t “win” them all, right? Still, we did close it out late in the game. I’ll take that. 9 straight wins is looking good when we pull wins like this out of the rabbit hat.

by Tai on Dec 10, 2009 11:22 PM EST reply actions

I'll answer your question with a question

if we had lost this game, would your reaction be “at least our starters got some rest”? if your answer is yes, then I will cede my point. but I just can’t see any fan disregarding the outcome of a game just so the starters can have 3 more minutes of rest. especially a young guy like Perk.

by KY Celts fan on Dec 10, 2009 11:44 PM EST up reply actions

Truth is

Our starters blew the 14 point lead when they could’ve increased it to 25 or so and ended the game come the start of the fourth, so them resting was probably called for. Like I said, maybe Doc should’ve brought them in a bit earlier, but I can’t say we would’ve lost simply because of that.

by Tai on Dec 11, 2009 12:36 AM EST up reply actions

Deshawn Stevenson

Every once in awhile I’m reminded that not only hockey has goons. Just could not believe what a mugging he was giving Ray Allen – grabbing Ray around the picks and on cuts – and how much the refs were letting him get away with it until he finally pushed his luck too far with that foul on Perk.

Also, very interesting to see Rondo try to stay in front of Gilbert at the end of the game by moving his feet. I can only guess he doesn’t do that all game long to save energy (and I’m not complaining about what he does on the other end of the floor!!!) but I’d love to see him stop penetration more often. Would make the defense even better, I think, by preventing mismatches and forced adjustments.

by Sophomore on Dec 10, 2009 11:40 PM EST reply actions

Re: Rondo

I had the same reaction: “Oh, so Rondo can stay in front of people.” He just doesn’t want to. I hope it’s for the reason you indicate—so that he can save energy.

At any rate, he’s awesome, but his pick and roll defense remains frustrating to watch.

by Ahab3 on Dec 11, 2009 8:53 AM EST up reply actions

Rondo has been staying in front of his man at a much better rate, yes he still will go for that behind the back steal, but what more can we ask for other for him to get better and more consitent with it, and he has.
Not like pierce or ray are stopping anybody from the perimeter

by takeit on Dec 11, 2009 9:48 AM EST up reply actions

I'm wondering if they are coaching it

because I spotted Rasheed repeatedly going for it (the behind the back steal) as well. He only got burned by it once that I saw. Only definitely resulted in a turnover once that I saw as well. The other times it just served to annoy the player – which is ok, I guess.

It made me nervous to see a big man doing that, but I will say that ’Sheed impressed me with how fast he was at trying it and then zipping back to the blocking side.

by mmmmm on Dec 11, 2009 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

the second quarter was showcase basketball. the 2nd team was great in the 2nd period spreading the ball around. big letdown in the 3rd. glad he kept rondo on the floor in half 2. ta giveth and he taketh away but he produced and played very good d. of all the c’s, the most deserving of being in the all star game is rondo. he is carrying this team. a sidenote- arenas is a heckuva ballplayer. yeah he missed the free throws but 3 knee operations and 42 minutes…

by nazzbo on Dec 10, 2009 11:42 PM EST reply actions

2d quarter

The Cs played well in the 2d quarter, but I also saw the Wiz do something I haven’t seen the Cs do all year – they looked like they flat-out quit. When the ball came off on a rebound or there was a loose ball, they just stood around and made the Cs look like they were on fast-forward – that’s the quarter we built our rebound edge. And the Wiz’ interior defense… wow.

As lax as the Cs sometimes get, I can’t recall anything this hideous.

by Sophomore on Dec 10, 2009 11:52 PM EST up reply actions

forgot to say congrats to ray for 20,000 and how about 7 rebounds and the rebound to a full court dash to a slam dunk.

by nazzbo on Dec 10, 2009 11:47 PM EST reply actions

was at the game

the refs didn’t help matters much in the 3rd quarter – the wiz played well, but got a lot of touch calls that weren’t reciprocated, which threw our offense off big time. rondo was great – his form on his jumpers is so much better than last year. while the numbers won’t be there, i do think he’ll have a jumper teams can’t sag off by playoff time. ray got mugged by stevenson, and only got called for it when it was insanely obvious. overall, the game shouldn’t have been so close…the calls in the 3rd quarter had a lot to do with it, if for no other reason they threw our rhythm off. defense was actually pretty good – washington just hit a ton of tough shots. that happens sometimes.

No, not likely

All Star selection is not about performance or on-court accmplishment. Just look at T-Mac, he could be a starter without playing a single game.

yeah. i read about that T-Mac in All Star. NBA published it was because of the vote of the Chinese. i’d say its crap! NBA just wants to capitalise it to the whole world. I dont believe on that voting selection process.

the Post JORDAN era all star selection has been capitalized. it became Players who are Flashy in the offense.

