Starbury Wants To Be Back
The Globe is reporting that Marbury wants to come back to play for the Celtics. I'm sure there is some interest on the part of the Celtics but we'll see how the market plays out.
Marbury will be an unrestricted free agent beginning tomorrow and is excited about the possibility of making a title run again next season.
Celtics coach Doc Rivers has said he hopes Marbury will be back.
"I’m not trying to get a bunch of money,’’ Marbury said. "I know Boston doesn’t have a bunch of money. I’m not seeking out teams with more money. I want to play for a championship-contending team. I can’t play for a young team that’s not in a position to compete for a championship.
"I want to play in Boston. I’m not going to say that I don’t. But I know the way that business works. If I don’t come back it won’t be because of me.’’

Sure, let's see some more.
I for one haven’t seen enough of him to judge on whether or not he’s worthy of the green.
- Dirk 'DaarisDirk' van Boxtel
Nice mindset from Starbury.
He won’t ask for many money because he is aware of the team needs and he wants to come back, so I say re-sign him, he would be perfect as Rondo’s backup all year and summer camp + the season will make him competitive again.
Surprising that Doc wants to see Marbury back after his first statements about him but… if it’s true it’s all good.
Never would've believed it
That I would vote to have Stephan Marbury back on my beloved Celtics. Man, what a difference a year makes and redemption should not be under-estimated. He and Eddie made a nice backcourt and I’m all for it.

WE WANT MARBURY!
I love the fact that he doesn’t care about the money and just wants to win it all with the Celtics.
Seriously can’t wait to see how this goes.
The next season seems so far away. :(
This is easy
If Marbury really wants to play for the C’s, offer him either the LLE or Vet. Min., which ever is more. If he is willing to take that offer from the C’s, then that is one less position we need filled. Marbury would likely be a legit backup PG with a full offseason and preseason with the team fully learning the system.
I believe,
we can offer him up to like 2 million a year, without dipping into any of our exemptions.
by beantownboy171 on Jun 30, 2009 8:22 AM EDT up reply actions
Well...
That would seem to be a fair offer. Low enough to see if he really wants to win, but not so low as to humiliate him.

Trading Rondo
If it becomes increasingly clear to Danny that we won’t land a big man worth a darn, I suspect he will renew talks to trade rondo. If successful, he’ll bring back starberry and maybe sign kidd too. This assumes he gets a coveted big for rondo.
by Black Jack Pershing on Jun 30, 2009 7:32 AM EDT reply actions
hmmmm….no
and how do you kno danny is looking for a coveted big?
because the offer of ray/rondo for rip/stuckey prince isnt exactly for a big, and neither was rondo for conley/gay
no renewing rondo trade talks please and thank you
rondo will not be traded
everyone forgets it takes two to tango. those trade rumors were legit. no one bit on rondo for reason. he is staying and i assume marbury will stay to give lessons on how to be a grounded unselfish team player.

should be an option for Not Sure
I would vote Not Sure at this point.
He’s still saying the right things so that’s a positive. I can’t help but believe that a full training camp will sharpen his skills. The Marbury we saw last year had a lot of rust from inactivity. I have not doubt he’d be better this year.
The optimal scenario is we hold off signing him until after Summer League if at all possible to see what Pruitt does. If Pruitt makes the leap this year (I’m not terribly optimistic about that prospect), backup PG could be all set without Marbury and we could focus more on the C and wing backups.
A more realistic scenario would be Pruitt doesn’t show enough to have his contract picked up and Marbury is willing to come to camp for the Vet Min which helps in the salary dept. (I have to find Roy’s post on whether vet min guys don’t count against the cap, luxury tax or both but I know it’s at least one of those).
He's a Loser
Absolutely not, no, nada.
I’m not willing to risk a roster spot on him. As Title 18 says, he flunked his audition. Not only were his offensive stats bad, his defense was basically a show of false hustle.
There are better options for the same money.
I think Marbury’s agent should call Cleveland and Orlando. I’d like nothing better for him to land a spot with one of those teams and take minutes away from better players.
Wrong!
Marbury played badly at times, yes. However, he did show occasional signs of good play. That is the epitome of a player who had not played for almost an entire year. Add to that the fact he joined the team late in the season. He did not have a chance to practice with the team for an effective amount of time or spend an entire preseason in camp learning the system. Ft shooting pct. was obvisously bad, but how many attempts did he actually take. If he shot, say, 6 for 13 (.462 pct.), then that is too few shots to matter. In the end, the vet. min. would be a perfect offer for Marbury.
by 420celticsFAN on Jun 30, 2009 8:23 AM EDT up reply actions
I think
the comments on his defense are completely unfair. Maybe he looked bad in the begining, but once he got acustomed to the system i didn’t notice a difference between him and rondo.

