Celts' win streak ends, lose to Sixers 98-97
- Celtics let Sixers back in it in the second half. They had an 11 point lead at halftime and could not come out in the 3rd quarter and put the game away. Sixers took the lead numerous times in the 4th.
- Just speculating of course, but maybe a practice before this game would have been a good idea.
- Kendrick Perkins was beastly on the boards tonight.
- When Rasheed Wallace comes out with a book after his playing career is through, it should be titled "Technically Speaking". Sheed picked up two more tonight, and was ejected in the 2nd quarter.
- Celtics never got into a nice flow in the second half.
- What in the name of Tim Donaghy was up with some of the calls tonight? Man...
Post game quotes and reaction to come later...

We had a 15-point lead
So the loss is definitely on us…But some of those calls in the last 2 minutes…Sketchy at best. Not blaming the refs though…We blew this one.
Horrible effort, continue to worry about the bench
Of course, if Sheed did not get ejected tonight things would have been better, but without him, the bench gave zero in the second half. I love Eddie House, but he is simply not contributing nearly as much this year as in the past. Scal is absolutely useless, and Shelden Williams does what he is supposed to do. Again, this team needs a real backup point guard, as well as another forward. As for Sheed, it’s going to be fun when he starts getting suspended for games when he hits 16 technicals. He has played well, but his inability to keep his mouth shut is absolutely ridiculous. Thank God TA has a good game tonight.
No Sheed no W!
That’s what you get when you dont have sheed! and it is scary we need a solid Bench!
God, I hate this lost! maybe i was expecting too much?grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrhhhhh.
It was the trap game.
But the Refs were really piling on us. I guess they hate Wallace enough to give the Sixers a game.
Pathetic Second Half
Not even worth discussing. Well deserved loss.
poor effort and poor officiating
the sixers got every call and we got none on our floor no less. WTF was up with that. the no call on Pierce going to the basket when igoudala raked him across the face? notwithstanding we sucked tongiht
GET REAL - the game was called evenly - Celts had 3 less pfs than the 76ers!
Seriously – for you guys to pin this one on the refs is ridiculous…

maybe! freaking refs!
we had good plays but its not going in! i so hate this freakkn lost!
The C's did not move on offense for most of the second half
After they got the 15-point lead, they stood around the rest of the game on offense and basically hoped Rondo could bail them out every time. Those are not good plays. So frustrating to lose at home to such a bad team.
i must agree!
BUT last 5 mins was different but not totally, they had good plays but not enough. i cant get over this game! im going out mann..i hate this!!!!!!!
A few things
Firstly, I don’t blame ‘Sheed for getting tossed, those were awful, awful calls on him, and it just goes to show that NBA refs are like the mafia. You say something bad in the press about them and they’ll get their revenge eventually. What a joke. They’re mercenaries, not professionals.
Secondly, bad decision by KG on the Brand tip-in. Why he switched out on Iguodala 30 feet from the bucket when offensive boards had been killing us all night, I don’t get it.
Thirdly, it’s disconcerting to see Perk being our only consistent rebounder. Shel did work on the glass earlier in the year, but he got pushed around by Speights all night, and KG is hot and cold on the boards. We’ve got to get way better and more consistent on the glass if we want a chance at 18, period.
Lastly, is it just me or do we NEVER run anything towards the basket on a last second shot, regardless of how much time we have to start the possession? It seems like we live or die by the jumper at the buzzer, and to me, that’s not OK considering the success Rondo and Pierce (and even Ray) have in getting to the basket. To just stand around and have Pierce try that same lame turnaround from the elbow (as great as he is at it) at the end of every game gets tiresome.
pierce no free throw attempts
what’s up with pierce. I keep hearing he’s “letting the game come to him” and he’s not forcing anything. Hey earth to Paul we need you man. start playing ball and stop pouting
another streak ending
the C’s had a 60 game winning streak when leading by 15 or more….that streak also ended tonight
celtics are just overrated
stop overrate. i know celtics are the best. just play hard. Don’t underrate any worse teams like philly.
The calls on Sheed were not "awful". And Cs needed to lose.
Sheed was moving when he set that last pick. Way it goes. YOU DON’T THREATEN THE REFS. Rasheed is way, way out of line… he needs to be seriously talked to. Right away.
Cs deserved to lose this game. And they needed to lose this game. They were terrible tonight, and a win would have been counterproductive.
