Making A List (and Checking It Twice)

One Grant Hill please.

More photos » by Thearon Henderson - AP

One Grant Hill please.

Here's a very handy list of all the free agents that will be hitting the market in July.  They even have a page sorted by position.

Why don't we pool our collective wisdom and start picking some favorites?  As you make comments, I can update this list.

So far I've just tried to narrow the list down to guys that interest me and start lumping them into vague groupings.

(r = restricted | eto = early termination option)

We Want You Back!

Glen Davis
Leon Powe

Probably too rich for us:

Jason Kidd
Allen Iverson
Shawn Marion
Mike Bibby

I never claimed to be an NBA scout – some of these names are only vaguely familiar to me and if I’ve lumped them in the wrong buckets, just let me know so I can fix the list? cool?

as a bonus, if you agree with someone’s correction, “rec” their comment to make it stand out – thanks

i like rasheed and za za pachula is very interesting and bring back powe and davis if he is cheap enough……

Yes, Jeff's still catching up from vacation I think

Rasheed may be more debated, but I think Zaza’s definitely on this site’s ‘Most Wanted’ list as well.

I think you left our McDyess...

Who is squarely on my wish list.

Others

I would add Rasheed and Anthony Parker to the Celts Most Wanted.

How about another category

Celts Might Consider

Drew Gooden
Chris Wilcox
Matt Barnes
Hakim Warrick, We migth be able to pry away from Memphis, they don’t want to spend
Ronald Murray
Melvin Ely
Cedric Simmons
Keith Bogans
Rasho Nestorovic
Channing Frye – I can’t see Portland spending money on him and he showed some skills with the Knicks.

Lastly, don’t be surprised in Danny signs Robert Swift. He loved the giuy 5 years ago and he just might sign him a la Sebestian Telfair.

by badax33 on May 28, 2009 10:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Mihm? hahahahaha

Mihm Should be under “Been there done that” list.

David Lee is a perfect replacement for Scali. Would love that.

Iverson too rich for us? Ha! We are too good for him.

Does Robert Swift come with a banjo?

Grant Hill is a class act but I want someone younger but would take him.

I want Gomes back and he ain’t coming back.

Let’s just bring “Ewill”!!!! out of retirement. His teeth are perfectly fixed but still has the grin and he loves Boston.

basically what ive seen, hear and read is that he has a ton of potential, a nice shot, alot of energy, great hands, wants to go to the rim every time, good man defender.

the negatives are he doesnt rotate fast enough, is immature at times on the court, has no post moves, and is thin. those are all things that can be fixed however

i also heard he’d be here this summer and if it holds true im excited to see what this kid can do

couldnt find the one that was posted.

i did find a different quote though: QUOTE
Summer plans
Boston, Orlando, Oklahoma City, Utah, Indiana, and New Jersey-Philadelphia (dual squad) are slated for summer league action at the RDV Sportsplex in Orlando from July 6-10. Each team is expected to play five games in the league, which is closed to the public. Boston didn’t have a summer league team last year and last played in the one in Orlando in 2004. Potential Celtics summer league players include Gabe Pruitt, Bill Walker, and J.R. Giddens and 2008 second-round pick Semih Erden.

the other post said erdens contract was up with his euro team and would be playing here this summer

Here's a plan.

Zaza Pachulia backs up Perkins for the MLE. Re-sign Davis for 3-4 million. Get Matt Barnes to back up Pierce and let Eddie House spell Ray Allen. Backup to Rondo? Ronnie Price or Tyrone Lue. I don’t think Antonio McDyess wants to play for Boston. Anyone could have seen Boston was a better shot for him to get a ring than Detroit and he passed it up, so I don’t think he wants to be a Celtic.

You’ve got Marbury on the No, thanks list, yet there is no-one ranked higher than him that’s realistically attainable.

Felton and Sessions are the only PGs on the list, and both of them are restricted and likely to be matched at the MLE.

killer list

quinton ross is a good defender, 6’6’, 38% from 3, and could be had for the 1.5 mil exception. I really like Rodney Carney and Hakim Warrick but I don’t know if the c’s could make an offer that their respective teams won’t match.

McDyess would be the perfect backup big, Jason Collins would only demand the minimum.

Of course scal, ta, giddens could get us Andris Nocioni, he’s be a great 6th man.

Jeff, you’re next list should be what the c’s should target in a trade with their expiring deals, i believe the scal/ta/jr contracts would equal a player making 8-9 million. could the c’s reaquire posey?

by LooseCannon on May 28, 2009 11:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i’d add james singleton to the list, the ex-clipper is a good defender like his ex-teammate quinton ross, only he’s 6’8.

by lowfatalbob on May 28, 2009 11:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'd add Kleiza to the list as well....

He was quite impressive in the Nuggets playoff games. The timely 3pt shots remind me a bit of Posey.

by orb on May 28, 2009 11:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The worst thing DA could do....

