About Those KG Rumors

You might have read the following on the Daily Dime:

Even more interesting is the rumor, nothing more, that the injured Kevin Garnett might attempt a Game 7 return.

"You must be one of those conspiracy theorists,'' said Allen, when asked to divulge any secret Garnett-will-play scenarios.

Marc Spears exchanged texts with Ainge and talked to Doc Rivers and gives us the following quotes:

"I'm not planning on him the rest of the season," said Ainge.

"Yes, he's out," coach Doc Rivers said at the time. "I feel for the season, but we just don't know yet."

In totally unrelated news, Brett Favre wants everyone to know that "Nothing has changed. At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football."

Just sayin'.

HE'S PLAYING!!

Can’t wait to see the scene… I know he’s coming back tomorrow night.

It’s tough not to think what it’d be like had KG and Powe been playing. Ah well, entertaining series. The NBA needed a series like this. Good for Chicago getting some confidence back and the city enjoying basketball again. I can see them being next years Atlanta Hawks. But man do I hate being the reason teams get confidence.

I didn't see any 'No's in there...

Ask a woman if she got a boobjob, and if she says anything other than ‘NO’ then she did…

He is in. Mark it.

My head says it'd be madness...

… but my gut tells me he’ll at least give it a go. ESPN’s seven questions article on the series, found here, has at least a couple of experts agreeing there’s still a shot.

On KG’s odds of playing:

Adande: I’d say 55 percent. He seemed different in Game 6, almost as if he were gathering himself. I don’t think he could take watching Game 7 and what’s probably his last shot at another championship without doing something. He’ll want to at least try to get out there.

Sheridan: One percent always looms a lot larger than its numeric value. Doc Rivers threw out that number the day before the series began, I pressed him on it and he then said “10 percent” before backing down to ‘1 percent.’ As I wrote at the time, one ain’t zero. And as I think about it Friday morning, I’d say 1 percent looks more like 50-50.

ESPN

Just interviewed a boston globe sport reporter ( Jackie) she a lady. She stated that when she pressed Ainge about KG playing. If KG came to him and doc and told them that he wanted to play. The answer would be YES. It’s up to KG.

by Celtic33@FLA. on May 1, 2009 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

Shouldn't be up to KG

He’ll obviously want to play.

GM’s and coaches should suppress his passion with reason. Why take the chance at all if there’s even the slightest possibility of damaging whatever is wrong with him even more? I say don’t sacrifice him for a season with slim championship hope. We’re just too hurt.

I do believe the Big 3 are 3 of those elite players that are capable of playing longer than your average NBA player. Why jeopardize that? Rest and reload this off-season and slap all the doubters in the face next season.

Please don’t put that phony pompous narcissistic fool Favre and Garnett in the same post.

I don’t like Garnett’s act any more than I like Favre’s crocodile tears and phony posturing but at least Garnett’s act is sincere.

I’m betting he does a Willis Reed on Saturday.

by Finkelskyhook on May 1, 2009 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

No way he plays Saturday

But what I think is funny is how the Celtics keep assuring us he’s out for the playoffs. But if that’s the case, why don’t they just let him have his surgery? I think they’re planning on him coming back at some point. But not Saturday.

by Stu on May 1, 2009 3:31 PM EDT reply actions

Seriously

Stop with the favre hate. The guy is every bit as tough as KG. People can rip on him for crying all they want, but are you so tought that you can cough up blood at work and still finish the day?

by angryguy77 on May 1, 2009 3:32 PM EDT reply actions

I’m not questioning Favre’s toughness. He’s overrated for sure. I’m questioning his character. All of that phony, insincere posturing with the Packers of the last few years and all of those crocodile tears with the press slobbering all over his every phony move is old and tired. Either retire or play. Stop screwing your employer.