And yes, Kennedy and Richardson should be fired.
That pic is great
I love the look on Thibodeau´s face…
Two things..
One: Paul Pierce’s energy seemed to dip after his failed dunk and he basically just stood around waiting for passes..
Two: Rasheed Wallace needs to realize he hurt the team tonight by not being able to contribute after being tossed..
The team needs to hurt tonight… and bounce back!
I thought Tony Allen played a great second quarter
so that was nice, at least.
-sw
Growing up in the Weinman household, you learn two rules very quickly if you aspire to reach double-digits in the years-of-age category: Hate thy Knick, hate thy Yankee.
Go Celtics, Go Dodgers. -sw
TA was a whole lot better than Sheed tonight
Looking at this game only, who would you rather have on your team? A guy who’s thrilled to be contributing, with that joyful look on his face after making a good play… or a guy who threatens the refs, costs his team two techs, and then disappears for the rest of the game? TA was excellent. KG too. And that’s about all the good that can be said of this night. (Well, Perk put in a decent effort.)
is this the I-told-you- post?
lol.TA was great! his DEFENSE was great. offense definitely. we need an athletic defender. TA over House all day!
Bill Kennedy
is what was up with the calls. Kennedy was fined for goading Doc into a second technical last season and all of the refs were up in arms about ti. I am convinced that he is just getting his revenge for that fine.
Perk is a BEAST!!

Don't Complain About the Officiating
It was just another night in the NBA, and the officiating just illustrated why Tim Donaghy was able to pick the winner of 80-85% of the games played in the NBA (against the spread).
This sort of thing is part of the NBA landscape, and David Stern has no intention of changing it. So deal with it, or take your entertainment sports dollar elsewhere.
We can't win them all, although it seems that way sometimes
The Friday Night Curse Returns. The slow half court game and lack of energy, passing, assists, fast breaks, etc. made a mess of things in the second half. Sheed getting thrown out hurt the team because we need him to give the Bigs a breather to keep the energy up, especially with Big Baby out. Sheed should get fined by the team everytime he gets a technical. The ref Kennedy made lousy calls, no doubt, but grow up, it is part of the game. The more he goads the refs and gets technicals, the more they will look to give them to him.
Garnett and Ray could have squared up a little better on their last shots to win it, but sometimes they go and sometimes they don’t. Don’t let it get you down.
It is great to see Tony Allen contributing. Perk is a beast. Rondo played a little sloppy and got a couple of fouls he didn’t need to get. All this being said, we can have a sloppy game and still go all the way. We must be very careful on Friday nights.
yeah this Friday thing is weird
Im no superstitious but hey its getting really weird.
What I know is We are better at Road games! I’ll focus on that 12-1 streak instead. Celts would be more scarier! Think about it!
Laker fan here....
tough loss for you guys but dont let it bother ya’ll too much. We lost to some awful teams last year at home (including this same Philly team) but we still won the title and everyone forgot about it. Obviously, Sheed getting tossed hurt the bench play but Philly just came up with the plays in the clutch. But I dont expect this one loss to affect a veteran team like the Cs so as fans of them, I wouldnt worry too much. PEACE!!!
and those "Laker" fans trolling here...
just ignore them. The aint real Laker fans anyways and they give our real fans a bad name.

I understand the need to be liked
but how does that make you different that you are a Laker fan and you lump everyone in here defending the Lakers into one group. You agree that not all Celtic fans are the same right? But at the same time you lump all Laker fans into one group. Are you a Laker fan? Are you sure?
wait, wat?
I was saying that all the Laker fans that come in here and just yell, “CELTICS SUCK!!” or “LAKERS ALL THEY WAY!!” are just a bunch of loser trolls who dont have anything better to do than talk trash. Not all Laker fans are like that including me and pslakerfan, for example. Thats all I was saying. :)

A very general statement if you ask me. You didn’t clarify who you did or didn’t include in that statement like you just did now..
you want to list names of these people?
Im not quite getting what your saying here lol

Fakers fans... whatevah
I don’t appreciate Fakers fans coming on a blog that is meant for Celts fans. Don’t you have something better to do than troll our fan site? And while I don’t much like Fakers fans saying things like “Celtics suck”, at least they are being honest. You’re just being passive-aggressive. We don’t really need you coming on here telling us about Sheed hurting the bench. Coming on here after a tough Celtics loss and making comments makes you look more like you’re gloating. Why don’t you just go back to LaLa-Land and take your Faker friends with you.
