excuses

The “we are not at full strength” excuse needs to stop. It sounds a lot like the Lakers fans of last season. We are good enough to beat this and most teams with the guys out there at the end. Why didn’t we? Because we pass the ball like an undisciplined high school team in the half court sets. Make a simple pass instead of a specatular turnover and we would have had 5-6 more possesions in the 4th quarter alone. That has nothing to do with KG, Powe, or Scal being out.

by MurphyHOF on Mar 25, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Great win

Magic played their type of basketball for the majority of the game. Great inside game by Dwight and some solid outside shooting as well. Turk changed his game a bit by taking it to the hole. I’m sure that’s good to see as Magic fan.

The Magic had streamers when they beat us last year as well. It was a great win for them and would have been a great win for us. But this game showed that both these teams can battle. If these two teams meet in the playoffs, it’ll be fun to watch.

Here is my biased opinion. Stop reading if you don’t want to hear it – Wouldn’t it have been more interesting had KG been involved down the stretch? How bout in the 4th? Howard doesn’t have nearly as many rebounds with KG there and Turk isn’t taking it to the hole as much. I’d like to see that game and maybe we will see that game in the playoffs.

End note – the Magic are NOT a championship team this year. Not saying they won’t be in the future, but this is not their year. They were a few points (in total) away from being swept by the Celtics. I am still as confident as I was prior to this game – Celtics would win a 7 game series.

christ,

would you guys stop already? we were missing our all-star point guard in 3 out of the 4 games we played you. the first time the teams met the two starting backcourts were rondo/allen vs. johnson/redick.

so please, spare me.

Exactly

the turnover issue is exactly on the money. almost all of the losses this year could have been avoided by taking better care of the ball. A team with this much veteran leadership should not be making this many turnovers in a game.

Yes, But

The refs cost us at least the chance to win the game at the end with incredible non calls. They could call a foul for the Magics which put them up by one, but they couldn’t call very clear fouls on Howard, both on Pierce( one an illegal pick, one on Pierce’s last layup attempt).

by TrueGreen on Mar 26, 2009 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions

The refs

are not an argument or excuse anymore. They’re very, very bad. We understand that. I wouldn’t be surprised if they stopped making calls for the Celtics. I would also not be surprised if they made every call for the Celtics. They’re just that inconsistent and frustrating. It’s this way all around the league. I’ve said this the entire season, home court is important not for the crowd but for the refs. As shown last night, one call can make a win or loss difference. At the Garden, there’s a very good chance Pierce’s last drive is a foul. On the Magic’s home court it wasn’t. I’m not saying whethor or not I thought it was a foul, just commenting on how easily swayed the refs are during an emotional game.

by BOSPORTS on Mar 26, 2009 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

True but...

remember the last game against the magic in boston how Lewis got to the line with 30secs left on a cheap foul off the ball? A foul where he created the contact and then flailed his arms until he got the refs attention. How do they justify making that call in that situation and not making the call for PP when he clearly got hit on a lay up (not off the ball like Lewis) with seconds left? I understand the refs are terrible but I just don’t buy the ‘home court’ stuff. They consistantly make bad calls against the C’s at the most important times. How many games have we won by getting to the line or getting a call? I can’t seem to remember that many of them but I sure remember the ones we lost on a bad call or in this case a ‘good no-call’ as the stupid ESPN announcers called it.

That’s twice its gone to the wire with half a Celtics team for the Magic.

With the officials in the NBA? Also since Doc pissed off the criminals (a lot of NBA refs are convicted criminals), we will never get any calls.

Can we bring back Patrick O’Bryant for Mikki Moore? Where is the Glen Davis for all star vote now?

Nice run towards the end

This what they needed to do earlier, but guess they couldn’t have a answer for Howard. I would really liked a win in Orlando still, we could have won with KG playing more minutes. I wonder how long Doc will shorten them maybe till the playoffs?

