Re-Sign Leon Powe-tition
The Rockets are getting fans involved in recruiting Gortat. Can Celtics fans convince the Celtics GM to bring back Powe? An interesting study in fan interaction (and I think a pretty good cause - as basketball causes go).

Too bad no one cares about online petitions.

sign me up
Keep Powe where he belongs. We have a bench that does nothing!! Is DA saying “nothing” is better than what Powe has given this team? Where did DA go to college? The dude is mental!!
What did you say to me paper champion?

Too bad.
I love Powe just as much as anybody. I love his tenacity, i love how quiet he is, i love how he destroyed the lakers.
BUT THIS IS A BUSINESS. He is getting let go to free up a roster spot, and save money on the payroll. I do agree it sucks on his end, but if you are a Celtics fan, and want nothing but the best for this team, then you should agree with this move. Again, I love Powe and would have preferred to have him healthy this year so we could have made a FAIR decision on who to keep, POWE or Baby. I would have gone with POWE.
Again, it sucks, but it’s life. I’m sure he can collect unemployment or something, and when he’s ready we’ll be ready to bring him back, IF HE CHOOSES. Goodbye Powe, Hello someone who can help us from the beginning of the season.

How Bout a Different Take
What if Danny knew Leon wasn’t going to see the light of day on the court with the expectation that even when healthy (some time in the future) that we would have enough depth (four guys) ahead of him, maybe more. And what if Danny knew there were other teams interested in Leon. Would it might be plausible that Danny is doing Leon a favor by letting him sign with a team where he would get more playing time?
We haven’t seen the roster yet for this season. Maybe Danny has players he’s shooting for that would be played by Doc over Leon.
Just a thought.

Yep...
This is more realistic. Leon is basically out for the year, and I think Danny knows that he needs to move on and fill the roster with solid talent. One injury kept us from potentially making the finals and Danny is going to be aggressive in building a solid team. He can’t be sentimental. He is doing the right thing; Powe will play again. He is too good not to.

can i start the petition to NOT resign powe?
Powe is a class act. Let me start with that. Seems like a great guy, plays with heart and soul on the court.
But enough is enough. 3 reconstructive surgeries that span both knees in the past 6 years. His playing days are effectively over.
It’s nice to be loyal and wish him the best, but this attachment like we owe him a roster spot is simply ill advised.
God bless and good night!

What about Celtics Pride
Powe has character. Rasheed has none. What happened to Celtics pride?
DA has to look in the mirror at some point and do what’s right because that’s also what’s best for the Cs. ACLs are fixed all the time now. And Powe is a great low post player
Sheed is an embarrasment and the opposite of what the Cs are all about
by Daveonthecape on Jul 2, 2009 12:11 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Great?
I don’t know that I would call Powe a great low post player. He has had his moments, but at the end of the day BBD is the better all around player. In all honesty, I don’t know if Leon was going to be back, bad knee or good knee. The celtics need to upgrade in that back-up position, or use that roster spot to sure up another position. Davis is by far a better defensive player and an equal, if not better, offensive player. Powe is maybe a touch better on the post, but davis has a jump shot. That spreads the defense, and that is a good thing with shooters on the floor. Davis has better basketball IQ than Powe, He is a better passer than Powe, and BBD’s played at a high level in the playoffs. Add to the fact that Powe has now gone through 3 major knee surgeries (3 ACL’s, I believe), and it becomes an easy decision.

Is this a joke?
Does no one realize the glut we have at the guard position, and the lack of depth in the frontcourt? Not to mention Powe is a proven contributor off the bench. It doesnt seem like we are going to pick up a mind blowing free agent, and if Powe can come back halfway through the season and contribute, I would gladly give him Gabe’s spot on the roster.

I Love it!
Leon back in green. It’s a smart basketball move AND the right thing to do…win-win as far as I’m concerned.

I would like to see him back in green especially if they are not able to fill in the 15 man roster with quality veterans which we are not going to go 15 deep i dont see why having Powe as the last guy on the beach for the minimum would hurt us. Its a high potential low cost guy to have. He is a guy that if he is able to recover and stay healthy can be a 6-7th man for years to come. Ill def miss him if we never get him back

You guys in Celticsblog have knack to make me start disliking players. As far as I’m concerend, the lobbying for Powe at this moment is ridiculous. If the FA situation isn’t going so well, then sure lobbying for him would be quite warrented, but at this stage of FA it would be very irresponsible by DA to sign him. There’s simply no space for him at the moment, it’s quite simple.

I am happy to see that the most common reaction to the petition is bad idea.
We can resign Powe when it makes sense. Until then, this is not a charity. We drafted him and gave him the chance to succeed. He was able to make a lot of money with us. Now he needs to try to recover and then look for a job.
by guava_wrench on Jul 2, 2009 12:46 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
have you looked at...
how many people have signed the petition?
There’s a big sentiment to re-sign him.
by winsomme on Jul 2, 2009 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not nearly enough of a sentiment for the team to decide to do such a ill-advised move. If Powe had not been injured, there would still have been a very big chance that only one from BBD & Powe would have been re-signed. The injury made the decision obvious.
I’m a sentimental guy, but I’d rather spend the money on a backup C or PG. If the guy can play again, than he will find a team. If he can’t, than explain to me why we should give him money.

seriously this is INSANE and is going way to far. People are all over Danny after he brought us a championship and actually gave Leon Powe a shot unlike 29 other teams that had the chance to draft him. It is not Danny’s fault that Powe has bad knees. He has earned about 2 MIL in his NBA career, probably much more than any of us normal folk will see in our life time, and I see people wanting to take up a collection for Leon Powe at $20 a piece to make him stay in the boston area. YOU PEOPLE ARE LOONY LOONY LOONY . I see people saying in the marines we would never leave an injured soldier behind. Well guess what, this is not a life and death war scenario we are talking about a game here , I swear to god some people on this board are INSANE.

