Don't Expect Much More Tony Allen
Some have wondered why we didn't see more of Tony Allen when Ben Gordon was dropping 42 points on us. Doc has an answer:
"One thing I learned as a coach," Rivers said, "a guy scores, you don't scrap everybody that's got you there. The last time I checked, Ray Allen has played all year and we led the league in field goal percentage defensively. Because a team has had two good games - and Gordon's had one - we don't want to panic and start changing our whole team. That doesn't mean Tony [Allen] won't play. But taking Ray off the floor [in Game 2] would have been the answer - but we would have lost that game because we wouldn't have had Ray's shot."

I want TA to take Marbury’s minutes, not Ray Allen’s minutes. I would only use Marbury if a House/TA backcourt proved to me that they couldn’t get the ball over halfcourt under pressure.
What is Doc talking about?
Hey Doc, last time I checked basketball was a game of match-ups. As coach, you should try to work them in your favor. It’s not like you should have benched Ray Allen in Game 2. But it’s more than a little strange that in a series where you can’t defend the perimeter you haven’t given many minutes (only 4 seconds last game) to your best perimeter defender. Surely, you might want your best defenders on the floor…
And, sure, Ray hit the shot that won the game. But maybe Tony could have stopped Gordon down the stretch and we wouldn’t have needed that shot. This is a defensive team first and if we keep getting into shooting contests with the Bulls, we’re going to lose.

Rest
There’s rest between games. During the games there are more timeouts and half-time is longer because of TV. The travel time is equalized. There are no back to backs. These guys don’t need rest during games. They need to play better defense, they need to improve their spacing. They need to improve on setting picks. They need Rondo to stay in front of Rose all the time and they need to get back in transition. They need better ball and player movement. They are also missing KG for the in-out game and his passing and defense. They do not need rest during the game.

Trisha Yearwood
When Trisha Yearwood was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry she sang “She’s In Love With The Boy”. When asked why she sang that particular song she said “[I sang what got me to the dance]”. I have nothing against TA, but he did not get us to the “dance”. Ray did, as did Pierce, Rondo and Perk. And we might as well add Big Beast and Eddie and maybe some others. TA gave us the least to get us here and this is not a knock on Tony. It’s just the way it happened for whatever reason.

New Rotations
Yeah, but not everyone who got us to “the dance” is with us anymore. Don’t the C’s have to play small lineups for much of the game now that Powe is also gone? Why not trot out Rondo, Tony, Paul, Ray and Perk at times. I feel like Paul can handle a Ty Thomas assignment and Ray can handle Salmons, who doesn’t run around the court nearly as much as Gordon does. That leaves Tony guarding Gordon and allows Ray to commit more energy and focus on shooting the ball. Plus, I think we can all agree that more Mikki is not a good thing.
Risky
Trying new stuff at this time of the year is risky. We’ve been playing without Leon for awhile and his injury shouldn’t change anything. (Feel real bad for Leon. It’s a big loss for us). I’m sure TA will get to play. I’m not sure why he isn’t, but his contribution all year has been minimal and there must be a reason for that. If he wasn’t more consistent in the regular season, this isn’t the time to focus so much on him now. If we won both games by 20 points this wouldn’t be a conversation. It would be more about playing Pruitt or Walker. The C’s just need to play better as a team and the rotations will take care of themselves. We aren’t using the regular rotations because they haven’t worked yet and we need to win these games. Thus we need, at this time, to depend on the starters. To me we need to get more from Steph and Eddie than from Tony.

What are you talking about?
TA’s contribution has been minimal? What? Do you remember the month of November, when TA averaged 9.9 points a game and Eddie House was shooting about 18% from 3? Up until his first ankle sprain in early December, TA was the bench’s best and most productive player. He’s had a bad year in terms of injuries, but he’s been a big part of the rotation when healthy. Factor in the fact that he had to be the de facto point guard for most of the year when he has been healthy and that he’s had only about 7 games where he’s actually played with a point guard on the 2nd team. Imagine if E House and TA had their year’s reversed…Eddie loses the 30 games to injury, while TA gets stable minutes and the chance to play with a true point guard on the 2nd team…things might have turned out differently.
Marbury needs minutes because he actually plays point guard, unlike TA or House and the last thing we right now is to go back to not having a point guard. But as we continue to give up 100 point plus games, and Eddie House continues to be an easy guard on the perimeter, it might make a little more sense to inject some defense and some off-the-dribble penetration and creation ability that comes with the TA package. Without Powe, we are almost a strictly perimeter team; playing TA and going to him in the post (against Hinrich, Rose, or Gordon) might help to offset that imbalance a little, and help us get some easy buckets.
I agree with Scott that TA is better than Marbury right now, but that’s at 2 guard. At point guard, the only one who should be spelling Rondo is Steph.

Good Points
But TA plays better when the team is playing well. Right now their bigs are stacked up at the basket which takes away TA’s best game.

Who said anything about playing Tony over Ray???
How about Marbury? You know, the guy whose been struggling for 2 months. Remember him? The guy whose played 20 minutes thus far and has more turnovers (4) and more fouls (4) than he does points (3) and assists (3). The same guy who is 1-6 from the field. Tony should be playing over him, not Ray! Tony is much more qualified to play spot minutes than Marbury right now. We simply need to go back to point guard by committee (off the bench), you know kind of like we did last year when we won the championship.
By the way I’m one of the guys who desperately wanted Marbury here. However, his play has absolutely proven me wrong. We are running out of time, and Tony Allen is just a much better player than Steph right now.