A reminder from the staff
Trolls will be banned as will our members who respond with curses, masked or otherwise
When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"
define Troll?
I haven’t said anything that isn’t on the same level and I haven’t came close to saying anything that has been said to me. I’m glad you included Celtic fans in that warning but if you look at your rules to joining this site, they seem to be breaking them all up and down this site.
I agree.
Billy Mac: "Lamar, can you see yourself actually getting in the (boxing) ring"?
Lamar Odom: "No. My face is too pretty."
Green17, Another thing I want to point out..
Why do Celtic fans get so upset at someone (a non Celtic fan) visiting this site. Do they not know the motto of SB nation? This isn’t Sbnation.onlyforcelticfans.com. This site doesn’t belong to the Celtics and it’s fans. We are all allowed to visit. If they don’t visit the Lakers site or any other site that is their choice just like it’s my choice to come here. As long as I follow the rules and guidelines. Someone needs to put a stop to them questioning why we can’t come here.
True, SB Nation does not belong to the Celtics. But...
CeticsBlog.com belongs to its owners. They set the rules. If you choose to ignore those rules, you are no better than Rasheed Wallace….. whose disgraceful, childish behavior embarrassed everybody, and cost the Cs the game — not only directly, and not only because they missed his contributions later in the game, but also by the influence his actions had on the refs. (And who knows how far that influence will spread? As we learned from Donaghy, the refs have a club of sorts, and they can conspire, all on their own, to bring down a player or even a team.)
The owners of this site set the rules here. The refs set the rules in a game. There is no point arguing with either…. though the guys here will listen to you if you’re reasonable.
Thnx for replying
The only thing I am pointing out is that I do agree about the rules part. But I wasn’t talking about that. I was talking about the sense of entitlement and the consistent questioning by Celtic fans as to why Laker fans visit this site. That is all I was talking about. Why do they question it? We are allowed to be here. Just look at the comment by QED:
Why don’t you just go back to LaLa-Land and take your Faker friends with you.
If a Laker fan came on here and posted something like that he/she would be banned. Dont your rules apply to Celtic fans also?
I didn't read all that repartee
… but got the general impression that there were pretty bad posts flying all around. No group is monolithic… obviously. Most of us, on all sides, are pretty reasonable, I have found. But always some bad apples, everywhere.
Also… some of what you might take offense from is meant in jest, or at least half-jest. It’s fun sometimes to exaggerate the enmity between the clubs… tho that doesn’t exist for me at all. I like Kobe. I like Fish. Used to like Ariza when he was a Laker (still do). Don’t think your club is very solid, for reasons we’ve discussed before, but I certainly don’t hate your guys (well, SaVu is pretty annoying, and Artest is a known nut, but you know what I mean :)
As a Celtics site, they do allow some of that reasonably-good-natured repartee vs. Lakers fans, and that’s cool. You’re allowed to retort, as it seems you have. They just don’t like it when attacks get to be ad hominem, or excessively so anyway…. which I don’t necessarily agree with (I like my web free-wheeling)… but it is what it is.
I appreciate the tone of your response DRJ, but I have to disagree.....
I see a ton of “you don’t belong here, go away” kind of comments here. I don’t agree that this site is only for Celtic fans. The whole SBNation is set up for people to visit other teams blogs. I see a few Laker a-holes here and they should be dealt with accordingly, but there seems to be an automatic “go away” theme around here for all non-Celtic fans that I don’t see on most SB Nation blogs.
At SilverScreen and Roll they go out of their way to keep the rules fair to everyone and always encourage other teams fans to stay and have civil intelligent discussions. Usually it works but of course there are a few a-hole trolls there as well. I can’t think of more than one instance when someone was banned over there, but I have heard a ton of people say they were banned here for next to nothing. I think it does a disservice to everyone.
If Bill Simmons (just puked a little in my mouth) can see the difference between real hate and fan hate, I think everyone else can too.
(For the record I am typing this in response to your post but that doesn’t mean I am talking about you)
Billy Mac: "Lamar, can you see yourself actually getting in the (boxing) ring"?
Lamar Odom: "No. My face is too pretty."
Just read QED's comments above.....
