Don't Overlook The Beast

I just finished writing about "Rondo and the Big Three" and I stand by the fact that those are the best 4 players on our roster.  However, it would be a disservice to overlook the contributions of Kendrick Perkins.  I'll let Gary Dzen break it down for you:

How's this for a line: 16 points, 19 rebounds, 7 blocks.

And no fouls.

Kendrick Perkins turned in a dominating performance in Game 5 against the Bulls Tuesday night, but the biggest stat he turned in may have been that he did not commit a personal foul. In 48 minutes on the court, Perkins managed to avoid the ire of the officials.

"He played very smart," said Celtics coach Doc Rivers. "And like I told you yesterday, we talked to Perk. I mean, we just don't have enough bigs. He has to stay on the floor. And we're giving him a few minutes rest here and there. But he's our only seven-footer -- really, that we're playing -- and he was fantastic. When you look at his blocked shots, the changed shots, the tough rebounds, he was fantastic tonight."

Note: Perkins is just a little over a year older than Rondo.

Kudos!

Perk is playing out of his mind. No longer gathering himself under the basket. No more foolish fouls. He is becoming very reliable as a low post scorer as well. Playing with KG has completely transformed him. Clifford Ray has been a huge help as well.

the c’s have a foundation and the cornerstone is the perkster. he will only get better. he needs a big man sub to help him because it will take powe some time to get better.

Nice offensive skills

16 points?!

I thought he got his points from a KG assist.

His game 5 stats is better than Howard’s 24-24 IMO

seems like he loves playing against the bulls

remember one of his career highs was against the bulls 25points i believe . .if things dont workout this year next yr looks really good especially everyone healthy. .just hope danny resigns big baby extends rondos contract and gets more bench help maybe try and get marbury as the permanent pg sub and get a good back up center if they can do all that 09-10 season looks really good to me

maybe...

because he weighs 50 lbs more than noah…i also think the no fouls thing is a bit of a red herring. he certainly fouled, he just didn’t get whistled. that being said, he had a good line last night.

true

I remember thinking that a lot of his early blocks could have been called fouls, but he was fortunate that they were “letting them play”

Bulls Fans are going nuts

because of how they let Perk play down low and the Rondo foul at the end. Usual fan reaction to a loss, go after the refs.

by Fafnir on Apr 29, 2009 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Donny Marshall said it last nite on Comcast post-game... Doc's comments and fine helped

he sais "The leaugue can’t fine me for saying this, so I’ll say it. Doc Rivers talked about the refs targeting Perk and got fined. Next game? Perk gets no moving screen calls in 48 minutes…

hats off to Doc then

he played the game well

Thanks for mentioning Rondo's age. I have been hammering on the fact that Perk is 10 months YOUNGER than Powe

Perk is still a very young guy and Cliff Ray is still working with him. LA LA fans want to talk about Bynum? Perk has actually been a very big deal for us for 2 years and gotten little recognition

Between Perk and Davis and Rondo, we have such a wonderful decade to look forward to as we ease the Big 3 kicking and screaming into the pasture. One more great player, and it might be Walker, or Powe, but I hope Danny can find another gem big man, and the Celtics could keep the “Big Three” aka “big Old Three” playing productively for at least another 5 years.

by johnnymost on Apr 29, 2009 9:40 AM EDT reply actions

Bulls fan here

not one foul call lol!!! C’mon guys, anytime your starting big man doesn’t get one foul call that means one of two things: 1. He isn’t playing aggresive…which is never the case with Perk (2) Refs.

I will never blame a loss on the refs, but that is crazy to me, especially with Perk because he is so physical.

Good game!

Saying the refs help our Perk is like saying Mel Gibson helps out Rabbis.

by BOSPORTS on Apr 29, 2009 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

If, right after he got arrested/etc., Gibson gave lots of money to a synogogue and grinned while they insulted him

it would be roughly equivalent.
They are calling it equally, but the difference is that our bigs aren’t large. Having Perkins get away with shoving our bigs all around the court while they’re getting rebounds or whatnot makes a HUGE difference, while since he outweighs them by somewhere between 1~200 pounds the inverse isn’t exactly true.

by Prevenge on Apr 29, 2009 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Brad Miller weighs how much?

Are you serious? He is by far the most physical big in the series, how else has Gordon come off those (moving) screens enough to get Ray Allen to get 6 fouls, something that never happens to Ray? It goes both ways I guess, not having 1 single big, whatever the weight for 2 OTs because of borderline calls at best was a killer, far more than Perk not being called for a foul last night. OK, let’s say he fouled 2-3 times that weren’t called, did that change the outcome? Give me Noah, Thomas and Miller all healthy and without fouls over just Perk who if he gets in any foul trouble, the Celts basically have to play with 4 guards. Advantage Bulls, easily.

by KJ33 on Apr 29, 2009 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

did it change the outcome...?

depends…were we shooting on those fouls? lol j/k

Vinny...you look confused

by Knowledge32 on Apr 29, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Miller's so slow

even Perkins can just run past him [Which is hilarious!], and he plays on the outside most of the time. Noah’s our best rebounder, but it’s hard to rebound when you set up for position and Perkins just shoves you hard out of position [and it’s hard to score in the paint if when you drive and someone hits you so you miss you don’t get calls]. If Noah flopped, we would probably get those calls. :P
Also, everyone’s setting moving screens this series – both teams equally well [or unwell, whatever way you want to look at it].
Ray Allen was just holding him. I guess? I didn’t see the first four fouls, though, and those last two fouls he got called on were total BS. I was definitely confused.
Oh: also, Miller gets completely tired out if he plays more than 25 minutes, which he has. A lot. usually at the end of regulation. Mmm turnovers that lead to fastbreak layups by Rondo.

