Pitino In Running For Kings Job
Just thought I'd share some news about a ghost from our past. Pitino back in the NBA? Good luck with that Sactown.
Rick Pitino has emerged as a candidate for the Sacramento Kings’ coaching job, multiple sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Pitino has communicated his interest in a possible NBA return to Kings ownership, sources say, and one league official describes the Maloof family as “intrigued.”
To those that lost their lunch just seeing that picture, I apologize.

Pitino Is A College Coach
He should stay where he is.

Doesn't he have an NBA track record for everyone to see?
Sacramentos not content with being the worst team in the league this year (my apologizes to the Clippers)? They want to be the worst team even longer?

Pitino
He is a great college coach and should stay where he is. However, if he comes back to the pros as only a coach, he might be OK. He did pretty well with the Knicks in that capacity. However, if a mediocre pro coach is what the Maloofs want, there are far safer and far cheaper ways of obtaining a coach.

Nutzo
They’d have to be crazy to even be ‘intrigued’ at the prospect of working with this franchise ruiner…Pitino set the Celtics back 10 years.
Anyone ever read the book about Red, “LET ME TELL YOU A STORY”? Red didn’t have such nice feelings about Rick…

Sac wants another ex-Celtic to coach?
Didn`t they learn their lesson with Bill Russell?
{Don`t get me wrong, I loved Russ beyond beyond words….but his time in Sac-town was not pretty}

When?
It must be a short stint as I have totally forgotten that Russell was once their coach.

Russell coached Sacramento
He was 17-41 in 1987-88

Spurs fan from Chicago and C’s blog lurker here…
I agree on the point that Pitino is a great college coach…but, with all due respect, the man has never done anything in the pros. He’s failed a few times. Knicks and Celtics. This is strictly a ‘Name’ move.

Gah.
You know, Sacto has a good fanbase who don’t deserve a franchise killer like Pitino. I’d hire almost any unemployed NBA coach over Pitino.

Jeff
I don’t know how to give Jeff a TP, but your last line about losing a lunch is an absolute classic!
by MurphyHOF on May 7, 2009 9:37 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
you can do a Rec
they aren’t as cool as TP’s but at the bottom of the post there’s an option to Rec (or recommend) a post
you can do the same to comments
I believe if something gets enough Rec, it gets highlighted somehow

Pitino isn’t a bad coach. But he was the worst GM in the history of the league. If they keep Petrie to make the personnel decisions, it could work out for the Kings.

What has Sacramento done to deserve this sentence?
But then coaching the Kings is not a job, its a sentence. So fair and square.

The Problem with Pitino
He’s never satisfied. He’s got yet another great college job…but that’s not enough…he apparently wants to go back to the NBA. Maybe he’d agree to just coach for awhile — but eventually that wouldn’t be enough for him and he’ll start to let it be known that he wants the GM job — and that’s something he’s totally unqualified for.
On the other hand it would certainly liven up a franchise with almost nothing going for it right now….
So I hope the Kings hire him…

Great...
Do the Kings have any good young players we can trade old washed up players with injury issues for…..

Pitino as coach and Isiah for GM. The Kings would always be entertaining.

Pitino is an alternative.
But if I were the Maloofs, I’d seek others.
Such as burning their arena to the ground and gouging their eyes out with six-inch metal spikes.
It would be less painful then hiring Pitino.

i hope this is one wild rumor. he can’t coach a bunch of men making more money than he does. let him coach the kids who don’t mind him treating them like kids.

Blake Griffin - Tim Duncan
Can’t believe nobody made this connection. Pitino gave the excuse that he thought Boston was going to get Duncan.
Sactown, 13 years later, has the chance to get the next sure thing, a franchise big man.
And if Sac doesn’t get the first pick, when it all goes south, Pitino can say he took the job thinking he was going to get Blake Griffin!

Griffin looks like he's good...
… but he’s no Tim Duncan.

was going to say the same thing
if anything, this draft looks weak and there’s no slam-dunk future superstar in it like Duncan
that said, he did pick the team with the best chance in the lottery – so of course they’ll finish 3rd and pick a player that will be out of the league in 5 years

Just Say No, Sacto!
I was kinda hoping that when Pitino did leave Memphis, that he would go give the Lakers a makeover.

I think Cleveland should look into hiring him.

Let's Give Rick Some Credit
The best thing that Rick Pitino did for the Celtics was to get the Waltham training facility built. That might not seem to be a big deal, but it is because of this facility that a Celtic player can practice anytime he wants. Young players with coaches can go their anytime and work on their games. Where would Perk and Al Jeff be without Waltham. The Celtics, as a team, have a place to practice and a place for conditioning and rehab. treatment. Before Waltham, the Celts would go to different colleges in the area to practice. They could only use the facilities at certain times and they sure didn’t have the conditioning equipment and everything else. At Waltham, the coaches can do their work and have the equipment they need in one place. So let’s at least thank Rick Pitino for this. In a way, it gave us Banner 17.

Good point
That is a good point you make about Pitino and the Waltham training facility, however, that is more of a managerial aspect not coaching. We won #17 because of Danny Ainge and management willing to spend money. Pitino needs to stay in college.

PITINO
This made me sick. We just recovered last year from the horrible years that he gave us, what a joke. Sacramento deserves better than Pitino. He is a great college coach and should stay a college coach. I think PJ Carlisimo, Van Gundy, Collins would all be much better choices.

Mark Jackson
Was it Mark Jackson who said Rick Pitino was the best coach he’d ever played for?
I’m pretty sure it was. I remember being shocked that he chose Pitino over coaches like Pat Riley, Larry Brown, Jerry Sloan ….

I checked, and I had bookmarked the article where Jackson said that Pitino was the best coach he played for.

Dwayne Schintzius is not walking through that door
Seriously though, this guy doesn’t know how to handle the NBA pace. We had chuckers on our team, but he wanted us to play a set offense, and our best low post player then was Tony Battie. It never made any sense whatsoever.

pitino was hoping for kentucky
rickie as we all now has a monumental ego. When calipari got the Kentucky job I’ll bet that really PO’d lil’ rick because he was no longer top dog in terms of being the most desired collegiate coach. It also made him the second best coach in KY so he may have said " screw it, let me go back to the pro’s". As we also know the Ricktator likes teaching and building and Sactown will have a high draft pick this year. I think also that Pitino sees how the league has adopted the 3 point attack that is such a big part of his style and maybe he figures the NBA is no ready to embrace his style of play again. He has a lot of good qualities but humility is not among them. Also he’s fine with young players but vets don’t buy his BS