It is a nice idea. It won`t have an effect but it is a nice tribute to Leon Powe…

He'll probably be back later..
Yeah way to state the obvious. He clearly has talent, but how good is it when your not actually playing? This is more of a realistic move in DA’s part. Much better to use that money on someone who’s actually going to be able to play. If Leon gets healthy, sure will give him an offer, but till then, focus on healing first. I don’t see any other team doing the any thing as well until he actually gets better from the injury he had.

it is a joke
he deserves better.
gabe drinks and drives no problem….this guys hurts himself for the team so we throw him out like garbage…

He’s a tough guy with heart. Powe is the antithesis of all the petulant young prima donnas and entitled 20-somethings in the NBA (and hell, that we see almost everywhere). He’s also the kind of guy that I like to associate with Celtic Pride. Cutting him and justifying it by a “win at all costs” argument tarnishes the Celtics tradition. I would hope we would hold ourselves to a higher standard, where we win AND keep our dignity.

Love Leon, but Danny's right
Every dollar we give Leon, remember, is two because of the luxury tax. So it isn’t the relatively small change I thought it would be. Because we’ve blown more money on worse types is not an excuse for signing Leon.
Most of us truly love a “mucker” and that is what he is. One tough, quiet guy. A great bench guy. But, an NBA player needs wheels and Leon’s got a worse future prognosis, really, than Yao.
I love the guy, but this petition is like an act of Massachusetts state house – playing with someone else’s money, playing to sympathy rather than logic. No Thanks.
But Leon, get well, good luck and I really hope if you are ever game ready we get a chance to reward you. No hard feelings.

Actually
The idea that every dollar the Cs give Powe is $2 is incorrect. If the Cs offer Powe a minimum contract, they don’t pay luxury tax on his salary.
If they could pay a statutory rapist $1.5M to sit on the bench behind Rondo (and pay the luxury tax onn that figure), I think they can afford to take a chance on Powe.

Woah Woah Marbury Didn't Rape Anyone
Stephon Marbury didn’t rape me says Decker
2007-09-26 07:20:00
September 25, 2007 — A former Knick intern took the stand in the sensational sexual-harassment trial that’s rocking Madison Square Garden and copped to having sex in a truck with hoops star Stephon Marbury – but denied she told a female executive she felt pressured. “Stephon Marbury is parked outside the strip club. He asked me, ‘Are you going to get in the truck?’ and I got in the truck,” Kathleen Decker said in the explosive testimony, her voice quavering. Asked if the sex was consensual, Decker told the packed courtroom, “Completely . . . I was in control.” Decker contradicted claims by plaintiff Anucha Brown Sanders that the former intern was distraught over her encounter with Marbury – and told her boss she was drunk when she left the strip club and felt she "had to’’ have sex with the point guard because of “who he was.” Decker didn’t waver in denying that she felt pressured, even when she was hit with a shocking Hallmark card containing a syrupy message to Sanders …
He was never charged with anything . You better watch what you say, people can be sued for saying stuff like this even if it is just on a message board.

My bad...
I didn’t hear the testimony, only Brown Sanders allegations. I didn’t realize Marbury was cleared. Thanks for clearing that up; it makes me feel a little more settled about Marbury being signed by the Cs.
Also, my statement was inaccurate on the tax implications of resigning Powe. The league would pay $30k of Powe’s salary at the league minimum. Regardless, they’re paying that figure for any minimum player on the roster.
I still stand by the need to resign Powe!

I fail to see what all the hub-bub is about...
The C’s need roster spots. As of today they have PP, RA, RR, KG, KP, TA, Scal, EH, Walker, Giddens and Pruitt on the roster. Those are 11 healthy guys. We all admit that they need to sign a long big man, a wing and a pg. That brings it to 14. Baby is also out there and so is this year’s draft pick. That brings us to 16 and that is already more roster spots than we have.
I have to imagine that come training camp the C’s will cut/trade one or all of the TA, Scal, Walker, Giddens, Pruitt and Lester group. But why do it now when they can be filler as trade bait or can prove themselves worthy of a roster spot in the summer league. Plus, FA just began and we may have different holes later than we do now.
I love Leon, but this is a business. They need to do what is best for the team and filling a roster spot for an injured player who won’t be back till mid-season is not a good idea. If Leon is healthy and available come December and the C’s have some underachieving D-League, back of the bench guys then you talk Leon. You don’t do it now.
I can only imagine that if we wasted a roster spot on Leon and couldn’t sign a big or BBD then these same people would be up in arms that DA squandered a roster spot. Can’t have it both way folks.
