No Mo Powe
Bad news - reported by Marc Spears: Powe is done for the year.
According to an NBA source, Celtics forward Leon Powe suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in his left knee Monday night and will miss the remainder of the playoffs.
Powe had an MRI after injuring the knee in the second quarter of the Celtics' 118-115 victory over the Bulls in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series. The injury was originally diagnosed as a sprain, but the Celtics apparently received worse news today. Powe is expected to have surgery soon.
Powe is a free agent after this year. Not sure how much time he'll need to recover but this can't help him much. Really, really, really hate to see this issue crop up again for this guy. Aside from missing him on the court, I feel for him off the court. Hope he recovers quickly and comes back to play for Boston. Get well soon Leon.

ouch...
Does anyone else feel like these obstacles are becoming insurmountable? I love this guy, but he very well may have played his last game in green. All the best to Leon is the future.

Leon Powe Half Off!
Well this hurts us this season but watch Danny resign Leon for 60 cents on the dollar now. No team is gonna give him years now.
Reporter: About a year ago I asked about the Celtics-Lakers thing and you said you'd really only seen it on TV. Now you've been through it, can you talk about playing the Boston Celtics for the NBA championship?
Kobe: It Sucks.
tough break for Leon
The one thing I wanted for the playoffs was no more injuries and I can’t even get that wish :-(
I really love seeing him out there and I hope he’ll be back with Cs next season. I pray for a safe surgery and swift recovery and that he rebounds from this injury as strongly as he has from the past ones.
Actually...
…this may bring Leon’s price down to something we can afford next year. He might stick around. Hope so.
But this year is done. We can’t fight the gods… they clearly had it in for us this year.
If it’s Lakers vs. Cavs… I’ll root for the Lakers. They are our valiant battlefield opponents, and i will miss the rematch both sides wanted… but wish them well. Lebron’s going to have his day though, sooner or later.
I'd rather die...
before I root for Therapist and his crew.
Sorry, that’s just me.

No chance I will ever root for the Lakers
EVER. I am just going to ignore the whole thing once the Celts are done.
Don't you have
…some nostalgic feeling for them? Like Vietnam vets that go back and become fast friends with their former enemies? There are some guys there I don’t like much (well, one… SaVu)… but I do like Kobe’s fight and determination. Guy’s a total warrior. Ok, so he did some young girl years ago… nothing was proven. And who among us is perfect?… that guy can throw stones. I can’t.
I’m sick of hearing about Lebron. Guy travels in every game, never gets called for anything. I want the old guys to win one more.
I despise Kobe more than any player in the NBA
The phony nice guy stuff. Makes me ILL. And, I despise his head coach even more. And rooting for any team with the pansy Vujacic — PLEASE!
Does tweezing your eyebrows make you a pansy?
We should start a new thread, fight that one out. It’s important.

I wouldn’t root for either of them. If you’re watching two great teams play there’s no need to spice it up by rooting for one team or the other. Besides, if LAL wins it shows that they are great but only when Boston is injured. If CLE wins, it shows LAL is really just Kobe+11 and nothing more. Win / win situation in my opinion.
If LA wins it shows it's really just Kobe, Gasol + 10 others and Stern.
There, fixed it for you.
I Live In L.A. And It Sucks. I’ll Never Ever Ever Root For The Lakers (and Stern). Don’t Even Get Me

The team likes good character guys
so that bodes well for Leon. I’d say he’s the most down to earth player on the team. He appears very humble and resepctful.
I can’t take the injuries either. It’s utterly ridiculous at this point. KG, Pllleeease come back!

Wow.
Stay Rammy Leon.
Big blow for the C’s, tough break for our pal POwe.
When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"
Keep Powe
It’s just not their year.
Yet it’ll still be fun to watch just how far this hobbled squad can go.

