Sheed Got A Midnight Visit From Danny
Well, that just about confirms it. If true, this proves that Rasheed Wallace is the Celtics top priority of the summer. Via Wojo:
Sources say Boston Celtics GM Danny Ainge and assistant director of basketball operations Leo Papile showed up on Rasheed Wallace’s(notes) doorstep just after midnight Wednesday to make their recruiting push.
"I know he is definitely considering playing for them," one league source said.
The Celtics also have expressed interest in Toronto Raptors guard Anthony Parker(notes).
Now I have to start looking for ways to justify this in my head. You'll know I've come around to the darkside when I publish a post titled "Dr. Strangelove: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love The Sheed"
...I mean, his teammates usually like him so maybe he just gets a bad rep for how he yells at officials. And when he's on he's really good. Oh no, I'm doing it already. Somebody stop me.

GIVE IN TO THE DARK SIDE, JEFF
Seriously though talent wins out all the time. If he keeps his head on straight this is an excellent move. But I’m with you, I’ve never been a fan. Get him, re-sign Marbury and find a way to get Artest. Go for the all crazy team.

a few comments.
1. Po is a much bigger fan of Powe than Brendan.
2. Po you will love Sheed just like you loved Steph. Just think of all the techs you can look forward to with Sheed, Perk and KG.
3. Anthony Parker is 34 years old!!!! Why doesn’t anyone mention this? Matrix is only 31, and a better player.
When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"

Because Matrix would be a MLE player and Parker is likely to be a vet min or LLE type of guy, imo.

yea
Parker is an interesting case because he was a great peformer overseas. It might be tough to keep him in the NBA because of the offers he is probably hearing.

The real debate is...
Are we better off going for a higher salaried big-man (Wallace) and then having to get a guy like Parker/Barnes with the scraps we have left to offer, or do we pay a visit to Ron Ron in Rocketland (now that Yao is likely done forever) to pry him away with a 4-5 year full MLE, and then get like Oberto on the cheap?
Whoever our 6th man is, I would hope that he is able to cover two positions effectively; Sheed goes for the 4/5 where we seem to be thinner on the depth chart, but Artest does the 2/3/ small 4 and can really bring some needed toughness to the secondary.
by sdceltsfan on Jul 1, 2009 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Parker - cheap or not at all
Had a look at his stat line and scouting report. We’d better get him cheap – or at most have most of his pay pegged to performance goals.
He’s 34. Even when he was young, nobody considered him a great athlete. and he can’t create his own shot. Last year he declined pretty sharply – his shooting % went below 43%. He works hard on D but he’s no stopper and, again, he’s slowing down.
Best case, he has a rebound year and is essentially a 6’6" Eddie House. Why do we need that when we also have Ray-Ray on the floor? Is that the plan – spread the floor for the second unit and bomb away? Better get a defensive stopper or two out there…

Come On Down Jeff
I think Wa;llace would be a good pickup for 3 years.
The other side is that we could get 2-3 cheaper free agents spreading it out.
One guy I wouldn’t mind see is Channing Frye – he unrestricted and has decent skills and is young. That would leave money for a Parker, Hill or Barnes and maybe some for another big or a PG.
Don’t expect the Celts to use both Exceptions, I don’t think that will happen.
I’d like to see the Celts get Nocione, but think that is unlikely at this time. Maybe at the trade deadline.

Just think of it this way with the Ts
Only two of KG, Perk and Wallace can be on the court at once. And they all will allow the others to play less minutes. That will reduce all of their Ts.
Plus, how often were both KG and Perk T’ed up in the same game?
by Wide Load on Jul 1, 2009 1:03 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Perk actually really reigned it in. He had almost 10 techs in 2 months, something silly like that. He was a lot better at avoiding confrontations and keeping his yap shut. KG for all his yapping I don’t think was ever in danger of earning a suspension either…Sheed on the other hand…he just doesn’t care.
by Berkcelt on Jul 1, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
On the radio, Perk ...
said once in an interview that Sheed was his favorite player when he was a kid (i.e., 5 years ago).
I think Perk was just pretending to be Sheed, when he got all those techs. But he had to stop pretending, after Danny/Wyc read him the Riot Act.
But Sheed isn’t pretending: he really IS Sheed. LOL. I have a little bit of a hard time thinking that Sheed was the guy Wyc said the Cs had their eyes on, a few weeks ago, somehow.

True, but...
You can’t forget Perk’s shoulder problems, and KG by all reports is ready to go, but you never know. Sheed can start for either of them during the season when they need rest, so we would likely have much fresher legs come playoff time. I really like the idea of the inside/outside possibilities on offense with Sheed and KG on the floor. They both have amazing range for their size, and both are above average passers; on the floor together, the give and go’s leaving Ray/PP/House wide open on the perimeter….dude, it will be a beautiful thing.

Ha ha it must be strange to receive a visit from Ainge this late.
I totally agree with you Gainesville, I wonder what the common reaction is in these cases. :D
Still it’s good to know that Ainge is really serious on Sheed and that Wallace seems to be interested, I hope the future news about him are positive.
by Drucci on Jul 1, 2009 1:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
’Sheed’s like Artest, in that you’ve got a limited time before expiration. Or, he’s like a carton of milk, you can only keep it in the fridge for so long before it goes bad. I have no doubt that if he comes here, he’ll be a perfect fit next season, but he’s not the guy to have around when the wheels start to come off.
I swear, if Detroit managed to unload him instread of Chauncey last season, they not only would have been a much better team and MAYBE put up a fight in the playoffs, they’d still be one of the better teams in the East. ‘Sheed had just worn out his welcome. Trading Chauncey for Gordon and Charlie V (effectively what they’ve done) just means that they’ll be medicore for years. Guaran-Sheed.

