The Boston Celtics announced today that guard Tony Allen underwent successful arthroscopic right ankle surgery and posterior tibial tendon repair today at the New England Baptist Hospital. Surgery was performed by Team Physician Dr. Brian McKeon and assisted by Dr. Mark Slovenkai and Jason Rand, PAC. Full recovery is expected with return by training camp this fall.

More surgery for Tony?
Shocking. I wish him well in his recovery, but hopefully he’s playing elsewhere next year.

Where?
Boston sends Tony Allen + $1 million in cash.
Memphis sends Greg Buckner (partially guaranteed contract).
Why for Boston: they’ll spend $1 million (cash considerations trade) + $2 millions (Buckner salary + luxury tax) = total $3 millions. They’ll save $2 millions (comparing with the $5 millions keeping Tony Allen costs).
Why for Memphis: they’ll add Tony Allen to their roster for a $0.5 millions increase in the pay-roll.
Does this work? Maybe we should keep him till the trade deadline.

I think the C’s should trade Tony Allen + $3mil to a team below the cap.
That team makes the difference between pay and cash in profits, and has a choice about whether or not to keep TA. The C’s save the luxury tax payment and free up a roster spot.

Yeps
Same savings for the Celtics. However, I think that deal is easier to make around the trade deadline. I’m not sure which team will be willing to lose $2.5 millions in cap room (and a potential big trade during the season) just to earn a few bucks.

Your starting 2 Guard
With this surgery out of the way and the proposed trade of Ray to Phoenix, the starting 2 Guard spot is all yours Tony. Nothing will stop Danny’s love affair with you. ;)

Ugh...
Danny was recently talking about how effective Tony is as a starter, and again mentioned that he’s not effective in short spurts (which is how Doc uses him). Let’s hope the idea of making Tony a starter doesn’t cross Danny’s mind.

Sound more like a sales pitch to other teams
“Don’t look at what he did as a reserve, look at what he can do as a starter!”
“As a starter, he can fill that hole nicely!”
At least I hope so.

Agreed. Hopefully that's the case...
… because Tony stinks.

damaged goods
this can’t help the sales pitch much, but oh well

"Full recovery is expected with return by training camp this fall."
All part of the sales pitch.
“And to show out appriation to you, we will throw in, free of charge, Gabe Pruitt! Perfect for that 15th roster spot.”

That one from Ainge made me chuckle. The solution to a guy whose basketball attention span is incredibly brief is to start him?
He cannot be serious.
Just get Tony out of town and get someone who can think the game in his place.

Don’t forget that 2nd round pick we’re throwing in either. Think about some one like Arenas, Redd, Ginobilli, Boozer AND you get Tony Allen too!!!!

Poor TA
What a tough 2008-2009 for him. Two ankle injuries (which led to offseason ankle surgery) and a thumb injury (which put him on the shelf for 2 months).

Now We Know
why TA wasn’t playing other than for the obvious reasons.

"Fans" are kinda rough on TA
Kinda reminds us that all the arm-chair coaching and criticism is only that. We have an incomplete view into who is playing and why. And for that matter, who is playing hurt and who is not.
I understand the talk about good and bad Tony, but a lot of folks took his lack of playoff P/T as proof that Doc thinks he stinks. He may stink, but apparently it isn’t the smoking gun some thought it was.
Instead, TA was there ready to play despite the ankle injuries, which to me doesn’t merit criticism at all.

I don't think fans need to love every player on the roster
Tony has a five year track record of not being a very good player. He’s no different now than he was in his rookie seasons, except he rebounds less and turns the ball over more.

wow
Never knew he needed surgery. I know some people here like to kick someone when they are down but I won’t do that here. I would be hard pressed to find anyone who has dealt with more injuries to start his career. Hope he has an injury free year next year regardless of where he is playing.

He is hard to root for
Who doesn’t remember good Tony slashing to the basket, poking the ball away from his man, making surprisingly good passes, and playing totally in rhythm.
And who doesn’t remember more bad Tony dribbling off his foot, smacking his own head for another dumb foul, not switching, looking and playing totally stupid.
Unfortunately we see too much of bad Tony. Move him if you can, Danny. Oklahoma has money to burn.

I feel bad for Tony and I hope he gets well soon
but he’s gotta go.

And JR will be playing elsewhere by next season or 2010/11 ( I didn’t know he had only 1 more year guaranteed) :)
