Baby Expects To Get Offers

Big Baby looking for big payday.

Big Baby looking for big payday.

Mark Murphy reports:

According to a league source, Davis, as a restricted free agent, will carry a mid-level exception (approximately $5.8 million) price tag into the marketplace.

Murphy goes on to say that the Celtics can offer him about the same amount of money without using the MLE if they are willing to spend the money.  It sounds like some teams might be willing to pay him.

Detroit and Memphis - two teams with cap space - both are expected to court Davis over the next month.

Davis has lit up Detroit in the past and they are trying to rebuild on the fly.  Memphis, on the other hand, could offer him a starting position on a young and growing team.

Regardless, I don't expect Davis to be giving us a hometown discount and I expect the Celtics will allow the market to set the price before they make any further offers.

I think BBD is a goner

Especially if the Celtics are able to sign Rasheed Wallace to the MLE. There is no way they are paying BBD 5 MIL a year( really 10 MIL because of the luxury tax). Rasheed can space the floor with his shooting just like BBD , only he has more range, is much bigger and can play both the Center and PF positions, so there really wouldn’t be any minutes for BBD . Wallace would get about 25- 30 Mins a game backing up Perk and KG.

Just agent noise

Detroit didn’t trade Maxiel, did they? Because they don’t need two. Memphis needs starting Grade A type players and won’t blow $5 mil on a guy with Baby’s size unless they believe in his continuing improvement. I’m a sucker for our own guys but I don’t know if Baby can get a whole lot better. Agent chatter also isn’t going to change the financial reality in the economy which Memphis can’t ignore.
I think $3.5 mil ea for 3 yrs gets him back w C’s

Dumars isn`t stupid. He certainly won`t overpay Davis. But Chris Wallace is an idiot. I can see MEM making a stupid offer for Big Baby.

I wouldn`t match anything more than 4 mio per year…I think 3 mio is a good number for davis…

If Detroit wants to give BBD a full-MLE contract, that doesn’t bother me. It’ll mean they’re letting McDyess walk away, and Baby isn’t guy that I’m afraid to face in the playoffs. He can score, and he can play a little D, but he can’t rebound and he’s always going to be limited by his height and relatively short arms. I still think he’s going to be going to be pushing 350# before too many years go by.

In this economy...

Hometown discounts no longer exist anywhere. They are extinct…especially when it come to young players who haven`t made money yet.

I can see where BBD would look good compared to most free agents out there…He`s young, he has progressed, and he appears incapable of ever getting injured.

Despite his shortcomings, all it takes is one crazed GM to “think” BBD is a future Charles Barkley {only bigger}….and he`ll be gone!

I will pass on Baby at $5.8 a year. That’s at least two large more than he’s worth.

If BBD can get an MLE offer, more power to him. I would hope Danny wouldn’t match it and would get a player signed that is actually big enough to back up Perk and KG.

I wouldn’t mind having him back for 3 yrs at 3 mill a year but more than 3.5 a year is too high.

Danny would be wise to let the market determine his worth in order to prevent any overpayments.

I'll miss Baby

Great guy to have on this team, you can’t let guys with a fatal flaw (height) tie up your payroll though.

by rickyfan3.0... on Jul 1, 2009 7:54 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

and weight, the guy is going to be a blob in 3-5 years. If he is 300LBS in his early 20’s that is only going to get worse

Actually...

Baby has already lost 20 pounds and plans to be down at least another 20 by time time camp starts. I actually believe that he is going to be a good player in this league. I don’t think he is worth 5.8, but if he starts for a team it is conceivable that he grows into that type of value.

Big Baby has lost 20lbs? What weight is he now?

Is he planning on slimming down much more?

Eminently Replacable

Davis would be a great pickup for Memphis in the $5 million dollar range because he would start. Paying a limitted bench player that kind of money is crazy.

Oberto brings the same production at half the cost, and he is 5 inches taller.

washed up

Did you see any of the Spurs games last year? Oberto is not capable of producing in this league anymore.

No minutes for Baby?

Perk and KG should be limited to no more than 30 min. per game, for obvious reasons. That would leave about 36 min. for thier respective back-ups. Sheed wouldn’t be getting all of those minutes, there will be times both Perk and KG are off at the same time. Why not pay Baby the full MLE? If Wyc really does want to win, we need to spend to keep up with the other contenders, and you can’t have too many good bigs. Chances are, even if our payroll was around $85-$90 mil., the C’s would still make money. The Garden is sold out every night, Comcast pays good money to televise the C’s, and the C’s have a huge, national, fan base.

Trade?

If BBD accepts an offer from Detroit or Memphis, would we simply sign him, and then trade him to the team? We wouldn’t let him just walk, right?

by amenhotep04 on Jul 1, 2009 8:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not likely

It would be almost impossible to do a sign and trade with a contract of that amount for Baby, BYC rules would apply.

I don't understand

How people can say paying someone like Posey, Dice, Hill, Andersen or others of that ilk is acceptable but paying Davis is not. These other players may have done it for longer but are really no different. They all do some things well and others not so well.

has anyone whiffed the economy lately- it stinks. i like bb but if i am an owner i do not pay 5 mill. to bb. if someone does, that someone has sinus and big pocketbook problems.

I dont understand celtics fans and there differeing opinions on davis/powe

some cry in frustration over not signing powe because they want him a celtics for life, but couldnt care less if we lost the much better player in davis…

who isnt detroit linked to right now? how could davis start in front of Gasol/Thabeet?

Gordon, Villanueva Land In Detroit

“Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that the pair are “moving rapidly toward deals” with the club."

Increases the chances of the C’s resigning BBD

New Orleans

I expect BBD to get an offer from the Hornets, where he will help attract fans to the arena.

by Brickowski on Jul 1, 2009 12:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't see them offer the MLE

Unless they can unload Peja or Chandler for some partial guaranteed contracts.

by Wide Load on Jul 1, 2009 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think they’re too far over the luxury tax to spending that type of money on Davis.
