Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Celtics guard Ray Allen has expressed a desire for a contract extension, league executives say, but that isn’t happening in Boston . . .

Stephon Marbury is telling friends he believes that the Celtics want to re-sign him.

It's Adrian Wojnarowski...

… so take this with a massive grain of salt.

If true...

a) I would welcome Starbury back. I was impressed with the discipline he showed this season as a teammate, and with the restraint (at several poignant moments, too much of it) he showed in regards to shot selection. With a preseason under his belt, I think he could be a valuable contributor.

b) I don’t see Ray getting an extension of the variety that he would be interested in, so there may be some substance to the trade rumors that keep cropping up. I can’t believe that the Celtics would trade Ray for pieces and an early draft pick and actually keep the player selected with the choice. If we end up with an early pick, whether by trading Ray or gasp Rondo or Perk, I’m assuming it’s because an impact player is on the way to Beantown.

Good News

1. I would like them to resign Marbury.
2. The Celtics are being smart not signing Ray to an extension even if he’ll take less money. The Celtics want Ray to be a expiring contract in case he gets hurt or isn’t effective anymore. In either case they can trade him to a cash strapped team

his expiring deal is too valuable

if we don’t make a move with it, I’m sure the C’s will be willing to talk about resigning him after the season

it is only smart for the C’s to express interest in Marbury, he’s a decent fall back option or safety-net signing

Portland trying to dump Sergio – any interest here?

I'd like to extend my contract too. And I don't even have one.

As for Marbury, at this point, Ainge should pretty much know who’s the better option, Marbury or Pruitt. We’re no longer in a playoff stretch, so he can make whatever cold-hearted cut he needs to between the two of them. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Pruitt he keeps (a taller, better defender to pair with House).

Memo to Ray & Steph...

It really would not be wise to get too comfortable—such as buying a new home—in Boston.

I hope this is either more misinformation or hardline bargaining tactics...

A lot of people, including possibly Celtics management, have forgotten that it took a record turn around to get us back to relevance. Now they believe elite players are there for the asking.

I'm not sure I understand your point.

Why would the Celtics be interested in extending Ray at this point?

by Fafnir on Jun 20, 2009 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Because

he helped add another championship banner to Boston. I believe that is a major point. I can see 2 or 3 more titles if this group is kept together, decent support/backups are brought in and the starters stay healthy. The third option relys heavily on the second…better support than Moore & Marbury.

I'm all for resigning Ray, but there is little incentive to do so....

until after this season. Right now his expiring contract is our best trading piece. Also we should see how he holds up, SGs fall off a cliff around this age after all.

There is no reason to think he wouldn’t be open to coming back after playing out the last year on his deal.

Two or three more titles if this group is kept together?

I don’t think so! Not with this core group. A good chance at one maybe two. You have to remember, this group was brought together for an immediate impact (mission accomplished) and to have the aging stars contracts aligned to expire in three consecutive years so they can be shopped in the last year of their contract for a younger star. “Shopped for a younger star” That is the key to help keep this thing running at a high level beyond next year.

because danny acted like a complete moron last summer, and this season,

The Lakers are champs. Phil Jackson has more titles than Red. Kobe is only two short of Michael.

Now what? we are forced to trust Danny??? yep.

well good luck figuring out what this disfunctional goofball will do given the last two summers. Schizophrenia is a real possibility with ol’ Danny boy.

by wahz on Jun 20, 2009 12:33 AM EDT reply actions

Yea what a moron Danny is. He only brought us our 1st championship in 22 years of nothingness.

He drafted : Big AL, Leon Powe, Delonte West, Ryan Gomes, Rajon Rondo without even having a top 10 pick. He clearly has no idea what he’s doing…….

Sign neither right now

Don’t sign Ray now. His expiring contract is so attractive right now. For a player of his age, if he falls off the cliff in terms of production or get hurt for the season, he is still valuable in a trade.

If he doesn’t do either, Celtics can then either resign him (at a lower price) or use him as a sign and trade bait.

As for Marbury, he didn’t play well enough to get another contract.