Ray – House
Pierce – Parker
KG – Sheed
Perk – Davis & Powe

Mathematically ...
I don’t see how we pay both Sheed and Parker, unless Parker is taking the LLE. That would be a crazy-good FA signing, IMHO. Too good to be true.
Parker was one of the few bright spots on an otherwise unbelievably porous team, anchored by the over-rated RuPaul. He’d be a great “get,” as they say nowadays.

i was thinking
rondo-marbury
ray-house-giddens
pierce-grant hill-walker
kg-sheed
perk-davis-powe
my reasoning is if we offer hill the LLE it is more than he made last year and he’d be on a contender.
we could then attempt to trade tony and scal, maybe even one of giddens/walker/pruitt for another vet .
tony and scal or tony, scal, pruitt and a pick could possibly land us camby, steven jackson, luke ridnour and salim stoudimire, jamaal tinsley, tim thomas.
getting rasheed, hill/parker and trading making one of these trades would help the bench a ton. would it be enough to off set what other teams have done? only time would tell but we would be better

interesting
Hill, Barnes or Parker. Preferably Barnes if he comes in for LLE.
Move TA/Veal/Pruitt for Nocioni.
rondo/marbury/Hudson
Ray/house/giddens/
PP/Nocioni/Barnes/Walker
KG/BBD/Powe
Perk/Sheed.
Maybe not sign BBD if Nocioni can be obtained. Use Barnes to swing behind PP and Ray. Powe to bolster the front court when he’s healthy. That would be a very solid bench.

Hakim Warrick
This guy has got to get on our radar. Nobody is going to offer him much of anything considering his lack of hype.
I don’t get it, I’d much rather him than a guy like Charlie V, who is afraid of the paint and plays no D. And I’m all set with these one year rentals on 35+ year old guys. Both Parker and Hill are one year flame outs.
Warrick has the skill set to be sixth man candidate for years to come behind Paul and still play some PF. We’re talking about a shotblocker with great length, solid defender, decent shooter, former NCAA champion — why isn’t anyone pursuing him??
He’s entering the prime of his career and could be had right now for 15 million over 5 years, which would be an absolute steal for us. Get it done, Danny!
by D Dub on Jul 1, 2009 1:39 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Warrick is a good idea...
but we should be focused on our window for championship 18. If we can sign ‘Sheed and Grant Hill, we could be in great shape for a runner at another couple banners the next two seasons. Marquis
I’ve loved his game since his rookie year in Dallas. He was always all over the court, hustling and making plays. Haven’t seen him lately, but if he’s the same player he was, I think he’d be a great fit (as I’ve said in other comments on this blog), better than Parker due to his size and versatility. Parker is a 6’4" shooting guard, not a small forward, so Pierce still would have no backup besides Walker/Giddens. Daniels is two inches taller and can play the 1 through 3.
The only thing with him is the injury history.
by Tugboat on Jul 1, 2009 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The thing about Parker, for all his faults, is he can hit the three, especially the corner three. Eddie was the only guy off the bench (well Scal too when he wasn’t concussed) who could hit a three. Daniels isn’t a very good 3pt shooter from what I recall, and neither is Grant Hill. I’m not sure about Jamario Moon—I know he’s hit them against the Celtics but I don’t know if he is consistent. As for Warrick, I don’t know about his 3 pt shooting but I’m guessing it’s not a big part of his game if at all. I never thought of him as a 3 man or wing player anyway.

Wallace = options
Wallace would give us so much flexibility. We could have Rondo/PP/Sheed/KG/Perk out there at the same time. Think of the Defense that lineup would play for us…………..If KG or Perk needs a breather, boom, enter Sheed…..if we want a lineup of shooters, we go with Allen, Pierce, Scalabrine, Sheed, and Rondo to facilitate. Our all star point guard surrounded with 4 people who can knock down open threes, while stilll providing smart team defense and rebounding.
I would LOVE if we land Sheed. Hes a veteran who wants to win, and who still has a lot left in the tank. Look at his stats last year, they arent that much different than his stats in ’04 when the Pistons won it all. If we can bring in Marbury and keep him quiet all year, we can do it with Sheed.

A little redundant
But Jackson would be a good second option if we can’t get Marbury. I’ve been mentioning Jackson on these boards for a week now but not too many others seemed to find him to be an option.

he would fit well
he can score, handle the rock and plays fairly good defense.

Moon, Parker or.....
I would take Grant Hill or Matt Barnes any day over Moon or Parker. Barnes and Hill both played for the minimum last year, so there really isn’t reason to think they wouldn’t this year. Sheed does seem to be a good fit for the C’s, but, SA can offer him a starting gig while we only have a bench role for him.

I like Sheed
if he’s a 6th man. Him on the bench, plus a permiter guy like Barnes or Dhantay Jones and a DECENT backup PG and the C’s will be set.
I actually like Marbury, but except for a few highlights he looked reluctant to shoot when he was open. We already have 1 pg like that. 2 is a nightmare.