Career Ender?
How many times has that knee been reconstructed?
hope not
to be fair, I think it has been both knees so the number of operations would have to be counted per knee
"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers" Henry V
Article Unclear
He had the left one reconstructed in college and it required 2 operations. It said he also had ‘a knee’ reconstructed in high school. No mention of which one. For an undersized guy, he needs both his lateral quickness and his ability to leap.
No...
He has only torn the left knee, which he tore in HS – the “2nd injury” was to the left knee, where he aggravated the original injury by rushing back to play in his freshmen year at Cal. He had to have the surgury re-done, but didn’t re-tear the injury.
This was my biggest fear with him coming back with a sprained right knee – the left knee bearing more pressure and becoming injured. Can’t believe it happened on such a average play – can’t be a real bad tear consisdering he played a few more plays on it – this isn’t TA’s ACL injury to say the least.
Good news is that recovery from these injuries is typically pretty high and Powe has the time to rehab and get back int time for Oct/Nov – further good news from a selfish standpoint is that his value clearly will be in an affordable range as he just won’t be able to command years and dollars with a 2nd left knee ACL tear.
Boston should be able to bring him back on a 2 year with club option, which I believe they’ll do because of the price and also out of sympathy for his situation – there is a role for Powe on this team and if its at a value price-wise, I expect Danny to make the investement.
Absolutely shitty news for Powe though – he was looking at 3 years guarenteed on the open market and would have secured his retirement money – now he has to work his way back and make himself a commodity all over again.
by BillfromBoston on Apr 21, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Bill....2 year option
How much will this mean for Powe? Would they be guaranteed years or will he have to make the team each year?
Who knows...
…there are options…I’d imagine he’d get at least a year guarenteed to see how well he recovers…my guess is they’ll throw a club option year or two on there to retain him at a team-favorable price if he comes back strong so they have him at a bargain…
This injury sux, but its pretty common-place nowadays to return 100 percent from such an injury – it clearly wasnt’ a major tear or else he’d have been on the floor right when it happened – probably a partial tear.

From Cal's website re Powe's knee surgeries
Leon Powe to Have Knee Surgery Wednesday
Cal forward to undergo second part of two-step procedure.
Sept. 7, 2004
BERKELEY – University of California sophomore forward Leon Powe will undergo reconstructive surgery on his left knee Wednesday – the second part of a two-step procedure that began with an initial operation in April. His prognosis for the upcoming 2004-05 campaign will be determined after the operation. Powe, the 2004 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, had a bone graft April 21 performed by Dr. Richard Steadman at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colo. Now that the graft has healed, he will undergo the second surgery, also to be performed by Dr. Steadman. As part of a normal postseason physical, it was determined that Powe would need a special procedure to strengthen his knee. Powe then consulted several specialists and underwent a series of tests to determine the best course of action for its long-term benefit. Powe initially had reconstructive surgery on his knee in the spring of 2002 after he sustained an injury following his junior season at Oakland Tech High School. Powe returned to the court for his senior year and earned McDonald’s and first team Parade magazine All-America honors. As a freshman at Cal in 2003-04, Powe led the Bears in scoring with 15.1 ppg, and he topped the Pac-10 in rebounding with 9.5 rpg, playing in 27 of Cal’s 28 games.
3rd Reconstruction of Left Knee
If the above article is accurate, this would be his 3rd reconstruction. Keep in mind that as a righty, this is the leg he elevates with. Don’t know of a basketball player who’s had 3 reconstructions on his knee and continued to play at a high level — especially an undersized one who requires quickness and lift.
The hope I guess would be that what Bill says is true and that it’s not a complete tear. But I think it’s safe to say his future as an NBA player is questionable right now.
Why is that safe to say?
He’s fully recovered from his previous injuries and was quick and explosive afterward – What makes this a career-jeopardizing one?
That’s speculative on your part – it may be uncommon, but he’s spent 4 healthy seasons on that reconstructed knee and the surgery does not have a caveat that states subsequent surgeries weaken the knee.
The knee recovery will be determined by the severity of the injury and the quality of the corrective procedure – once healed they will be able to test its strength and durability – previous injuries may or may not effect the recovery strength.
The number of surgeries does not determine the liklihood of recovery – its a fallacy that previous surgeries mandate a less-than-100% recovery or an increased probability of re-injury – if the knee recovers 95% or more of his former strength, that’s all there is to it.

I hope you're right
I just don’t know of any athletes who’ve had 3 reconstructions on the same knee.

Huge Bummer
Powe’s already had ACL tears on both knees, making this his 3rd such tear. I can’t imagine what’s going through his mind right now. Hang in there, Leon. We love you.
This obviously puts our playoff push in serious jeopardy. Scal might be back on Thursday, so that’ll help a little. Anybody know if we can still petition the NBA for an extra roster spot?
As for Leon’s impending free agency, I’d assume the team will tender him a qualifying offer and that Leon will accept it. It should be relatively cheap and allow him a year to show he’s recovered from surgery. I don’t assume any other team will offer anything better, nor do I assume the Cs will kick him to the curb.

