Survive and Advance

Finally.  Thank goodness that is over.  I don't want to see the Bulls again for a long time.

A few closing thoughts:

  • No overtime, not even a very pretty game.  But the Bulls could have given up down 13 at the half and they never went away.
  • That said, the Celtics closed it out with defense, the way it should be.
  • I knew that Eddie could win us a game and he stepped up when we needed him most.  Thanks Eddie.
  • Rondo picked a bad time to get sloppy with the ball in the 4th, but overall another solid game with 11 assists.  He's hands down the series MVP.
  • One more time: Hats off to Ben Gordon, Derrick Rose, John Salmons, and the Bulls.  Good, no... great effort.
  • As for Noah, I still dislike him and his non-flagrant foul on Rondo (are we even now Chicago fans?) was chippy at best; but I give him credit for his hustle and knowing his role.
  • Missing free throws in the 3rd and early 4th helped Chicago hang around, but we made them at the end, and that's what counts.
  • It is amazing what a difference the bench makes.  Scal and House came up big today and whaddayaknow, no overtimes.  We still have perhaps the best starting lineup, but we need more from the bench to keep advancing.
  • Pierce (20) and Allen (23) led the way in scoring, but they spread the wealth too.  House had 16, Baby had 15, Perkins had 14.  Nice box score guys.

Next up, Orlando.  Can't wait.

Well that was fun.

Hats off the Bulls. They played very well.
I hate them all now.

We’re rid of them!

Game one is on Monday. Not enough rest. I’m a little worried about Rondo-perfect storm of bad ankle, fatigue, and mental not there-ness to end this series. And I’m REALLY worried about Perk’s shoulder. PP and Ray could use more days off too.

Beating the 7th seed without last year's NBA defensive player of the year

and without our backup power forward who was huge in last year’s finals. You Chicago fans are pretty funny. Wonder if the Cubs will EVER win the world series?

Guts and grit.

Don’t count this team out. I’m not sure that this team has peaked yet. Even with the hot start, I didn’t think they played anywhere near the level of last year. Add in Marbury and Moore, lose Powe and Garnett – they’re still finding their way, I think. This game (and series) might be the start of a roll. It won’t ever be pretty (not with the current line up) but they have HUGE heart. Much props to Perk. he has been a rock on both ends of the court!!! Bring on Orlando!!

the best team won and experience was the big factor. tho rondo was the mvp of the series, he was less a factor in the last 2 games and eddie and scal were the vets who came thru from the bench. eddie was great on d as well. the refs stunk, stank and were downright stinky. way too many hard and cheap fouls by the chiboys and where was that traveling call in the 1st half. and how can the league give chi a point in the 2nd half for the 3 the refs missed, and we couldn’t get the points portland got with 6 players on the court ?

well thats just it, hes listed as “inactive” on the roster.

by spinz on May 2, 2009 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions

The rules changed a few years ago

You now have 15 roster spots at all time, and you can declare a maximum of 12 of those players “active” each game day – with the power to change active/inactive lists until a certain amount of time (60 minutes? 90 minutes?) before tip.

So to answer your original question, yes, if KG was physically capable, he is eligible to play.

by GLS on May 2, 2009 11:56 PM EDT reply actions

I agree.

If they don’t catch it by the end of the quarter it should be a done deal, no reversal. Otherwise you could theoretically wait until the end of the game. Now that would be something!

"Just do what you do best."
~Red Auerbach

by daveedee36 on May 2, 2009 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

with all the things that happened in this game the league could come in now and change the point margin by about 5-10 points.

by spinz on May 3, 2009 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Had they waited till after the end of the game, and it was a 1-point margin

…then, believe it or not, they would have to rule that the game must be REPLAYED, from the point when the error was made. This was not a ref error, it was a scorer’s error… can’t just ignore it. They HAVE to add that point sometime, somehow.

I will agree that there are a lot of non calls for text book calls, but that is where the NBA is these days. For any call one team gets, the other gets just as many. Unfortunately, officiating is terribly inconsistent. I mean they don’t even have a standard for traveling. But if you’re implying that the Bulls lost because of picks, well I don’t know what to say to that.

