Robert Swift Will Finally Play For Celtics

Welcome Robert Swift

...well, at least for the summer league team.  via the Herald

The Celtics also added free agent center Robert Swift to the roster. The former Oklahoma City/Seattle seven-footer, who joined the league straight out of high school, has always intrigued Ainge.

Ainge was famously enamored with Swift back when he was drafted.  (See this mock draft by Chad Ford)  Thankfully we got Al Jefferson instead and eventually turned him into KG and a banner.

I wonder if he's still doing MMA to train in the offseason.

As noted before, the other names include:

"guard Chris Lofton (University of Tennesee, Turkish league), Coby Karl (son of Nuggets coach George Karl, Boise State, Spain), Darius Washington (University of Memphis, Spurs, Czech Republic league), Bryce Taylor (Oregon, Italy), Kevin Rogers (undrafted out of Baylor) and Bryan Mullins (undrafted out of Southern Illinois)."

worst case = Patrick O'Bryant part 2

he’s got lottery talent and height

if he’s a bust, he’ll likely be a cheap one

Or at least he has lottery height.

I feel good about this, but only because my fantasy b-ball team was named the “McDonald’s All-Americans”, and the above picture was my avatar.

by CaptFamous on Jul 1, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

And it didn't even cost us Big Al or Rondo

Everyone has their obsessions. I actually think Swift is a much better lottery ticket than POB was. I’d be fine with him on the minimum as our 14th or 15th guy.

by johnnyrondo on Jul 1, 2009 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

why

a 14th or 15th roster spot shouldn’t be wasted on anyone that’s not being developed by the team. Swift is past that point. If he can’t legitimately make the 12-man game roster—-Danny should bid him adieu.

by slamtheking on Jul 1, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

my god

now THAT is BUTT UGLY!!!

by slamtheking on Jul 1, 2009 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

I suppose an invite to summer camp means Danny realizes he shouldn’t just jump at the first chance to sign him. not too sure he’ll wait much longer though.

by slamtheking on Jul 1, 2009 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

This dude doesn’t seem to have a youtube mix… what a loser.

by BudweiserCeltic on Jul 1, 2009 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

knee

His knee surgeries made him sloooooooowwwww. if he is able to recover, he definitely has NBA talent, though. he is a legit 7 footer with a legit wingspan.

by jdpapa3 on Jul 1, 2009 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

Our Bill Walton of 1986

Swift gets a proper haircut and dominates in the SL. Do we have a chance with him? He is tough to pass since he is a seven-footer with talent.

by GreenGrizz on Jul 1, 2009 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

Ummm where's the boys that count???

I’m talking Billy Walker, J.R. and Gabe? I didn’t see their names on that list at all. Isn’t this supposed to be Gabe’s time to shine I was thinking at some point Danny said that he was going to evaulate Gabe at this league and then make the decision whether or not to get his option or not….

by thebroc on Jul 1, 2009 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

I wanted to see all those guys, now the only people I’m interested in are Hudson and Swift. Maybe Sweetney too.

by Evantime34 on Jul 1, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Swift

This is OK, but hopefully Danny realizes that if Swift is brought on, he can’t be counted on to do anything. Thus, if Baby and Powe walk, even Wallace comes, the C’s are still going to need another big man. If Swift makes the roster, he needs to be the 5th or 6th big, not the 4th. If he can play his way into the rotation, great. But we can’t have another POB incident.

by Jon on Jul 1, 2009 3:21 PM EDT reply actions

YEEEEEEEEEEEEES! Finally Swift is coming home!

Seriously, I like it! I think he can make the roster!

I’m literally shaking with excitement.

I hope to see this guy suit up for the C’s, too.

WE GOT HIM, WE FINALLY GOT HIM!!!

Danny’s dreams are now fulfilled. A Banner and Bob Swift is all he ever wanted.

maybe

scal and swift can join together like voltron to form a red headed beast for us………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..OR we could trade scal and tony and stay the hell away from swift

Smith needs a gimmick ala Birdman....

