Marbury Says He's Boston Bound

From the NYTimes

The Stephon Marbury era in Boston will begin Friday morning when Marbury, the former Knicks point guard, officially signs with the Boston Celtics.

"The great thing is that they want me to play with them," Marbury said at his home in Purchase, N.Y. He added that he had already met with some of his new teammates.

Marbury is scheduled to meet with reporters in Boston on Friday morning and be in uniform Friday night when the Celtics host the Indiana Pacers. Asked about his role with the Celtics, presumably to back up guard Rajon Rondo, Marbury said, "I'll just let my game speak for itself."

Why does this not make me feel better?

Give him a chance...

Innocent until proven guilty. Maybe he is going to let his game tell everyone that he CAN be a team player. I hope so, anyway.

Perk and Powe... the Next Big Thing

I agree

There’s been a lot of great Celtics that have been cancers elsewhere. He doesn’t need to be a great Celtic, just a serviceable bench player. Is there a better option out there right now? The 2nd unit needs an experienced ball handler and another scorer. EH is a better fit off the ball, to take advantage of his spot up, deep shooting threat. Gabe is too inexperienced for the playoffs to rely upon. TA may not even be available due to injury.

When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"

quote

I am on record as being for the Marbury signing. (low risk/high reward type thing). But his quote in this article already scares me. When asked about being a back up to Rondo, he answered “I’ll let my game speak for itself”. that is scary. This to me means he thinks his game is still All-Star level, and he has this idea in his head that he’s going to come in, play his game, and he’ll be so good that we HAVE to play him more than Rondo. NOT the attitude I wanted to see coming from Steph, especially this early.

by wil on Feb 26, 2009 2:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

my thoughts exactly

I too am for the Marbury signing, but your words are exactly my words. I’m OK with him saying stupid things and generally being a knucklehead (but not a cancer) off the court as long as he has his head on straight while on the court.

No - this is a classic psychological trick of the mind...

…where you fear one outcome and then subconsciously look for confirmation in everything that you see, read, and hear….

This could just as likely be Marbury’s short wrap-up answering all doubts by saying " i’ll let my game speak for itself" implying that the QUESTION of how he feels about backing up Rondo will be answered through his play.

The only thing making that statement imply he is expecting his game to prove he should start, etc is inside peoples heads

by BillfromBoston on Feb 26, 2009 4:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No - It was a Stupid Comment

It’s not about his Game

His Game has nothing to do with anything. No one cares about his Game.

It’s about the Celtics. it’s about winning. It’s about his teammates. It’s about playing the role the team needs.

I think words are a good indicator of attitude, and attitude determines likely performance: his expectations versus the team’s expectations. If there’s a mismatch, it will be a big negative.

It’s important that people not gloss over differences in expectations by just agreeing to get along. Before he signs with the Celtics, I hope someone has sat down with him and clarified exactly what the Celtics want him to do. And I hope he nodded his head and said “Yes, sir. Mr. Ainge. That’s exactly what I intend to do. I will do whatever Coach Rivers asks and help the team win.”

If that conversation didn’t happen, I wouldn’t sign the guy. I wouldn’t hire a guy for the mailroom without a high level of confidence that expectations were in alignment, much less bring a guy into a well-oiled machine like the Celtics locker room.

There’s no room for ambiguity. The guy needs to walk and talk the company line from the get go.

by KJR on Feb 26, 2009 5:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

of course words are an indicator of things..

…but you guys are creating what those words mean — if he had been answering questions left and right and then gave a brief, coy answer in response to the Rondo question THAT would be an indicator of a hidden agenda.

But Marbury made one response to all inquiries – “ill let my game do the talking.” That is only a statement reflecting a stance that he’s not answering any questions and he’s going to let people make their own determinations by virtue of his performance – that is just as plausible as the jump-to-conclusions scenario everyone is trying to create.

Tomorrow at his actual press conference he will answer all the pertinent questions with the responses that should ease people’s concerns – though he’ll remain the target of all media scruitny and everything he says and does will be just like this comment – dissected and searched for malicious meaning…

…this is a figment of people’s imaginations…

Come on people!