I WAS THERE!!!

What a great game to see live! Ray Allen scoring 20,000th point, Paul Pierce hitting 19,000, That sick dunk by Ray Allen in the first half that forced Washington to call a timeout, and of course Rondo’s dunk that left much of the building agonizing.

The person beside me, pissed as he was in the second quarter, just looked at me and said, “Rondo is sick”. People in the building were quietly amazed with Rondo’s performance in the second quarter. You would hear the building agonize whenever Rondo decided to make a move…I don’t mean converting a basket…just making a move towards it. Almost like the pain you hear when Allen is left open behind the 3 point line.

At one point in that second quarter, it was a two man game as the big three simply stood on the wings while Rondo and Perk did all the damage.

But I give credit to the Wizards. They played tough but unfortunately for them, Arenas gifted us with by choking on those Free Throws.

for all the ciriticzm of KG throughout his career about being a 7 foot shooting guard never made alot of sense for the best rebounder of the decade who defended the best big men every night

Well it truly does make sense now, hes rebounding like a guard, is a spot up shooter and cant defend a single big man in the paint..
Honestly i know noone wants to hear it but hes a role player right now in his career, and all his scoring has been off of wide open jumpshots or finishes at the rim off of beautiful set ups from rondo.

Also, as good as PP has been, he has had some pretty inconsistent games

by takeit on Dec 11, 2009 1:30 PM EST reply actions

the beauty of this team

is that you don’t need every one to have their ‘A’ game every night. The Big Four (I’m including Sheed) are all clearly not at the peak of their careers anymore and no one should expect that they are going to be studs every single game. But on any given night, its not unreasonable to expect that two of those guys are going to be ‘ON’. Add in Perk and Rondo who are younger and able to play more consistently and you have a powerful force with the ability to win every game.

Pierce has been the most consistent performer of those Four, game-in-game-out this season. Not surprising because he is the youngest. But even he isn’t going to dominate every game. And he doesn’t have to.

A true team uses each player to best advantage differently against different lineups.

by mmmmm on Dec 11, 2009 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

It’s a little strange to remonstrate Kevin Garnett because Rondo has been playing well. He’s on the mend from fairly major surgery but beyond that, his tenacity and athleticism is as important to his “finishes at the rims” as Rondo’s passes are. He runs the floor hard, has excellent spacing, and has shown through his consistency in jump shots why he is a dominant player. It can also be suspected that his rebounding inadequacies will be extenuated as his lateral movement improves with his conditioning. Rondo has one game where he shoots well (I’m referring to jump shots specifically) and he’s suddenly the most valuable player on the Celtics. That seems a ludicrous and largely unfounded assertion. The only reason he has so many open jump shots is because of the shooting prowess of the three all-star caliber players complimenting him on the court. His jump shots are wide open. What if defenders played off of Ray Allen as they do Rondo, he could easily be averaging significant more FGA/FGM then Rondo is currently. Of course Ray Allen being a dominant and established shooter occludes other teams to play off of him on defense.
Taken all together, Rondo tends to be wide open on his jump shots and, even then, he more often than not struggles converting on those shots. The only reason he’s wide open to begin with is because of the offensive potency that the ‘Big Three’ bring to the Celtics line-up. Defenders can’t play off guys like Paul Pierce or Kevin Garnett, in fact they have to be double teamed if there is a use of an isolation during one of their offensive schemes. The same cannot be said of Rondo.
I agree Paul Pierce has been inconsistent but that may be more attributable to foul trouble and a lack of touches on the offensive end of the floor in recent games than to diminishing value correlated with aging. Kevin Garnett however is the most valuable player on the Celtics, in terms of individual value, leadership qualities, and all around basketball abilities relative to his respective position. I think Boston’s playoff expedition last season amply demonstrates Garnett’s value to the Celtics. Without him the Celtics lack the prospect of a Championship run. While Rondo has proven his pivotal functions within the team its seems like a MLE signing of an above average point guard would attenuate the effects of an unfortunate injury to Rondo. The same cannot be said of Garnett.
Either way, I’m happy they are both playing well, and feel that if they remain consistent they hold a legitimate chance at competing for another championship. One last point, I feel ultimately that the team has to be looked at holistically, where if you take away any one of the starting players then all the other starters are no longer individually as effective (excepting perhaps Paul Pierce, who creates his own offense quite efficiently). Largely, I just think the debasing of Garnett is without significant merit or provocation.