agree...similar to what just happened with TA
When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"
Different knee than the brace was on?
Braces are blamed for additional injuries to the opposite knee because they make you play, jump and land so ackward. Whatever the case I feel bad for PO PO PO. Great guy, great story, gutsy talented player and he desreves better than this
Is it Soup Yet?
Okay...
I thought I had read he had ACL tears in both knees. But I’ll trust you on this one, Bill.
by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Apr 21, 2009 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions
it’s worrisome that the knee went on a seemingly meaningless play and without much contact if any- just like his prior injury. It doesn’t bode well for Leon’s ability to stay healthy. It’s a shame because he’s such a great guy and he was an integral part of what we were doing. baby’s leverage just increased significantly. I also have to wonder whether the injury on the other knee created this injury perhaps because he was favoring one leg over the other. maybe he shouldn’t have come back.
i don't think
the injury happened because he was favoring the other leg. he just landed on it awkwardly.
No
Injuries throw off a body’s natural symmetry. A player will unconsciously overcompensate because of the injury, putting extra stress on the non-injured parts of his body. Throw in the fact that the left knee was already torn previously…and this was an overcompensation injury all the way.
On another note, I hesitate to start calling Powe ‘injury-prone’. Some guy ran into his knee, and it got sprained, and now, coming back from that injury, he overcompensates and injures the other knee. With surgery, rest, and rehab, Powe will come back as strong as ever. Powe’s already come back twice before from major knee injuries, has the mental wherewithal to trust his body after injury (which is a major hurdle), and in a man of great character, work ethic, and integrity. He’ll be fine next season. I hope we do the 2 year contract extension BfB hypothesizes above…
by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Apr 21, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Additionally...
…he played 4 full seasons before this newest injury, so the “injury prone” moniker is somewhat spurious – he hadn’t been hurt since his sophmore year in college…

another tough break
for a guy who’s had his fair share of tough breaks. this one’s got to hurt the most. if he had just made it through this year he probably would’ve gotten a pretty decent contract.
Kinda reminds me of 1987...
…except even worse. The fact that this team won 62 games is a true testament to their grit and determination.

That sucks
I’m afraid to say it but that might be his career. I mean three ACL tears! Dam that sucks!
Being at last night's game
We, and most if not everyone sitting around us, did not even know Powe was injured. That is how unremarkable it was. I still do not know when it happened.
agreed
we went to get food at halftime and heard one person say they heard he was hurt, but no one knew how or when or what. Sucks for Leon, he is such a great guy. He deserves more… really hope he’s back with the C’s next year.

Replacement for Powe
Who replaces Powe on the Roster?
NBA Playoff Rules
So once the playoff rosters are set teams are not allowed to add players even after they have been hit by injuries or worse? Too bad there isn’t a special exemption to the rules in these cases! I guess this means Mikki Moore will see more minutes and maybe Brian Scalabrine.

The Celtics are cursed...
I feel so bad for Powe… I hope his surgery will be fine and that he’ll recover quickly. Our chances against the Bulls are getting lower every day but I’ve still got confidence in this team. Just battle till the end and never give up, though the repeat is impossible, that’s all I’m asking from our guys.
If there was any question...
about whether the Celtics could still contend for the title this year, I think this puts all those questions to rest. No way we win the title so shorthanded up front.
They Still Are Playing Well
It is amazing how well the Celtics have played without Garnett and Powe (and others) during the past month or two. This proves that this team has just as much heart as did the injury plagued ’87 Celtics.
1987 NBA Finals:
“The Boston bench, which seemed so deep in 1986, rapidly disintegrated. After an early-season accident on a stationary bike, Bill Walton was sidelined with the foot injuries that had plagued him throughout his career. Scott Wedman was struck down by a heel injury and never played for Boston again, and Jerry Sichting was slowed by a persistent virus. To bolster the frontcourt, the Celtics picked up Darren Daye and Fred Roberts, but they needed time to build confidence. Without a strong bench, the Boston starters were forced to play Herculean minutes. As a result, Bird, Danny Ainge and Robert Parish were each troubled by nagging injuries. Then, late in the season, McHale broke a navicular bone in his right foot and tore ligaments as well. The doctors were worried that continued play might cause McHale permanent damage, but because the Celtics seemed to have a good chance in the playoffs, he decided to play hurt.” -NBA.com
One odd thing ...
is that the Wedman injury was “day to day” … forever.

