Although New York and Phoenix can offer more money, the agent for free agent Grant Hill says the Celtics are still in the mix for his client’s services.

Agent Lon Babby said via e-mail yesterday that Boston, New York, and Phoenix are contenders to sign the 36-year-old forward and a decision is expected soon. . . .

Doc Rivers, who coached Hill in Orlando, has recently met with him. Celtics guard Ray Allen said he also has talked to Hill, and Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce have been in touch as well.

"I’ve spoken to him. He and I are friends,’’ Allen said. "I’ll have a conversation with him again. My phone lines are open.

I'm Indifferent

Hill would be ok, I suppose, but I’d prefer a younger player who might still be around in three years.

When the big three plus Sheed ride into the sunset, what’s going to be left? Right now it’s Rondo, Perkins and a bunch of nothing, except possibly BBD. If you’ve been watching the Summer league, you know what I mean.

by Brickowski on Jul 10, 2009 8:30 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree

Our summer league players have been less than nothing, I mean guys like Roy Hibbert and Ryan Anderson are lighting it up, yet Pruitt, Walker, and Giddens are struggling to get 10 ppg. What little faith I had in those guys is just about gone after watching this summer stinkfest. I’d rather have Chris Lofton backing up pg than Pruitt.

Get Him

He is the type of guy who we’ll be glad to have come playoffs. These aging all-stars are the right thing at this price. No mental mistakes and when the ring is in sight methinks they can muster what is needed. A younger player in a backup role will not get enough minutes to develop. The younger guys aren’t going to take a discount either. I’m sure his wife would like the singing opportunities that can be had in New York, but from a player’s perspective, playing in Boston with this cast, a friend as coach, and a shot at a ring: it couldn’t get much better than that.

If Hill`s wife had any talent as a singer...

She would have been “discovered” years ago.

Who launches a great singing career in their late 30`s?!?

by no kidding on Jul 10, 2009 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Where is this rumor coming from?

Tamia Hill is a Grammy-nominated R&B artist who has had a successful career for over a decade. I’m sure NY would be more convenient for her, but she managed her singing career just fine while he played in Detroit, Orlando, and Phoenix. I’m pretty sure she could pull it off from Boston. So, what I’m wondering is where this “Grant’s wife wants NY for her career” meme is coming from.

Accoring to some reports, Grant’s main concern is that in these last few years of his career, he really wants to play. He finally feels healthy and loves to play with Steve Nash. He’s finally enjoying basketball again. He wants to start and be in the game when it matters. I know we make the whole “wants to win a championship” thing into the be all and end all of sports. But, I think it’s understandable for a guy whose body stole so many years from his career wanting to cling to as many minutes of action as his body will allow him in these last few years. I’d love to have him, but I respect his concerns.

Keep searching, there`s got to be someone...

Better, younger, and healthier out there than Hill!

If not…Danny, Doc, Wyc, and Big 3 would have already visited Hill, and applied their “full-court press” by now.

by Title 18 on Jul 10, 2009 8:50 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I tend to agree. Because Hill's an established name, more likely than not, he's over-valued.

I’m hoping for someone who’s younger, taller, quicker, and cheaper. And on that note, I wish the Celtics had hung on to Brandon Wallace. By now they would’ve known if he could’ve been the answer as a defensive, rebounding, backup for Pierce. (And for that matter, I hope Ainge checks him out at the Las Vegas summer league.)

Hill getting old but

We are only asking for him to come off the bench to spell Paul and Ray. The guy will pick up the system in the first practice. No brainer. We still will have Giddens and/or Walker (and TA) around for youthful athleticism. Getting GH makes us the heavy favorite to get to the finals. Not getting him, it becomes a toss up with ORL and CLE.

by footey on Jul 10, 2009 8:54 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Coming off the bench can't solve everything.

