Free-agent guard Marquis Daniels has committed to sign with the Boston Celtics, a league source said Friday.

Daniels will receive the Celtics’ $1.9 million biannual salary-cap exception if the Indiana Pacers aren’t interested in a sign-and-trade deal. The 6-foot-6 Daniels averaged 13.6 points and 4.6 rebounds in 54 games with Indiana last season, his third with the team. Daniels previously played three seasons with the Mavericks.

Daniels, 28, will help improve the Celtics’ perimeter depth. Boston signed free-agent forward Rasheed Wallace last week and remains interested in keeping forward Glen Davis

Really like this move

He’s a legit wing off the bench. Instant Offense. Has a great mid-range, pull up game.

Best of all we don’t have to try to guard him anymore. He ate the Cs alive.

Poor man's Ricky Davis

IMO

God bless and good night!

Ricky is completely done

Daniels was an effective player when healthy last year. Nothing spectacular but an upgrade for our bench.

OK let me restate

Ricky Davis with a Tony Allen brain. He has always struck me as a knucklehead.

He's not like Ricky Davis

Because no player in the league can possibly be as selfish, pigheaded, and just plain dumb as Ricky Davis. Maybe they look alike, and have similar playing styles, but you don’t hear about Marquis Daniels doing the dumb stuff that Ricky Davis did. This is a great singing; he can score, he can play positions 1-3 and he is a good defender.

Somewhere,

Sorry to post twice

And basically the same garbage, as well. But this is like Christmas in July!!! I really like this guy’s game, and he fills EXACTLY what I think we need -a 2/3 backup for Ray and Paul who can also defend. He’s ready to play 20-30 min off the bench yesterday, and I love him for it.

Can’t say enough about how much I love this move. Now let’s just hope it goes through!

I love this move. A good bakup for PP. I wanted Daniels, Outlaw, or Moon. Hopefully he is healthy, that’s my only one concern. He’s only 28 and will be a good bench player. I would let Davis walk. Now we only need a backup PG and # 18 us ours!!!

The Celtics [team stats] satisfied their search for a backup small forward today, securing a commitment from free agent Marquis Daniels to join the team for the 2009-10 season.

Daniels is expected to sign with the Celtics in one of two ways – either for the $1.9 million biannual exception or in a sign-and-trade deal with Indiana. The Celtics and Pacers are still hashing out those details.

But the Celtics have reached agreement with a potentially valuable role player – one who averaged a career-high 13.8 points for Indiana last season. The problem is that Daniels – often injured during his career – played in only 54 games last season due to a wrist injury that ended his season in mid-March.

The Pacers decided not to pick up his option in June.

by Rida on Jul 17, 2009 8:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

3,2,1.

That’s not a countdown. That’s the positions Daniels can play. Yes, he can play the point with the second unit if need be, and he can play it way better than Tony Allen.

If Bill Walker or JR Giddens is ready for prime time, Daniels con conceivably see time as the backup PG, assuming DA strikes out on signing a competent backup PG again this year. Daniels can guard the opposing SG and House can check the PG.

Of course, Daniels can play the SG or SF. Very nice pickup. Ainge has signed two guys who last year earned $21m for around 1/3 that amount. Two great value signings, which is paramount when your team is paying their top three players $56m combined.

Now, if DA can scoop up the recently bought out Earl Watson for the backup PG job, his great summer will continue. Then either sign BBD, or move him and the Scal/TA/Pruitt flotsam for a 4th big, and the team’s good to go.

We Be Set

Barring unforeseen injuries, we’ve set ourselves up as well as we can to win the title next season, assuming Baby resigns (and that’s becoming more and more likely). Well done Danny. Never doubted you a second.

Without engendering too much hubris, I’d like to note that all the Danny AInge haters are conspicuously absent from this thread so far. Well, let me say it then: the man had a plan. He had a plan all along. And now it cannot be denied.

by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Jul 17, 2009 8:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Danny Alway has a Plan

I was thrilled when Danny first got the GM/Chief of BB Ops. Back then people kept saying what the hell is he doing. He had a PLAN. His plan or plans are not etched in stone, they are a foundation that allows him to go in more than one directions as the situation warrants. it looks at both the short term and long term goals.