What I take from this game is that I don’t even sweat the Magic. We come at them full strength and I don’t care whether they’ve got home court advantage or not. We take them out in 5, easily.

regular season lays the groudwork for the post season

If regular season games don’t count, then let’s just sit out the rest of the year and show up in the playoffs. The regular season games lay the groundwork for post season play. Very few teams in NBA history play significantly better in the post season after closing the season with such mediocrity. Yes, it has happened, especially the year after the first championship (LAL and Houston come to mind).

Yes, there were two horrible calls from the refs which significantly contributed to the outcome. However, 19 turnovers didn’t help either. RR is still playing hurt and walking up the court too often.

If we drop to 3rd seed come playoff time, we’ll have an uphill battle the whole way through. Yes, if we are healthy, we are incomparably the best. But healthy players still need enough games together to have rhythm during the playoffs.

Totally Disagree With You On This

You don’t take chances with KG. Also, I don’t think he’s in good enough game shape to play more minutes than he has been. Doc is doing exactly the right thing with KG.

well sure, they had other issues

like defending open threes. Rotations were late.
Plus Pierce did not have a good first half
Plus the starters squandered Garnett’s stint in the 3rd quarter. KG never got the ball.

BUT
Having said all of that, Marbury;‘s complete lack of production is debilitating. Look at his plus/minus. When he’s in there, it’s like the team is wearing leg weights..
Bring back Gabe Pruitt!!
And while we’re at it, let’s bring back Patrick O’Bryant too.

Lastly.. if I hear one more time drivel like “well, we just have to wait until Marbury gets his basketball legs..” one more time, I’ll throw up. Marbury is finished. He has no more basketball legs to get.

Guys on radio were going on tonight about KG being hurt again

Was listening in the third quarter and they were going on that KG couldn’t run, was dragging his leg, was grimacing and having a hard time getting up the court, and asking why Doc did not take him out. I do not know what to make of this, but just reporting what I heard.

I Agree...

Put KG back in for the last two minutes and I think he makes a huge difference. I call BS on the noncall when Pierce was fouled by Howard when going to the basket. If that had been Queen Jane or Bryant, instant foul call. The whistle would have been preblown just to let everyone know what was going down.

Should Doc run KG out there for the overtime, too?

At what point is it reasonable to draw the line on overextending a star player (and our best defender) in a late March game?

I’ve got about a zillion complaints about the Celtics’ play in this game. I’ve got zero about Doc’s handling of KG.

3 chances

Down by 2 with 3.8 seconds. They had 3 chances to run a play, and at least get fouled. They couldn’t even execute a decent play. Guaranteed: With KG in there the defense plays differently and increases the chance for an open shooter or an easy layup. Maybe they win. Maybe they don’t. But KG’s presence GUARANTEED changes the way the defense plays.

Orlando Had A Foul To Waste

The Magic had a foul to waste in the last two minutes and gave it. Orlando had many more fouls near the end that were not called. 2 were by Howard and I think Hedo should have been teched for his foul to give on Pierce. He hit Pierce in the face while bringing up his arm. Couldn’t see what happened on the last second shot.

KG not happy

He is not happy for two reasons: 1) he wanted to play but couldn’t get in and 2) the team lost another winnable game. But he was about half a step slower than before in help defense.
.
It is getting alarming: PP scored lots of points and the team still could not win — back to the old days? I hope not.

I was thinking the same thing, putting KG in for the last 2 minutes. I don’t see where I could have hurt. Maybe we could have won…..also I agree about Mikki. He makes some of the dumbest fouls I have ever seen in my life!!!

REFS

Alecquaid, you’re totally right. So many weird calls and lots of missed calls. Turkoglu held Pierce the whole fourth quarter but he was still too good, but not good enough. Marbury was pretty bad and KG should have been put in at the end. Even a little layup would send it into overtime and we had momentum going our way.

by PSYCHO T on Mar 25, 2009 10:49 PM EDT reply actions

I wonder how Magic fans felt

about Turkoglu being on the receiving end of third-degree assault going into the final media timeout…and the Magic getting the ball under the basket out of bounds rather than two foul shots. Or Baby having his heel in the restricted area on the charge he drew from Gortat.

