Tony Allen Injured - Updated

UPDATE:

Tony Allen didn’t accompany the team to New Orleans today after injuring his left thumb in practice, but contrary to a team report that X-rays taken on the thumb were negative, a Celtics source said today that the guard has actually suffered torn ligaments.

It was unclear how much time he would miss in the event of a ligaments tear.

Allen plans to rejoin the team next Tuesday in Utah following the all-star break, when he is scheduled to meet with team physician Dr. Brian McKeon. Until then, he has been ordered to keep the thumb wrapped and stabilized.

----------------

From Celtics.com

Tony Allen sustains left thumb injury. X-ray was normal, but he will miss the next two games and be re-evaluated on Tuesday.

The site also reports:

Brian Scalabrine and J.R Giddens are not practicing today. Check Celtics.com for more details this afternoon.

Is it bad that

my first thought after reading this was: Gabe freed again? Please?

by illantari on Feb 10, 2009 2:21 PM EST reply actions

Too bad for Tony...

This too bad for Tony he just can’t seem to stay healthy. I hope this gives Gabe and Bill Walker some time.

by liamail on Feb 10, 2009 8:28 PM EST up reply actions

Ugh. Not sure it’s THAT much a downgrade to go from TA to Gabe (well, Good Tony’s a lot better, but Bad Tony’s a lot worse). But, injuries are starting to add up… All Star break can’t get here soon enough.

by theBird on Feb 10, 2009 2:29 PM EST reply actions

Great, we will start wining again…

by thebirdman on Feb 10, 2009 2:29 PM EST reply actions

Is Giddens back with the team?

I thought he was sent back down to the D-League.

As for Tony… well, I can’t say that I’m that broken-hearted, honestly. Even when he’s individually doing well, he seems to slow down our ball movement. I hope he spends the off-season learning to 1) shoot and 2) dribble with his head up.

rest through the All Star break. Good stuff.

tony is not consistent but let’s not scapegoat the guy. the coaches are making the decisions.

by nazzbo on Feb 10, 2009 2:38 PM EST reply actions

Not a big deal, I honestly think he makes us worse, whether hes individually playing well or not

Trade on the horizon?

What’s that supposed to mean, check celtics.com for more details.

Injury-Prone

Man, that’s 3 injuries in 3 months. And this is a guy who needs consistent health to play consistently. At least he’ll get almost 2 weeks off, that should be enough to get healthy. Anybody know when this injury was sustained?

by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Feb 10, 2009 3:07 PM EST reply actions

if gabe gets the nod i expect much better ball movement from the second unit. with pruit handling the ball i bet house has a big night shooting the 3 ball.

scal and giddens trade? never thought i’d say this but, can we afford to loose the redhead?
he was playing great before the concussion and was our glue guy on coming off the bench… just sayin’

by arctic 3.0 on Feb 10, 2009 3:23 PM EST reply actions

well

obviously it depends on what we get back

Scal

Scal def has improved his trade value over the past month.

by Champzilla on Feb 10, 2009 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

disagree

he’s not worth much to anyone but the Cs or a very D-minded up-and-coming team. that, or to someone who makes more than he does, or with a longer contract. I could see Larry Brown liking him. I could see Pop liking him. but you see my point.

by ssspence on Feb 10, 2009 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

But I think Scal could be good for a maybe a young playoff team that needs a strong vet for locker room situations and can come up big when called upon.

by Champzilla on Feb 10, 2009 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

right...

like a NJ or CHA. i hear you. actually was thinking about Felton this morning, but gonna take more than Scal and Giddens. Scal Giddens and Powe?

by ssspence on Feb 10, 2009 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

Scal

Scal during preseason was worse than horrible, he had completely zero value. I actually thought scal was going to be a huge liability with all his turnovers and missed shots. When he took over for Perk he stepped up big and really helped the team with a lot of games with his vet leadership.

by Champzilla on Feb 10, 2009 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

Bittersweet...

They should’ve scheduled him for a brain CAT scan with that thumb x-ray…

God bless and good night!

by BrickJames on Feb 10, 2009 3:35 PM EST reply actions

Giddens??

J.R. Giddens played for Utah last night. They were in Erie PA so I guess he could have been called up since then. Could they have meant Walker?

by furball2323 on Feb 10, 2009 3:58 PM EST reply actions

What if...?

The 3 of them are being sent together on a trade? hehe

It's official

the Tony Allen can replace James Posey experiment is OVER!!

by The Real Large James 2 on Feb 10, 2009 5:30 PM EST reply actions

Scal

Before Scal’s injury he was proving to be more of a Posey replacement that TA

by jpd985 on Feb 10, 2009 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

Posey was great but...

not giving him four years STILL makes sense. If you accept Celtics statements – Posey signing meant House/T Allen gone – then I’m fine with that. House has been the 3 pt element, T Allen is a good defender and driver ,and Scal can come close to Posey defending a 4. Added together we can get the Posey job done. Posey is more missed for his unique camraderie than his skills.

by Wildblu1 on Feb 10, 2009 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

this must be why Ainge kept saying we wouldn’t replace Pose with one guy’s contribution – that it would take a committee to replace. turns out to be correct.

If the choice was between having Posey & Scal or Scal, House, and TA -— I think we made the right call

by D Dub on Feb 10, 2009 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

Ainge was going to make the wrong call then

He offered Posey a 3 years contract. Of course we still would have signed House or some other backup guard.

by cordobes on Feb 11, 2009 6:19 AM EST up reply actions

Pose

played the SF and PF, House plays the SG and a lil SF. He never should have been viewed that way

by Brendan on Feb 10, 2009 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

House plays a lil SF? That's a new one.

The guy’s not even 6 foot. I just wish he could play a lil PG.

Free Gabe.