Garnett is who you see. It clearly isn’t an act. I think his rabidness is over the top. But unlike Favre, he’s loyal to his organization, his league, and his team.

by Finkelskyhook on May 1, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Loyal and favre

It wasnt Favre that started the whole retirment talk. It was the media and they made it a story every year. Yes he didnt handle thing perfect Ill admit that. But the media made it so annoying. As far as being loyal, the guy restructured his contact to help the team sign mre talent. He never misseda game and played through injury. How many loyal athletes do you know that do that? Futhermore, how do you know nthey are “crocodile tears”? See how ESPN is exagerating Rondo/Hinrich? The media did the samething to favre.

by angryguy77 on May 1, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

also

Saying the guy is overrated shows a lack of understanding at the least and bias at its best. I’m not going to bother you with his numbers because you clearly cant comprehend what the significance is of what he had done suring his career despit bad years of coaching and surrounded by bad talent.

by angryguy77 on May 1, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

farve is extremely overrated

he has stayed healthy so he has put up big total career numbers. he is first all time in interceptions… that tells you enough right there. the guy is a risk taker not a game manager. When several of those risks work out over the course of a post-season his team can make a run. when his gambles dont work out his teams flop in the first round or at crucial junctures during the playoff push. it’s the same act every year for farve. the greats are there every year like brady & manning.

by WillyBeamin on May 1, 2009 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Manning and Favre

Have the same amount of rings. I know its not about hardware but if you are going to talk about success in the playoffs that comes into play. How many games have you watched him play? Your argument sounds like one huge talking point that has no substance to it. As I said in another post there he did not have the benefit of good coaching for a good chunk of his career, he also did not have the weapons around him that Brady and Manning have had. But yet he still managed to put up the numbers. As far as being there every year, i really dont know what you are saying. I can tell you this much, had Favre the weapons Brady did, he would not have lost to the Giants.

by angryguy77 on May 1, 2009 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I needed to amend that. This is because unlike Brady, he can avoid the sack and make plays outside the pocket. This isnt saying anything against Brady, He is great in his own way.

One other thing, is marino overrated because he played all those years to get his numbers and never win a SB?

by angryguy77 on May 1, 2009 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

marino doesn't hold the record

for most interceptions all time.

and for the record, brady has 3 rings with the likes of david givens, david patten, troy brown, and deion branch. TALK ABOUT TALENT.

farve had 2 hall of famers on his super bowl team with him.

Didn’t have good coaching??? his head coach was mike holmgren for years in GB… he’s gonna be a hall of fame coach some day.

by WillyBeamin on May 1, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

The scariest part of that picture is to see how short Davis really is. It’s amazing that Davis is the player he is inside at his barkleyesque hate.

by Finkelskyhook on May 1, 2009 3:33 PM EDT reply actions

KG

0% chance that he will play.

by twelve_twenty on May 1, 2009 3:44 PM EDT reply actions

The Garden would Rock

Do you know if he just only got dressed and was sitting on the bench, what the adrenline would be like at the Garden…..

Just think, would that have a psychological effect on the Bulls if they see Garnett dressed for the game….. not saying he’d be coming in….

God only knows that Rivers uses only a 7 man rotation for the playoffs…..

But just to have him going through the pre-game drills all dressed up sitting on the Bench……..

More to come!!

by Ancient Red on May 1, 2009 4:01 PM EDT reply actions

The question is ...

… if in the small event KG comes back, should he start or should he come off the bench?

I would say that he should come off the bench so as not to upset the chemistry of the 1st five.

no KG.
(if it were the finals …then maybe)

IF I WERE KG

just suit him up just to scare them bulls. i know kg is piss rite now.

Jackie McMullan's info

Jackie was on “Around the Horn” today and said she had just gotten off the phone with Danny and had asked him point blank that if KG came to him and asked to play in Game 7 would he let him. He answered ‘yes.’

So there’s still a chance. KG’s crazy enough to do it, that’s a given. But I’m not counting on it.

I also join the chorus of fans who have grown tired of this story. But it is what it is.

by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on May 1, 2009 7:15 PM EDT reply actions

Good news, even if the chances are unlikely.