When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"

Some Ideas

Most are in reference to his hair
1. Fire Starter
2. The Dragon
3. Giant Leprechaun
4. Red Headed Step Child

by Evantime34 on Jul 1, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

NO!! Not Another POB!!

If Sheed signs and BBD doesn’t – we should go and get the bird man. If we are going to have another ugly guy on the team please let it be the bird man.

by StealthB on Jul 1, 2009 3:47 PM EDT reply actions

Good Lord!

Danny has really lost his mind. I wouldn’t pick this guy if I was at the playground playing shirts and skins, let alone for a real NBA team.

by 420celticsFAN on Jul 1, 2009 3:48 PM EDT reply actions

man

its just summer league. relax.

by jdpapa3 on Jul 1, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I know

People are going to play this off as another one of danny’s go cheap for a project moves. But litteraly if we didn’t sign him, we’’d have zero big men on our summer league team. I think its a good signing, even better if we can still sign sheed or dice.

I do have to ask though, is he really a better risk then leon? I know he has more size, but guys leon was putting up 20 point games before he got hurt.

by beantownboy171 on Jul 1, 2009 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

Smokescreen

I don’t think Ainge was interested in Swift. It was a smokescreen; Jefferson was his target all along.

Having said that, Swift is a 7 footer with a good drop step. If he has any mobility left he could be useful.

by Brickowski on Jul 1, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

Po

LMAO. This guy makes Larry Bird look like Cary Grant.

by The Real Large James 2 on Jul 1, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

This guy has been Danny’s white whale. Never understood the fascination with him. It’s like Theo with Julio Lugo; what they hell do they see that everyone else doesn’t? Nothing, that’s what.

I don’t like this signing.

by a tommy point on Jul 1, 2009 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

Perhaps ...

… there never really was a fascination?

by TheGreenThumb on Jul 2, 2009 1:25 AM EDT up reply actions

What did he cost

What did he cost? Hopefully not much. Honestly, could he be any worse than Patrick O was last year? Not much to lose and who knows maybe he can play some.

by John70 on Jul 1, 2009 4:04 PM EDT reply actions

sl

summer league only at this point.

by jdpapa3 on Jul 1, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's promote Garnett to the front office, at least he's targeting impact F.A.s

I predicted this, and I’m not even happy to be right.

I guess Powe’s roster spot isn’t so valuable to the front office after all.

Swift couldn’t earn rotation minutes in a depleted OKC front court.

by The Walker Wiggle on Jul 1, 2009 4:08 PM EDT reply actions

Swift

The biggest problem with Swift has always been he’s been hurt. He has/had talent. If he’s healed he can give us something.

by liamail on Jul 1, 2009 4:14 PM EDT reply actions

With Swift’s injury history that wouldn’t be a good bet, but I also think Leon is going to be out a year. I hope Leon is playing in March. He has a lot of heart and helped us win a championship. Go Leon!

ummm

i saw a report that said both KG and powe are ahead of schedule on there recovery, that powe will be back sometime after teh all-star game

That’s good news. I hope they bring Powe back at some point.

Oh My God!

This guy is a freaking STIFF.

I’ve watched him play (when he was given playing time) on NBA League Pass.

He’s too slow and his game is less than BBD and Powe.

Let’s hope the Summer League separates him from the roster.

by BigT1942 on Jul 1, 2009 4:33 PM EDT reply actions

i think danny just likes to take chances on 7 footers. cant blame him cuz we need some size, just wish he’d find some good players with size

I’d rather have Powe sit on the bench during the whole season and give a moral boost to the team than having this guy play in green.

At least Leon would have better stats! ;-)

Anybody know where I can get some tattoos like that? I’d look AWESOME!