Gotta give Marbuy and Mikki some love tonight

First, Mikki played only 3 minutes, but those were huge minutes when the C’s padded their lead in the second quarter. He had a tip-in bucket, was 2-2 from the line, drew an offensive foul on Miller and had a couple of boards.

As for Marbury, he may have played the best defense of the night on Rose. He consistently kept him out of the paint and in general he hustled his butt off, made a couple of nice passes and hit two clutch free throws in the fourth quarter.

Neither of these guys played a starring role tonight, but their contribution was key.

The crowd was AWESOME tonight.

by vinnie on May 3, 2009 12:20 AM EDT reply actions

Team Effort

Exactly. That was a great win tonight because it felt like everyone contributed at some point in the game. It wasn’t just Pierce or Allen having a huge game. The bench stepped up, as mentioned Moore was big just before the half, Steph hit 2 big freebies and played hussle D, and HOUSE! Eddie changed the momentum of this game the minute he stepped on the floor. Every player gets some cred for the series but this win especially.

I will be glad to see the end of ‘da Bulls for a while. On a sidenote called Eddie House having a big game in the comments earlier, so I’m sorta proud of myself on that one. I think we can beat the Magic, so let’s turn our efforts to that one.

by celticspride003 on May 3, 2009 1:00 AM EDT reply actions

Thank goodness that series is behind us

I couldn’t handle another OT game with Gordon hitting everything for everywhere. Just raises my blood pressure through the roof.

But today was an awesome game. I can’t get enough of Eddie’s shot and his swagger. That tech was way worth it.

by jimmehx on May 3, 2009 1:21 AM EDT reply actions

Some points

Some very weird ref calls:
- Double tech on Perk and Miller. Perk did NOTHING, but hold his shoulder.
- Rondo gets thrown to the ground, no flagrant. How is that different from Rondo’s flagrant for throwing Hinrich? I’ll tell you how: Hinrich grabbed Rondo first, but Rondo in game 7 did nothing whatsoever to create that foul.
- An Eddie tech for taunting the BENCH? After they taunted him? Wow.
- Fyi: That “great” Rose block of Scal’s dunk they keep showing? It was a foul. Rose hit Scal on the forearm, very clearly.
- The Paul phantom tripping foul doesn’t even make the Weird list, since at least that one can be excused… refs didn’t see anything, so they make something up, as usual.

And… They showed Noah sitting alone in the locker room after the game, looking very upset, talking to himself. I like this guy, a lot. He plays extremely hard, with his whole heart… and you cannot hate a guy who puts his soul into the game like that. (I’m gonna assume he did not intend to throw Rondo to the ground like that.) We would love this kid if he was wearing green.

by DRJ1 on May 3, 2009 1:24 AM EDT reply actions

double tech? ridiculous. should have been nothing. totally normal play.

rondo down? well, evens out. so no complaints.

eddie tech? kind of absurd.

but mainly, that rose block was clean as could be. an amazing play. like prince on miller a few years ago. hats off to rose on that. very impressive.

by ChainSmokingLikeDino on May 3, 2009 1:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Watch the slow-mo replay

Rose hit Scal on the forearm, making it a foul. But it was hard to see live, so not complaining about the no-call. Nevertheless, it was actually a foul. Truth.

barely

….every play in the nba has slight contact but really, that was a good block. scal is slow. i love the guy, hit some big shots tonight. but i have no complaints about that being called a clear block. truth ;) is now the time to complain anyways?

thats a damn good play.

and...

isn’t hand part of the ball?

by ChainSmokingLikeDino on May 3, 2009 2:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Not complaining, BELIEVE me

This is only for the sake of discussion, and for fun, because I totally agree that the call was understandable. And yes, it was a great play by Rose. But in reality, it was a foul.

You cannot see the hit to the forearm in full motion. But on the slow-mo replay it is clear that Rose did hit Scal’s forearm, which is definitely NOT part of the ball, and therefore it was definitely a foul. But that’s only in a perfect world, i.e., the opposite of the world the refs inhabit. There was no WAY they were gonna see that in the live game. Hey, I’m just happy they didn’t steal the game altogether, because they did suck (in other ways), again.

by DRJ1 on May 3, 2009 3:26 AM EDT up reply actions

How come Eddie House, after 2 full seasons with the Cs, only JUST came to the realization that if he plays hard on defense, that’s GOOD for the team, and good for his longevity on the court? I don’t get that….

by DRJ1 on May 3, 2009 3:52 AM EDT reply actions

He gets a hard time defending...