Danny Ainge

is at the center of all this. Every move he makes is like fine wine — gets better with age. His drafting of Rondo was brilliant, but it doesn’t stop there. Obviously, creating the championship team was the real gem, but it’s how that trade is affecting the future. He traded for guys who are clearly having an incredible influence on our young players. Rondo, Perk, Baby and Powe have all taken enormous leaps in their game and The Big Three absolutely have something to do with that. The smoothness of the transition from The Big Three era to the post-Big Three era looks very promising and Danny’s influence on that is truly masterful.

by BOSPORTS on Apr 29, 2009 9:59 AM EDT reply actions

That’s the truth. One of the reasons it took so long to regain our championship form is we had no “character core” of truly successful veterans to teach and keep the heat off the young guys. What if we’d had time and players to groom Billups, Mercer, Johnson and Tony Battie the right way. Heck, even Kedrick Brown and Mark Blount might have learned a thing or two. It is amazing how the development of our players accelerated with the examples set by Garnett and Allen. Pierce was already here and I do credit PP and coaching staff with developing players and keeping things moving forward during the last couple years.

by Thruthelookingglass on Apr 29, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Great post, BoSports

Danny has truly worked his butt off to create championship possibilities, and he has a lot of help, the C’s are surely one of the deepest teams ever in terms of ex players who contribute their knowledge and personal time to help the team and the staff with all aspects of the approach to the game, from scouting to players to coaches and on into managemant.

by jyrecelts on Apr 29, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but ...

why doesn’t he get another developmental big, then? What good does it do to have Walker, Pruitt and Giddens sitting on the bench, when the team needs, and has needed all season long, another big or two? It took Perk 3 years to be decent; that’s likely to be the case with any big we can draft. Better get that process started now. Ticket, Perk and Baby are fine, but after that … Help!

perk was a raw talent...

straight out of high school, no telling how long it would take to mold a college player who is in better shape and has a better grasp of the fundamentals.

The Future

I’m telling you, Ainge will be preparing for the day he can make a huge offer to Kevin Durant. Most all of his moves going forward will be based on that.

3 of our 4 best players...

…in the playoffs so far are 24 or under. If Baby keeps coming on as he has, Danny may only be looking to fill the 2 easiest spots, the wing positions, for our winning team of the future. And who knows, Billy Walker may be up to one of those 2 spots as well.

(Yes, yes, we need more height among our bigs even before KG goes, but that’s really Danny’s only major challenge right now. Remember: our bench is already 2 players better than it has shown.)

Summer 2010

Celts will resign : Pierce, Rondo

Celts will NOT resign : TA, Ray A., Scal {aka Jackie Moon}

Available for Celts to sign : LeBron, D-Wade, Ming, Nowitzki, Stoudemire, Bosh, Tyson Chandler, Joe Johnson, etc.

Why break up the best starting 5 in the league?

Didn’t you just finish reading those glowing articles about Perk and Rondo? As they get to their late 20’s prime, could you possibly put better vet role players around them than KG, PP, and RA?

Resigning Ray is a no-brainer.

Title 18

that doesn’t mean we’ll be far enough under the cap to sign any of those guys

Roy Hobbes will be along any moment now to explain all the details ;)

seriously though, I’m pretty sure the only way we’ll be players for any of those guys is if we trade KG and/or Pierce for expiring contracts (ie. not going to happen)

not true...

I read an article on RealGm I believe breaking down the celtics cap situation in 2010, there are a ton of factors but when you figure in the new contracts for big baby and rondo there goes all your cap space from Ray leaving. Rondo will be making big money by 2010.. and I certainly hope he’s still in green.

Perk may have reached this level a couple years earlier if not for all his nagging injuries. He had those shoulder issues, and he had a wasted year due to that plantar fascitis. As soon as he stayed healthy, he improved by leaps and bounds.

by moiso on Apr 29, 2009 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

WOW!!! Mr. Stern doing the Celts some favors...

Man! I’m not even a Bulls fan and what was that call at the end!!!! That was the easiest flagrant call you could possibly make and they didn’t call it?!! What does Rondo have to do?!! Hit him with a baseball bat?! The worst thing is that Miller had the ball completely away from his body, which obviously showed Rondo wasn’t going for the ball and he hit Miller in the face(HE FREAKIN’ NEEDED STITCHES!!!!) and that’s NOT a flagrant?!!!
You can’t blame this game on Miller….He got nailed in the face….got stiches on court and was forced to shoot the free throws right after all this happened…
It’s one thing to play aggressively, but it’s another thing to be so physical that other teams are reporting you because of it being over the top.

by NBA FAN on Apr 29, 2009 3:30 PM EDT reply actions

Dude watch the play again

He didn’t need stitches because Rondo accidentally hit him in the face, he needed stitches because he landed on Pierce’s elbow.

The fact that Perk didn’t “commit” a personal foul speaks to the quality of the officiating.