I’m sorry on an individual level for Tony.

So many injurys lately

A lot teams are getting banged up. Good thing AS break is coming up.

by Marqui on Feb 10, 2009 6:27 PM EST reply actions

Wow

I really can’t see this at all. People would rather have House/TAllen than Posey given the fact that our veterans have at best two years win again. I just don’t see it. BTW, look out. The Lakers might make a move for Andre Miller.

by The Real Large James 2 on Feb 10, 2009 6:31 PM EST reply actions

I think Scal is the factor your not including here. Posey and Scal play the same position, which means to sign Posey you are basicly deciding to have 2 backup forwards, and no backup guards. Scal, TA & House is a much more balanced bench than just Scal and Posey.

And lets be honest here, Scal is playing Posey’s bench role just fine – it’s not like we are talking about a 20ppg scorer here. Without Brian on the team, the Posey thing is a disaster – with him in the fold, its a good move.

by D Dub on Feb 10, 2009 8:07 PM EST up reply actions

No

Posey can play 3 positions – at the wing and at the 4. Scal can’t guard 99% of the NBA wings, he’s not quick enough. Only nominally he can play there. It’s not even close.

People really struggle to understand the importance of players like Posey, I guess. Throughout his career he was the 2nd/3rd best player in 50 wins teams and a top4/5 player in championship teams. Scal is not even remotely close to that level.

Besides, the idea that Ainge would just sign Posey but no backup guard is laughable. It’s not like Ainge decided he didn’t want Posey for the next 3 years.

by cordobes on Feb 11, 2009 6:24 AM EST up reply actions

Not sure how I feel about TA with another injury. On one hand the bench could pick up their play in his absence. Its another chance to see what Gabe has to offer. The bench was playing so well when he was injured the last time are they going to do that again? And will his return disrupt their progress. If he’s going to be injury prone this season can the team really count on him to be the 6th man going into the play-offs.

by twinbree on Feb 10, 2009 7:15 PM EST reply actions

Injuries can be mother of necessity

We weren’t going to see Walker or Giddens get any time if T Allen stayed healthy. When good Tony checks into game I like that skill mix. But I still want to see more O’Bryant and I’d like to see Walker/Giddens in game situation. Gabe Pruitt had some good reps and after a few bad ones he got nailed back to bench. Doc isn’t negative to his players but he is tough on them.

by Wildblu1 on Feb 10, 2009 8:08 PM EST reply actions

sounds like the hater’s will get their wish and get to see Tony sit for a long while.

just don’t come with the ‘we need a slasher off the bench’ posts in the meantime…

by D Dub on Feb 10, 2009 8:08 PM EST reply actions

Develop the bench and settle into a strong 2-seed

With Nelson’s injury, Orlando is no longer a threat to the 2-seed. Make sure the starters aren’t playing huge minutes and develop the role players. Be rested for the playoffs and the 2 seed will get us to the finals better than a tired old team.

Our core is veteran. They can beat the primadonna’s team on the road in the playoffs. Focus on getting healthy.

by iowa plowboy on Feb 10, 2009 8:13 PM EST reply actions

This team has yet to win in cleveland and homecourt is still in sight, why not try and get it?

by TheAncientRivalry on Feb 10, 2009 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

i think doc

is doing just that – my concern is that the bench is playing as a unit – but in the playoffs we’ll see one or two bench players at a time, not 4

by Brendan on Feb 10, 2009 10:06 PM EST up reply actions

2nd Half

Too bad for TA. Like his evil twin Delonte, he can’t seem to stay healthy. Hope he can recover in time for the stretch. He still hasn’t developed into a consistent player or had regular minutes. I don’t know what he can offer the Celts at this point.

I’d bet Posey now wishes he took a 2 yr deal with Boston & TA wishes he took the money in OK.

by LuckyNumber07 on Feb 10, 2009 9:40 PM EST reply actions

not good

Guys who is going to help guard Kobe and Lebron? or even Joe Johnson? Last year we had Posey and Pierce to throw at these guys. We have NO one beyond Pierce who can guard these guys other then TA.

This is just not good….Pierce will be worn out by the time (if) we get to the finals.

by CelticfaninArk on Feb 10, 2009 11:02 PM EST reply actions

not bad actually

we all have seen what he is (not) capable of in contributing to this team

so why not give more minutes to gabe and bill walker in the regular season games?

by hiro on Feb 11, 2009 8:06 AM EST reply actions

I think the majority of people here bashing TA have never picked up or played basketball in their life. The skys the limit for Tony’s potential, this kid has so much raw athletic ability its scary. What do you guys think you know that Doc dosent? It’s what you dont know that Doc and DA do…if this kid went back to avging over 20 pts a game again everyone would shut their mouths but theres not room for another huge scorer on this team thats what the big 3 is for. Tony’s main problem is self afflicted; confidence and knowing his role…Do you think Doc rivers would continue to play someone who is not a quality player? NO TA is just under achieving and needs playing time to get back to where he was pre-injury. Why do you think TA is one of the most liked and respected guys in the locker room; he plays with heart nd alot of it. The kid needs time to develop he was playing allstar bball prior to his injury, sat out a year, rehabed it half a year to come back to a team that didnt need him. This is his first year really back from his extremely serious injury to really get the feel of things again. Give the kid time he’s gonna shock everyone…other than DOC, DA, and the BIG 3 and me…they know what hes capable of. This is the world champions were talking about there not gonna try and devlop TA for no reason if he was trash.

by alevras on Feb 11, 2009 2:07 PM EST reply actions

Ainge and Doc love Tony Allen so much

that they were willing to let him walk last off-season.

I agree TA is not exactly trash, but the idea that his 20 games pre-knee injury represent his true value is becoming really, really old. The sky is the limit?
