Extra Truthiness

The Big 3 was down to 1 tonight, but without Wade, that was just enough to win in overtime.  (Major hat tip to Rondo's performance as well)

Did not see the game, but.....

I’ll take 6 assists and one turnover from my “backup” point guard every day of the week. Of course, there are those here who want to see him fail, which in turn would bring down the Celtics, but I am not one of those people. The C’s won, but some need to find something (the same thing) to complain about day after day after day.

What did y’all think of Marbury’s game tonight?

by C's09Champs on Mar 18, 2009 10:11 PM EDT reply actions

Not much defensively, frankly.

by CoachBo on Mar 18, 2009 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he'll always struggle against 2s

But then again I’ll take a relatively efficient offensive performance at this point off the bench. He has to find his shot though. Until he can make jumpers or finish in traffic better he won’t be useful in the playoffs.

What, Faf, you don't think we can bank on the over-the-head flip hitting at a high rate?

Thought He Did Well

I thought Marbury played very well on defense. He sure worked hard on that end. Also, he is a terrific passer.

by TrueGreen on Mar 19, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

But Marbury he made a shot.! It was a no look, over-the-head faith heave, but hey, be thankful for small favors.
Marbury has also figured out that the way to improve his assist totals is to pass the ball to Pierce and watch Paul shoot jumpers. That’s progress, I suppose.

by Brickowski on Mar 18, 2009 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

6 Assists

Marbury had 6 assists. Not bad for a “selfish” player. It seems he and Rondo are going thru a role change. Rondo becomes the scorer and Marbury the pass-first guy. As much as I didn’t want Marbury before he came here, I’m sure glad he’s here now. There’s going to be a game or two in the playoffs where Marbury gets us a win. That’s all we need from him. He’ll also be better when KG returns.

I think his shot will appear

but right now Steph is just trying to impress (his teammates by being selfless) and improve enough to have confidence. I couldn’t be happier with his demeanor or his effort, which is really all we were asking for. Over the next few weeks, the shot will appear….

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Great game by both teams but thank God, PP showed up big time….. We really needed this win. Losing to Heat without Wade it would be embarrassing. I can’t wait for KG to get back…. I don’t think we even understand how much the team misses him on the floor….. We need his energy NOW!!!!!!

by marcinjp9 on Mar 18, 2009 10:12 PM EDT reply actions

Really glad for the win

but watching this team grind it out missing 1/2 its rotation makes me really sad sometimes. We have a tough couple of games coming up, hope maybe Ray and KG will be back.

Still, epic performance by the Captain and another great game for R2. Loved the teamwork between him and Steph in the 1st.

Good to get the W, but I no longer think its crucial…to win the championship we’re already potentially have to go through cleveland and LA, why not start in orlando?

Cant take a whole lot from this win, because they couldve easily lost at home to the heat without dwyane wade

Thanks C's!

Got the win by buckling down in OT. Bigtime props to our iron men, Paul, Baby and Perk. That’s a lot of minutes to be hauling themselves up and down the court. Baby 41 minutes? Wow.

by Thruthelookingglass on Mar 18, 2009 10:24 PM EDT reply actions

good win and great clutch game by pierce but can someone tell me why rondo keeps playing his man from behind and letting him get to the rim repeatedly? is this really ‘great defense"? why not keep the man in front of you? it makes me nuts and then everyone says what a great defensive playe rhe is—- I just don’t see it

by Red2 on Mar 18, 2009 10:35 PM EDT reply actions

Rondo defense

I think it has something to do with the Celtics defensive philosophy; rather than play him face up, he’s funneling him a certain way, towards a big man. Thats why you see him pointing and talking to the big man behind him all the time.

by misterx2day on Mar 18, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course, Celtics most of the time do not play just one on one defense… everyone helps everyone….. Rodon is super quick and he does get a lot of steals but poking the ball from the back…. when KG gets back watch the intensity on defense pick up. Perk is playing great of late and I think it would be even easier for him with KG on the court. Just can’t wait

by marcinjp9 on Mar 18, 2009 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Rondo Is Continually Getting Run Into Picks

I would like to see Rondo do a better job of staying in front of his man. This has been a continual problem. It also puts alot of pressure on our bigs to back him up. But, if you look at it as a team it seems to work.

"I don't come to play, I come to WIN"--Larry Bird

by TrueGreen on Mar 19, 2009 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Once again...

Its not like Rondo has decided that he’s going to play his man one way or the other… Its the Celtics team defense. When an opponent is on a certain spot on the floor, you can clearly see Rondo pointing for a big man and then Rondo going to one side of the offfensive player to funnel his opponent towards that big man. If Doc and Thibs didn’t want Rondo to do that, they would tell him, but I’m pretty sure its part of the defensive strategy. Make the offensive player go where you want him to go, not the other way around.

by misterx2day on Mar 19, 2009 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Why?

And why isn’t Rondo getting props for putting up another bigtime double-double? He played 47 minutes and he’s definitely playing injured. The national media hate on him enough (see Jeff Van Gundy), we don’t need to overlook all the great things he does here too.

by misterx2day on Mar 18, 2009 10:42 PM EDT reply actions

I hate Van Gundys…… Payton is a hater too… loved him as a player but now he’s making an idiot out of, just cuz the Celtics kept R2 and not him……lol…… great move Danny

I Had The Misfortune

I had to listen to Mike and Tommy. I didn’t know the game was on ESPN till the end when I noticed some ESPN T-shirts on their workers. I hate to miss Van Gundy. Just to make sure, this is “tongue in cheek”. I can’t stand to watch a C game when Mike and Tommy aren’t doing the play by play. Those of us who have the privilege of listening to these two are sure lucky.