Is wait toolong as what he did last yr when the Posey negotiations dragged a bit so much so that Danny was left with nothing on the table that he would have liked..(he didn’t liked Barnes nor Birdman so he passed on them and took …Gulped POB!!!). I sure hope DA keeps his blackberry busy right from the get go so he ends up with nothing to show as the worst possible thing he can do is stand pat with the line up he’s got right now….fill in your needs DA and bring on banner 18!!!!!

Great list, Jeff. Blazer fan checking in.

Channing Frye is NOT a guy you want in Celtic green. He lost the aggression and inside play that made him successful in New York… if you like big men who can’t rebound or play defense and hoist up 22-footers, he’s your guy.

Just on the other guys… Felton is not in the “Will He take the MLE” class. He is an incredibly inefficient scorer and not a great playmaker.

Fearthesword.com: "There is no doubt that the long layoff, combined with the ease of the first two rounds had the Cavaliers a bit tired in the 4th quarter."

Iverson may be too rich for us? Yet Andre Miller makes the "can he still play" list?

I can’t believe Iverson still has people fooled. What more evidence does anyone need that he’s over-hyped and over the hill? How many more teams have to improve once he vacates? Undersized ball hog and all-around numb skull who sucks the life out of teammates and forces his teams to play an ugly, losing brand of hoops. I didn’t want him 3 years ago, and certainly don’t want him now.

by Cousin It on May 29, 2009 1:35 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

AI might retire if he doesn't start

or so he says – so I figure he’s going to want starter money and I would assume we’d pass on him for those reasons (unless he changes his tune) – I imagine him landing someplace like Charlotte

Miller has been great, but I’ve been waiting for him to get old for years now, and he fits the mold of a guy that could age ungracefully – but I could be wrong (in fact, I’m sure I’m wrong about something, I just don’t know what)

Trade Options

Like lowfatalbob wrote I’d like to see a list of players that you think the Celtics might target in a trade using the expiring contracts that the C’s have (not Ray Allen). Unlike some of the other posters I’m really interested in Allen Iverson as instant offense off the bench. I think Wilcox, Gooden and Parker should be upgraded from the can they still play section

by Evantime34 on May 29, 2009 1:54 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

might be hard

favorites

My number 1 favorite is RASHEED WALLACE!!! let baby walk and make the best possible offer to get Rasheed. Some coaxing by Kg and Pierce and Allen couldn’t hurt.

Next I go with Matt Barnes

We are allready an awesome team. We are only one or two good players from a championship. We allready have a chance at the title next year if healthy, but adding Rasheed Wallace and Matt Barnes would put us over the top.

I think a center like Rasheed is our top priority, because Perk’s shoulder acts up.
Matt Barnes would be nice to fill the Posey roll, but its not as important as a center because Pierce plays forty minutes in the playoffs anyway. The most overrated need is a backup point guard. We won the title with Sam Cassell on the verge of retirement as our back up PG, and we still have House. Rondo does fine playing 48 min during playoffs and im fine with house and or pruitt as back up.

by ben on May 29, 2009 2:11 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Chris Anderson
Rasheed Wallace
Trevor Ariza
Antonio McDyess
Leon Powe

If the Celts sign two of those players (plus Powe for 2 mil over 2 years) they will win the championship next year. Case Closed. Probably don’t have enough money for two, but at least one of those top four, and then a couple scrubs…

HEAR ME OUT

Gerald Green a 1st Round Draft Pick who could potentially be in this years upcoming draft is available. G$ averaged 10 ppg in his sophomore season out of Gulf Shores HS. He is 6’8 athletic and has been compared to Tracy McGrady since arriving in the NBA. Give the guy another chance…let him Bill Walker and JR and even Tony Allen fight for the back up SF position. I guess I have green eyes when it comes to certain topics but I really really like Gerald. And if you Celtics fans remember he said he did not want to leave Boston and liked it here.
PLEASE DANNY BRING BACK G$!!!!

Secondly, I know a lot of you do not want to hear this but Big Baby is prime trade bait right now. Sign and trade Glen Davis along with another player Giddens? and get a solid veteran “Big Man” for the frontcourt. This might be a long shot and I doubt he would want to be the back up center but Marcus Camby?

Lastly, another guy I really like is Ike Diago. He plays a lot like Big Al in the post…if youve watched him carefully, he really does have a good low post game. I think if we were to go after him we could get him fairly cheap and reasonable. CELTICBASKETBALL= D E F E N S E…I really think taking a shot at Sean Williams from the NJ Nets would be well worth it. You get him at a low cost and give him a shot. Boston really is one of those places that can change a players attitude. He is a freakish athlete who LOVES blocking shots and playing defense. Under KG’s wing I really think this kid Williams could be special.

Let me know what you guys think. And remember….BLEED GREEN!!!!!!!!!!