SSandR doesn’t allow anyone (Laker fan or otherwise) to use terms like Fakers or Celtdicks, or whatever. Don’t you think name calling makes people sound like 8 year olds?
Billy Mac: "Lamar, can you see yourself actually getting in the (boxing) ring"?
Lamar Odom: "No. My face is too pretty."
I didn't see all that
Really, I haven’t read all that nonsense… and I think some of it has been deleted by now. Telling you guys to go away is wrong… but so far as I know, it’s not against the rules, so long as they do it “nicely”. I think. But not sure… I don’t run the place.
In light of the variety in the human genome, I think you need a somewhat thick skin when you venture into a Celtics site as an avowed Lakers fan. Certainly, I would expect that in your shoes or if the situation were reversed. But it’s worth it, from your pov, I think, because you really get a feel for the other side… and something very different from what you’re used to… plus there are enough of us reasonable types in here to keep it interesting… or at least keep it from degenerating into kindergarten.
Read for content not color...
I made two posts on this thread: The first post actually gives props to the Fakers road record and props to Pine-sol, and plainly states that the Fakers are a team to be taken seriously. So while the color may have seemed to lack respect, the content was overwhelmingly respectful. 2) The issue of trolls coming here is that that they come in droves after a Celtics loss, and whether they are giving condolences or just plain being nasty, they seem to be here to gloat and relish in our losses. So I’d prefer that they come on here when the Celtics win to give us props, which much to your chagrin is most of the time. But if they’re going to come here when we lose, and our mood is a little on the foul side, they’re going to get the brunt of our discontent. (Does that truly sound like the syntax of an 8 year old?)
There is nothing out of line about calling the purple and gold Fakers if at the same time you give the team their due respect, which I did. Think of the term Fakers as a sarcastic term of endearment. I acknowledged they have credibility, but I don’t have to like that they are doing well, in fact I should be able to openly, albeit tastefully, curse their prosperity. Calling them things like Fakers or Pine-sol, is just good natured ribbing. It’s a sports tradition for God sakes.
I have no genuine hatred for Angelinos. in many ways Celtics fans and Lakers fans are alike; we fans are both very proud of our basketball heritage and have a mutual hate/respect for our respective worthy adversary. We have a healthy rivalry, nothing more, and nothing less. You seem to be taking thing out of context and driving home a point that is lost in the reality of it all. Perhaps you’re just having a bad day and using the fuel from that not so nice day in the Southern California paradise to hurl barbs at the Celtics faithful. I hope you have a nicer weekend… but I still hope you guys lose tomorrow ;)
Peace
If we lose to the Nets you have my permission to come to SS andR and say whatever you want.
We will have deserved it.
As far as your comments toward Laker fans, I think maybe you should just treat every fan as their own person and not lump them together. Of course we are all guilty of it, I think all Nuggets fans are douchebags.
Billy Mac: "Lamar, can you see yourself actually getting in the (boxing) ring"?
Lamar Odom: "No. My face is too pretty."
I went to bed after posting that so here is your delayed reply.
I was not referring to you, you weren’t trolling (notice you were not banned). pslakerfan wan’t banned either.
To be clear – ANYONE is welcome here as long as they can conduct themselves with civility and engage in conversation intelligently. The loser troll that was banned was not doing that, nor was our member who I banned.
When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"
Don't talk trash like a bunch of PUNKS
Much respect for the Lakers. Look at their record. Look at ours. If the lord doesn’t take either team down with injuries, they will both be there in the Finals. Know thy enemy, respect them, prepare for them, and use your last ounce of energy and all your heart and brains to beat them. This is one of the greatest rivalries in sports. I think our talent (like 5 all star starters) and the Celtic experience and team play will beat them. Root on fans!
haha Well said!
Lets pray for an injury free year for these teams and lets bring the NBA back to prominance wiht another Lakers/Celts Finals.

inexcusable loss
Hang this one on Pierce and then Sheed. PP brought nothing to the game. No coincidence they really started pulling away when TA replaced him in the game. As soon as PP came back in before the half, Sixers start closing the gap.
TA looked like pre-injury TA. that was a pleasure to watch.
Sheed’s behavior was irresponsible. He needs to smarten up and just play harder rather than run his mouth and rack up techs.
House is contributing less as the season progresses.
