Around SBN: Hugh Douglas Admits To Stealing From Jaguars

Several Nets sources confirmed the team's interest in Davis, but all agreed the chances of landing the Celtics restricted free agent are unlikely.

What else is new...

No team, including the Celtics, are willing to pay BBD what he thinks he is worth. It’s a shame too, b/c I think the Nets have some value we could obtain in such a S&T.

If BBD comes back to the C’s next season I hope it’s under the qualifying offer.

If it is the qualifying offer, wouldn’t that mean that he’d be an unrestricted free agent next year?

If that is the case, I would rather have him be offered something, have the Cs match, and then we have him locked up for a few years.

agree

although a reasonable offer for 2 or 3 years would be fine – plus it would allow him to be traded if need be.

Nets And Money

Just read that the Net’s assistant coaches took or agreed to a drop in pay so none of them would be let go. Today some of the assistants are looking to go elsewhere. If things are that bad how can they pay Baby? Also, about the rumored deal with Detroit: a few days ago Ainge made the offer. Today it was Detroit who made the offer. Rumors are just great. I think, just as there is a trade deadline, there needs to be a rumor deadline. And let’s make it today.

Ainge should be credited.

Ainge seems to be handling this Glen Davis business just perfectly. He expressed his understanding that Davis had to go out and test the free agent market. He repeatedly expressed the team’s keen desire to have Davis back, but signaled his willingness to do a worthwhile sign and trade deal with another team. And now that Davis’s understanding of his true market worth is being brought down to earth by the inactivity of other teams, he soon should be ready to sign for something reasonable.

It’s hard to handle such a situation without a mis-step along the way. In this day and age, with 24 hour media coverage, it’s easy to say something publicly that the player could resent for years. Ainge is doing a fine job.

should he come back???

The fact that he is holding out can’t sit well with the big 3 or Rasheed, who just took a huge paycut to play for another ring or two. I am not sure how well he will be recieved in the locker room after all this. Maybe our best bet is to do a s&t and get something for him? I love his game and think he will help us alot as our 4th big but you have to wonder how the rest of the team views him now. I realize it is business but take a decent contract now, get another ring or two, then be greedy and get paid on a bad team!!

What would it take to make a run at Odom? lol

Baby Not Holding Out

To me, holding out is when you have a contract and choose not to honor it. Baby is doing his due diligence and it should have no negative affect if he decides to return here, which I hope he does. As to Odom, I’ve read that he is looking for money in terms of extra years. The Celtics can’t afford him and I don’t know that we need him. He and LA don’t seem to be dealing in a way that either party will be happy in the end. I think Baby would be a better fit for our team anyway. I just hope Baby is working with a good agent. If not he needs to talk directly with Danny, if he hasn’t already.

The Big 3...

would have done the same thing if they were in his position…. Ne ways every thing I’m hearing seems to be pointing to BBD coming back (more likely) or a sign and trade.

The vets and baby are in a different situation

Baby hasn’t “been paid” yet. Sheed is playing for another ring instead of retiring.

by GreenBalls on Jul 22, 2009 8:55 AM EDT reply actions

he will get his!

Baby will eventually get his. He will be a player that makes 5-7 mil a year in his career, maybe more. He will help his cause if he is a contributer on a championship team for multiple years. I guess it is just my rationale. If I could go back to my team and have a great chance at more rings, I would do that. When the window closes, I would go for the most $$$$.

I don't think its a big deal

Allen, Pierce, KG, Sheed have all battled over contracts (or gotten a max deal and been happy.) There is no sense in them getting upset at a guy who has made a fraction of there pay and helped them.

In terms of where this is going, I think we’re down to two possibilities:

1. S&T
2. Qualifying Offer

Based on BBD’s crumbling value, I don’t think any team will offer enough to scare away the C’s from matching. And I don’t think any team will offer a salary that they know the C’s will match – no one wants to spend a week in purgatory. So instead teams will try and work out a S&T – but the C’s alternative (letting BBD sign the QO) is a good option for them, so they can try and extract real value from the S&T and if it falls through no biggy.

I’d say its 75% BBD is back for the QO.

As To The Sign And Trade

I think this has been ruled out. Whether Danny or Joe made the offer of a sign and trade (if even true) and Danny wanted a first round draft pick or let it be known that that is what he’s looking for, no team looking to rebuild will do this. No team not interested in a first round pick, I think, has mentioned talking to Baby. Thus a team will overpay or Baby will be back here. As to the QO, I think Baby should go for a three year contract with a player option for the third year. This would be a negotiating point where compromise should rule. I think Baby needs to realize that Boston is the best situation for him. The other players on the team will make him a better player. Perk will drag him into the weight room after practice. The players on this team help other players. I don’t know if this is true everywhere. Baby knows the system here and it will be easier for him to improve here. Being a better player=being a better paid player.

Sign and Trade

No sign and trade is going to happen because Danny doesn’t want to trade him. In the end BBD is going to sign the qualifying offer and be a free agent next year.

Carl Landry

My memory is a little fuzzy, but didn’t this happen to Carl Landry of the Rockets a couple years ago? He was a restricted free agent all summer, couldn’t get an offer and very late Charlotte decided to throw a 3yr, $9M deal at him (which Houston obviously matched).

I suspect some lower tier team will eventually offer him a deal because that team has nothing to lose out on. If Boston matches oh well, if not they get a good young player pretty cheap. Honestly $9M is $9M, I can’t see Baby coming back for the qualifying offer when he’s a fourth option. He’s got to cash in now.

Is there a time limit

on teams making offers? Is it training camp or the start of the season? A date? I’m just wondering because it may get to a point where a team that hasn’t found anybody when BBD is the last viable thing on the market doesn’t mind having the money tied up anymore with a deal they fear the Celts might match.

Right now, it seems to be working that no other teams want to tie up that cash, but will it get to a point that tying up that cash isn’t such a big deal and so someone just throws an offer out there and forces the Cs to match?