Tongue-in-cheek or otherwise, you'd have missed JVG anyway, TrueGreen...

…since he unfortunately didn’t do the game.

That said, since I was stuck on ESPN – I’d have loved to have him and Breen rather than Dave Pasch and Jon Barry along with Jackson. They weren’t awful, but I really enjoy that first-team ESPN crew.

I got sick of the D-wade love fest

ok ok, he’s played great the last 3 weeks (well actually since the olympics) but do they have to talk about him the entire game!! He wasn’t even playing and he had more camera time than most of the players. You think they would talk about the vintage PP show he was putting on right in front of their faces or the fact that Rondo was dominating out there and that he was draining that elbow jumper (and was taking it…that a boy Rondo) with consistancy. It was driving me nuts. that was probably the most frustrating part of the evening…having to listen to them suck up to D-wade while he sat on the sidelines. I can handle Barry but Jackson was terrible last night (although Barry was the one stroking D-wade all night long).

this was a grinder. pp and rr the obvious, but thank goodness for eddie who really was clutch both sides of the ball. steph is still out of shape, but he’s nowhere near a cancer. he was a good pickup. mikki seems to try but he’s looked bad the last few games late and weak on the rotations and seemingly unnecessary fouls. is giddens alive?

And on the subject of plus-minus stats, Bill Walker had the worst in the game at -24. I hope Doc doesn’t see that, Bill will never play again.

by Atzar on Mar 19, 2009 1:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Yep, I caught that, too, looking at the box after the game,

not that I wasn’t expecting it to be bad, but wow – as you note, that was pretty rough.

Given Doc’s comments to Heather Cox after the third quarter (Loose paraphrasing: “Our starters played really well early. Our second unit screwed it up.”), hard to imagine he missed it. We’ll see what happens Friday and beyond for Bill.

Thanks for bringing that up, Atzar – meant to note it earlier as well.

It points up a developing storyline for this team, however: We aren’t very good defensively off the bench.

by CoachBo on Mar 19, 2009 8:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Playing out of Position

Is hurting Walker, I think. It’s not helping Marbury either, although I don’t think he’s ever going to be that good defensively (he’s giving an effort though which is either the scary or encouraging part).

by Berkcelt on Mar 19, 2009 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

This was a great win

Pretty evenly matched game, although we had 2 All-Stars out as well as 3 rotation players whereas they just had D-Wade out (and Mark Blount he he).

Pierce and Rondo led the way with plenty of support from the bench, which is currently a big part of the starting lineup :)

Looking ahead, there’s 2 games on the road starting in San Antonio tomorrow night and then Memphis the following night. If we get 1 win then we’ll finish this godforsaken week 2-3 and keep the number 2 seed intact hopefully. We have a good chance to win both games however.

After this week, there is only 1 more back-to-back set of games – April 14 in Philly and then April 15 in Boston against Washington (with a Gilbert Arenas cameo perhaps…?)

Once again, great win guys!

by Ruben Wolkowyski on Mar 19, 2009 3:00 AM EDT reply actions

I don't get the negativity

From this win, which was not only exciting (if a bit ugly) but gutsy. I mean, we’re banged up and thin, and we pull one out. This has to give SOME psychological lift for the team. I think Marbury played better, Big Baby played on pure guts and effort, and Pierce was just amazing. House had one of those games that shames me more not liking him (sorry). We’re gonna take some more lumps down the stretch, and we probably won’t be 100 percent for the playoffs, but last night was fun (at least for those of us who only get to see the Celtics on sorry old regular cable!).
Here’s to Bill Walker getting better.

by Big_Easy on Mar 19, 2009 7:36 AM EDT reply actions

Doc's coaching skills are more visible now with all the injuries

I think that since KG went down, and then one after another of the guys, Doc has had to do a masterful job not only rotating the players who are available that night, but also keeping the boys on message, on mission, and believing in that night’s win potential. The boys may not execute enough every night, but despite the tiredness, stretched thin at positions-ness, and newness of Marbury and Moore, every night the Celts are in position to win at the end of the game. That is great coaching during the highest level of adversity so far this year.

by jyrecelts on Mar 19, 2009 8:43 AM EDT reply actions

Let's Not Forget To Mention Perk

Perk played a great game last nite. He had one good block that was called a foul and his block on Beasley in overtime was fantastic. And that was with playing with 5 fouls. His scoring didn’t hurt either.

I think he actually had two blocks called foul, although on the first one he might have only altered the shot (i.e. no actual deflection).

The block on Beasley was huge

Great play. Thanks for bringing it up, TG.

Just curious, did you see Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio play? They weren’t bad hitters and I think they had to hit against better pitchers than Manny. But Manny is a great hitter.

But not too young to have seen wade Boggs in his prim, possibly even George Brett in his. Manny? not even close…

by jyrecelts on Mar 20, 2009 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

In the first quarter Perk had a beautiful block and got the ball to Marbury who drove for the lay-up, and he was being double-teamed so he UNSELFISHLY passed it to Rondo for the easy lay in. The next possession PP had a three. We had a strong first quarter.
