Rondo Was Fined For Being Tardy
Ainge was on WEEI earlier and revealed some interesting info on Rondo from this past year.
On Wednesday, Celtics General Manager Danny Ainge revealed on WEEI’s Dennis & Callahan Show Rondo had been fined for being late to games last season. Ainge deemed the tardiness "unacceptable."
Remember, it was just yesterday that Ainge made these comments:
“He showed up late for a playoff game so we’re going to trade him. None of those things is true. We love the kid and we think he’s got a very bright future. I don’t anticipate any trades happening this offseason involving any of our core players.”
“The notion that we might be trading him for some reason other than we think that we could be better or trading any player because of some reason (like) his contract,” Ainge said. “I’ve heard speculation of we’re dissatisfied with him or his attitude. That stuff is so false.”
I'm not sure how serious this is in the grand scheme of things. Certainly if you put the two quotes together it sounds like they are concerned with his tardiness but not enough to trade him.
But the timing of this revelation is very interesting. Why put this out there now? Is Ainge setting us up for some big news in the next few days?
I hereby dub this "Tardigate" - feel free to use that.
Update: See more of Danny's comments here.

Yeah, the timing more than the fine, says a lot about Rondo's future as a Celtic...
… or it’s just another quote fueling the false speculations about Rondo being traded.
Frankly, I think that Ainge knew the impact his quote was going to have so I think it was made on purpose to prepare the fans to hear that Rondo is going to get traded soon (maybe on draft night?).
I mean, this kind of team rules and private stories is usually revealed when the guy gets fined during the season, but not 3 (or more) months later, when rumors about the guy getting traded are popping all over the Internet.

Or he is using this to drive down the contract demands
If he was trying to move him, he would build Rondo up now for other teams, then let this slip out after the trade.

I don’t know. I’ve listened to Ainge’s comments and they’re a pretty accurate assessment of Rondo’s game as it stands today, which is flawed – on and off the court.
The comments could be targeted to drive down contract price – as it should be; no way Rondo’s a max talent – or they could be preparatory for a trade.
by CoachBo on Jun 24, 2009 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right, and Ainge may also be trying to humble Rondo by sending a not-so-subtle message to cut the bs unless he wants to end up on some 20 win team somewhere.

I don't think Ainge is lieing in his comments
I just think they are for Rondo and his agent to understand Rondo is not as valuable as they believe and want in a new contract.

What are these contract demands?
Ainge said Rondo’s not a max player at this point in time. Rondo said the same thing on the radio. Where does everybody get these max contract ideas from?

Don’t know if you listened to Simmons’ podcast with Chad Ford from yesterday, but they discussed this very same thing – if stories suddenly start coming out like this, rest assured, he’s going to be traded. Why else would Ainge publicize this now? He’s preparing the public for the move.
by MetroGlobe on Jun 24, 2009 11:06 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Depends...
While I agree with you that this could be a precursor to his being traded, on second thoughts I don’t think it makes sense. Why drive down the value of your commodity just before you trade? It is more likely that they are driving down his value with these stories because they want to keep him here at a cheaper price.

Rondo will get Rondo'd
Unfortunately, I hate to agree with Felger (Felgee, your wife is hot), but where there’s smoke, there’s fire. I’m prepping myself to welcome Nash, Parker, Gay, Hamilton, Rubio or anyone else to Boston. Sorry, Rajon…it was nice while it lasted!

Ainge also points out that basically these little things are NOT a big deal to him
he didn’t sound like there are any serious carryover effects from his lateness.

Nothing's going to happen tomorrow
I’ve just listened to the Weei on demand broadcast of the Ainge interview. You have to listen closely to catch all the nuances, but there is no doubt in my mind that Ainge has not been presented with any deal that he likes enough to part with Rondo and that it would take a no brainer one to do so. He sees Rondo’s flaws, which he freely recognizes, as part of his natural maturity and development process both as a player and person. Reading any thing else into what he’s saying is overreaching
by Ainge wantabe on Jun 24, 2009 11:18 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Ah, I don’t really agree with that and I’ve listened to them as well. It seems pretty clear that Ainge isn’t happy with the direction Rondo’s heading. I have never seriously thought Ainge would move Rondo, but I do think now that he would – once the right deal is reached. That hasn’t happened, but I heard nothing in his comments to suggest that such a thing is a long way off, either.
by CoachBo on Jun 24, 2009 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Disagree
The only reason Ainge would come out and kind of bad mouth Rondo is if he’s close to a deal and he wants the media to soften the blow of losing Rondo. If he plays Rondo as a malcontent and then doesn’t trade him immediately his trade value goes down
by Evantime34 on Jun 24, 2009 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
This is how I see it too
If he plays Rondo as a malcontent and then doesn’t trade him immediately his trade value goes down
Ainge better be darned sure that the deal is in essence sealed and delivered before publicly criticizing and thus lowering the value of Rondo. I don’t like him airing this dirty laundry about Rondo in public, no matter whether it’s true or not. Just not good business to devalue your asset if you truly intend to trade him. You never know, the deal might fall through, and then you’ve already devalued the guy.
Not good strategy, Mr. Ainge.