Stephon Marbury! This team is just out of control. Stephon Marbury has some serious skills, it’s well, Stephon Marbury. And like Garnett and Pierce (and Perk) he is a scary guy, scarier when he has the ball. He is faster and more talented than sam was last year. This could be a serious upgrade? Is everyone just waiting to see it work before they get all excited? I don’t get it. Rondo is on the superstar road fast, who knows, maybe he will learn from Marbury and get that much better.

marbury's mouth hasn't met marbury's brain yet

but imho, a month of immersion in Boston’s team atmosphere and articulated system of defense oriented basketball will forge that momentous event—when marbury realizes its fun to just compete WITH the team, to win, and his brain and mouth will sync up.
Baited breath…

As I've said before

I don’t doubt Marbury’s willingness to prove his critics wrong, I just hope that he wants to prove them that he can be a team player, not that he can still ‘ball’.

With that quote, I can see him refusing to come off the court at some point.

It should be in the contract that Marbury must go on the show ‘from G’s to Gents’ in order to play in Boston.

I’ll be glad when all of the speculation is over and this guy has had some time on the floor to show us what’s what. I’m nervous, sure, but I’m also kind of excited, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t.. And as far as his cryptic comments go, if he competes for minutes by playing solid ball at both ends of the floor and by playing within the system, well then more power to him.

yeah get sam back

I liked sam, maybe he will come back. I hope Marbury tries to show up Rondo… Has anyone else noticed that Rondo usually (except for a few few times) outplays star point guards this year? Like tripple double or 25 points or 18 assists out plays them? I think that Rondo is going to get better having to defend Marbury in practice (if he shows up). I think that Marbury is explosive off the dribble and this is going to be a great addition, Eddie is great, but he just isn’t very good at point guard.

I agree that one positive unintended consequence might be Rajon going all world on everyone. I have the feeling the kid is a born killer like Bird was and the challenge might cause him to raise his game even higher. I worry just a little he might start shooting from the outside more than he should though. We’ll see

Lethal weapon 4

I saw some one post that someone said that they think marbury would be starting later on in the season before the playoffs. Rondo has played good but I think this is true as well that Marbury could take the starting spot over before the playoffs if he learns to play with in the team and is in shape big if there considering he has sat out most of the season. I also have to say that GPA+ Marbury could be a very dangerous force if it did work out that they started Marbury later on. If it does turn out that he starts with he big 3 and we end up bringing home #18 because of it I say we call them Lethal weapon 4.

Exactly...

…he’s basically been on the defensive against the NY media the last 4 years – he is trying to prove that he has value – Boston media and fans are going to be waiting around every corner to take whatever he says and find negativity in it…

…think about how hard it would be for you to function in an environment where everyone was hunting for ammunition to assassinate your character…

The guy has brought things on himself, but the momentum created from it has reached extreme levels…

How can he succeed if everyone is just looking for ways for him to fail? I trust the team personnel will be more objective in their interactions with him…

Dead on

I think it is encouraging that Marbury has ceded speaking to his game. Perhaps that means he’ll remain quiet. ; )

You're being coy, Jeff

It’s no secret what his role is suppose to be. He is implying that his game will dicatate a larger role than what we all have in mind.

I called this yesterday, it won’t be long before the Star decides his 15mpg isn’t enough. He hasn’t even played yet and he is already looking outside his role and having illusions of grandeur.

I give it one week before he makes a comment about out playing or playing in front of Rondo. Just wait. Hopefully Sam I am is still unemployed when the Starchild crashes and burns… again.

I think people here are just WAITING for a blow-up. To pick on one sentence and to over assume what it means is pathetic. Give the guy a chance! it was a stupid comment

when asked about his role on the team, his response should have been some variation of:

I’m going to do whatever they ask me to do to help win a championship. I’m all about winning and helping make the team better in any way I can. I’ll talk to the coaches and players, and blend in to this great team, and give it my very best effort. This is a fantastic opportunity, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to go to Boston. I want to be the best teammate I can be.

Instead, he immediately made the statement of his “role” about himself. As if the only thing that matters is “his game”, his talent level. It’s not about “his game.” Someone needs to take this joker aside and get him straight.