Pretty harsh
Can’t argue although as a backup PG he’s cheap and I still think he can be somewhat productive.
"Do you know that nonbelievers create the most positive energy?" Davis said
Compare him to the alternatives
We’re talking about keeping Starbury as a reserve PG who’ll see limited minutes. His most important job is to bring the ball up and start the offense without turning the ball over – something that House, for all his value to the team as a scorer, has shown he cannot be counted on to do.
Can I think of better point guards? Of course I can. But can we get a reserve PG, cheap, who is likely to do better? I don’t think so.
I was wrong
I thought brick would have been the first on this one.
But Im not clear on how you really feel??? Are you saying you dont like him??
Or are you saying there is still a chance?
False Hustle?
You either hustle or you don’t. False hustle is the most absurd, contradictory statement I have ever heard.
There is a precedent for false hustle.
Want to watch the poster boy of false hustle, beantown and 420? Watch reels of Gary Payton in a Celtic uniform with the rabid arm flapping and jumping around while his guy blew by him. That is when he made it down defensively at all….
I think Marbury was actually trying defensively. His problem is that he hadn’t played defense since probably middle school. He did a lot of the same stuff Payton did with the frantic purposeless movements. With Marbury, it’s because he’d played so little defense he didn’t know any better.
by iowa plowboy on Jun 30, 2009 8:36 AM EDT up reply actions
I have to disagree.
False hustle, or fake hustle, as I prefer to call it, is a common occurrence in basketball. One of its main manifestations is when somebody lunges for the ball in transition defense. Typically, they wind up with nothing, and are left standing in mid-court while the rest of their team is left playing short-handed on a fast break. And in fact, the lunging for the ball wasn’t so much about hustling, or helping the team. Instead, it was about taking a selfish gamble. If you come up with the ball, you’re a hero. If you don’t, then you don’t have to do the real hustling of getting back on defense, and meanwhile, somebody else on the team has to be one that gets individually scored on. Oh, and if one of your teammates steals the ball, then you’re set up to cherry-pick for the long pass under the basket.
I understand your points
But to me, swiping at the ball, flailing you arms, and running around aimlessly are not hustle at all. My defintion of hustle is, purposeful and intelligent giving of effort in attempt to play productively for the betterment of your team. Did Marbury not know where he should be, when he should be? Most likely yes, but he was giving an honest effort, which is not false at all.
by 420celticsFAN on Jun 30, 2009 8:42 AM EDT up reply actions
Maybe You Don't Know What False Hustle Is, But Coaches Do.
Take a look down the right hand column until you come to Billy Donovan’s picture. And BTW, the whole article is quite good on how you coach defense.
http://www.coachlikeapro.com/basketball-man-to-man-defense.html
Again
I get what you’re saying, but those actions really aren’t hustle at all. You can not fake hustle, honest effort.

Don't even pay attention to Brickowski
He clearly hates Marbury for some reason or another. Marbury played really good D the whole time he was on the C’s. Doc and Danny have even said this. He was just rusty on offense after not playing competitive ball for a year and a half . He showed great hustle and willingness to be a team player and is hungry for a championship. You saw what he did in Game 5 against Orlando scoring 12 points in the 4th quarter helping thw C’s go up 3-2 without Garnett against the eventual EC Champs. He can do much more of that and be much more consistent with a full training camp and season with the C’S and he WILL be a force off the bench next year
Excuse me? The guy sucked. I have eyes.
I don’t hate any player. However, I’m against giving contracts to players who didn’t perform. Waste of a roster spot. There are plenty of other point guards out there.
Dude didn't play for a year and a half
and he came into a very complicated system. To me its a matter of options. We can get marbury back to be our back up without using either of our exemptions, lle or mle, and how many decent back up point guards are out there that we could get with vet minimum?
I’d say give both him and pruitt at backup point, because Eddie House has already proved in the past that he can be a good third option at point, and we’ll need eddie even less at sg if we get another wing.
The most important position this offseason is the backup 3, and we need to save as much money, unless we get a big like rasheed or dice, for that position. It makes us that much deeper at SG, and PG just by making it so marbury and house and TA don’t have to play multiple positions.
But rondohondos lets keep the personal attacks to a minimum, everyone has a right to their own opinion, and i think in an offseason that was deeper at point i might agree with brick, but we just have too many needs at this point.
by beantownboy171 on Jun 30, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions
most important
most important position to fill is the back center spot, not the wing. we have NO bodies that are big enough to back up Perk. That needs to be addressed. Powe and BBD are short PFs, never mind being short for a center.
We have bodies to play back up wing. we can’t force Doc to play them and whether you have confidence in them is a different issue but we do have bodies for that spot currently on the roster.