Tardiness isn't the issue.
C’mon, how many young guys these days take punctuality seriously? Rondo will either learn his lesson or keep getting fined. I’ve heard of regular behavior far worse than this that has been tolerated by an NBA franchise.
If punctuality is a serious problem, I strongly suggest the C’s send Rondo to Basic Training over the summer. Something about exposure to the armed forces that helps people learn the value of being on time

I see your point, but...
Everyone who wants to believe that nothing will happen with Rondo has made good points, but the main questions are why be so outward with the comments and point out his flaws and why now? Look, Danny has had negotiations with plenty of players before Rondo, including Pierce, Garnett, etc. He has never been this forward with his comments and critiques. The very idea that he is putting this info out there to drive Rondo’s price down makes it even worse. How do you think a move like that would affect the relationship between the player and team, that is, to purposely and vindictively drive a player’s price down? This relationship is already headed south and I do not think it can be saved. Regardless of when it happens, Rondo is gone…

Ainge is trying to light a fire under RR’s butt and give him a little perspective on his true development thus far as well as a point in the right direction if he wants to be a “max” contract kind of guy.

Ainge also said that Rondo is not an elite PG
And I agree with this statement. While talented, Rondo’s presence on the floor oftne kills us becuase of his lack of shooting ability. Put it this way; there are instances where we are better off having Eddie House (a guy who is not a true PG and can’t penetrate or distribute) on the floor instead of Rondo. You wouldn’t be able to say this about any good PG but Rondo.

"LateGate"
Danny`s looking long-term.
When KG & Paul are gone in a few years, and Rondo being paid $$$….is Rondo the kind of guy he wants as the “team leader”?
One who younger players look to for leadership…a guy who is quiet, stubborn, late?

Maybe Ainge is just sending a message to Rondo
Rondo is the starting point guard on a contending team. He already has one ring and has a good chance to get another next year. That is a pretty good place to be. He is going into his free agent year. Getting sent off to Memphis or Detroit would be a very bad thing for Rondo. Maybe Ainge has no real intention of trading him but is nonetheless aggrivated by his maturity level. So, Ainge is putting out the trade rumors as a way of telling Rondo “you better grow up because right now we are afraid to give you long term money and we are not afraid to trade you.”

Is ainge trying to prove to Rondo and his agent what his value is
Look here http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/extras/celtics_blog/2009/06/spears_latest_d.html
Ainge told a GM that he won’t trade Rondo.
the only logical explanation would be ainge using these proposals to tell Rondo and his agent, listen we could wait till next summer and match any deal you get or lets extend you now with comparison to these players.

no trade, just sending a message
I think Rondo’s performance with KG out, especially the triple doubles in the Bulls series, went to his head, and Ainge is trying to bring him back down to earth and push him to improve his game. sounds like rondo may be more focused to ask for max money that to improve his jump shot this summer. Ainge knows that it’s highly unlikely, unless he can pull a Gasol, that he can get good enough value for rondo, so why not light a fire under him? His assessment was very truthful, rondo hurt the team and played poorly in the magic series on both ends of the floor. If he was more mature and focused we got have beaten LA for #18 this year.
by hpantazo on Jun 24, 2009 1:03 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think – either Danny already has a trade in the works and he is trying to sour fans on a player who we all just watched practically average a triple double in 13 playoff games, so as to reduce the heat he will take for trading him; or he is trying to reduce the market demand overall for Rondo so as to so lock him up for less money; or he has no agenda and is simply saying what is on his mind.
Rondo won Game 6 for the Celts against the Lakers last year. Even Phil J admitted as much. I can’t see why Danny would want to trade a player like that, ESPECIALLY since Danny is the one who has coveted this guy all along

There may be a trade, but not just for trade's sake...
I think Ainge realizes that Perk, Ray and Rondo have more value now than they are in fact truly worth. Rondo had a great playoffs, but the fact is, he would be better on a run and gun team, and this team is committed to KG and PP, who don’t thrive in that style. If DA can turn Rondo and Ray into a young star (Amare), or two young, potentially emerging stars (Gay, Conley), I think he will. The team we have now may be able to win another championship next season, but if we go into that year as is, then let Ray walk, we WILL NOT have the cap room to add a max guy without letting Rondo among others walk, and Ainge sees that using Ray and Rondo (and maybe Perk) now as assets to reload is best for the future, but he won’t do it unless he gets back enough to keep us competitive for a title this year.

the more closely I read Ainge's comments...
…the less likely it seems that he will actually deal Rondo
call me crazy, but I think he’s being open and honest about the kid and maybe putting him in his place a little bit to a) challenge him for next year and b) maybe give his agent a cold shower

Ainge's assessment
Was that Rondo is definitely top 10 and arguably top 4-5. I don’t think that’s overly low.

