Rondo Not On The Block

The PG of the future still has a future in Boston.

The PG of the future still has a future in Boston.

Finally, a source that makes some sense.  Sam Amico has a source with the Celtics that puts to death the worlds dumbest trade rumor.

A source within the Boston Celtics organization insisted that contrary to reports, the team is not looking to trade point guard Rajon Rondo.

"Can he be frustrating at times? Absolutely. But no one is ready to give up on him," the source said.

"Whoever put the Rondo rumors out there obviously works for someone other than the Celtics."

The source said that the Celtics may have had some "very minor" conversations about Allen, "but he's not likely going anywhere, either."

He concluded, "My guess is some other team talked to (the Celtics), mentioned Ray in passing, and then the other team took it to people throughout the league who accepted it as gospel. That's how these things get started, and now Danny is going to have to get out there and refute all this stuff that he really had nothing to do with.

"Does the team need some tweaking? Most definitely. But there is no panic around here, and trading Rajon and Ray would be a panic move. That's why it's so absurd."

Can I get an "amen?"

The fact that this rumor stuck around for 3 news cycles is a testament to the lack of real rumors and the insatiable need that fans (like me) have for such silly things.

Amico

…unlike HoopsWorld, has credibility in my book

he’s been wrong before, but I don’t think he’s blowing smoke just to get attention like HW

It's also a testament to how beloved Rondo has become to the fans.

I’m just speaking for myself, but I don’t even want to think about him playing elsewhere.

Trading RONDO...

…would be like the Patriots trading Tom Brady right now.
He’s the floor general and leader of the pack…
There is no way in heck they’d trade him, for ‘basically’ anyone.

Don't fake the funk on a nasty dunk

Just for piece of mind, I’d like to know where the declaration of Rondo being ‘frustrating’ is coming from – his play at times, dealing with the FO, locker room? Just wondering I guess…

by BOSPORTS on Jun 5, 2009 4:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well...

Apparently Rondo has a history of being a hothead and having moodiness. Doc Rivers seconded that last year but Rondo is still one of my favorite players

Sounds like Rondo is safe. Not so sure about Ray...

Sound like unless someone knocks off their socks for Rondo, they are not going to discuss him.

As for Ray they are all ears, but they are not looking to just move him on the cheap (aka. not pulling a Wallace)

by Wide Load on Jun 5, 2009 4:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well, finally I'm relieved now...

… Since it seems unlikely that Ray and Rondo get traded, everything is alright, Danny must focus on adding good players on the bench, the starting five must not be changed (it’s the better one of the league when healthy).

by Drucci on Jun 5, 2009 4:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And this statement is different because...

A rumor is a rumor, my friends and this rumor started from somewhere, so there’s something brewing. The Stormin Mormon did tell Red to trade Kevin McHale…come on, now! Amico is no better than anyone else. Looks like we’re in for a loooooong summer! Get your bloodpressure medicines ready! hahahaha

Go C’s!!!

Sounds like it was Wyc

—and he was referring to Danny’s conversations with other teams. I think it’s very unlikely that Rondo gets traded, but I think Danny’s probably been a little more probing re: Ray than Wyc presents it. Makes perfect sense that Danny may have asked about Ray for Amare, then the Suns shot back, ‘Sure, maybe if you toss Rondo in", then that’s what the Suns needed to get the Amare buzz going at an extravagant level.

And, of course, Wyc recently went on about how he deceived everyone with KG’s playing injured, so his offering anything other than this obvious denial is unlikely anyway.

I really don’t take Amico any more seriously than Hoopsworld.

Don't buy it...

I don’t take this seriously. It is all posturing and I would not be surprised in the least to see Rondo/Ray traded.

Bingo

Why anyone thinks that Ainge or the front office would be willing to already blow up this team when it has at least 2 years of LEGIT chances at a title is beyond me.

More over

There is no way to trade these guys without in fact, BLOWING UP this team. How does that make sense? You might as well trade KG and Paul if thats the route youre going – and theres no reason to go that route at all. Amare makes absolutely no sense, is tremendously overpaid and even more overrated. Not to mention he sucks defensively and plays the same position as our franchise player. You cant make it work without figuring in two follow up trades… that’s how you know there is absolutely no truth to this.

Its stupid and makes absolutely no sense. Ray and Rondo will flat out not be traded. Anyone who thinks otherwise plays too many NBA video games.

for what it is worth

Kerr denies talking to the Celtics

http://greenstreet.weei.com/sports/boston/basketball/celtics/2009/06/05/report-suns-havent-talked-to-celtics/

"There’s a lot of stuff flying around out there that has no basis," Suns General Manager Steve Kerr said. "There’s just a ton of speculation but there really is nothing substantial going on.

"With most of these deals being speculated about, I haven’t even had a conversation with the opposing team. I read this stuff and laugh."

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers" Henry V

What is this, a game of gossip?

The azcentral piece doesn’t quote anyone from the Suns specifically denying talking with the Celtics, and they title their article a breezy, ‘Amare rumors, but no real trade talk’.

Then Jessica Camarato quotes them, claiming that they denied talking to the Celtics, when they quote no such denial at all, but her article is titled, Report: Suns haven’t talked to the Celtics’.

And now Celticsblog is saying Kerr denied talking to the Celtics, when he only says he hasn’t had a conversation with most of the deals speculated about—leaving to conjecture that at least one such deal is based on at least something.

by clover on Jun 5, 2009 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not saying the deal is going to happen...