When he first came here he said he wanted to acquire ASSETS.. He did that – Big Al, GG, Ryan and draft choices and even Theo Ratliff was an asset. Then the big trades for KG and Ray. and VOILA #17.

He had a plan last year too, but it just didn’t work out like he or we hoped for. Now he’s working on another, by upgrading the bench to make runs next year and the year after. I like out team and depending on how the sign and trade works or if it’s just the LLE he may have some more moves up his sleeve.

Why Earl Watson when Daniels can play PG?

Id much rather get a legit defensive SF now.

by Marqui on Jul 17, 2009 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The legit defense SF just got signed

What makes you think Daniels can guard small forwards? He is 6’6" and has a good defensive reputation…and has actually played a lot of small forward in his time in the league. What are you basing your comments on?

by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Jul 17, 2009 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why would we want a guard who can’t break the rotation of the worst team in the NBA?

by Finkelskyhook on Jul 18, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What makes me think Daniels can guard small forwards?

Nothing. Which is why I don’t want him to play that position. Hes a 2/1 on a team that cares about defense.

by Marqui on Jul 17, 2009 8:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

But why not? That was my question. I mean, why not other than you don’t think he can…like what’s you rationale dude?

by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Jul 17, 2009 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My rationale is whatching him play.

He CAN play the 3, but he usually got torched on defensive in Indiana. They didn’t care because they don’t play defense anyway. Is it really that hard to believe that a 6’6 guy has trouble defending a position that’s usually filled with players that are 6’8?

by Marqui on Jul 17, 2009 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the height of your head doesn't matter...

It’s how you use your arms and feet. A 6’6" guy is CAPABLE of defending the small forward position in the NBA.

As for getting torched on defense in Indiana, it doesn’t matter because, as you said yourself, they didn’t play defense anyway. On a team like ours, I’m sure he’ll perform better. He’s been considered a good defender ever since his rookie year. I’m going to need a little more juice outta your rationale before I start believing otherwise…

by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Jul 17, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

That is a concern. We still have good depth, however, should he get injured. We don’t want to DEPEND on TA/Walker/Giddens, but if called upon because of injury I believe at least one of them would perform for us.

With Daniels on the floor

He’ll be doubled a lot. Or if Sheed is out there too, he’ll be doubled. Regardless, with either or both of these guys out there with Eddie, Eddie’s going to get a lot of open looks.

by Ritzybeanboy on Jul 17, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Daniels does it all

He played 30 minutes a game last season. Assuming Paul and Ray play 34 a game, that leaves 28 minutes for Daniels, assuming one of Paul and Ray are in the game at all times.

Regardless, House is a decent 2 in some situations. Not to mention the depth provided by TA/Giddens/Walker and possibly Pruitt. With one stud 1/2/3, it’s easier to fill in around the edges.

by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Jul 17, 2009 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree...

I love the signing, but I don’t think he is a good defender. Want proof? Watch him try to guard Ray Allen:
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Foh058IR3hE

That said, I think he has the speed to be a good defender, and this system and this team’s philosophy will get him on track.

by B-ball on Jul 17, 2009 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sweet

I too love this move. So versatile, exactly what you want out of a bench guy. One question: I remember Daniels being such a hot ticket four years ago. How come he’s not a bigger deal by now? Just curious. I figured his star would’ve been shining brighter now.

by Big_Easy on Jul 17, 2009 8:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

@ Big_Easy

His star hasn’t risen because he can’t stroke the 3ball. He got a nice contract after a big rookie season as an undrafted player (almost a point every two minutes on nearly 50% shooting, with passing skills and good defense) when he signed for 5 years and $30m with the Mavs. If he added the threeball to his arsenal, he would have been a more coveted player.

I don’t like him as a $7m a year player, but I love him as a $1.9m bench guy..

Why are some calling Daniels a point guard?