KG's minutes

I like Swift, but is KG going to be unhappy when Swift starts taking some of his minutes?

by Sophomore on Jul 1, 2009 5:19 PM EDT reply actions

ha

Are you even serious? Swift is a bad-ass-beast. Maybe when KG is done pissing himself.

by stevenfuzz on Jul 1, 2009 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Guess I shoulda made it more obvious – that was way, way not serious.

by Sophomore on Jul 1, 2009 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Averaging 24 games per season over 4 years. Has never played more than 47.

A career 61% FT shooter with over three times as many TOs as assists.

What’s behind Door #2, Danny? Oh, it’s a former lottery pick that ate his way out of the NBA…

by The Walker Wiggle on Jul 1, 2009 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

I bet you were upset

when Danny got rid of AW as well?

What was Powe’s FT%?

"Do you know that nonbelievers create the most positive energy?" Davis said

by Birdbrain on Jul 1, 2009 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, I pull for true Celtics. Why not?

And if we’re going to compare Powe and Swift… (Which, by the way, I can’t believe you want to…)

Powe’s 70% career FT% is substantially better. He also has far better eFG%, and Point, Rebound and Foul numbers per 36. (I’m forced to use the per 36 stats because Swift has never been a regular rotation player…) Leon also has 1 Boston Celtics Championship ring…

Now let’s bet on which guy is going to be playing meaningful minutes in March?

by The Walker Wiggle on Jul 1, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Neither but, I wish Powe was.

But when I got my big pants I realized life wasn’t fair.

AW was albatross for the Celtics organization and I wish they would have brought him back 1 more time only to trade him again.

Where the heck is Iverson?

Probably the wrong spot to post this, but why isn’t there any buzz about Iverson? He was the scoring champion, still capable of dropping 20 on any night and I think he won an MVP somewhere along the way. Why isn’t some team on the cusp looking to sign him? Hi Cleveland, you could use him off the bench to rest LeBron… Hi Orlando, you could use a penetrator… Hi Houston, you could use everything….

by funkstarrdeluxe on Jul 1, 2009 5:31 PM EDT reply actions

AI

Can still play and some team should pick him up. If not we should give a one year Vet Min. to come off our bench behind Rondo. If he wants a ring.

by liamail on Jul 1, 2009 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

coming of the bench?

I’m pretty sure he isn’t coming off any bench. He said this last year in Detroit, “hurt his back”, and got cut.

Statement guy

This guy is a statement guy. Too bad he rather do artstic statements rather than statements on the floor….where it really matters.

This guy is a bust. I rather spend the money on Leon Powe.

by cocofan on Jul 1, 2009 6:02 PM EDT reply actions

well, scal is definitely gone. can only afford one of those guys here.

by Fan from VT on Jul 1, 2009 6:22 PM EDT reply actions

In all seriousness, he could be a very good bench bargain. He rebounds very well, has great size, and shoots efficiently. Health is the only question (a major question) but if he grows into his body and stops getting injured, could be very good value.

by Fan from VT on Jul 1, 2009 6:26 PM EDT reply actions

Scal Gone?

Hey Fan from Vt…….how do you intend on getting rid of his $3.4M contract. This isn’t the NFL where you say good bye to a contract?

Curious as to how it will be accomplshed!

by BigT1942 on Jul 1, 2009 7:41 PM EDT reply actions

scal and TA will be traded away somewhere along with gabe pruitt to some team trying to fill roster spots but want to get rid of a “headace”

by mec1 on Jul 2, 2009 5:16 AM EDT reply actions

an Impact if he use this chance...

I can imagine why Ainge is intrigued in this guy – he had a huge Highschool-Performance and just gone to the false team… We need a strong body and size – it looks like he have that and this red hair matches perfectly to the Celts, we know the popularity of Scal ;-) He is a young guy and can learn many things from K.G. and Sheed – I hope he knows his chance and I hope that Doc gaves him enough playtime to prove his skills, than we know K.G. and Sheed will retiring in about 2 (Sheed) or 4(K.G.) years and than Perk can not be both a PF and a C. So give Ainge credit for this – hopefully a big impact for the future ;-)

I asked god and he said: L.A. will lose again next year!! ^_°
