OH BABY!!!

"Oh baby youuuuuu!  You got what I neeeeeeed!"

Not once, but twice Glen Davis stepped up and hit clutch shots to win the game tonight.  The best move Doc made all year was making Baby take extra jumpers in the offseason to give him that midrange shot.  Money.  Love it.

  • The Celtics played very poorly in the first half and managed to stay in the game solely based on Paul's hot shooting.
  • I can't believe how bad a defender Mikki Moore was tonight, literally running away from Anthony Johnson as he drove the lane twice in a row.
  • Good thing they built a decent 3rd quarter lead because it was all the C's could do to hold them at arms length the rest of the way.
  • 2 points for our bench tonight.  Two.
  • Odd stat line for Rondo, who got a sneaky 21 points and 14 rebounds but just 3 assists and 3 turnovers.
  • Another day, another rock solid game by Perkins.
  • Ray Allen 0-5 from 3 point range.  Got some points elsewhere, but his slump continues from long range.
  • As Brickowski pointed out in the comments, very mature plays by Paul Pierce to pass the ball off in those situations at the end.  In years past he might have forced it up himself.  He trusts his teammate and Baby came through.

I don't know if we really deserved to win that game but good teams win those sometimes.  Thank you Big Baby.

hahahaha BBD!!!! well done Glen.

When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"

Credit Should Go To Pierce

Pierce made the plays, Davis just finished. It shows Pierce’s maturation as a player. In past years he would have forced his own shot against the double team.

Actually...

…it wasn’t in past years that he was forcing his own shot, it was in Bulls game 6… with 2-3 defenders all over him, and with a wide open, 51-point red-hot Ray Allen at the top of the key… he took the impossible shot and lost the game.

Great game by PP, back in form tonight. Maybe he’s changed after the bad experiences with Chicago.

Yes. Great pass.

I wonder, was that great trust in your teammate or that he didn’t want to take another off balance shot?

Either way, great pass. Also I liked how he kept taking it to the hole in the first half. Ray needs to start doing that, it’ll help him get out of his slump. Particularly when Howard is out, 90% of their shots should be attacking the rim.

We'll Orlando's lost on buzzer beaters twice before this postseason

and came back and won the next game both times…not to all three of the Celtics losses in round one were decided by the final shot. So that’s not a huge concern.

And I think very few of us think Davis got lucky…he’s shown he can hit that jumper all season. BUT, other than Rajon Rondo, you can’t tell me that you wouldn’t have wanted anyone else on the court taking the final shot. As a Magic fan, I’d rather lose on a last second shot by Glen Davis than by one by Allen or Pierce (although ideally we just wouldn’t lose on last second shots at all.)

Big Baby and Free throws

At least Big Baby came through with a jumper, after punishing the team with his terrible free throws. He and Rondo should have to stay behind and shoot 100 free throws for every one they miss- between them, they shot a rotten 50% from the charity stripe.

My boy Mikki

played AWESOME TONIGHT!! He basically won us the game, 6+ minutes +1, gave rest to our bigs and kept everybody else out of foul trouble. Besides our hero Glen Davis, Mikki won us this game!!!

That is not the case.

I’ll be covering this more thoroughly in tomorrow’s Babble, but as soon as he got on the floor, Mikki lost Rashard Lewis for a corner three, got hit with a delay of game warning, gave Dwight Howard and and-one and then had Lewis hit a jumper over him.

Spare me, please.

LOL

I knew it would be nickname day for the Bable

and regarding Mikki – the reason why he ran away from AJ was because he got burned by that early Lewis jumper – he overcompensated

you can’t blame Rondo for those drives, on one he was picked and on the other he was beat at the top of the key where there’s plenty of room for his big men to back him up, which simply didn’t happen

by Jeff Clark on May 11, 2009 7:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i know i’m nitpicking here but i do place at least some blame on rondo for the second aj drive-

with his speed and lateral quickness he needs to, and is certainly capable of, staying in front of johnson at the top of the key.

we know he has really fallen in love with the poke from behind gamble, and i don’t complain when it works but he’s capable of better perimeter d, especially on slower pgs like johnson.

The best thing was....