Unfortunately, KG and Perk’s recent run of high percentage shooting ran out tonight. Several shots KG was open for in the 2nd half just didn’t fall.
one other thing
the officiating was absolutely atrocious. C’s still lost the game due to their own carelessness in the 3rd quarter, not due to the refs although they certainly didn’t help the situation.
Bill Kennedy must be a cohort of Donaghy. has to be.

This is a story about failed expectations
About a team that started thinking it was invincible. A team which forgot that hustle is how you win. One of them, Rasheed, seems to think the game is all about him, his ego, his experience… so what if he costs the team two techs, his services, and the game? At least he got to threaten the ref for a second.
About 6 minutes into Q4, I began to feel that the Cs needed to lose this game. If they won, it would set a very bad precedent. When you behave this badly, when you play this badly… you need to lose, lest you think you can get away with that kind of behavior and play. “Oh no, you can’t,” said the universe. “And since you’ve forgotten what this game is about, here’s a reminder. You lose. To Philadelphia. Got that?”
This is not to excuse the refs, who were terrible and should be fired (two of them, anyway). But the fault, dear Celtics, is not in our refs, but in ourselves.
Losing is part of winning
No one has ever had an undefeated season. Don’t expect one. A loss doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger. They are the freakin’ Celtics and they must be reminded that you have to play every minute of every quarter to win. I, for one, am not worried.
part of me wishes
that the 76ers would have won their game against the Cavaliers on Wednesday and instead dropped tonight’s game, considering the fact that Allen Iverson was injured in the game vs the Cavs (at home) and was unable to play tonight (that makes two SGs in Philly on the inactive list).
Given the fact that Rasheed got ejected early in this one, and Glen Davis is still gone this was still bound to be a sloppy one — either way we shouldn’t be too worried about a team like the 76ers surprising us; it’s better for us to go into the Christmas Day game without a huge winning-streak because we will avoid having a huge target on our back.
- Remembers back to last year’s Christmas game and the uncomfortable sensation of hearing rabid Lakers fans in the Staples Center audience chanting BOSTON S*CKS! as we try, in vain, to mount a fourth quarter comeback as the final moments of our 19 game winning streak come to an end in nightmarish fashion. I remember the severe depression I felt during this time knowing that the only thing that I really wanted for Christmas last year was for the Lakers to lose to the Celtics — this moment pretty much epitomizes my hatred for the Lakers, because after the Christmas game the C’s never really bounced back (later in the season we lost another close one to them, in overtime) and later in the season Kevin Garnett went down with an injury after botching an alley-oop pass from Rondo**
Either way I will not have fully recovered from the mental anguish that I suffered through last season, watching an incomplete Celtics roster do battle with the giants of the Eastern Conference last post season until we manage to avenge ourselves by beating the Lakers at least once during this years season — hey, If we beat them badly enough, it might scare them away from showing up again at the finals, where we beat them two years ago (not saying the rest of the Western Conference are a bunch of push-overs, but hey — revenge is a dish best served cold).
Either way our away record is something that opposing teams should be nervous about, if we don’t take care of the Eastern conference we will still have decent odds at winning an ‘away’ series, but right now obviously it’s too early to tell…
Sheed will never change
And even if he tried to … if I were an NBA ref I would screw him on every borderline call and make it my goal to provoke him into getting ejected every game I worked. You don’t menace, physically threaten, and humiliate a group of guys (who get paid so much less than you) for 10 years and expect anything else.
Why do you guys think...
That you have an amazing road record, but so-so home record? Boston has been money at home the last couple of years. To be fair, the season is still young, and things will probably even out as the year goes on. But very impressive road record so far.
'Sheed will be 'Sheed, but the TEAM lost this one
’Sheed got his 2nd tech for saying that he was going to get his 1st tech overturned after the game. With a guy like Bill Kennedy, that was enough.
This loss was brewing for a while, I’ve seen signs of our ball movement diminishing and guys not setting picks, etc. For most of the night, we would make a pass or two and then the ball would stick and the rest of the guys would stand around like their feet were in cement…
Pre-injury TA made an appearance tonight and it was a thing of beauty. Loved the post-dunk gut-scream. Lots of frustration for TA came out in that dunk—he’s worked incredibly hard to get back from all the injuries and that hard work is now paying off. TA dominated the game for about 10 minutes in the 2nd quarter. Not too shabby.
