Cold Water: Game 4 yet another bad performance
Yes, Baby's shot was great, and yes, Paul's pass was great. But it was a terrible game from the Cs.
First... imagine for a moment that Baby had not made that shot, either because he missed, or because a foul was called prior to it. Your opinion of the game would be the opposite of what it is now.
About the shot... before Baby hit it, he set 2 picks. One for Ray, then one for Paul. The pick for Paul was a CLEAR FOUL, as he moved through the whole thing. This in a game where the refs were calling every little touch. If the whistle had blown, the game would have been over.
The Magic... were absolutely TERRIBLE in this game. 40% FG%, 5/27 3-pointers. If they had hit just ONE more 3-pointer, they win. If they had hit even close to their usual percentage, they would have blown us out. This game should have been an easy win for the Cs, not a squeaker.
Lest you think it was our defense that caused them to miss so many of their shots... fuggetaboutit. The vast majority of their 3-point attempts were WIDE OPEN. We got lucky: they just missed a lot.
The refs were horrendous in this game. They called a number of ridiculous fouls (especially Bill Kennedy, whose performance borders on criminal). The bad calls probably even out, but several of them, including a non-existent goaltending call by Crawford near the end of the first half, accrued to the Cs' benefit. If Crawford were not as blind and stupid as he was then, Cs probably lose.
After Eddie lights up two games in a row, the Celtics basically ignored him for this whole game, even when he was wide open. In part, this is what happens when Paul runs the offense.
Also: Ray's still having problems. No way we get anywhere in these playoffs without Ray. Marbury had 2 great plays right away, then missed 3 shots and was pulled. Scal was ok on D, invisible on O. Mikki was just awful, clueless on D. We sure could use a ready-to-play Bill Walker or JR Giddens... unfortunately, Doc failed to bring them along during the regular season.
But... the biggest problem is still Paul. Yes, he had a great game. But the Cs had a total of 16 assists. Rondo had just 3. That is NOT how we are going to win games. That's how we can squeak by when the other team is playing horribly. But that's all. Normally, this game is a loss... and that's mostly because Paul Pierce was too often running the offense, instead of Rondo.
RONDO MUST RUN THE OFFENSE, as he did in game 2 when Paul (thankfully) sat. The problem with Paul has been TWOFOLD:
(1) till Sunday, he had had a bunch of bad games. But more importantly...
(2) he tends to try to run the offense. When he does that and he's playing badly, it means lots of turnovers, sticky ball, little team play, low assist numbers. When he does that and he's playing well - as he did in game 4 - IT'S STILL VERY BAD FOR THE CELTICS.
The only way this team dominates is when:
(a) Rondo is playing his game, and
(b) Rondo runs the offense, getting everybody involved with easy looks.
That allows Ray to get going early, and Eddie too when he's in -- and pretty soon, it's a rout.
But it doesn't look like Doc gets this. Maybe he does, but he sure didn't sound like it in the press conference. He seemed to think this was a good game. It was far from a good game. It was, in fact, a ticket to failure. I.e., if they play this exact same way again, they will probably lose. And probably in a blowout. And against the Cavs... just forget about it altogether. "Embarrassing" would be the headline. Four times in a row.
If you look at our lineup dispassionately, it's pretty ridiculous, especially compared to other teams in the playoffs. So we have our reasons. But that doesn't mean we can't win... we can, but only if this team plays to its maximum potential. That's not happening now. Worse, it doesn't look like they know it.
Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

Do not agree
It was most importantly a road win. Any road win is important especially in the playoffs. Also, Celtics 6 times had balls go in and out on jump shots in the 1st half and were in the lead most of the game. It was an overall great win by the Celtics
The thing about "if"
Is that it just that. The same can be said about our shots not going down. If ray would make a few more shots this isnt close. If rondo hits a few more ft, we dont rely on a game winning shot.
I am with you on the performance, we didn’t play well and could have lost, but we did manage to hold off the magic during our offensive drought. But in the end we gutted it out and won. We do have to play better if we want to advance, but the same can be said of the magic. They rely on the 3 too much and until they back off of that they wont go anywhere. They have to a degree in this series I know, but its still too much for a team to have consistent success at this level.
The officiating left something to be desired, but it was not in our favore. And if Davis was moving on the screen, he must have picked up the habit from Howard.
We shot 53%
Once again.
53%. Plus we didn’t turn the ball over.
There was nothing wrong with our offense.
It’s all about the defense.
We had a great assist to fg % in our two losses but we still lost.
It’s about winning, not who’s getting assists.
Unlike our two losses everyone was shooting well because they were getting good shots. Even Ray. Yes, he missed all his 3pt shots but they were all good open shots and he did shoot 6-13. It was because Pierce was handling the ball more than any other game in this series, not despite it. Ray got his best shots when he and Pierce were playing a two man pick and roll. It works with PP and Ray because unlike Rondo they have to respect Paul’s jumper.
This is what Doc said:
"Managing his minutes tonight was tough because we needed him on the floor. He was creating a lot of helps that allowed everybody else to get shots, and he can create his own shots. But every time he got a foul you had to take him out. It was tough."
It is about winning
…of course, you’re right. The thing is, I’m concerned here about our chances of winning IT ALL, not just one game in the 2nd round. The biggest challenge to winning it all… and there are many… is Cleveland, coming up next (we hope). And my point is simply that we can’t beat Cleveland playing this way. Our only shot at that is to play great basketball… and that is never going to happen with Paul running the offense. He can do a lot when he’s feeling it, as you pointed out…. but he’s not a PG, and besides, if it’s going to turn into best player vs. best player, he’s not as good as Lebron, so we lose that way too. To say nothing of how deep the Cavs are compared to us, how well they play as a team, etc.
No, the only way we have any shot at winning the ECF is if Rondo runs the offense the way he did in game 2. We must achieve greatness in at least 4 games, or it will be lights out.
Yes, thats why youre views are different. you still expect this team to win it all, for whatever reason. they will have accomplished alot by just making it out of this series imo.
you guys are looking at it the completly wrong way, specifically the lakers fan. the magic messed up in this game by not stepping on our throats, not vice versa, that was completly unnacceptable from the magic to lose that game
7 minute stretch in the 4th without scoring, because our best player is on the bench because of phantom fouls
on the road, exhausted, and depleted. no production from our bench WHATSOEVER, NONE!!!! I believe there bench had over 30, and RAY ALLEN HAD ONLY 12 POINTS.
haha, youre telling me we should have won this game by more?
3-2
With Rondo playing like poop.
Thank God for the captain
Absolutely
Rondo played like poop.
Thank God for the captain… he saved this ugly game. (With help from Steph, Baby and Perk.)
Now if Rondo could get his act together, we could be good vs. Cleveland. When Rondo’s on, we win because of it. When he’s off like this game, maybe Paul can save the day… though it will be a lot harder to do that against the Cavs of course.