The reverence and admiration he showed for Bill Russell in the stands after he made the shot. He knows his history. Can you imagine making a shot that saves the season in front of an icon like that? Gives me goosebumps thinking about it.

by sgs1313 on May 10, 2009 11:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I love that he got a chance to take the big shot after giving up the FTs....

that gave Orlando the lead.

He didn’t have an awesome overall game, a few TOs and the free throws kept him from that.

But he rebounded hard in the second half after a poor effort in the first and he hit the big shots.

Concerns for Game 5....and the Series

The Celtics shot the ball VERY well, and held Orlando to 40% shooting. Yet, had to win this off a buzzer beater. I hope this is not a sign of how well the Celtics should play and how bad Orlando should play in order for us to win.

by afflatus on May 10, 2009 11:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't disagree...

The Celtics played VERY well. And that is my concern. We played a heck of a game and earned a tight win. Problem is the Magic did not play that well. For them not to play well and almost taking the game concerns me.

Actually I take what I said back

2 points from the bench. Now I feel better. To have no bench support and pull out a win says something. If you don’t get bench support, OF COURSE you have to make up for it by having the starters playing exceptionally well.

The bench

The bench was pathetic tonight, with Starbury leading the pack. He has two decent 3 point shooters with him in Eddie House and Scals on the floor, yet continues to take bad shots instead of seting passes for the shooters.
If Ray Allen doesn’t break out of his 3 pt. shooting slump, we can just about kiss the series goodbye, if the bench continues to play the way they did tonight.
Hopefully, Tuesday will see a revived Allen and bench.

Agree the bench was bad, but Scal couldn’t even get a shot up last game and Eddie couldn’t this game. The Magic are really sticking to them and we have to find a way to get them going or try something different. I don’t really blame it on Marbury. The way he could help out would be to actually make some shots so they have to pay attention to him. He looks ready, willing and able to hit open guys; too bad he can’t make an open jumpshot.

Scal also had some dumb fouls which didn’t help the cause tonight either. Hopefully with the home crowd the bench guys step up again.

Awesome Game!

We really have seen some exciting games this playoffs. Thank you, Glen Davis!

Paul was awesome tonight start to finish (we’ll overlook those vacuums of foul trouble.

I have to partially come to Mikki’s defense, btw. I wasn’t really paying attention to him in those plays with Anthony Johnson, but even with a pick I fail to see how Johnson can beat Rondo that badly. It’s mind-boggling to me. He’s Dr. Defense and Mr. Matador some games.

by Berkcelt on May 10, 2009 11:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree generally, but it’s like that play where Turkoglu blew by Pierce. PP got beat so bad, MM had to fully commit and Lewis was wide open for a short corner three. If the defense is that poor at the point of attack I find it hard to fault the help defenders too much….Of course, I’m just trying to be fair to Mikki who at least played with some energy and hustle tonight, tipped some balls. He’s just not that good bottom line.

by Berkcelt on May 10, 2009 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I beg to differ

What that Hedo/Pierce play again. Pierce still had Hedo between him and the basket. Mikki didn’t need to help. He realized that too late and then tried to get out on Lewis.
The difference is Rondo doesn’t keep his man between him and the basket. Plus he failed to recover on the pick. He needs to fight through the pick and get back to his man, which is what Moore expected him to do on the play. Although they were both at fault because of poor communication Rondo was more at fault here than Moore.

by Jaycelt on May 11, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah rondo needs to play in front he is quicker than A.J and hasnt been bumping around screen or staying in front…when rondo locks up he give opposing teams problems…you see how good the D is when Marbury is locking down..only if he can hit that J

All Mikki

has to do is provide 8-10 minutes and play the best he can. It is so much more important to keep our bigs out of foul trouble and give a few guys quality minutes of rest. We are not asking him to score 40, he’s not going to lose a game for us in 8-10 minutes. Mikki is very important to our team

Also: Kudos to Perk. Again.

I just love his defense on Howard. It’s about as good as you can get with someone that physically dominant. If Howard doesn’t have prime-A position Perk has the advantage one on one.

And once again Perk plays through that bum shoulder. Man, it’s an awful sight seeing him grab that thing.