At least in Indiana, he didn’t play the position at all. The bulk of his minutes were at SF, which is the position he plays.

You still don't get it

The decisions we made in the summer of 2008 directly led to the decisions made in the summer of 2009. Nothing’s done in a vacuum. We scrimped in ‘08 because of the promise of ’09. And if KG doesn’t get injured, the gamble would have paid off…

Daniels played the point in his rookie season in Dallas and did well. He’s also a good ball handler and passer, especially for the wing.

Of course, the more pressing issue is on the wing, so that’s where he’ll be … but if needed, he could play some minutes at the point.

Very good move. My only concern is that we still need a 3 strong enough to give us 5-10 minutes on LeBron. Daniels can play some 3, but he’s way too light to cover Lebron. Walker is the only one who might be athletic and strong enough to try.

IDK if the Watson tweet is correct

Chad Ford is tweeting that Earl Watson is going to sign with Indy. Let’s hope Danny Ainge can jump in the way ot that signing. I guess if Indy throws the BAE at him, he might go for the money, but the vet minimum + a Finals playoff share + potentially one decent last multi-year contract after playing for the champs might make more sense economically in the long run.

Maybe Wayson should ask former teammate James Posey what kind of a payday one bargain year on the Celtics can lead to.

If Daniels can regain the form he showed with Dallas, the Celtics got a steal.

if we must, we must. But it would be HUGE not to have to trade a single contract. They are all so valuable come feb. Scal, Tony, House, Giddens, Walker, Pruitt we have no idea what we can get for any combination of these players to bolster the team in Feb.

There will be a ton of teams looking to trade for 6 mil in expiring contracts, thats scal and tony right there.

Actually, I'd sign-and-trade

because if we signed and traded for him that means we’d get Daniels on a good, relatively cheap contract of 2 or more years….

If he signs for the LLE, it’s probably only a one-year deal, with an eye towards cashing in next summer by playing a vital role on a championship team (just like Pose did).

You’re right, though, the expirings still have good value should we retain them.

oops

remove House from that list. He’s more than just a contract.

Marquis Daniels

Daniels is like a mini Mikki Moore, he could be a bust, he is a horrible defender who can’t shoot.

I don't think he is Moore, but...

he is a horrible defender. I am not sure why people are saying he is. I posted this above. Watch him try to guard Ray Allen.

To be fair

Look at the score, Celtics weren’t playing good D either, the game went into OT.

That is not really the point...

He doesn’t make the effort in most of those plays. He isn’t even close in most of those plays. Like I said earlier, I love the signing (if it happens), but he isn’t the defender some of the posts are saying he is.

I think your comment is based on both players having similar hairstyles

because as basketball players they are nothing alike. What do you mean?

by milt palacio's shot on Jul 18, 2009 2:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I figured he was joking

I think we’re all smart enough here to know that we won’t remember MM when we see Marquis Daniels if the latter actually produces something that’s not a turd while on the court, something the former made his niche doing in Boston.

Start putting up banners

We are NOT building a championship team. We are building a DYNASTY!!! Get ready for 2009-10 the year the Celtics wipe everybody off the map!! We are going to crush everybody. This team is super stacked Big Names include:KG,PP,Ray,Sheed,Perk,Rondo,Marquis,BBD plus House,Powe, TA. We are light years ahead of the Lakers and these other scrubs like Cavs and Magic. Daniels is a really good player, he was Indiana’s 4th or 5th best guy last year. My question is this. What is the difference between Trevor Ariza and Daniels. If anything Daniels has better statistics, so why are people paying $8 mil for Ariza and we get Daniels for $2 mil. This is a steal. LETS GO BOSTON CELTICS THE DYNASTY YEARS 2007-2012.

by star18 on Jul 17, 2009 11:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Daniels can't stroke the 3 and he's 5 years older

And that’s why Ariza got a similar contract to what Daniels received from Dallas when he was 24…

