Jerry Buss takes offer to Odom off the table.
This is what I was hoping for. Jerry Buss takes things very personally and is upset that Odom has been talking to other teams and not the Lakers. While most UFA's probably do this to gauge their value, Buss often takes exception to players who look beyond the Lakers and he sort of goes Michael Corleone to his brother Fredo on them. Ariza is another example. I sure would have liked to have had a chance to make Odom an offer rather than Wallace but if this means Odom is not a Laker next year then they are not a better team. Here's the LA Times story.

Odom will stay, but I hope not!!
One thing I would not like is if they pull a sign and trade for Odom. That means they will get something for him from another team. I want them to walk out empty handed, and have the worst bench out of all the top contenders in the West. The Lakers front office pulls off good moves, but they seem to upset there players. We almost saw Kobe traded in 2007,and we saw Ariza leave due to them acting foolish.
I see them patching this up like they did with Kobe. If was Odom I would walk away, and try to go to the Blazers. That’s if Millsap stays with Jazz.
Ariza didn’t leave because they were acting foolish. If anything, Ariza was the one being foolish. He thought he was worth 7-8 mil per year. The Lakers knew he wasnt more than the MLE. The Lakers didnt want to get in a long drawn out process with Ariza where there would be no back up plan, which would force the lakers to overpay for Ariza. So rather than overpaying for Ariza the Lakers signed Artest, who took a pay cut, and is arguably an upgrade.
The Lakers got a better player who took a pay cut, and Ariza, who wanted to stay close to home, is playing for a lottery team for the same exact money. So who really was acting foolish.
Kobe wanted a trade cuz he want them to have a win-now attitude rather then rebuild slowly. Refusing to trade bynum to kidd really pissed him off.
Odom is like Ariza. He wants to stay in LA, but thinks his value is higher than it actually is. The Lakers are being smart for not listening to the panic, they know Odom isnt going to find a better offer elsewhere. Even if Odom does find a better offer, if the Lakers dont want to trade for anyone on that team there is nothing to force them to make the trade. They can simply just tell Odom we’re not trading you, you can just leave to play in Portland for 7.7 million, which is lower than what the Lakers offered. Since Odom wants to stay in LA, he is just gonna admit defeat and sign a contract on the LAkers terms.
The Lakers are actually being very financially responsible for not paying over the market price.
Still
If Riles can find a way to extract Odom it would really stick it to the Lakers who have had the best front office for years. I would like to see their luck, and yes sometimes it is luck, run out on this one. BTW, I don’t think Odom is worth what the Lakers are offering him now so he’s crazy not to take that deal.

Unfortunately, the Heat only have the MLE to offer. An offer far less than what the Lakers are offering. The heat are also only going to offer odom the MLE unless they can trade for Boozer too. I wouldn’t get you hopes up about Odom leaving LA. The Lakers pulling the contract was just a leveraging tool. It’s more than likely the Lakers will talk to Odom again when he admits he isnt getting better offers elsewhere, and would prefer to take the Lakers offer of 4 years 36 million.
why dont we
Do everythin we can to get Odom?
