Team Source: "Rondo’s not going to be traded"
Nothing could have made me happier than reading those words this morning. Of course it still could be spin but I tend to believe it when he makes such a direct comment like that. Here's some more quotes:
"I think it’s unlikely," Ainge said of trading up. "It’s possible, but unlikely."
Though Ainge declined to discuss the rumors involving Rondo, a team source sniffed at the speculation involving the young floor leader, saying, "Rondo’s not going to be traded."
As for the speculation that the Celtics are trying to make moves now that will clear space for a shot at a member of 2010’s highly anticipated free agent class, Ainge said, "We’re trying to win a championship next season. That’s my goal this summer."

He didn't say he won't be he said " it's unlikely"
Chances are it won’t happen which is probably a good thing unless we are getting back a Chris Paul or Stoudemire type franchise player

amare is not a franchise player
don’t put him in the same sentence as chris paul please

maybe he is not quite there , but he is defensive toughness away from being there. The guy is one of the most efficient scorers in the league, has been on multiple All NBA teams and is only 26 years old. I would say he is pretty damn close to a franchise player if he isn’t one.

It wasn't Danny who said that
Just a point of clarification. It was “a team source”.
Though Ainge declined to discuss the rumors involving Rondo, a team source sniffed at the speculation involving the young floor leader, saying, “Rondo’s not going to be traded.”

Well, He's Got the Right Goal for the Summer
The question is, how to accomplish that goal? With a maturing team, it means bolstering the bench: good backup center, good backup point guard who defends, good wing player off the bench to give Pierce more rest.
I don’t see how Ainge can assemble championship-quality depth without trading Ray Allen. But maybe he can pull it off if Rasheed Wallace can be enticed to play for the MLE.
by Brickowski on Jun 18, 2009 7:33 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
optimal possibility
sheed or mcydess for MLE (or better yet just part of it if Mcdyess), good wing or PG with LLE and moving TA and Veal (and possibly Pruitt) as expiring deals for the position not filled by the LLE. House picks up his option and they resign Powe. maybe resign BBD if the money is right or find a S&T partner for him (if possible based on the salary matching compexities).
That’s not an overly complicated set of steps to take to improve the team. Yes, players have to agree to sign and the trading of expiring deals requires a partner but it’s more realistic than the “trade Ray/Rondo” deals floating around.
by slamtheking on Jun 18, 2009 7:43 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with this
I think it’s going to take a Ray trade, and using the MLE and LLE, and possibly trading our other expirings to fill those positions with quality players. Just don’t see filling the three needed positions with only the MLE, LLE and our other expirings.

critical night: draft night
so much wheeling and dealing (most of it is just talk, but still) happens on draft night
if Danny doesn’t make any moves that night, then we are more than likely going to see Ainge go the free agent route to fill our holes and stand pat with the starting lineup
just my opinion

there’s still a possibility BBD could be involved in a S+T later in the summer. If he asks for moe than 4 MIL a year , I think Danny will let him walk or try to trade him.

but
Roy pointed out how difficult it would be to S&T him – and I think it will be even more difficult in this market
my prediction is that Baby will be one of those guys that gets squeezed by this market (not enough teams willing to spend) and he ends up re-signing with us for a reasonable amount

I think you're probably right about that
It’s surely better to make a big move before the season starts to give everyone a chance to learn the system and get to know each others games. I still think GS is the trading partner that makes the most sense. Must get at least the following for Ray: one of (Ellis or Crawford, preferably Ellis), and one of (Jackson or Magette). I don’t think they’d throw in Turiaf. They only have one other legit big.
Then get your big using the full MLE if you can find a guy good enough. If we already had both Ellis and Jackson in hand, I’d even be comfortable grabbing yet another big with the LLE (or sign Marbury with the LLE). Would like to resign Baby too (since I’m so free and easy with Wyc’s money).

hmmm...now I'm scared
Prior to this I’d been shrugging the Rondo rumors aside. Noe that I’ve heard a bona fide quote from Ainge saying they’re not trading him, I’m a little more scared that they are.