Is that the same lebron that was wearing a yankee cap and telling the NY press that he would love to play there..oh, and this was done while introducing his new signature shoe series in Madison Square Garden ?….Leon on the other hand, is a real team player..hope he comes back 100%….if the Lakers do end up playing Cleveland…I’ll be watching baseball..
If it wasn't for bad news........
……we wouldn’t have any news at all.
Broke my heart to hear the MRI report today. I was afraid of that last night when Doc said “it doesn’t look good” for Leon. Palpation and manipulative efforts by the medical staff on the injured knee last night meant it was not a surprise to the staff as it was to the rest of us today
In contrast to our previous discussions re: KG’s knee, Leon’s knee HAS structural damage.
Best to you Leon.

BTW, anybody doubting the story. I played for 20 minutes or so on a torn ACL the day I did it and then off and on for six months afterwards not knowing what it was. That can happen. (of course I did not tear any cartiledge, which is apparently the more painful aspect)
run along home now, jonjon...
We will all see… but Celtics Pride is an intangible that doesn’t show up in statistics and cannot be “measured”, but rather often it seems to show itself when the team needs it most, in the playoffs especially…
Keep Your Head Up, Leon
I love Leon, but his knees have not been kind to him over the course of his basketball career. I had pretty much become ok with the fact that the Celtics may not re-sign him this offseason because surely he would be offered a nice chunk of money elsewhere. However, this injury changes things. Perhaps, selfishly, Celtics fans will get to see a lot more of Leon in the future if he re-signs at a decent price. But as a fan of a truly genuine guy and an even harder worker, I really wanted to see Leon break the bank for himself. Let’s hope he can still do that.
Let Powe Go...
Come contract time, the Celts had to decide between Powe & Baby.
Now, the decision has been made.
Another game, another injury! How many body-blows is one team suppose to absorb over a period of two months?
Oh well, thanks, Ray…at least our 1st round exit will not be a sweep!
For those who may have been wondering after watching Games 1 & 2….the Bulls were a sparkling 13-28 on the ROAD this year!
Karma?
Celtics fired Lucky the mascot just before the start of February.
Since Lucky`s firing :
-Celts lose at home to Lakers
-Scal got injured
-KG got injured
-Pruitt gets DUI
-Powe got injured {twice}
-Baby missed games to injury
-Rondo misses games to injury
-Marbury signs and gives us no results
-Ainge has heart attack
I couldn`t stand Lucky when he was here…now I greatly miss him!!!
We make our own Luck...
The Leprechaun is still there, he’s biding his time… good luck to Lucky, finding another gig as sweet…
Powe's Injury is a Break for the Celtics
Now they might be able to afford to resign him. BBD is likely beyond their budget at this point.
Huh?
How much you think Davis is going to get in this market – i’d be shocked if he got 5 million a year…he’s a 3-4 million dollar player – scoring 26 points on 21 shots is not going to fool GM’s into paying him 7-9 a year.
I bet they take Leon back for a 1 year deal with club option for 1 or 2 years at a million per season and get Davis back on a 3 year deal at 4 per year…

Just Wish Leon A Speedy Recovery And Forget About Business For Now.
I think what’s happened to Danny and Scals this season should put all this into proper perspective. I feel so bad for Leon, but he’ll be back.
"I don't come to play, I come to WIN"--Larry Bird
"Criminally Negligent Officiating"--Tommy Heinsohn
He's coming back
I think Leon would still play in the NBA even if he had to crawl from one side of the court to another. I’m curious to hear what the Celtics organization and the players are saying about this though so far.
Get well soon, Leon
Lousy break for Powe & the C’s. Hopefully, he’ll recover & resign.
Quote from the Mayo Clinic on ACL Recovery -
“The grafted ligament eventually becomes as strong as or even stronger than the original ACL. Graft failure, at worst, is less than 5 percent.”
Doing some preliminary research to determine fact from fiction – as I thought, previous injury is not the determinant on the success of future surgery – If Leon has a successful surgery and doesn’t rush his rehab, as he did previously, he has an extremely high probability of coming back 100 percent WITHOUT any increased risk due to previous injury.
Considering the level of treatment he will receive and his age, I expect a full recovery and I hope the Celtics due right by him and somewhat take advantage of the situation at the same time by giving him a team-favorable deal.

Wishing You the Best, Leon !!
Tough break for a tough kid, has been through a lot of adversity in life. I hope he has successful surgery and comes back 100% as a CELTIC !!!!
Leon / Future
I would never bet against Leon making it back. DA can now bring both BB and Powe back next year. I wonder if we could end up being a phoenix east down the road with Rondo reprising the Nash role and with a lot of runners and shooters. Hopefully better D though.