Some people seem to think that growing old mostly means you lose your stamina, and can’t be out on the court for as many minutes. So fine, they say, bring the guy off the bench for limited minutes. The problem is, it’s not just a lack of stamina, it’s also a decline in physical ability. Sure, the mental side can compensate for that to some degree. But only to a point, and then it’s all downhill. A guy can have all the rest possible, but simply no longer have the quickness. And unfortunately, that absence of quickness can often be overlooked in the regular season, and then make itself terribly apparent in the playoffs.

by no kidding on Jul 10, 2009 9:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Need a wing that can defend

And Grant Hill is definitely not someone who defends well anymore. What the C’s really could use is an Ariza-like wing, one who is young, long and athletic with the desire to play defense. Dahntay Jones would have been a better fit than Hill, perhaps Antrhony Parker as well.

I’d look at Walker in that slot for the first month or so of the season even if it means putting up with growing pains.

false

Hill’s defense was good – and in this system smart wings are better than athletes

by Brendan on Jul 10, 2009 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m a fan of Hill but I don’t sleep very good thinking about his defense on guys like Lebron, Kobe, etc. etc.
I’d prefer Matt Barnes at all, even younger than Hill.

by Dennis Johnson on Jul 10, 2009 9:12 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with that, but Barnes is probably to expensive for the Celts and had otherwise shown a lot of inconsistence in his play but yes you are right: he definitely is the better defender, younger and faster than Grant Hill. It doesn’t matter, the Celts have decided to go “old school” – maybe a mistake but you never know, Grant Hill brings a lot of experience to our team and Doc Rivers had couched him ;-)

I asked god and he said: L.A. will lose again next year!! ^_°

Yeah I dont understand why we arent going after Barnes at all. Hes a solid backup.

No Talk Of Rasheed Press Conference

I was very impressed with what I saw at the press conference yesterday. It was the feeling I had when KG and Ray were introduced. There were some real good vibes there.

No thanks

Grant hill is a career NBA loser, and hes already showed his character in this offseason

I dont care if you would want more money too, thats ridicolous, he has more money then he could ever spend, and I dont care about his friendship with steve nash…if nash was a true friend he would tell hill to go win a ring in boston.

please, please, please dont sign this guy, hes never been out of the first round and doesnt care about winning, we dont need his corpse

by orr on Jul 10, 2009 10:10 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Oh and I also find it funny how rasheed wallace gets tagged as a loser who doesnt care about winning by some people and people continue to let hill of the hook for never even getting out of the first round

Wallace has been in the postseason 13 consecutive seasons, Conference Finals i believe 7 or 8 times, and of course finals twice

Hill never out of first round, TMac gets crucified for this…noone even cares about hill

Oh and another interesting thing, our 2 targerted free agents are from North Carolina and Duke….

by orr on Jul 10, 2009 10:15 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Just curious..

Why should the fact either of these guys are from North Carolina or Duke matter? You just got done talking about all the accomplishments Rasheed has had. Are you trying to imply Rasheed’s from a college who’s recently done well in NC, while Hill is from a college who hasn’t done so well recently in Duke? Or, do you mean Duke historically produces NBA players who can’t D? I don’t get it.

Move on and stop wasting time

I am huge Grant Hill and just like everyone I hope he comes, but I am tired of this waiting game. Anthony Parker is gone and there are 2 other guys that are younger that can play a perfect backup 2/3 we should be looking at right now, which are Matt Barnes and Linas Kleiza.

by StealthB on Jul 10, 2009 10:17 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'd be thrilled with Kleiza

But there’s gotta be no way we could sign him for what little we have, right?

by Silhouette on Jul 10, 2009 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And I think that's the whole thing about Grant Hill

He might not be our ideal pickup, but who else can we lure in with his upside for what we can offer? I don’t think we have any realistic good options out there with the names I’ve seen.

Udoka

If we can’t get Hill we need to immediately offer Udoka a contract, at the vet min.

Yes. A solid player that doesnt make mistakes.