No $ for G$

Green got a big opportunity in Dallas this year. I got to see a few games on League Pass this year. Carlisle pretty much gave him the green light (so to speak), even starting him. He had a couple of decent scoring games, but still has no basketball IQ. You could actually see the frustration on his teammates’ faces every time he shot the ball. Actually, Dallas’s strong finish to the season was partly due to benching him. I know he’s young and I’d love to see him reach his potential, but unfortunately I think we’ve seen the best of him. Hopefully, I’m wrong!

I like your thoughts on Diago and Williams, though. Both could be solid bench players, although I’d take a healthy Powe over both of them.

ARIZA?

I can’t provide a link for you, but I have many friends in LA who have told me repeatedly that Ariza hates the Celtics and so I can’t conceive of him playing here. He’s UCLA/Lakers thru and thru. While I know PP was a Lakers fan growing up, he has only played for the C’s. I don’t think any comparison is valid there.

Ariza was not only a Lakers fan pre NBA but then he was humiliated by the C’s in last year’s Finals Game 6……..and I loved every minute of it.

Don’t look for him to wear green. Might as well take him off the list cuz if elected, he will not serve.

by DrD on May 30, 2009 12:08 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If the Celtics are going to overspend, do it for Marcin Gortat.

Gortat is probably now out of the Celtics price-range. But if there’s anyone they should overspend for, it should be him.

Not only is he what they need at center, but he’s young, aggressive, and apparently has a good attitude. Perkin’s questionable shoulder makes a backup big man the number one need. If Gortat came here, not only would he improve the Celtics, but he’d weaken the Magic, who may now be the conference team to beat.

I’d love to have Rasheed Wallace, but he’s getting older and crankier fast. Gortat won’t even have reached his peak when Wallace is long gone.

by no kidding on May 30, 2009 1:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Gortat vs Rasheed

It may be true Gortat reaches his peak when Wallace is long gone, but that makes it harder to sign Gortat. Gortat will want a long contract and will take the most money he can get. Rasheed allready has lots of money, and might be willing to take a lesser contract for a chance to win a ring with Kg Pierce and Jesus. Also I am pretty sure Rasheed will have a better year than Gortat next year, and next year is all that matters when you’re trying to get Banner 18, if Gortat’s name was Russell then it would be different. Gortat won’t be starting a dynasty where he plays, but I agree he is an awesome player. Not only is he good, how “pimp” would it be to say our back up center is an olympic boxer. How’s that for intimidation when someone comes down on poor kendricks shoulder. Gortat would be fun to have, but I think Rasheed is the answer.

by ben on May 31, 2009 3:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve gotta believe Danny has Sheed and McDyess on the top of his list. If that falls through, I’d lean towards ZaZa or Chris Wilcox. Gortat seems like 2009 version of Jerome James to me for some reason…

As for swingmen, I’d take a look at Josh Childress. I didn’t realize his Euro deal was up and he could be an ideal 6th man for the next couple years. Then you got guys like Desmond Mason and Matt Barnes who would be solid contributors at SF. However, if Dhantay Jones can be had for the LLE, that needs to get done.

As much as Grant Hill seems like a logical choice, I gotta believe he is over the hill at this point. And it would be nice not to have to have this backup SF search every year until Paul retires.

Bench

The celtics might have the most talented roster in the league, young and old, but i think we have the same problem we had pre-KG, our talent is too spread out. Most teams these days have pretty small rotations (7-9). We gotta remember that we can only play 5 players at a time so having all this talent sitting on the bench is a waste. Look at what happened when we traded numerous players for one big one, KG: we took the title. I believe if we did the same thing with our bench, it would greatly increase our chances.
We need to keep the strong defense in our starting 5, but i wouldn’t mind having a couple of good scorers on our bench.
If we sign Rasheed and keep Scalabrine, that’s two shooting big men that will be able to spread the defense very well. Definitely keep Powe for defense off the bench and rebounding. I wouldn’t mind seeing Big Baby go into a trade; his shooting ability isn’t really needed and it would give Powe more time, and us more rebounding. As far as guards go, we have House and now Hudson, two very good scorers. MAYBE keep Tony Allen, because besides Rondo he’s really our only guard with a good defensive game.
Now we would be able to get some quick points from our bench if needed with two 3-point shooting big men, and two sharp shooting guards. And Powe is essential to take pressure off Perk. Now on the block we have Davis, Moore, Walker, Giddens, Pruitt, Marbury, and maybe T Allen. They could be useful in a trade or they could give us more salary room to sign a vet as a 6th man and replace what Posey was because House just can’t seem to handle it. It could be in the form of a back-up SF or another guard to back-up Rondo. Even a good Center would be welcome if we could find one.
In conclusion we would be signing Rasheed and dropping/trading most of our bench to find talent in 1 player rather than 6, so our best back-ups would get more playing and give us many more scoring opportunities.

I forgot to mention that Chris Anderson would be a nice addition. I think he’d be more beneficial than Davis, but if we’re still interested in signing Sheed then probably Powe or Scal would have to go as well.