I just don’t believe a word a Gm says. It is all protecting the value of his assets. Do I want them to trade Rondo for Stoudamire? Maybe, maybe not… has it been discussed? Wouldn’t doubt it.

If Kerr were to come out and say there was validity to this rumor, it would probably only make it a formality that Barbosa and STAT are goners, which does not help him.

by rickyfan3.0... on Jun 5, 2009 5:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Read between the lines...

“Rondo not on the block”…is NOT the same as Rondo will not be traded, or is untouchable.

It only means that the Celts are not activey seeking to trade him.
That could change in a heartbeat if the right opportunty came along.

Rondo is very good, no argument from me.

But, he does have glaring weaknesses :
—He should be further along in developing an out-side shot by now, but isn`t.
—He doesn`t get to the line {3.4 FT attempts this year}
—He`s a lousy FT shooter {64% this year}
—He`s nowhere even close to being Chris Paul in any category

Good post.

I don’t think Rondo or Allen get traded, either. But the former is hardly untradeable.

by CoachBo on Jun 5, 2009 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree, kinda the latter is more tradeable than the former

by Celtic_24 on Jun 5, 2009 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Uh, I never said Allen is untradeable. I said Rondo isn’t.

by CoachBo on Jun 5, 2009 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Did you really list "not being Chris Paul" as a weakness?

A guy who is probably going to go down as one of the top 5 at his position ever and we’re knocking Rondo for not being as good as him.

Stupid Perkins… he’s no vintage Shaq!

Panic?

Why is trading Ray Allen (or Rondo for that matter) a “panic” move? It depends on what you get in return.

Everyone in the league knows that Ray Allen (and his expiring deal) can be had at the right price, which will be high because RA is a very good player and a class act.

The real issue is Celtics’ ownership. Are they willing to take on the salary commitments to the players for whom Ray might be traded? Quite frankly, Keeping Ray, letting his deal expire, and then trying to resign him for less is the cheapskate approach.

by Brickowski on Jun 5, 2009 6:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Its a panic move...

b/c there’s no possible realistic return for Ray that would work. You can dump Ray’s contract, but youre going to get a worse player than Ray back. It would be nearly impossible to make a lateral move, nevermind improve that way. Who is going to take Ray and give us back a good, young SG to replace him? Practically, this is impossible. That’s why its a panic move.

Trade

I was hoping for a trade, the offseason is so long and boring

by Champzilla on Jun 5, 2009 7:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This is all rather nonsensical.

We all know that no one is truly untouchable. One could always imagine a ridiculous trade offer (which almost certainly would never be made) that you’d hand over everyone for. To call someone untouchable is simply to engage in a form of flattery.

The Reasons For the Ray-Rajon Rumors

This is gospel. The 11th commandmant says that at this time of the year basketball rumors must surface. For the Celtics this means certain things. A KG rumor would go nowhere. The Paul Pierce rumors have been overdone and don’t work anymore. That leaves the R’s. Perk is out because he’s the only guy who can guard bigs one on one. Any other rumors wouldn’t be that interesting.

course they are on the block

danny saw what happened to the original big three when they got old. if he isn’t shopping to get younger or improve the team, then he should be fired. that said, i hope they keep rondo, but as much as i like allen, i would not mind seeing him dealt to a team looking to get into the free agent lottery next year.

Amen

Stupidest rumor ever…

no one is untouchable, but keep ray and rondo- a very productive backcourt.

by nazzbo on Jun 5, 2009 9:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I never doubt it

Rondo and Perkins are our future, but i think we can trade Ray if we receive a younger star (I don’t believe Stoudemire) although it’s a very difficult thing to do

by Jack_Frost on Jun 6, 2009 5:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Do people see the Celtics going WAY over the luxury tax line?

I’ll be very impressed with Wyc and Co. but I don’t see it. Assuming they resign Baby, we’re already $7M at least over the lux tax. I don’t see a $90M+ payroll happening.

In fact, I’m failing to see how we can significantly upgrade our bench without either (A) a trade or (B) two or three stellar bench-quality FAs falling into our lap for the minimum/near minimum.

by Berkcelt on Jun 6, 2009 5:13 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Believe ????

I don’t believe anything written or heard until you see the transaction announced. I never thought we would ever get KG right? That said, possibly moving Ray would give Ainge the most flexibility in getting players back due to Ray’s salary as opposed to mining the free agent bargain bins like he did last summer. Suppose NO really wanted a salary dump and proposed Chandler and Julian Wright for Ray (I’m sure there would be others involved to make the money work). Suppose the Bulls wanted to rearrange some of their contracts and made Deng available. Danny would have to seriously consider it. Charlotte has players they will want to dump that could help Boston. Most teams do. My guess is that Ainge would only pull the trigger if he could get a player that he can see help him beyond the GPA era instead of just being short term help. Time will tell.

ya never know

but…Rondo and Ray’s contract are a package that would return a top 10 player in his prime….somebody that had to be traded before they left…eg-Wade,Bosh,LeBron etc…= ain’t happening soon….if we did get that guy then KG & PP play till they’re 40 yrs old…ha

by Motown on Jun 6, 2009 8:36 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Rondo and Ray’s contract are a package that would return a top 10 player in his prime

Absolutely zero chance of that. No way. Not even close.