Even a brief 10 minute playing spurt from KG would have a huge impact on the game.

by endverse on May 1, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

KG, to play, or not to play?

I agree with previous posts. KG will be un uniform. He at least will perform better than most of the bench even if plays for part of the game, and will be an inspiration to all, including fans. If he is not in uniform, then it is apparent that the Celts have no plans of progressing any further into the series. But what about Big Baby? He has come into his own.

by The Mysterian on May 1, 2009 7:48 PM EDT reply actions

LET'S GO CELTICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even if KG doesn’t play, which I hope he does, he should at least put on his uniform to intimidate the Bulls and scare them. I think they would piss their pants if he would have his uniform on and play just a min in the game. I think they would try to hurt him even more just so they would have a chance at making the next round. KG has a loud mouth which i love and wish he would have been up hyping them up the way he did during the first 5 games. I think he wasn’t up the last game because he was getting attention and causing a big stir with the media. I would love to see the magic and the celtics play. It would be a pitiful series if the magic played the bulls.

by big3celticsfan on May 1, 2009 9:35 PM EDT reply actions

Put it on KG!

You played 4 games last month, nothing else has happened since then, you can go for 10 minutes remember anything is possible!

by tonyallenisbest on May 1, 2009 10:21 PM EDT reply actions

Willis Reed or no...

What happens if KG plays 5-10 minutes and is unproductive and further injures himself, the Bulls win a close game again, and the Celtics never make it back to the Finals during the rest of KG’s contract? I wouldn’t say any of those things are improbable.

I almost hope he doesn’t play, though it would be awesome to watch it happen. The equation is already too tight in this series without introducing a new variable. What if KG starts and then Boston is still down 10 again in the second half? They can’t be forced to rely on him at all to win. They’ve played six games plus the last month of the regular season without him…Game 7 isn’t the time to start changing up the dynamic like this.

by Will Shelton on May 1, 2009 10:31 PM EDT reply actions

kg

bottom line: the garden will rock with or without KG. How could anyone possibly dream KG, as a PLAYER, will be effective tonight?? Sure, there may be that cheesy “Rocky” moment where the everyone goes nuts and it gives all the idiotic talking heads even more to wax upon, but if you are counting on that shot to give a lasting edge, go watch Hoosiers or something like that again. As far as intimidating the Bulls, has anyone watched the post game interviews with the players?? Derrick Rose does not even have a pulse and would actually probably enjoy playing against KG for his scrap book or something. Same with Gordon and if anything, it would FIRE UP Noah even more. That is why this team has made it this far. They beat the celts in Boston once and nearly did two other times.
Make no mistake, Rivers and the Boston org wants to win badly and if KG could make any sort of legit contribution, he would play. He can’t. You know, if so many people would stop blogging, interviewing, writing about this sappy drama, Rivers and company would probably have to discuss it 2000 percent less and would not be forced to make so many drippy ambiguous comments. I am glad that last year when Bynum and ariza were out for the playoffs, there was not this incessant diarreah of speculation. Yawn.

I love KG’s basketball game but i do abhor his woofing or whatever that amateur hour shit is called. But ultimately, how sad would it be if KG came in for nine minutes to re-injure his knee against Brad Miller and a very average upstart Chicago team? and the truth is, that could EASILY happen (WHICH IS CLEARLY WHY HE IS NOT PLAYING< DUH). Think about his future and that of your team’s.

by lakersbluedevil on May 2, 2009 9:47 AM EDT reply actions

Garnett’s entrance would probably have more of an effect on the crowd than anything else.

I harken back to an old Pistons series where Bill Walton entered. It probably hurt the team more than it helped them but it energized the crowd. The ghost of Garnett probably has more in the tank than Walton did at that point. So it’d probably help on court a little more. But regardless, the crowd it the last thing that needs help in a game 7 in the Gahden.
