PP must be a role player, like everyone else

PP has not been playing well in these playoffs. Putting aside the reasons why, it's essential that the team figure out how to play him. Pierce is still valuable... but ONLY IF HE ACCEPTS HIS ROLE ON THE TEAM. He is NOT the floor leader, Rondo is. He is NOT the hero, there are no heroes. Paul is a "role player" -- like everybody else on this team. His role on offense is to get himself open for the looks that best suit him... mid-range jumpers, occasional open 3s, drives to the hoop. Don't try to create it, Paul... wait for it to happen. Just like Ray waits for his shots (and misses when he forces things). Paul must rid himself of the hero complex he seems to have, and play team ball, Celtics ball.

And PP must not be the one bringing the ball up. When he does, everything - the whole game - slows down measurably. The ball gets sticky, mostly in his hands. In these playoffs, the result has too often been either a turnover, or a Paul iso play. Sometimes his isos work, sometimes they don't. But that is not how you win games, not championship basketball.

RONDO must bring the ball up, every time if possible. Neither Paul nor Ray should be doing that. Ever (unless unavoidable). That's not their roles. When they go outside their roles, the game slows down and things go awry. Pretty soon, Rondo goes into slow-mode too, and then before you know it, the whole team is running through mud. And all that starts with... Paul, mostly.

Paul Pierce thinks of himself as "the captain". He is not and he needs to stop thinking he is. Rondo is the leader of this team. KG used to be the leader on the defensive end, but in his absense Rondo is the key on both ends of the floor. (Of course, Rondo must improve his defense on the PG he's guarding, but we're focusing on Paul now.)

If Paul cannot accept Rondo's leading role on the floor, he needs to SIT DOWN. The team had its best game when he did... and that was no coincidence. Lately, the more Paul Pierce scores, the more likely the loss.... and there is a reason for that: Paul's shooting percentages have been poor, his turnovers too high, and his overall speed too slow. So while he SEEMS to be helping the team by scoring points, he is also hurting it with the shots he misses, the turnovers he creates, and the slow play he causes. Result: loss.

Bad, slow, lazy play is contagious. Especially when it starts with the so-called "captain". When Paul is allowed to run the floor, pretty soon everybody is playing slowly and poorly. Rondo must run things, from the very FIRST play of the game... so his energy level starts high and stays that way. Then the whole team plays at THAT level... the right way.

I don't know if Doc has the nerve to do what must be done with Paul. But that's his job. So far, he's not doing it. Maybe Doc and Paul just need a vacation. At this rate, if they don't fix what must be fixed immediately... they will soon get one.

(I'm sure the PP lovers/apologists will just love this post. Whatever. The team is what should matter most.)

Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

For the Celtics to be sucessful, they need Pierce to be Pierce

They need Pierce to be the offensive superstar he is. They need him with the ball in his hand more to create shots.

Just like they need Ray to be making and taking his shots.

I love Rondo, but he is not the play you jump on to carry you. He just isn’t that good offensively. And, he hasn’t exactly been lighting it up in this series.

who has?

he led the comeback in game 1
had a triple double in game 2
noone played good in game 3
and he had KG power forward like numbers in game 4

I keep hearing the same old argument about rondo being inconsistent….um why cause he cant play perfect every night? I just want to know whos been more consistent then him in these playoffs for us? maybe perk? cause it isnt the 2 future hall of famers

I also keep hearing the only reason he isnt in the same conversation as Dwill and cp3 is inconsisteny, um no, every player this side of lebron is inconsistent. Chris paul just layed 4 eggs in the playoffs. thats consistently bad.

Not to mention, I think Rondo is leading the team in shots for this series.

Bizzaro

Everything you said is exactly how he’s played for the overwhelming majority of these playoffs, and look where it’s gotten us.

If you think about it, every time we’ve won or made a big run it’s because Paul has been aggressive. Getting to the basket. Creating easy shots for teammates. Getting to the free throw line. All great stuff and stuff we need him to do to be successful.

I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen Pierce bring the ball up in the floor on his own in this series and you know what? They’ve all led to something good.
Even Ray-Ray’s open three that barely rimmed out in game one was a great opportunity and was created by Paul having the ball in his hands.

I agree with drj1

I am a celtic fan from louisiana. Never posted here, just came to read but when I read this post and saw that most are against it I wanted to put in my opinion. My wife and son laugh at me because I scream at PP so much. Look at the end of close games. Rondo brings the ball down PP calls for the ball handles the ball to long refuses to pass to the open man drives and turns the ball over or takes a really tough shot and misses then stands there and cries about a non call while everyone else is going down the court to defend. He needs to play team ball. When he was out in game two we had great ball movement and won the game. I think what he is saying about Rondo is that we aren’t looking for him to be the main scorer but the guy driving and dishing to an open team mate and creating offense. I to think Rondo is now becoming the leader of this team. I have to say that I am very disappointed in PP and his play right now. It’s one thing to have a bad game but try to get others involved but it is another thing to have a bad game and make it worse by trying to be the hero. Just my 2cents.

Wow, crazy talk. Without Pierce the Magic waltz out of Boston last night in BLOW OUT fashion.

The guy draws foul, opens up the midrange and he DOES pass. He is the king of starting the 1-2 punch dishes that lead to either an open 3, layup or 18-footer.

You people that want him to play differently are crazy. I want Ray Ray to go off for 20+ EVERY night, but he simply can’t.

I know you guys think you know evvvvverything about basketball, so maybe you can tell me this.. If Rondo is so great right now why was Alston leaving him AS SOON AS HE GAVE UP THE BALL to come and double (especially on Pierce)?

Simple fact is this: The Celts would’ve lost in the first round if Pierce didn’t play like Pierce and wanted to be the hero. They’d be down to the Magic 2-3 or worse otherwise, they might even be out 1-4 against the Magic.

What do you all want.. ANOTHER Ray Allen?