Haven't you posted about Rondo being traded?
Just want to clarification so I know who I need to pay attention too.
"Do you know that nonbelievers create the most positive energy?" Davis said
Hey, Gabe Pruitt, are you paying attention?
Pruitt has to get focused, come in and look especially sharp in the summer league. He needs to show Ainge and Doc that he can offensively play the backup point guard role, and be the better choice to pair up with Eddie House than Marbury. Otherwise, he’s gone.
exactly
right on the money—-Pruitt has to show he’s worth keeping this summer or he needs to go.

Rasheed????
Jeff,
how come nothing on the Tanguay rumor? Is there anything to it and if so what would it mean for Baby? If Danny could find a way to unload scal and tony that would be huge. There are going to be a lot of disappointed free agents this summer; every FA thinks they’re worth a lot of coin but teams just don’t have it to spend. Looking at our salary list it’s pretty clear that ray allen is a luxury at $19M. If we don’t look like a championship team come the trading deadline then Ray has to go. I’m sure danny is mulling it over right now whether we can win a title without ray.
we covered the Tanguay stunt in detail

NOT a rumor (at least not based on the information that we have)

I like Marbury’s attitude.
Wow, that sounds odd.
Anyway, the only problem I have with Marbury on the team is that it creates an imbalance on the floor with Eddie. Two very short guys. And if Hudson makes the team, then that gives us three very short guys. In all, I’d pass.
Hudson
I’d be surprised if he makes the team. If he does it’s likely one of 2 scenarios: 1—he impressed in camp to the point where he outshone Pruitt and made him expendable (that’s not a bad scenario for the C’s) or 2—he impresses in camp to the point where Danny keeps him to learn the system for a year and takes Eddie’s spot next year for less $ (also not a bad scenario for the C’s). If scenario 2 happens and he shows he’s as good as Eddie in terms of providing offense off the bench, Eddie may be used as a trading chip with TA and Veal at the trading deadline to get a better bench player (my preference would be Nocioni).

Not a bad Idea
Give Marbury a second chance – in some Games he was really an important factor of the bench – First, I guess that will improve in the next season and second I think he is a very good and experienced PG and third he’s a good friend of K.G. and doesn’t even have the possibility to play with him…
I asked god and he said: L.A. will lose again next year!! ^_°
Well, if we are going to let Hudson show his stuff, then we are going to have a logjam with our little dwarfs playing 1 and 2. If we keep Marbury; there will be no place for Hudson. The Powers That Be will make that decision in due course.
He's the 58th pick in the draft.
If we have to choose between marbury and the 58th pick, ill take marbury.

No one suggests a realistic alternative
We need to spend our $$$ on a big, with a backup 3 being the next priority. The rumblings about Grant Hill are encouraging in that regard: he’d be ideal.
Thus, we won’t have anything but the vet min, probably, to spend on a backup PG. No one suggests a realistic alternative to Starbury, under that scenario. Anyone who thinks Kidd or Bibby (LOL) are coming for that, must be dreaming. Hudson won’t even make the team; he certainly isn’t someone Doc will play as backup PG.
The fact that NOT ONE realistic alternative to Starbury has been proposed by anyone speaks volumes.

This is a good point
If Starbury wants to come back for the cheap… Why in the world would you not take him? We need a backup point (although less so than a 5 and 3), and no other FA sound desirable without spending the full MLE.

To me it depends
specifically on the wing player brought in and House opting out (or not.)
Hill, Rasheed, and House would be a perfectly fine 6, 7, and 8. But if they bring in a wing with less handle and more shot, Marbury looks better and better. Optimally the backup PG can play next to Rondo or Ray. The more you have shooters at the backup spots the better an option Marbury is. House is sort of a weird case because even though Marbury and House have different position/role they are battling for the same minutes.
p.s. I’m assuming no trades of the starting 5.
you guys are drunk on the juice
You got an extra 2 million laying around? – Give it to PO(we) – that’s hustle and he deserves it alot more than Starbury even if Po(we) can’t play because of his injury.
When Starbury agrees to give his “small” Celtics salary to charity then maybe I would listen. He is still paid quite well from the Knicks. Who knows what else he is getting from the other teams he quit on or blew up on or walked away from.
Poor poor little Starbury – does he need a hug? a home? Baaaaaaaah Humbug or Baaahhhh Humthug
Is it Soup Yet?
he can’t play worse than he did last year, the big question being, how much better? he also sounds motivated to be here and cheap- all favorable points. danny has to get the big guy and the pp backup first and see what he has left. if steph is still there and noone on the horizon-he’s ours- a lot of ifs for steph and the c’s.
PO(we) is to small
I wouldn’t hold Powe if Sheed is coming – Yes he is a good post-up player, but
with his size, he will always be blocked by other big mans with his move… Sure he got better after the loss of K.G. but that should be so because he was the main-backup of K.G. – BTW every big man had to step up his play to compensate a star player. Sure Marbury did many bad things in the past but not even one thing by the celts – he knows his big chance to get a ring with the celts and thats why he will get better in the next season
I asked god and he said: L.A. will lose again next year!! ^_°
YES YES YES
Love to have Steph on short money with a full season to get acquainted with the system.
He’s shown that he’s ready to take a backseat, content for a title, put the ego aside, help the team and have some fun. That boy has already gotten his money.
Steph and Sheed plus a 3 and Big Baby … we’re chillin’.
Steph gave his best effort to try and regain some semblance of his old game in order to help us get #18 last season. Can’t ask for much more than that. Well, maybe for a few more shots to have dropped? That’s mostly forgivable when his layoff is taken into account, though.
Anyway, I’d love to have him back.

