Big Al: Torn ACL - Done For Year

Bad, bad news for our old friend.  StarTribune

Al Jefferson, the Timberwolves' best player, will likely miss the rest of the season with a torn knee ligament. He suffered the injury Sunday night in New Orleans near the end of the Wolves' 101-97 loss to the Hornets.

Hat tip to Matt Moore for sending me the link.

That sucks. That really, really sucks. Best wishes to Big Al for a full and speedy recovery. He’s finally been starting to get the publicity he deserves, and the Wolves seemed to be improving before our very eyes. If Big Al can come back 100% next year and they can improve the PG spot, they could be a team to make some noise next year.

I agree. The Wolves are an All Star guard away from being a playoff team, McHale has put together a nice supporting cast – they just need another big piece. Big AL is legit.

Bummer

Get well soon Big AL. Hopefully he doesn’t have the same recovery issues he did with that ankle. This time around, he should know to take his time and gain a full recovery.

by D Dub on Feb 9, 2009 2:57 PM EST reply actions

Oh no.

What a bummer of Al.

When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"

big al…we wish u a quick recovery

by tommyfan on Feb 9, 2009 3:04 PM EST reply actions

i knew it as soon as i saw it

I saw it on Sportscenter last night and knew instantly it was a torn ACL. You don’t see knees buckle like that often and just walk away. What a shame, he was playing some excellent ball.

too bad

Thats lousy….best wishes Al…take it easy

I better say this before CB member "Slick" does:

The Babble jinx continues…

Manuel Aristides Ramirez is the greatest hitter I've ever seen.

Oh man.

I’m speechless.
Big Al: get well soon
SW: this is starting to get weird.

never mention Oden in a Babble

I’m begging you. I can’t take that kind of pain.

The power of babble...

I’d like to see a babble on Kobe

Terrible...

Big Al was working too hard and playing too well to have something like this happen…

horrible news

Hope he makes a speedy recovery. he was starting to get the recognition he deserved.

Get well soon Big Al

Real bad news. Back to worrying about ping pong balls if your a Wolves fan :-(

by Toine43 on Feb 9, 2009 3:26 PM EST reply actions

well...

Maybe it’ll prove to be for the best. I’m not up to speed on the top PG prospects, but if they end up with a top-5 pick or so and can draft someone who’ll make an impact… I mean, they’re already showing a lot of improvement with Sea-bass running the aquad.

by theBird on Feb 9, 2009 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

He’ll be fine. He’s going to evolve in the next 2-3 years to be the best low post scorer in the NBA

Reporter: About a year ago I asked about the Celtics-Lakers thing and you said you'd really only seen it on TV. Now you've been through it, can you talk about playing the Boston Celtics for the NBA championship?
Kobe: It Sucks.

by Tom Bellinger on Feb 9, 2009 3:33 PM EST reply actions

he might have been

the best low post scorer in the NBA already

I can’t think of anyone who’s better at scoring down low right now. Maybe Shaq, but that’s just because he’s such a brute force. Big Al’s downright McHale-esque at times, and I’m not sure there’s a big man with better hands in the game. If he can learn how to play D, he’s not just All-Star, he’s got the potential to be All-NBA. I’ll never regret the KG trade, but I fully expect there to be a time when we all have more than a twinge of regret when we see what kind of player Big Al fully develops into.

by theBird on Feb 9, 2009 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

Easily the best traditional back to the basket player in the league

Other than Shaq on a good night, there’s no one better than Jefferson.

Vinny Del Negro interviewed for the job today. I mean come on! Nobody else thinks this is nuts?

he is the most unstoppable offensive force in the league, imho.

The other contenders can’t sustain a 50% all year long on all their touches.

In any case, I can’t believe that was an acl injury. I was watching the game and it didn’t look like one to me at all, unlike some other posters. I feel terrible For him and Kevin

by wahz on Feb 9, 2009 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

More unstoppable than Lebron?!

I agree he is tough to defend, and up in the top 15-20 players already, but tougher than Lebron, or Kobe even?!

by EJPLAYA on Feb 9, 2009 7:45 PM EST up reply actions

No Fair!

That’s really too bad. He was the only thing that team had going for it. Tough times in Minnesota. Reminds me of TA’s injury during 2006-2007.

by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Feb 9, 2009 3:44 PM EST reply actions

The difference is that Big Al was injured actually trying to make a play.

by Finkelskyhook on Feb 9, 2009 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

Ouch

Big Al just had a moster game too, maybe this will give the TWolves a very high lottery pick.

by Champzilla on Feb 9, 2009 4:17 PM EST reply actions

I wondered if they would try to find a center (Thabeet?) with one of their draft picks to let Al play the 4. This probably locks Al at the 5 when he comes back. He’s not that quick to begin with.

Good luck Al.

by Finkelskyhook on Feb 9, 2009 4:44 PM EST reply actions

If Big Al’s at the 4, where’s Love going to play? Big Al’s getting virtually all of his minutes at the 5, and Love’s been splitting between the 4 and the 5. Since he’s really coming on as of late, you figure you’ve got your starting C and PF. They probably use more depth, but who couldn’t? The one spot that they really NEED to improve is the point, and if there isn’t a PG worth a high pick when they’re drafting, an impact wing to play alongside Roy.

by theBird on Feb 9, 2009 4:54 PM EST up reply actions

my heart is broken. big al is young enough to heal relatively quickly and he will. the wolves will get a good pick and will get better- next year.

by nazzbo on Feb 9, 2009 5:07 PM EST reply actions

Sorry to hear both for Al and Celtics West. Here’s to a swift and thorough recovery.

by Brendan on Feb 9, 2009 5:39 PM EST reply actions

Sad news. The NBA is poorer for the loss.

by Brickowski on Feb 9, 2009 6:42 PM EST reply actions

Too bad for Al!

I wonder if this affects Kevin McHale’s status for next year. Any thoughts?

by VtCeltics on Feb 9, 2009 8:14 PM EST reply actions

So sorry to hear this. I still love Big Al and am very sad about this news. He is a good kid and can’t seem to catch a break. Hopefully he will heal quickly and will be stronger because of the experience. He needs to get on the phone with Leon for encouragement.

Perk and Powe... the Next Big Thing

by FLCeltsFan on Feb 9, 2009 8:20 PM EST reply actions

One of ours

I think many Twolves fans would be suprised by the fact that, we still consider AJ family..but we do…simply sad…sure hope he makes a full recovery…

by Fastbreak1 on Feb 9, 2009 8:44 PM EST reply actions

Make use of the time...

Hope he makes a full recovery.
If he spends his time studying NBA defense and elite big men like Duncan and Garnett, he’ll be unstoppable.

by LuckyNumber07 on Feb 9, 2009 8:52 PM EST reply actions

Thanks for all the kind words guys

us wolves fans could use them right now…boy the rest of this season is going to be a long one.
