KG Seeking Surgery Soon
Any lingering speculation regarding a return by Kevin Garnett in these playoffs should be coming to an end soon. According to sources, Garnett is seeking a date to have surgery on his right knee sooner rather than later.
"The knee is hurting him too bad right now," one source said. "He just can't play."
According to another person with knowledge of the situation, Garnett sought advice from non-Celtic medical sources on remedies that could allow him to play through the end of this season. And there were points in recent weeks when it seemed the program of rest and rehab were working and that Garnett would be able to go. But when the soreness returned and increased, the options went away.

Gosh who would have imagined he sought care from non Celtic medical staff?
There were probably ten major things that went wrong tis year that really didn’t have to go wrong. Having said that if it was destiny that KG would go down like this, then we still weren’t going to win the title, even if we got Posey, even if we got Roger Mason, even if we drafted Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, even if Doc had played Walker, even if we had gotten joe smith. I am just wildly frustrated and irritated but its really true.We weren’t going to be able to tough enough up front without KG. and he was going to get njured and mishandled or not, he wasn’t going to be much in the playoffs.
One thing I do take with me though is that we went 34-19 after the start and that was with a very very injured team. That was not a bunch of guys rolling over. There can’t be any chance we roll over and die now
Actually "we" went 35-18. that pace would have been 4th best in the league.
Its incredible actually. I am not looking for a moral victory but lets do enough that this achievement receives some well deserved recognotion.
we have to have relentless defensive effort the rest of this season.
Agreed on both posts. There have been a bunch of things go wrong dating back to July, several of them personnel decisions that look absolutely awful in retrospect – thanks for reminding me about Roger Mason, but nothing more catastrophic than the Garnett injury. I’m glad to see him getting it taken care of ASAP.
As for the defense, this kind of listless defensive effort is going to plunge us into the post-season in about 10 days if it doesn’t change.
Why didn’t they decide to get KG surgery sooner? He might have been back for some of the playoffs had he decided to get it done earlier
The usual course of treatment for his type of injury is rest, not surgery
Not to mention the fact that KG has never undergone major surgery.
It’s easy to see why he decided to rest it and hoped it responded. But hindsight is always 20-20.

Why didn’t he get the surgery 2 months ago?
KG's still deciding, apparently...
Well, I read that Herald story at about 1 a.m. last night and said to myself, “Well, that does it, there’s no hope of him coming back, it must be more than a strain…” As I drifted off to sleep, I quietly let go of any thoughts of a championship this year…
But the Herald just published a new story about 10 minutes ago:
Y’all should go read it, but I’ll paraphrase. Basically, KG was on the court today, walking around the perimeter, dribbling for a couple minutes, then he went back into the weight room. The article goes on to state that Doc Rivers and the Celtics have urged KG to hold off on surgery for the time being, while KG—it seems—has decided that he should have surgery sooner than later…
It’s a pretty ambiguous set of circumstances, and I think several different conclusions could be drawn, some which contradict each other. On the one had, we have Doc Rivers yelling at the post-game press conference in reference to KG: “He’s gone and he’s not coming back!” And then on the other hand we have Doc today saying he should hold off on surgery. Why Doc, if he’s done? Doesn’t make sense…if he’s gone, you do the surgery and get him ready for next season. It’s that simple.
My best guess at this moment is that the Cs want KG to gut it out, and he’s scared of doing that for fear of further damage and/or pain. It’s his first major injury and he’s not willing to play with the pain he’s experiencing. The Cs have said that the knee is ‘structurally sound,’ but apparently KG is also experiencing swelling when he works out (which leads one to believe that the knee is NOT structurally sound).
Frankly, I worry about a falling out between KG and the Cs over the way this injury is handled. I can’t say what I’d do if I were KG, nor is it possible to imagine the level of pain in the knee (I’d like to think I have a high tolerance for pain, but everybody’s different and nobody can truly feel the pain except for KG), but I’d hope the Cs wouldn’t pressure KG to do anything he doesn’t want to do. Only KG knows his body, and only KG should determine whether he’s ready to gut it out or not. The Cs should not butt in, no matter what they think they know about his knee.
For KG, I imagine he’s going through a very trying time (just watching him on the bench yesterday made me sick—he was so out-of-it and depressed looking), not knowing the right thing to do. He’s cut from the cloth of a warrior and warriors play till the death. His personal ethic says ’anything’s possible’ and that he should gut it out for his team…but on the other hand his body is saying ‘shut it down, KG, something’s not right’. Personally, as much as I’d wish it were otherwise, it’s best that KG trust his intuition and let go of his macho posturing at this point. And the Cs should do their best to let him make the right decision, and not put any pressure on him…not that they are right now, who knows really, but this is a time that KG needs support, not direction. Only he knows the right thing to do.
From the Cs perspective, they have to be thinking there’s a possibility he could play again this season. Why else tell him to hold off on surgery? They figure that if a month off last time allowed him to play in 4 games, why not assume that another month will allow him another 4 games…4 games which might provide enough of a boost to get by the Cavs. As a fan, I’m thinking that way too. But again, we need to support KG and let him make the decision. Any decision that’s foisted on KG will turn out bad, I guarantee it.

The beat goes on..............
Salmon, I read the update article by Steve Bulpett posted this (Sun) evening as well. Hopefully we’ll get a bit of clarification from the writer tonight on the CSL radio show.
I did want to add some medical clarification to a thought you had regarding the ’structural soundness" of the knee (your fourth paragraph I believe).
In general, any joint can be ‘structurally sound’ yet still produce swelling after usage. Doesn’t mean the joint is at risk of career ending damage and also doesn’t mean the joint cannot function. There are a number of reasons for some swelling post exercise but I’m not going to go into that list here. Just wanted to point out that the two can be mutually exclusive.
To clarify, a ‘structurally unsound" joint will most often show palpable or visual swelling.
A ’structurally sound’ joint does not imply that swelling is a necessary component. Additionally, the soundness of the joint structure may be intact although swelling may be evident.
Again, not trying to change any of the points you made except the implication that swelling = structural unsoundness which is not necessarily the case.
TOO OPTOMISTIC, SalmonAndMashedPotatoes?...
Even if KG could come back for four games later in the playoffs(and that’s not even likely) DO YOU REALIZE HOW LONG HE HAS BEEN OUT?!! He’s has not played full strength for months and you are expecting him to come back into the playoffs without missing a beat in terms of his playing ability and helping the Celtics beat a Cleveland team that is #1 in the East and firing on all cylinders during these playoffs? That might be stretching it a little bit. I think you guys should be focusing on beating the Bulls before you worry about Cleveland…Personally without KG I don’t see you guys getting out of the 2nd round…sorry. That’s just the perspective of someone who sees things in a little less green light.

KG's injury seems like it has taken on a life of its own
It must be a real distraction to the Celts coaches and active players. How they can not be thinking about it?
I’m not saying he should get surgery (he has to figure that out with the Celts input) but if he does get surgery, the sooner it happens, the sooner the Celts (and the media) can move on and see if there’s anything to accomplish in the post-season.
this stuff is unhealthy...
I can’t even take it anymore. I ‘ve already written him off for the year, and ultimtely our champiionship hopes. I fear that this will be a major distraction to the team, which doesn’t need one right now having already lost home court
