Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

Open Season: C's Shoot The Bucks

The Bucks made it interesting near the end, but the Celtics turned in a good all around effort to extend the win streak to 8.

  • Rondo messed around and nearly got a triple double.  Added 5 steals too.
  • Jennings scored 17 but turned it over 5 times.  Advantage Rondo.
  • Defense held the Bucks under 90 points.
  • Another big game for KG with 25 points, including a key bucket down the stretch.
  • Bogut (whom I like to call Booger) had a very solid game with 25 points of his own (plus 14 boards, 5 assists, and 2 blocks).  Which is what a #1 pick should do.
  • All 5 starters scored in double figures and Wallace added 13 of his own.  This is happening quite a bit lately.  I like it.
  • Tony Allen lives!  And was good for 2 fouls, 2 turnovers, and no points in 5 mintues of work.  Just sayin'.
  • Nice solid win.
  • Update on Daniels: He will get an MRI and will miss at least the next two games.

Jennings scored

17 on 19 shots* Bigger advantage Rondo

Agreed on the solid win, this is a good Bucks team with some potential.

Not going to complain about 8th win in a row

but I certainly would not call this a solid win. Our bench, except for Sheed, gets scarier by the game.

Hmm

Found this interesting:

Unsung hero:Rasheed Wallace hit 5 of 8 shots overall (including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc) to finish with 13 points off the bench. The Celtics are now 12-0 when Wallace makes two or more triples.

No wonder Rasheed likes jacking up 3’s. : D Although, he didn’t do a lot of jacking tonight.

Still, very good win by the C’s. Good to see Rondo take over in the 4th quarter. And, we kept another team under 90 points.

rondo was outstanding, in total control of the offense at all times and plenty good on d. i can’t say enough about him. kg.pp, and ray very good, kg in the stratosphere. not impressed with perk tonite. he made the bunnies he was given and was clearly outhustled and outplayed by bogut. he was leaving early to get downcourt and leaving the boards open to the other team. no leadership on the 2nd team. scal was flat out terrible and got way too many minutes. and he was thugging it- not impressed. sheed was the light and played well. eddie couldn’t hit but was hustling and playing d. and too many flat out tony haters here. it was his first game of the season. the effort was there-just out of synch. these old pros do know how to win but they need more help.

by nazzbo on Dec 8, 2009 10:48 PM EST reply actions

'thugging it'???

Scal’s foul was tactical – it was the right play at the time because the C’s had a foul to give.

Just what, exactly was ‘flat out terrible’ about his play?

by mmmmm on Dec 8, 2009 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

tony has had too many first games of the season

every game is tony’s first game of the season, if you know what I mean… I just don’t get it…

ice cube?

I like it Jeff, haha, full of suprises

Nice to see the team close out the game strongly like that.

Have to love the fact that KG keeps getting better, very encouraging stuff.

Bucks are certainly NOT a good team

They are, in fact, a terrible team. This should have been a blowout.
- The Cs got 17 steals in this game. Rondo alone got five. 17 steals in one game. Bucks could NOT hold on to the ball.
- Jennings may get great someday, but he’s not there yet. Far from it… and pretty easy to defend.
- Bogut is the least athletic starter in the NBA… he should NOT have been allowed to light the Cs up for 25 points.
- TA is a moron — couldn’t help but lol when he threw the ball, ostensibly to Scal, out of bounds. But of course. Sorry Doc, but you’re a moron too if you give this guy PT.
- KG & Rondo: great. PP & Perk & Sheed and even Ray: good to very-good.

by DRJ1 on Dec 8, 2009 10:55 PM EST reply actions

I dont know

I think Bogut is deceptively quick and surprisingly balanced. He’ll never be described as a good athlete, but can you honestly say that Perk is anymore athletic than him? I certainly can’t. The guy is good, and has flown under the radar for a while, that can’t be denied.

by misterx2day on Dec 8, 2009 11:16 PM EST up reply actions

Bogut may not be athletic

but he has a hell of an accurate hook shot. That shot was pretty much impossible to defend.

Did anybody else notice just how horrid TA’’s form was on his free throw shot? My god, he made Rondo look like Ray Allen by comparison.

by mmmmm on Dec 8, 2009 11:17 PM EST up reply actions

So let’s all dump on TA, who hasn’t played in a year, and give Scalabrine, who was atrocious, and Eddie House, who was slightly less atrocious, a pass.

And, BTW, the Bucks are not a terrible team. For starters, they were playing without Michael Redd. Bogut and Ilyasova looked pretty good to me, and Jennings is going to be a player if he learns how to see the floor. That will come over time, assuming he wants to be a complete player and not just a chucker.

by Brickowski on Dec 8, 2009 11:17 PM EST reply actions

Excuses don't make them good

The reasons you give for why the Bucks are not very good now are all good… and help prove the point that they’re a bad team right now. They may one day get to be a good team, but they’re not that now.