..you can’t help either knowing that Ben Gordon can also shoot through tough defense…

Woj

Great quote from his article:
“Rivers is right; the Bulls weren’t much fun to play. And they’re only going to get better. But the Celtics didn’t win a championship by accident last season. They’re world-class grinders, and that’s what they did Saturday night — they paper-cutted the Bulls to playoff death.” Grit and Determiniation, Go C’s.

STARTING A TEAM (PG)

If I were starting a basketball team, Rondo would be my 1st choice for a point guard.
Exceptional play by the young vet. Who averages a triple-double throughout a playoff series? Rondo has to be mentioned along with Chris Paul, Darren Williams and Chauncey Billups when speaking on best point guards in the NBA. Thought he should have made the all-star game this year and, Rondo was key in the Celtics winning the championship last season. They would not have won without him.

Rondo is the man.

Your guy Rondo did impress the heck out of me!! If he works alot on his jumpshot in the offseason, he should absolutely be mentioned with CP3 and D. Williams as the best in the league.

RONDO

Rondo has something that CP3 and D-will don’t have, and that would be a championship ring, championship experience, and he is a above average defender. His jump shot is spotty but, compared to last year his overall game has elevated. Should have been an all-star and Most Improved Player.

I think he has it all...

he just needs to gather himself mentally. When he’s focused (like in games 1-5), he makes his free throws, his jump shots, is aggressive driving to the basket, and doesn’t turn the ball over.

Refs

Hope they do a better job in the Orlando series.
Some of their calls left me scratching my head.

Doc Rivers

Doc Rivers has done a masterful job in coaching the Celtics.
There was all kinds of talk of who would be the X-factor for the Celts in victory.
Doc was, and is the X-Factor. Brilliant job.
Can’t believe he wasn’t in top contention for Coach Of The Year.

wow

a lot of work to beat a very mediocre Chicago team. one of the worst front courts in the NBA in Noah, Thomas Miller…get real, those guys are soft and neither would start on 80 percent of NBA teams. Derrick Rose is going to be awesome but he is not yet…a far cry from Pail, Deron WIlliams, Billups or even Devon Harris and Rondo. For now. Hinrich? He almost lost his spot on the team this year for his inability to move his feet. Gordon, a streaky shooter. and i had never heard of John Solomons before.
hmmm.
Chicago played with heart and youthful abandon but those 7 games…a lot of miles on the wheels.

We love to beat mediocre teams in 7 games and send the so called elite teams home in 6.

Hopefully the fakers can get by Houston

Looking forward to Artest laying a couple of whacks on Kobe.

Great win for you guys, but lakersbluedevil is right. It took 7 games and HCA to beat a very average basketball team. You are champions, but just too beat up to go any further against any quality team. Good luck next year!!

Yep, you're right.

Celts aren’t very good, they bought their championship last year and were given this series over a horrible Bulls team that didn’t even deserve to make the playoffs. Matter of fact, they should just have the Lakers and Cavs play tomorrow.

Oh wait, that’s what they said last year…keep counting them out. That’s just the way they like it.

Skimmed Thru The Posts

Maybe these have been mentioned: 1. I think Scals set the tone for the performance of the bench when he had to come in early and played so well. 2. The real Celtics showed up in the 2nd quarter and I felt that Marbury played a big role with his defense and passing. He also hit 2 big free throws at the end. 3 . I think Mikki has been mentioned, but he did alot with the few minutes he had. 4. Has anyone figured out why Perk got a tech when, IMHO, Miller purposely came down hard on Perk’s bad shoulder? To me Miller should have gotten a flagrant 2. But it’s over and we won. That’s what counts.

Congrats on a great series.

I’m not a big fan of you guys, but I hope KG is ready for the Cavs. That’ll be pretty incredible.

Good luck in round two!