Trading Rondo...
makes no sense unless you get a player like Chris Paul or Deron Williams in return. Or maybe Derrick Rose.

Johny Flynn?
They were talking on WEEI yesterday about Ainge being in love with Flynn not Evans. Supposedly last year Danny and Doc alluded to the fact that “A guard in the tourney that would start for us right now”… and by process of elimination it had to be Flynn.

this quote makes me nervous about the draft
One NBA executive: “I’ll just tell you this is the worst draft in decades. People are going to get excited about guys. But this is a terrible draft. Guys are going to screw up big time.” He meant his peers. “A number of my colleagues are warming up to it,” Mr. Sunshine continued. “I think they’re making a big mistake.”

Totally agree with that comment. I really don’t want any part of this draft.
Just leave the starters alone, stay out of the dumpsters and let’s add two or three good veterans.

this draft
It’s starting to get underrated. I think there are a few stars out there.

Now that Ainge has been Outbid
For the services of Amare Stoudemire, he sounds like he will peruse the FA market instead. This to me is unfortunate, because we have a solid chance of getting a guy that can be a very solid NBA player and maybe even a star in this draft.

Exactly
I fully concur. Unless somebody is trading us a top-five pick for Tony (haha) I want no part of this draft until we select a foreign player at #58.

I'd buy a pick
maybe in the 2nd round if someone slips
but the 1st round guys have guaranteed contracts (see JR Giddens) and might not even be worth the hassle

I keep hearing trade R. Allen, Trade Rondo. who’s going to score the points in Ray’s place and be a good teamate. Just because we trade for a point guard does not mean he is good for this team….PAT ATTENTION (we have not had a good point guard in twenty years) . The point guard can be good for someone else but not good for us. DUMB…DUMB
Why not sign Marcin Gortat for 5 or 6mil. He’s young he’s already 6’11 not 6’7 likes to play in the paint…can spell either Garnett or Perk for long periods of time. If winning is what’s important, there it is. Where is the money going to com from…Big Baby wants upwards of 5mil. He wont get it but thats what he wants. Big Baby never will be 6.11and he still has to learn to play in the paint….remember play defence and rebound. Thats what Doc wants him to work on this summer. Gortat does these things already. Throw in McDyees let the kids play and we have a championship.
Of course we need to get rid of T. Allen, Scal. Mikki Moore, and hope Mr. House opts out of his contract. Our problem is not with the starting five but the bench.

Good news.
I hope it means that nobody from the starting five (like Ray) gets traded this year. That’s why I like Ainge’s last quote of the news, since it logically means that he is focused on next year first.

Not what happens in 2011, or 5 years from now. IT’s all about getting that number 18 this coming season. SO if you wanna worry about that, come back on 2011. Unless, its going to be improving our team more than what it is now, let alone our starting 5, no one in the starting 5 will be traded.
by thatswhatshesaid23 on Jun 18, 2009 9:48 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Couldn,t agree more. When healthy we have the best starting 5 in the league. Without question. More importanly, the starting 5 is the best “team” in the league because they each have clearly defined roles that do not over lap. “TEAM” is why we were able to still be soooo competitive with a top five player in the league out of the lineup.

in short, keep rondo. good pgs are in short supply and he has the potential to be great.
by nazzbo on Jun 18, 2009 9:50 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
With the big 3 aging, Rondo is the only other person on that roster with the potential to be a major superstar in the league. In addition to his playing ability, once the big three are gone, as the roster currently stands, Rondo will be the only person on that roster that can sell jersey’s and other Celtics merchandise. In addition, the kid is just flat out fun to watch play. He will always be able to fill the seats. Trading Rondo borders on lunacy. He is the future of the franchise.
by bigjohnson34st on Jun 18, 2009 10:10 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Rondo is very good,
bordering on great. The Celtics need to sign him to a (well deserved) extension this summer, somewhere in the $10-13 million/year for three years range (ala Andrew Bynum). It won’t handcuff the C’s too bad and it will keep Rajon feeling respected.
Pay him, pay him, pay him.
The Celtics will regret it for YEARS if Rondo falls through their fingers. He has flaws, sure, like all other basketball players. His strengths can’t be taught and his weaknesses can and will be improved.
by busterjonez on Jun 18, 2009 10:20 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Now that’s a nice idea. I’d be happy to pay Rondo more to get him on a shorter contract. Give him a max or near max contract but limit the offer to three years.
I’m a fan of that.

