This One Goes To 11

Bigalhug_medium

Former Celtics Big Al, Gomes, and Telfair combined for 61 points but it wasn't enough to stop Paul Pierce and the current Celtics, even without former Timberwolf Kevin Garnett. The Celtics streak is up to 11 (enjoy a video after the break).

Fun game to watch. I never thought the game was in jeopardy. Loved the energy of the second unit in the second quarter. Great to see POB out there filling some space. Too bad Doc wouldn’t play him in the second half.

I can’t help but love Big Al. What a great low post player, and a good person as well.

Was it my imagination or did Kevin Love complain every second he was out on the floor?

Everybody did their job, except...

… Powe, who did some things right, but continues to struggle. I don’t get it, but it’s getting old, Leon.

i found myself rooting both ways at times. pp was superman again and was the game. big al has gotten smoother. i would rather have gomes than tony even tho tony is faster, has more hops and paul ate ryan’s lunch. gomes is more consistent, predictable and plays within himself. powe looks like a head case and was hurting the c’s in the 4th period, even tho he had a coupla moments. love was tough out there but there was no kg to keep him honest. i still can’t believe all the minutes telfair was given over rondo. where is waldo? uh, i mean gabe?

Same here

I found myself as well rooting for both teams. Good game to watch all around, the celtics had times where I think they just stood around and showed little to no ball movement.

Seemed to be in the middle of the 4th Doc decided to go to Leon in the post to get Big Al in foul trouble, which worked to the Timberwolves advantage.

Other than that no complaints, but I would like to see Pierce or Allen bring the ball up instead of House, if Tony Allen is going to be in the game.

Big Al we miss you………

Turn it up to 19 volume again - Louder!!!

Nice video Ranter – pretty good find for “11”. Po(we) did hurt us I agree nazzbo, and so did Big Baby. Neither one can make a layup lately. But I have faith in both as they both have playoff experience and have proven (especially Po(we)) that they can play well and consistently in big games. They both rebound nicely and give 100%.

Tony Allen on the sidelines in the 4th Qtr looked like his medication wore off as he seemed a bit too animated on Celtic made shots. Giddy Up Tony

I still miss Gomes and Big Al and Al is an All-Star without question.

Is it Soup Yet?

by Master Po on Feb 1, 2009 3:40 PM EST reply actions

I miss Big Al but not Gomes. It was kind of pathetic watching Gomes trying to guard Pierce.

The Wolves could really use a healthy Corey Brewer. Their guards and big people are decent, but their wing players are terrible, particularly defensively. Pierce, Ray Allen and Tony Allen scored 70 points.

by Brickowski on Feb 1, 2009 4:00 PM EST reply actions

That’s really the main problem with Gomes, there’s not a position on the floor he can guard. He’s a good player for spot minutes on a good team but he’s never going to be a regular rotation guy on a very good team. Al Jefferson is an excellent offense player. I want all of those young guys to succeed. Telfar too.

???

How does Al Jefferson not make the All-Star game?

by B-ball on Feb 1, 2009 4:13 PM EST reply actions

Because Shaq is playing in his last….for sentimental reasons, the league wants Shaq, Kome and Phil reunited….Its like this is the way the coaches were thinking, Big Al will be having multiple selections in the future, but this might be Shaq’s last so that was given.

Very entertaining game

Gomes couldn’t handle Pierce. That was the game. Telfair needs to hit the outside shot better than today. If so he’ll justify the minutes McHale gave him. I like Minny. Al is awesome, Gomes a solid pro, Love not bad for a 20 yr old. Mike Miller doesn’t scare me anymore. Don’t know what happened to him. Tony Allen deserves props – 2 steal, no TOs He was aggressive. Rondo is just getting better. A joy to watch. Big Baby got the better of Craig Smith.
O’Bryant got in but looked lost. Missed a pass from Pierce and Pierce was yakking to Doc afterward. He needs more minutes to get settled and it would have been interesting to see him in 2nd half except the killed us in 3rd Qtr.

Aww man-love, so cute! Wish we still had Big Al, maybe we can lure him back in a few years if he doesn’t end up getting some ridiculous contract.

I’ve always wondered if it’s embarrassing to get your shot blocked by Rondo or House. Is it like: Hey I scored 30pts last game! Yeah, but you got your shot blocked by someone who’s 6 feet tall.

A nice win.

I thought both teams played very well. Jefferson is a load. He had 34 pts, 11 rebounds and 4 block shots. He should have been picked for the All-Star game. He’s averaging 23 and 11 for the season. I really like what Randy Foye did too. He’s a nice player for them.

Gotta give Pierce some props. He was on fire today. When he plays like that, it’s gonna be really tough to beat us. He had a very efficient 36 points. Rondo had a great game too.

I’m looking forward to the game on Wednesday. I think we’re ready for them. I hope Garnett will be ready. We’re going to need him.

GBB!!!

what a travesty

that Big Al didn’t make the all-star team. David West, really??!?!?! I am 100% enamored by Big Al, and part of me really wishes we still had him as he develops into one of the league’s premier big men… but of course, there’s no way we would have won #17 last year with him and without KG. So, yeah, happy about the trade, but Big Al is just classy and dirty- in a good way!

We Have That Man

Perk is the BIG for his defense. That is what is needed by this team. Big Al is needed for the T’Wolves because he’s the only guy who can score consistently. I’m really happy for him. He was doing the same things he did today in the 2nd half of his last year with the C’s, but has improved in every aspect of his offensive game. Perk would not work in MN. Al would have to play differently here.

by TrueGreen on Feb 1, 2009 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

Also, things might be a bit different

when the reigning DPoY is healthy and helping patrol the interior with Perk. Not exactly a non-factor.

Hand Clencher

Thought this game was in doubt. I really didn’t like the way the C’s played—not pushing the ball, but some of the post-game comments explained the change in chemistry with the starters without KG. This was one of those games where PP had to take over and he did. Ray Allen mentioned in his post-game interview that he realized this and was looking for Pierce. I started thinking about LeBron and Kobe who seem to dominate every game while PP delivers what is needed per game and per situation. It’s amazing he can turn it on and off. As KG would say: “the phone booth is always available when needed”. Also am concerned that the flu may be running thru the team. Don’t get upset if we lose a few games this week.

CNNSI?

Did Jeff get the title to this story from CNNSI or did CNNSI steal the title from Jeff?

interesting

+/- from the game… i wonder if they are meaningful or just flukes.

by Brendan on Feb 2, 2009 12:25 AM EST reply actions

I mentioned this is the game thread

I was on ESPNS gamecast during the game and early in the first quarter, before any substitutions had been made, our five starters had three different +/-‘s. Pierce and Perk were listed as -1, Rondo & Baby +1 and Ray +3.
It’s impossible for all five of our starters to be on the court for the same period and yet have different
+/-‘s. I’m beginning to wonder just how accurate a lot of these stat sites are and where they get their statistics.