Perk's Performance Lost In All The Excitement

Thanks, Berkcelt for mentioning Perk. His performance seems to have gone unnoticed in all the excitement. He played a great game overall, but what I’m referring to is when he came back in after hurting his shoulder. He made 2 or 3 great defensive plays that prevented baskets. I believe one was a block of a Johnson drive and another was defending Howard under the basket and forcing him into a tough shot that was missed.

Jeff...

Mikki Moore was guarding Rashard Lewis. You want him to leave a lights out three point shooter to guard an aging role player? Plus it was actually Perkins rotations. Perkins played a horrible defensive game tonight. He left Dwight Howard wide open on three different occassions. I’d say Perks worst game during the playoffs.

"You want him to leave a lights out three point shooter?"

absolutely, when the choice is between a layup and a 3 point shot, you stop the layup every time

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers" Henry V

by Jeff Clark on May 11, 2009 7:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But that's my point....

It would not or should not have been an open lay up for Johnson. Perkins was right there then he just backed off. If the option is a “wide open” lay up or a “wide open” three by lewis, then yes I agree. But Johnson’s “wide open” lay up could and should have been contested by Perkins. Because if the option is a contested lay up by Johnson or a wide open three by Lewis, then the decision is an easy choice to allow Johnson the contested lay up. In fact Moore had just left Lewis on the previous play to stop Johnson. What happened? Johnson kicked to Lewis for a wide open three, splash. Either way Jeff, it was pretty much pick your poison. Moore was in this situation because of a defensive breakdown by the Celtics. How that becomes his fault is beyond me. Mikki is quickly becoming the scapegoat for any play that breaks down while he is the game. That is not fair at all.

Perk Left Howard Open

He did this when he had to cover up for other guys mistakes. There were also times when he let guys score while he kept Howard off the boards. He had to balance fouls, playing backup defense and guarding Howard. I think he did a great job. And I mentioned above that he made 2 or 3 great defensive plays when he came back into the game after hurting his shoulder.

Uhm no...

These were specific instances where Perk was not guarding anyone! He merely lost Howard, and Dwight Howard is not someone you can lose. Kind of like Rashard Lewis when he’s behind the arc. If you are guarding him you are the last defender the Celtics want helping.

we played better d, closing down the lanes and keeping them off the dribble. we don’t win anything easy this year. pp played smart, which he frankly hasn’t this series. perk is the most cosistent celt and is the most valuable up to now. just hope his shoulder holds out. mikki and steph were nothing great but are being a bit scapegoated here. doc has to play mikki like he did tonite; not much, but to save fouls for the others. no mikki tonite and we have 2 foulouts. steph played good d and pushed the ball.

Exacly - the defense wasn't GREAT, but

it was good enough to make the Magic stop coming inside and throw up brick 3 after brick 3…

The Magic don’t try very hard to go inside against defensive pressure, and that’s the key to winning the series

We don’t score for half the 4th quarter, miss a bunch of free throws and get 2 points from our bench! I’m not sure if we won it more or Orlando lost it. But it don’t matter!! I’ll take it! The effort was definitely there tonight compared to game 3. Still, Baby saved their butts tonight.

Decent game tonight boys!

1. Rondo needs to play D like Marbury…hes being pretty lazy on the defensive end right now
2. Orlando is lucky Ray Ray isnt shooting good or this series would be done already
3. Big Baby is hitting the same shots KG would be getting, only if he was 7 feet tall for Defensive purposes!
4. Key notes for game 5 – Get Dwight in foul trouble and make sure Lewis & Turk dont get hot
We got lucky to win tonight not scoring for almost 7 minutes in the 4th..but ill take it a win on a bad night…Game 5..best home crowd in the NBA..lets get it!!!

Disagree Scott. Perk played pretty well tonight. Thought his D on Howard was very good early.

by celty86 on May 11, 2009 12:13 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

My issue wasn't with individual defense....

It was his rotation defense. There was several plays where he rotated over in anticipation to guard an Orlando player and then just backed off at the last second, leaving a giant hole in our defense (luckily for him Mikki Moore exists, so we just blame him for it). He played fine defense when in position against Howard, but there were multiple plays where he simply lost him, leaving one of our guards to try and defend him. That is not a good strategy in any circumstance.

