Iverson Done for the Season (Career?)
"Can something be the most predictable thing in the world and yet still surprising? Given AI’s pride and his likely refusal to reject a supporting role for peanuts this summer, we may have already seen his last game in the NBA." - Matt Watson

I don’t think his career is over. There are plenty of teams out there who will be willing to pay for him to start. He’s not going to win a championship, but he’ll still be playing in the NBA. His attitude these last few months though should put a damper on anyone thinking he’s a team player. Reminds me of when he was playing with the Sixers under Larry Brown. He’s never learned those lessons.
Can you imagine what would have happened if we would have made that trade for him a few years back? Yikes!
He’ll be playing however next season. Phoenix anyone?

Likely refusal to reject?
What the hell does “likely refusal to reject” mean?
Seriously, though, I doubt the Suns would want him. I can’t think of any team w/ a real chance of winning that would put this guy in their uniform. He may have to retire, or play for Washington, Sacramento, or the Knicks. Maybe the Nets would take him.

Curiosity
Is Iverson a free agent? If you want to talk about lousy trades this would need to go down as a classic.

It was actually a great trade for both teams, TrueGreen.
Dumars was able to free up a ton of cap space while doing minimal damage to his team by bringing in the team/coach killer on a cameo basis.
Denver drastically improved their team by subtracting the coach/team killer and bringing in an actual grown-up…..not to mention a better player… to set a better example for the Mr Snitch and the rest of the adolescents in Denver.

Agree And Disagree
It was a great trade for Denver. But I don’t like the notion of giving up very good players for the sake of gaining cap space. I’m sure the thinking was about Billup’s age and I guess Iverson had an expiring contract. But Detroit still had some kind of a chance this year with Billups. That team is aging and is near the end. They will need to rebuild totally. Billup’s would be a guy I would want around to bridge that gap. Also, the damage Iverson has done to the Piston’s image to it’s fans won’t be easily forgotten. I think he did more than cause temporary damage. He’s just quickened the demise of that team. Detroit’s situation is somewhat similar to the Celtics as far as age goes. Trading Billup’s is roughly the equivalent of us trading Ray Allen, because of his age, to free up cap space. I know this has been mentioned by some on this Blog, but I sure disagree with it.

The team/coach killer will always have a home.
For some unexplainable reason, Iverson puts people in seats. So an inept GM, (The Suns certainly have one of those.) will sign him.
The Suns could do something here. I can’t imagine Shaq will be in a Suns uniform next season.
This is off the wall but I think it could happen:
A sign and trade involving Iverson, O’Neal, and players/draft picks from either LA or Miami.

Steve Nash and AI in the same backcourt would create the league’s first instance of negative defense. They would actively find some way to give the other team points.

Maybe Larry Brown will take him.
One crazy thought of mine. But Larry Brown might be the only coach in NBA who knows how to integrate AI into his team.

Brown has too much of a good thing going in Charlotte to want Iverson around ruining it with his act. Because of that, Jordan is the one inept GM that I don’t think would be in the sweepstakes. Brown also doesn’t have the defensive anchor he did in Mutombo to constantly play the 5-on-4 basketball that Iverson’s “play nobody but the passing lane” defense would dictate as Iverson’s man has the perpetual clear path to the rim.
Charlotte is the one place I’m 100% certain he won’t land.

Mark Cuban would sign Iverson. Keep Kidd, and start Kidd-Iverson-Howard-Dirk and suddenly Dallas has a shot at being competitive (albeit not a very good shot) in the West for one more year (until 2010, when their next plan begins to unfold).
Maybe a desperate Clippers team could try to get involved?
The Knicks to sign Iverson to a one year deal? They already owe Utah their draft pick so they’re looking to win as much as possible next season.