I agree that this could be intended to send a message to the kid, but I think we’re going to find out it’s more than that
I’m hesitant about dealig him too, but I trust Danny in this situation, whatever his motive is

I think Rondo may be going
I find Ainge’s public comments a bit surprising and I think his motivations are a little stronger than trying to make a point to this guy.
This offseason is vital for Danny and the C’s because it charts the course for the next 2 or 3 seasons. That’s why I think Rondo is definitely in play and there’s a pretty good chance he’s getting dealt somewhere.
You can’t gamble a max type contract on someone who can’t shoot and has maturity issues — which he’s always had apparently. If max money is what they think he’s going to want, deal him now. But you better get a PG back because that’s a position not easily filled. Forget Steve Nash. The sooner you stabilize your PG position for the long term the better.

From the transcript
“Do Rondo and Perkins help you win now, with the Big Three, and down the road?”
“I think they do. I think that makes a lot of sense. I think a lot of guys look at young players, as the weak link. Kendrick this year was not a weak link. He did a great job against Dwight Howard.
The way that they were defending us, it was hard for the three superstars…
Rondo, as we saw in the Orlando series, they left him wide open. His presence hurt us in winning right now. His man left him and doubled Ray or Paul.
It made it difficult for us.
They’re young players. They help us win sometimes and they make it harder for us to win sometimes because of their youth and inexperience. They’re good players. They’re not great players. We’re hoping they develop into great players.”
Maybe I`m reading too much into this, but that doesn`t sound as if they want to pay him big money.
by Casperian on Jun 24, 2009 2:09 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Nor should they. As I’ve been saying, his game is simply not developed enough for an eight-digit payday. If nothing else, it’s comforting that Ainge hasn’t fallen into the “Oh, my God, pay Rondo whatever he wants” trap and that his evaluation of Rondo’s current skillset is accurate.

Not that my opinion matters,
but I agree.
I think Kaman/Prince money, $8.000.000/year for 4 years, is a good deal for both sides, and already paying him partially on potential.
by Casperian on Jun 24, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree. If he’s insisting on more, then you do what Ainge is doing – you begin the process of moving him. I’m not interested in paying elite money for a guard with an attitude missing a jump shot.
We’ve got a year. No real rush to move him.
by CoachBo on Jun 24, 2009 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ainge could have him out there...
… but when I first starting hearing these stories I assumed it was about money. The C’s felt out Rondo and his agent on an extension and mihgt have been shocked to learn that RR thinks he’s a max guy.
He’s not a max guy. He’s a young player with a ton of potential and some big holes in his game. Or to be less charitible, he’s a guard who can defend and pass, but can’t shoot or hit his FT’s.
Like Glenn Davis though, he performed well on the big stage, and someone will probably want to overpay him, if the C’s don’t.
One small note: You ever see Rondo wear a C’s jersey outside of a game? He still wears his UK stuff everywhere.

what are you implying with the jersey comment?
Why does it matter if he wears his work uniform outside of work or not?

It Matters
There was an incident where Joe Forte, while a rookie with the Celtics, went around wearing a Lakers jersey (or maybe it was a hat, I forget which). This behavior was not well received by his teammates.
Remember ubuntu.
The more commentators who come out and say Rondo is being shopped due to personality issues, the less likely he will be traded.
I thought Ainge’s assessment of Rondo on the radio this morning was accurate.
by Brickowski on Jun 24, 2009 2:45 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
lakers jersey.. that's pretty unforgivable.
but maybe some players don’t like to wear a C’s jersey outside of a game because they want to maintain their privacy and don’t want to be recognized in public? I’m not trying to rationalize Rondo’s behaviors – I just think fans and the media have been grasping at straws lately.

espn
: Rajon Rondo is definitely on the market. I’m told he’s very hard for Doc Rivers to coach, and that while Rondo gets along OK with his teammates, he’s far from a great teammate. The fear in Boston is that if Rondo’s this difficult to handle on a rookie-scale salary, he’s going to be a monster once he gets big money.
One GM told me, “They won a championship with this guy and he’s coming off a tremendous playoff performance … and they’re looking to trade him. That tells you how bad things are.”

75% Rondo is gone by tomorrow!
Out of nowhere…Ainge suddenly reveals RR was fined a few months ago, and makes the point it was a playoff game he was late for. This had been a well kept secret.
Why? Because, he`s “making his case” to Celtic fans why he is about to trade RR.
Ainge is holding out for Memphis to sweeten the deal.
Ainge wants Gay PLUS the #2 pick…and he`s willing to give up more than RR to get it done.
