Ainge confirms Cassell trade

Marc Spears reports:

"Celtics president Danny Ainge confirmed that guard Sam Cassell has been dealt to the Sacramento Kings for a protected second-round pick.

The move allows the Celtics to have one available spot now on their 15-man roster, which could be helpful in a trade or in signing a free agent. The trade deadline is Thursday.

According to a source, the Kings are expected to waive Cassell and a team needing a veteran point guard may claim him off waivers."

As the deal stands now...

Assuming Boston is paying Sacramento $500k:

1) Sacramento receives a little more than $200k, even after paying Cassell his remaining salary;

2) Boston saves approximately $589k in salary and luxury tax, after paying Sacramento;

3) Boston gets an open roster slot, and potentially a second rounder (although it’s heavily protected).

Why shouldn’t Sacramento ownership be happy with a deal that saves them a little over $200k? That pays a couple of office salaries for them, at the very least.

(Free money in the sense that the report is the Celts probably will never see the Sacramento pick.)

Cost of Doing the Deal

Well, you have to pay someone to do the paper work. If that person is a lawyer, how much do they charge? The deal isn’t free.

Just seems like a pittance.

I’m sure there is an expectation of future accommodating behavior . . . or there is more to it.

I get it, but it's so stupid

I really can’t stand that pro sports has evolved to the level that these sort of trades are commonplace. Give me a good old “talent for talent” trade.

Trading for purely space where neither team has any intention of playing the player (s) involved is a reality of the way things run now, but I find it annoying nonetheless.

I’m not sure I was saying the paper work cost $200k. But once you factor in the fact that outside of 200k the Kings are getting zip, the benefit amounts to less than 200k, an amount hardly worth doing the deal, IMO, unless, of course, the Kings are in need of stimulus type bailout.

Cassell comes in the final year of his deal worth $1.2 million, and the cash coming the Kings’ way is expected to be in the neighborhood of $500,000. That would just about cover Cassell’s remaining wages for the rest of the season, and so the question then becomes whether the Kings – who have a roster spot available for Cassell – would bother to do this for the mere chance to have a respected veteran presence on board.

Cassell could wind up being waived before he gets here or playing a part in something bigger the Kings have been working on trade-wise. On the surface, it makes no sense why the Kings would simply do the Celtics a favor to help with their championship run. I’m leaning toward the more to come category.

The Sacramento Bee is wrong. The Celtics are paying Cassell $797,000 this season (the NBA subsidizes the rest) and the Kings are picking up a pro-rated share of that. The Kings are making a decent amount of cash here, for basically nothing. Even though the Maloofs are filthy rich, they still will take a couple hundred thousand dollars when offered for free.

… you should try reading the Collective Bargaining Agreement before you start criticizing others.

If the Kings are “bringing home” between $345k and $400k, that means that the Celtics are chipping in more than the $500k that was originally reported.

Danny's Done It Again

It’s more than likely that Sam would never have seen any playing time this season or post season. So Danny makes this move and we are now looking into his motives as the media must also be. The plus side of the trade for the C’s is that Danny can get some peace and quite so he can concentrate on what he thinks he can do to make the team better. It also means that Scals will need another one on one partner.