As a Suns fan I hope Hill doesn't leave us...

but if he does I hope it is for you guys. Hill won’t win a championship with us so if that is what he wants, which I bet it is, than his best bet would be to sign with the Celtics.

by Pyromnc on Jul 10, 2009 11:22 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You're a Good Fan

You support a player enough to want him win a championship. It’s like when Ray Bourque went to the Avalanche to win a championship then brought the trophy back to Boston. Hopefully Hill would be able to bring the trophy back to Phoenix for you guys too.

by Evantime34 on Jul 10, 2009 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That would be awesome.

For me there is always those players or coaches that you just root for to win a championship even if they are on a team you don’t like. Grant Hill is one of them and even if he went to the Lakers, I wouldn’t root for them but I would root for Grant Hill. Since the Suns won’t make the playoffs this year, or if they do they won’t get far, I have to find another team to root for and since the past two season I have rooted for you guys Hill would make it even easier to do so. The only team I think I could root more for in the Championship is the Jazz as Jerry Sloan deserves a championship more than anyone but I doubt they’ll be there with the Lakers, Mavericks, and Spurs (which I hate all of them).

by Pyromnc on Jul 10, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hill may be old and all but if it was only about physical attributes then Walker would have seen a lot minutes at the backup three last year. Experience plays into the team defense and Hill should have that aspect down cold. Also I wouldn’t mind if my backup wing could score some too and initiate some plays. If all I wanted was defense I’d take Ross. We need some offense on our second unit or Doc will be rushing Paul and Ray back into the action too quickly and their minutes will pile up.

by celty86 on Jul 10, 2009 11:34 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Udoka, Barnes, Bogans. Three names to keep an eye on after Hill dumps us because of his dominant wife.

by P2 on Jul 10, 2009 11:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He's Overvalued & Undervalued.

Some will say that he’s overvalued by name, but by the same token he is undervalued b/c of the stigma that he’ll just get hurt. The last two seasons should show that he could be of good consisent value.

A couple of random, but pertinent, thoughts:
-We can’t afford a real lock-down defender type, especially someone who has decent offense.
-The Celtics have been very high on turnovers the past few years, and I’m all for acquiring more players who make smart decisions with the ball (rasheed, Hill, etc).
-Hill off the bench would provide a playmaker role similar to a PG, which would greatly help the Celtics.
-The free agency signing period may make it seem like Hill has been stringing us along, but in reality it’s only been severaly days. I’m sure the same several days have flown by for Hill considering it involves moving his family, etc.

I like Grant Hill and I think he’s the best available player we can get for our needs. I’m more than fine with him taking a week or two to decide, and I don’t think it’s been a large detriment to our other potential signings.

by TomHamilton30 on Jul 10, 2009 12:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

But what exactly are you going to do if he decides after two weeks that he wants to play in Phoenix or New York? Ross, Jones and Parker are gone, and I’m pretty sure that Barnes, Bogans and Udoka will also be at that time. And then the best you can hope for is Tony Allen-level players.

by P2 on Jul 10, 2009 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

don't wait too long

That is the biggest concern—>that waiting for Plan A to decide, Plans B through F are no longer available. Similar concept to Posey’s negotiations last year. Posey didn’t decide to go to NO until August and by then, anyone who could have stepped in for him that was decent (better than TA at least) had already signed elsewhere.

by slamtheking on Jul 10, 2009 12:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Time-sensitivity is the real issue to me, too

If we can’t get Grant Hill? Fine. Let’s just be told promptly so we can go after someone we can get.

by Tai on Jul 10, 2009 12:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

ray allen...

better be on the phone right now talking to hill…get him here!

by rayallen_35_24 on Jul 10, 2009 12:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This is just too obvious. Money or deep playoof run, two situations which are not comparable in the least. If he wanted a ring in his career, he would’ve already comitted to Boston. Plus he ruins our team with that waiting period – maybe this is what he wants.