As for Scal and Eddie… yeah, they both sucked too. But neither of them is anywhere close to the brainlessness of one Tony Allen.

by DRJ1 on Dec 9, 2009 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

The pass that Allen threw away was Scalabrine’s fault, not Allen’s.

by Brickowski on Dec 9, 2009 12:14 AM EST up reply actions

Glad to see someone else saw Scal fumble away TA's pass

I’m really hoping TA is able to show enough to Doc to stay in the lineup when Daniels is ready to return. Frankly, I haven’t been all that impressed with Daniels so far. Wasn’t he supposed to be the de facto point guard? House and Pierce play more point with the second unit than he does,

I remember when Pierce was injured for a long stretch and TA was the best player on the team until he tore up his knee. Consistent minutes – not just 4 or 5 a game – is what he needs. Besides he can be another ball-handler in the point guard by committee on the second unit. If that means Scal taking a seat on the bench, even better.

We might want to cut Jennings some slack. He’s a rookie and a young one playing a difficult position. I can’t seem to remember Rondo being nearly as good in his first year.

As for Bogut, who cares about his athleticsm or lack thereof? He scores, he rebounds and he passes.

by lemonade sky on Dec 9, 2009 12:34 AM EST up reply actions

uh...

I remember that when Pierce was injured Gerald Green was scoring 20 points some games (he averaged 10.4 ppg that season). In case you didn’t get the memo: what happens in ‘06/’07 stays in ‘06/’07…

And how can people STILL make the argument that Tony Allen is a ballhandler? How many offensive fouls on fast breaks will it take? He is the NBA’s career leader in that stat I promise you.

by milt palacio's shot on Dec 9, 2009 5:46 AM EST up reply actions

also...

forgot to mention that when Tony Allen was the best player on the team they went on an 18 game losing streak

by milt palacio's shot on Dec 9, 2009 5:48 AM EST up reply actions

Regarding TA when Pierce was out several seasons ago (in the Dark Times)...

He was dominant for those 20 games or so before he tore up his knee. Kind of like a homeless man’s Dwyane Wade.

But I don’t think we’ll ever see TA play that well again.

by Ahab3 on Dec 9, 2009 9:03 AM EST up reply actions

The bucks arent an awful team, theyve beat some decent teams this year (chicago, denver, charlot) and lost by less than 3 points to Dallas, NO, Washington and Orlando. Theyre the team that fly’s under the radar, and then ruins your night because you didnt take them seriously, so I think this was a good win, and an impressive finish.

Also, the second unit didnt look all that bad. TA hasnt played in a long time and deserves a chance, he was a really valuable part of the bench in 07-08 and people somehow forget that due to one bad, injury plagued season. My only complaint is that I would have liked to see Williams play more, I am not sure why but he has hardly played lately, and he could really help rebounding for the second unit.

One more thing is I think Perk should play more minutes. Not every night, but in games where we are getting horribly out rebounded like tonight. It seems like the only time he grabs alot of boards is when he plays 32+ minutes so maybe he needs to be in that groove to hit the boards and rough people up. Rebounding is by far our biggest problem, and we would be destroying every team if it werent for second chance points.

by chilli on Dec 9, 2009 12:27 AM EST up reply actions

yeah, watching all those lost rebounds is aggravatin'

As I said elsewhere – we tend to play shoot & run – that is, the moment our shot is up, our guys are already heading back down court to play defense. Thus we are sacrificing offensive boards in order to play better defense. That works in general if we are taking high-percentage shots due to our offense creating good looks.

It gets more aggravating on the other end, where we are giving up a lot of offensive boards – and second chance shots – to the other teams. We play great defense, forcing a crappy shot only to allow them to put back the miss. Aaargh!

by mmmmm on Dec 9, 2009 2:04 AM EST up reply actions

The charwoman of the board.

Scalabrine: 110 minutes, 4 rebounds, zero foul shots made, zero foul shots taken. Sell him to the WNBA, if any team will take him.

by Celtsfansince55 on Dec 9, 2009 2:18 AM EST reply actions

all you had to say was "zero foul shots taken"

unless you are mad at him for not making foul shots he didn’t take? Do WNBA players not take foul shots? What’s your point, exactly?

Four rebounds sucks, but Scal fills a role on this team. That role is to be a last option who can hit an occasional three, and otherwise facilitate other guys’ scoring, NOT take it to the hoop. He takes some charges, plays some team defense, and gives fouls.

by milt palacio's shot on Dec 9, 2009 5:55 AM EST up reply actions

Scal is horrible; why is he taking shelden's minutes?

Cons:

*Never creates turnovers on D
*never gets rebounds.
*Seems afraid to shoot half the time.

  • Ridiculously low usage rate.

Pros:
*People say he plays good team D, but I fear that’s code for “he’s slow, fat, and unathletic, but he gives a good interview”.

  • Hits the open three at a good clip.

Going by Hollinger’s stats, Shelden’s PER is 15.78, Scal’s is a MISERABLE 6.29. For a bit of perspective, only 4 players in the NBA who have played enough minutes to qualify for Hollinger’s rankings have a worse PER than Scal’s. He’s ranked 310/314. That’s bad.

I conclude that Shelden should play more and Scal should play less.

by Ahab3 on Dec 9, 2009 9:11 AM EST up reply actions

only caught the last quarter

but was impressed with how far Bogut has come. He’s starting to look like a high-quality center. Jennings wasn’t terribly impressive. very athletic but a chucker. Toine would be proud.

Can’t believe this team is still having issues controlling their own boards. Constantly saw Bucks crashing the boards without being blocked out and the C’s big men (mostly Perk) heading up court before the ball was secured. I just don’t get why this is problem still lingers.