I'm agreeing with you that I like the pickup

but let’s not crap ourselves yet okay? I don’t mean to rain on your optimism parade but the Celtics are NOT head and shoulders above the rest.
Lakers: Picked up Artest who is a brilliant player, and Phil Jackson is a perfect coach for him. Even if they lose Odom (and I don’t think they will) Artest improves the Lakers’ toughness overall
Spurs: Jefferson, McDyess, Blair… they’re right up there again
Mavs: Kidd Marion Nowitzki can run with any team in the league
Cavs: Shaq – whatever – they still have Lebron
Magic: Vince – whatever – they still have Dwight

The C’s are in this tier, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We are not a dynasty yet. And somehow I doubt that Marquis Daniels signing for the LLE for one year will make us a dynasty. But I do share your dreams man, i really do…

by milt palacio's shot on Jul 18, 2009 2:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Personally, I dunno if the Mavs are up there

Same for the Magic, especially with Vince, especially against a HEALTHY Celtics team.

Everyone else, I’ll let the season decide that…and this is actually my way of saying I agree with you on the rest of the teams. : D

by Tai on Jul 18, 2009 3:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I fully agree

The Mavs, are we serious ?

Slow Down with the Excitement

Hey folks don’t get too excited yet. We have to see if MD can sustain his numbers of last year.

Brickowski is right on ………Watson is just less terrible than Marbury. I’ve watched him play at least 25 games and he’s inconsistent and doesn’t play good defense.

Remember we still need that other BIG to back-up our three BIGS. This will be the challenge and I hope that DA can swing a trade for a complementary player like Hakim Warrick or Chris Wilcox. We have some young players who have produced good numbers at the NBDL and maybe they can be swapped for either of these players!!

so far

from last year’s team that almost went to the ECF and could have gone to or even won the finals we have gained Kevin Garnett, Rasheed Wallace, and Marquis Daniels. While losing nobody of importance. This=titles, many many titles.

BBD will stay in Green

I really think BBD will stay with us to win more rings.

If this all goes through

you guys will fall in love with his game. Hes not a shooter by any means, but he is really crafty at getting the ball in the bucket.

by pacers33 on Jul 17, 2009 11:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

WOW

This is fantastic! Didn’t think we had a shot at him for what we could offer, great job DA! Next step is trimming the now dead weight of Giddens and Pruitt.

by Silhouette on Jul 17, 2009 11:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

there's only so much fat you can trim

If we have ~$6 mil tied into bad contracts so what? That’s a lot better than most teams can say. And unless we go 12 deep in our rotation there is no way to avoid so-called “dead weight” What’s the rush to drop Giddens or Pruitt? They could be valuable chips later, OR they might even, you know, play some minutes.

by milt palacio's shot on Jul 18, 2009 2:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No kidding

With Marquis Daniels, we have a 8 man rotation, and assuming BBD stays, which is more likely to happen with each passing day, that’s a 9 man rotation.

I’m no depth expert on NBA teams as of now, but you know what? We’ve won a title with arguably less. Maybe not in quantity (basically, we had a 10 man rotation our title year assuming Cassel counts), but definitely in quality. And what if someone like a Hudson or Pruitt steps up from our 3rd string?

Yeah, the fact that we have at least an 8 man rotation (again, not including BBD) before August says a lot as far as the C’s future. I’d give Ainge faith in whatever he feels is right for the rest of FA.

FINALLY!!

by P2 on Jul 18, 2009 6:14 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

There has to be a sign and trade here

The guy made 6.3 million last year. Can he really be willing to sign for 1.9?

by Sophomore on Jul 18, 2009 8:15 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That’s what I was saying in the forums. This must be a-sign-and-trade multi-year deal, we a) lose unneeded bodies, b) won’t have the backup wing discussion next year and c) can use the LLE for a good big/backup PG off the bench.

by P2 on Jul 18, 2009 8:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Love this pick up

I would watch MD at Dallas and thought you had better moves to the cup than Josh Howard. He’s silky smooth on the penetration and drives with fearlessness. This pickup was a steal.

marquis daniels

i like the move because he can play the point and the sg now get this baby davis thing straight and lets play ball….