There were missed calls, sure. But they went both ways. Seems worth noting.

5.) RR and BBD played an uncharacteristically poor game

3.) KG has only a few minutes
2.) We were sloppy with ball and refused to drive to the basket and settled for many jumpers
1.) PP took off the first half and part of the third quarter on offense. not sure why but lately he has seemed in low gear last 4 games.

Maybe, just maybe, he is the kind of players who need to play with an attitude in order to perform. All of a sudden, we are asking him to be a model citizen which he is not used to. He looked timid, tentative and out of place out there.

It was a fun game to watch. I also thought KG looked a little slow at times. He didn’t seem to have the fire in him that is typical for him. But whatever. Not that big of a deal. We didn’t play very well and still lost by two. I’ll settle for third in the east.

What I found interesting however was that Doc didn’t play Marbury in the second half, and Moore made the stupid foul on Lewis and was immediately removed from the game. Wow. That’s the kind of coaching he typically does with the younger players. So it makes me wonder what’s going on there. One game fluke? Is he getting frustrated with both Marbury and Moore?

by amenhotep04 on Mar 25, 2009 11:24 PM EDT reply actions

Marbury sucks

Marbury didn’t play the 2nd half: that’s one good move by Doc. Marbury has yet to contribute positively to the flow of the game. Maybe he should stay home and watch hundreds of hours of film. RR and BBD are still somewhat hurt, but for the most part they know where to expect to find their teammates.

Mikki Moore would be better used to come in and get 5 quick fouls against the opponents worst free throw shooter to try and disrupt their offense. Then he can sit down until the next game.

I really think Doc is strategically holding out for the playoffs. Whether or not that is a good move I don’t know. I really can’t assess this team yet because everything just seems to out of whack and then suddenly everything’s going smoothly. It’s possible that things will eventually click but I’m not sure. orlando beat us, fair and square, it was a big for them…and by the way the 2 times we beat them this sewason, they were injured and we werent

Our starting lineup is intact?

Garnett is still playing on a weak knee and is playing a little more than 15 minutes a game
Rondo has had an ankle sprain for about a month and sprained the other last night
Ray Allen hyperextended his right elbow a week ago

Two of our worst players are out with injru? — While I am no Scalabrine fan, he has been playing extremely effective basketball. Leon Powe has been playing like a beast and Tony Allen appeared to be getting his act together right before he got hurt.

Only think I can say for Orlando is that their starting point guard is out for the year.

Try this — Have Kobe only play 15 minute a game, give Derek Fisher two sprained ankles, and take two Laker bench players and put them on the injured list. How well would the Lakers do?

What happens with Home Court Advantage now?

It still depends on the number 2 seed, right?

If we end up with a better record than Orlando we won’t need the tiebreaker to determine home court advantage…?

The only issue is if we finish with the same record isn’t it?

give em time

just relax guys the celtics lost by 2 n the team best player played under 20 mins….once garnett is at full strengh the celtics will ok…..plus with marbury its going to take more time he isnt in game shape yet

If we finish with a better record than the Magic, we still have the home court advantage. However, don’t look ahead too far. There are still 3 more weeks in the regular season. After that they will have to get past the first round to play the Cs.

To me it says....

Goaltending. That ball is still on the rim yet the whistles remain at the refs side.

the refs did not cost us the game. there were plenty of noncalls that benefitted the c’s as well. in a low foul game, miiki picks up a fast 5- he stunk, stank, whatever, and marbury had glue on his feet. they missed powe big time. baby played very well and deserves a lot of credit. too much watching pp at the end and no ball movement and good d from orlando.

The Refs

I think they called a consistent game up till the end. They let both sides play, which is fine. Then they took the floor with Orlando at the end and cost us any chance of winning on very clear fouls that weren’t called.

Like the Turkoglu play or the Gortat charged referenced above?

Come on.

