The Boston Celtics announced today that forward Leon Powe underwent successful ACL revision reconstruction with microfracture and cartilage repair at New England Baptist Hospital this morning. The surgery was preformed by Celtics Team Physician, Dr. Brian McKeon and was assisted by Dr. Paul Weitzel and Dr. John Richmond. No timetable has been set for Powe’s return.

Good news!!
Hopefully the Celtics resign hiim and he recovers well.
I wish Powe a good recovery
And I’m glad that his surgery went well, I want to see Powe back in a Celtics jersey next year!
As mentioned in the forums, "microfracture" is a scary word...

yep. very scary.
When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"
microfracture might not have been absolutely necessary
microfracture surgery tries to replace the cartalige lining the bones inside the knee.. given that he didnt seem to have any major problems with his knee till he tore his acl it is quite possible it was done just to try to improve hat wasnt too bad in there.. rather than to rescue the knee like is the case for so many atheletes who slowly wear away their lining and suffer pain/discomfort and have this procedure without needing an acl recon due to years of play with meniscus tears etc..
i hope this was the case.. i am no surgeon but this is what i have read..
good luck LP!
timetable
according to the internets, here’s what it takes to recover from microfracture surgery
Weight bearing is usually limited for 6 to 8 weeks, then gradually progressed over time. It may take 4 to 6 months before one can return to sport activities, and even longer to return to competition. Professional athletes may be sidelined up to a year after microfracture surgery.
so bare minimum 6 months puts him back around training camp but my unscientific observation is that it typically takes a year to get back to “normal” — and by normal I mean 90% of what they once were capable of
bottom line, I’m not expecting anything from him next year and if he gets a contract (which I hope he does) it won’t be for much

Best Wishes for a Speedy Recovery
It will be interesting to see if the C’s, or any other team, offer him a contract — I’d really like to see him back, but I imagine it will depend a lot on what other off-season moves are made and what kind of roster flexibility we have. Leon has shown such dedication to rehabbing and an ability to beat these types of injuries already, I’m hopeful we’ll see his power, positioning and effort on the court next year and for many years in the future.