He’ll be making his statements tomorrow – he made a brief and dismissive comment regarding allowing his play to dictate others opinions…considering the QUESTION was about Marbury, answering the question within the context of himself isn’t some type of ego trip – its pretty normal…

Woah, people are taking that statement way too negatively. How do we even know what the interviewer asked? It’s all spin. The interviewer probably didn’t ask “What do you think about playing behind Rondo?” If Marbury replied with, I’ll let my game speak for myself, it is kind of bad to say that…but all the interviewer probably asked was “what do you think of your role?”. Marbury’s answer isn’t bad at all. He gave a good answer. Don’t talk the talk if you can’t walk the walk which is what Marbury is basically saying.

No problem with ambition

Hey if the guy thinks he can outplay and outwork Rondo, let him try. That can only help the team and Rajon. I have no problem whatsoever with ambitious players. If he proves to be nothing more than a knucklehead, KG will throw him out the door himself. No problem with that either.

Win or lose this is going to be great

Really, the theater of this will be just terrific. The interviews, the games, the on-court events, the techs on Doc, the heroes and goats… everything. Clearly, winning it all would be absolutely terrific and amazing. But even if we don’t, this one addition is going to make the rest of this season uniquely memorable… just to see what happens between SM and KG, and PP, Rajon, Ray, Eddie, Baby, even Mikki… what a cast of characters! I think there will be drama and comedy galore. Pure entertainment… guaranteed from now to the end.

People are overreacting here. He just said that his play will determine his role. To me it seems as if he is just willing to shut up and play and wasn’t this what everybody wanted??? So let the guy play and show what he can do. I see nothing negative here.

Gosh, he is still not a Celtic and people are already criticising him…

You’d all like to believe that this will work. The idiots on WEEI have been touting the move, calling it “low risk” because if Marbury doesn’t behave you just cut him.

Actually the cost is high. First there’s the opportunity cost: Ainge could have used the roster spot on someone else. Or make a trade for an experienced backup guard at the deadline.

Or they could have used the minutes to develop Pruitt.

But the biggest cost will be the championship, because I have no doubt that Marbury’s game will indeed speak for itself. Oh, he’ll get his numbers and some idiot GM will sign him next year for more than he’s worth. It’s the Celtics who will be the losers.

by Brickowski on Feb 26, 2009 5:01 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Cs at the center

Thinking about this move… Danny just put the Cs in the center of the NBA universe. The media will be ALL OVER this story, from now to the end. It’ll be hilarious, dramatic, emotional, disgusting and thrilling. This move guarantees maximum fan attention for the Celtics this year… which is probably going to be the toughest year (financially) in the history of the Celtics, maybe of the century. From that pov, the Celtics will come out ahead regardless of what happens on the floor.

Looking forward to it.

Media attention is not desirable? Cs are ALREADY the center of the NBA universe?? Media attention does not translate into profits? You gotta be kidding. Ask Wyc about all this. The NBA just borrowed $175 million. Teams are losing money out there. Look around just in this thread and you will see guys excited to see the next game, and all the games… just to see how this soap opera play out. OF COURSE this will help them. More viewers, higher sales, better TV contracts, more advertising, etc. etc. For a pittance (what is Marbury costing, about $380k?) they will get invaluable publicity and public interest. I know I can’t wait to see what happens next. Multiply that by a few million.

by DRJ1 on Feb 27, 2009 12:35 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

We'll see about that...

…what if Marbury is fantastic, leads the 2nd unit offensively and plays quality team ball with the first unit and they STILL lose becaue Cleveland or LAL is better than them?

Does that make it his fault?

by BillfromBoston on Feb 26, 2009 8:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Every game is already sold out. How will the Celtics profit from the media attention? Will their advertising rates and fill go up?

It certainly won’t make up for the revenue they lose by making an early exit from the playoffs.

fakers are scared now

by Champzilla on Feb 26, 2009 5:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

LOL. No Chance. Cleveland isn’t frightened either.

by Brickowski on Feb 26, 2009 5:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe they should be.

The cavs seem to think that the addition of mo williams, gives them the edge over the celtics,if the two teams meet in the playoffs. If marbury can play at the same level he was at during the preseason for the knicks,he is a vastly superior talent to mo.

by hrtland on Feb 26, 2009 8:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Definitely not.