I Was Going To Stay Away From Here Today

The C’s played poorly last nite. The Magic probably played at their best. Still we had a chance to win, but the refs DENIED us that chance at the end of the game. They called a foul for one of the Magics and he made 1 of 2 to give them a 1 point lead. They didn’t call a foul on Howard for an illegal pick on Pierce and they didn’t call a foul on Howard when Pierce went to the basket right at the end. I didn’t see Pierce’s shot at the very end so I don’t know if he was fouled or not.

The Magic are trying to show how tough they are. The had a foul to give in the last two minutes and gave it on the C’s possession that started with about 6 sec on the clock. It was a hard foul, close to dirty, not tough, when all that was needed was for Turkeglu (?spell) to hold Pierce’s arm or shirt. But Hedo brought his arm up into Pierce’s face. They could have called a tech on that, but didn’t.

And what about the non call when Pierce got his defender in the air and shot while he was coming down into him.

In these types of games I usually say the C’s deserved to lose, but last nite they at least deserved the chance to win. “Criminally Negligent Officiating”

is this post serious?

how about that b.s. charge they called on gortat when perkins foot was CLEARLY on the restricted line?

or when turkoglu got raped going to the basket in the final minutes up 1, no call. and the ensuing possession where the ball was clearly tipped off the celts?

i have seen paul pierce get more garbage calls by flinging himself into people in late game situations than anyone in the league. didn’t happen last night- his shit got blocked, game over.

Yes, Very Serious
when turkoglu got raped going to the basket in the final minutes up 1, no call.

Yes, that was a foul, he didn’t get raped, but pushed or moved. And that was on the SAME play that Howard was NOT called for an illegal pick. The broadcasters I was listening to assumed the non call on Turkolu was to pay off for the non call on Howard. If the correct call was called on Howard the play would have and should have been over and the foul on Turkoglu would never have happened. If you want to talk about “rape” then talk about the holding and grabbing of Pierce by Turkoglu all game or that last foul to give is a pretty good example.

As to the ball going out of bounds, it was not “clearly tipped off the celts”. I didn’t see it well. If the refs were unsure they should have called a jump ball, so I guess the refs were sure.

The game was called fine up to the last two or three minutes. Then it was clearly anti-Celtic.

And as to Paul Pierce “flinging himself into people…” that is what you’re supposed to do. You take it to the basket and hope to score or get fouled. If you’re talking about the one that wasn’t called for Pierce earlier—many players have the skill to do it. Pierce did it last year in the playoffs and hit a three. He got one foul shot. The player that was victimized walked away as soon as he hit Pierce and before Pierce even got the shot off. He knew he had fouled. That is a legitimate play. Flopping or kicking out your leg on that type of play is oftened called for some supreme players such as Reggie Miller, but Pierce does not do that.

it's really unbelievable

that you think the refs beat the celtics. you lost, end of story. if you don’t think pierce gets the benefit of the calls, i have no idea what you’re watching and you’re beyond reason, which makes discussing anything a moot point.

take off the blinders dude.

Interesting

It’s interesting how others view your favorite team/player. As a Magic Fan, I’ve always thought that we get no respect with the refs, always thought Paul Peirce gets the calls…not to say alot aren’t earned. But doesn’t it just seem that way? I mean take a look at Orlando/Cleveland’s last game. A rare 3 second call? Come on….it’s like Lebron and Kobe get the Michael Jordan rules, but so do others….so we learn to play thru them and to expect them….then play above it…It’s sad that refs are so bad, it’s sad that there are so many actors in the NBA…..Play the game…..See ya in the payoffs!!

On Your Comment

For every foul Pierce gets, he’s probably fouled 3 or 4 times that aren’t called. Watch Pierce only and notice how he’s held before he even gets the ball, how he’s impeded while moving without the ball, how he’s charged for a turnover when passing when he is hit on the arm while passing. Howard got away with one of those last nite. Watch how often Pierce’s shot is “blocked” when he takes it to the rim while the same play for a LeBron is a foul. I do agree with you that NBA officiating is terrible and refs are costing teams games.