SCOTT

yes, Perk's D on Howard was quite good early

Magic made an adjustment at half and had R Lewis throw it straight down to Howard deep under the basket rather than out on the blocks where Perk could muscle him; give SVG credit for a decent half-time adjustment

Both teams missed a ton of shots down the stretch in the 4th Q. Somehow I wondered if someone in the stand was controling the baskets with a remote. Given the technologies today, it is easy to do.

Not bad for a 2nd year, 2nd round draft choice

A throw in for the Delonte West and Wally Szerbiak trade for Ray Allen.

KG goes down, Stubby comes in and is hitting buzzer beaters in critical playoff wins.

NO PROBLEM!!!!!

What feels better

I don’t know what feels better. A road win to tie up the series or knowing Norman Chad is not getting any sleep to night? LOL

Great win guys!

I know I’ve come on this board when we’ve lost, and when we’ve won. Sticking to my word, I want to congratulate you guys on a HUGE win.
There’s nothing else to say, but a huge shot by Big Baby!!

And, just like I’ve been saying all along…….you guys can have Eddie House, Rondo, and whoever else.

PP is the frigging man!!

I don´t hav a problem with miki staying with his man, he got burned once for a triple so…

What i didnt lik was House didnt get his looks, that almost cost us…

Why start baby and then when he gets 1 foul put in Scal until h gets 2 fouls?

Put miki in half way tru the 1st period for a junk foul…

i have to admit, when i saw the ball leave baby’s hands i thought the game and maybe the series were lost. Terrifying to see someone other than ray or pierce take that shot.

Nice to have the win. But there are ominous signs...

- The relatively low assist total doesn’t bode well. PP was great, but we can’t go far playing each-man-for-himself ball, regardless of how great PP is.
- The lack of 3-point defense was very worrisome. Magic got off 27 3-pt shots, almost ALL of which were WIDE open. We just got lucky that they missed all but 5.
- Free throws. Geez. They’re FREE guys! Hit a few.
- Bench… oh my. Why the team did not look to free House, or pass to him when he was free (which was often), I don’t understand. He has been white hot. Marbury started off great with an excellent quick assist and teardrop basket. Next 3 shots missed, and he was gone after 6 minutes.
- Rondo was solid, but not the Rondo we need… the one that gets 18 assists per game.
- But the most worrisome thing is… this Magic team, as currently configured, is really quite mediocre. The way they were shooting, it should have been a blowout, not a 1-point buzzer-beater.
- And the biggest problem is… if/when we get past Orlando, we have to face the Cavs. And my friends, the Cavs today are playing on a completely different plane from either the Cs or Magic. (Denver too, btw.)

(Btw, Bill Kennedy clearly has it in for the Celtics. They should investigate, and bar him for refereeing any more Cs games this season. Refs were horrible altogether, sometimes in our favor, sometimes not. But Kennedy was uniformly anti-Boston, all night.)

But the 4 points from Joey Crawford ended up being the difference, as much as Baby...

Goaltending that wasn’t; then no call on Rondo after the ball hit the glass

Also, I Don't Remember This Being Mentioned

Another great timeout play called by Doc with great execution.

I thought the last play was poor. Why would they run the play down to 1 sec before anything happened!

by tmak26b on May 11, 2009 10:20 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The Shot Was To Have Been Taken At 4 Secs

They took it to 1 sec because Baby was the 3rd option on the play and Pierce had the poise to see the defense and make the pass, which was the proper play. Actually the play was executed perfectly. How much time did Orlando have to come back after the beautiful red light around the backboard started to shine?

Game would be over if he missed. They had 11 sec to inbound and shoot the ball.

You have got to be kidding.

This is pessimistic even for this site. Cheer up they won the game.

So you want them to play for an offensive rebound??

Thank god you aren’t the coach! That was a perfectly executed play, and you still have an issue with it? Living with you must be a chore…

and if they got a dunk right at 10 seconds...

that gives the Magic time to go down and score their own buzzer beater