What I want to Know
Is how 1169 people who purport to be Celtics fans could possibly vote for this stiff.
What you saw last year is what you will get this year.
perhaps
because they realize that:
- he didn’t play himself into anything bigger than a Vet Min contract
- he’s been exposed to the C’s system already so he’s not completely new to the concepts
- he’s got the positive mentality of wanting to win and wanting to fit in with the team concept
- he had a long layoff where he accumulated a lot of rust. a full training camp will expose if that rust is permanent or if he’s still got some game left.
- if the contract is not guaranteed unless he makes the roster there’s no financial risk
Not exactly a losing proposition to bring him back with a non-guaranteed vet min contract. If he can’t show he’s still got some game by the end of the pre-season, cut him loose.

Marbury Wants to Return to Boston
Because no one else in the league wants anything to do with him. Maybe he should check out his options in Europe or Asia.
Maybe you need to chill with all the Marbury hate
You are clearly in the minority among C’s fans. Why don’t you suggest a PG you would rather have for the VET Min ? I’ll tell you why , because there are no other options that are better than Marbury! You just hate on Marbury without giving us a legit PG that can be had for the vet min …..

neither you nor brick have answered rondohondo's challenge
to give us a player who would sign for the min who is better than Marbury. I think it’s legitimate to question someone’s motives if they hate on a player (or his game) without a suitable solution.

A couple of things
First, i didn’t see RondoHondo’s challenge. Secondly had I seen it I would have probably not answered for two reasons (1) I don’t know who would accept the minimum for a PG who is better Why? because I am not out there talkng to them or their agents or watching them work out!!!!! Geesh and (2) I am not RondoHondo’s yard dog who jumps through hoops everytime he has “a challenge”. Challenge this.
In my post I simply stated that any “miminum salary” money Wyc has laying around (which I assume he does not) should go to Leon Po before Marbury. Why do I say that? Because Po(we) demonstrated ultimate husltle for this team during a lot more games than did Starbury and was quite important in us winning banner 17.
Po(we) is a great guy with a touching hard luck story who has overcame struggles and adversity in his life to finally getting some recognition for his hard work and skills – to only to have it taken away.
Of course this is quite unlike Starbury who has made a ton of money in the NBA, has quit on his team or his teammates more than once, and is coming off an 18 million dollar or so buy-out from the Knicks
Is my opinion worth anything in the whole scheme of things? Nope. Mine is no more or less important than yours, Bricks, or RondoHondo. I just don’t like Marbury in green – but guess what – I ain’t on that committee.
Peace
Is it Soup Yet?
you still don’t answer the question…… Doc has already said they are most likely going to bring back Leon, it has no effect on the Marbury situation . Of course it doesn’t matter what all of our opinions are because we are not Danny, but you and Brickowski are saying not to bring him back and don’t even have a solution or suggestion on who we would bring in instead because there is no one . No other free agent that can be had for the Vet Min has a chance of being the kind of impact player Marbury can be with a training camp under his belt. The guy can still get to the rim at will and has shown that he can be a team player.
Oh and by the way Bibby, Kidd and Miller aren’t accepting the Vet Min. Those are the only PG’S out there with more capability than Marbury….
Marbury has been in the system for a half year and will have the summer and training camp to learn it even better. We need some stability at the backup PG position and Marbury gives that to us.
Bobby Jackson
I’d still prefer Marbury, and was defending him earlier in these posts. But, if Marbury doesn’t want the vet. min., Bobby Jackson could be had for the vet. min. most likely.

I'm for it
Clearly the guy had a lot of rust on his game after not playing for a year and a half. What I saw was a guy trying really hard to fit in, to be a good team mate. Though really rusty, I think he showed that underneath that rust there was game left.
I think with a complete training camp and preseason (plus the familiarity he gained last year) I think he’d round into one of the best backup PGs in the league. If he’s willing to sign on the cheap, I think it’d work out well for us.