Not so fast...Danny is a "Wheeler-Dealer"
He loves making moves, it`s in his blood!
Last year, no moves…season ends badly.
Two years ago, major moves…season ends with a parade
Make no mistake, Danny will be making moves this summer!
Afterall, he`s got Ray`s $20M expiring contract burning a hole in his pocket.
Judge him by what he does…not by what he says.

I trust him to make a good move with Ray and wouldn't care really.
I don’t believe he or anyone else inside the Celtics organization wants to move Rondo. Way too much talent and potential.

Danny Could Still Make A Big Move
But this should put to rest any fears that he’d deprioritize next season to get younger and more talented for the future. I think the subtext of his comment is “Ray and Rondo aren’t going anywhere unless it gets us high-level talent ready to deliver NOW in search of banner #18.”

This Draft
Strong drafts are never as strong as you think they are, and weak drafts are never as weak as you think they are.
Blake Griffin will be a decent pro, and Rubio can become a star. I’m not so sure about Thrabeet.
The thing about this draft is that after the first few picks, most of the interesting players are guards: Curry, Evans, Flynn, Holiday, Jennings, Lawson, Collison, Maynor … the list goes on. The big people in this draft are not particularly impressive.
But I do see some interesting players projected to go in the second round. In fact picks 30-60 will be almost as talented as picks 5-30. Players I like that are projected to go in the second round include Josh Heytvelt, Jon Brockman, A.J. Price, Dante Cunningham, Robert Dozier and Brookline’s own Jeff Adrian, who reminds me a little of Jared Dudley. There appear to be some good international 2nd rounders as well, although I haven’t followed them as closely as I have in previous years.
So yes, if you are looking for size it’s a weak draft. But I think it will produce a dozen or so good pros anyway, mostly among the guards.

Anyone could be a star
I’ll go on record and say that Rubio won’t be a star. I can’t wait to watch him play a guy like Rondo should be very entertaining.

I’ll predict he will become a star in the right setting. Rubio is Jose Calderon with excellent defense. Actually, he’s better than Calderon on offense too: taller and better at getting to the rim.
If Rubio plays for D’Antoni he will become a star right away.

it would not surprise me if Ainge tries to trade up or buy a 1st round pick in the 20’s. He would take someone based on potential to try and stockpile some more chips for the next big deal he could / would have to make in a couple of years. Earl Clark is a pick that comes to mind.
by celty86 on Jun 18, 2009 12:25 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I’m not impressed with the 20’s in this draft unless DeJuan Blair slips.
Guys like Budinger and Hansborough just aren’t good enough. BBD could play rings around both of those guys.

I just hope they don’t trade into the draft. This draft is terrible. Blake Griffin is going to be a good NBA player. After him, there will no doubt be by shere numbers a few good players. But there are not any stars in this draft and a ton of duds. Good year not to have a first round pick.
by John70 on Jun 18, 2009 1:17 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
every year people say it’s a terrible draft and every year good players come out of it. Ainge may want to take a chance on someone late who he can use as a chip for the future. i trust his talent evaluation skills.

Wasn’t Danny trading into the late 1st round of a crummy draft with a pick from the following year’s supposedly deep draft that netted us Rondo? I swear almost every year we hear what a bad draft it is or how after the top 5 or top 3 (or top 1) it’s a bad draft.
I’m not really looking forward to a draft pick, but I won’t be upset if Danny goes for one (assuming he doesn’t trade 3/5 of the starting lineup to “net” it).