It’s quality size that you need against the Lakers. Not another guard.

by wondahbap on Feb 26, 2009 9:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Defintely so.

The celtics should pick from the large pool of quality big men that are currently available? It appears that marbury may be the best player available .

by hrtland on Feb 26, 2009 10:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

im so scared

Marbury could torpedo everything. It’s a freeroll until it isn’t , when the stakes are highest.

What can Rondo learn from Marbury? How to be selfish? How NOT to win? How to

be a turd in the locker room? How to look for his own shot first and pass only as a last resort? How to stop making an effort when his team falls behind? How to let his ego supersede the needs of the team? How to complain about playing time and offensive schemes? How to act so bizarrely off the court that it becomes a burden to his teammates?

I’m ok with this experiment. I think the team has a strong enough coach and players to put it aside if it goes wrong. BUT, anyone who believes Marbury will be a good mentor for Rondo either hasn’t followed Marbury’s career, or seen him play, or simply doesn’t understand that basketball is showing what you can do, not talking about it.

That’s the nicest way I can put it.

by Cousin It on Feb 26, 2009 7:37 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It should be what can #30 learn from Rondo?

If the Cowboys could only play like a team with passion and unity like my beloved
Boston Celtics, I would be happy.

Optimistic, but still unsure about the signing....However..

Two things for sure.

1. I’d definately pay much more money than a game ticket to see the first couple practices. Rondo vs Marbury. Competition can only make them better, and i have a feeling an ego will be checked early by rondo and Big 3.

2. A successful starbury gamble just helps us keep the price we gonna have to pay rondo next year to keep him in check. Not that it wont be a lot anyways, but maybe a bit less.

Either way, with the limited risk, its a good gamble.

Please Doc, don't play him!

Just let him rot at the end of the bench and follow this simple rule:

4th quarter, less than 5 minutes to play, up by 25 or more, Stephon gets to play

And a message to the Boston media: please do not feed this guy’s ego even more. Don’t bother interviewing him. Please

People, Take It Easy

I can tell you that Marbury will in no way have any effect on Rondo. The only impact he could have on Rondo is that it might not be necessary to play Rondo with the second unit. He’s young, but he takes a beating and needs the extra rest. Come playoffs, without Marbury, we will need Rondo playing alot more with the second unit.

Don't Listen

Maybe the best thing to do to survive pre-Marbury is to not listen to anything he says and to not read anything the media says. The Boston Sports guys associated with Comcast Sports Net all seem to be on board. Felger is skeptical and Tommy sort of smiles with a let’s wait and see atitude.

Over/Under

What’s the early over/under line on the number of shots Stephon puts up per minute played?

5?

by Bird to DJ on Feb 26, 2009 7:52 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I'd say...

Less than Sam and more than pruitt. I’m hoping for JUUUUSTTT RIIIIGGHHHT.

Doc should give him this easy equation.

For every steal, rebound, or assist you get stephon, your allowed a shot.

2 steals, 3 rebounds, 5 assists = 10 shots. I’m ok with that then.

it feels like we scored that hot girl in the bar….let hope she lives up to the hype.
good luck to Steph & the Celtics in this stretch run.

It's not what effect Starbury will have on Rondo...

… so much as what effect the leaders, KG in particular, will have on Starbury. As much as I detest this trade, and wish there was a better option pursued, you have to hope that the sheer force of an entire team hooked on Ubuntu having SOME kind of influence on Starbury.
Right?
OK, maybe not. But it could be fun to watch them put him in his place.
Again, I think the move is mistake, but there is an intriguing upside — like, a second unit that has serious firepower.
Should be fun to watch.

billfromboston, i like your attitude about marbury and boy, do i hope you’re right-pass the koolaid. we might go bust but at least we have a controversy to roil our emotions-never a dull moment, except for our clippers performance.

I was already relatively certain that the apocalypse was upon us, with the signing of Marbury.

And now, given the posters on this thread who I agree with – that Marbury’s statement means absolutely nothing – I am certain of it.

said that he wouldn’t want a character like Marbury on his team. He will be eating those words in game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Have you seen this? Marbury saying bye to NY, hello to Boston

And so the soap opera begins…. Whether it’s dramatic theater, comedy, or theater of the absurd (or all three), ya gotta LOVE it.
