intricate trade idea

(Editor's Note: this is actually pretty decent idea from Trey - hopefully he did his homework and it works in the trade checker... - G17)

I know its just speculation, but it's not unreasonable. I'm basing this off of rumors that Miller may go to portland and new orleans expressing interest in big baby. here it goes:

BOS Receives:

-Steve Blake

-Hilton Armstrong

-1st round pick (NOH)

BOS Trades:

-Tony Allen

-Glen Davis

-Bill Walker

Star-divide

POR Receives:

-Andre Miller

POR Trades:

-Steve Blake

-Rudy Fernandez

-2nd round pick

PHI Receives:

-Rudy Fernandez

-Bill Walker

-Antonio Daniels

-2nd rd pick (POR)

NOH Receives:

-Glen Davis

-Tony Allen

NOH Trades:

-Hilton Armstrong

-Antonio Daniels

-1st round pick

I think this is pretty logical for all teams. Philly has been trying for weeks to S&T Miller. They gain some depth with this move, and Daniels' expiring contract doesn't hurt. New Orleans has shown interest in BBD, especially after the loss of Bass. Portland has shown interest in Miller and they don't give up too much here. The celtics get reasonable value for the rising talent of BBD, not to mention a backup point guard, and the pick could be valuable.

BOS Depth Chart:

Rajon Rondo / Steve Blake / Gabe Pruitt

Ray Allen / Eddie House / JR Giddens

Paul Pierce / Marquis Daniels

Kevin Garnett / Rasheed Wallace / Brian Scalabrine

Kendrick Perkins / Hilton Armstrong

^^That is a very deep and very dangerous team. Very versatile, too. I think we could still go far if one of the big 3 goes down.

<!--I know this is just speculation, but it's not unreasonable. I'm basing this off-->

Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

I would gladly accept, but..

I don’t see a 5 or 6 team trade going down. Anything beyond 3 is very unlikely. Great work putting in the thought though. If I could give you a tommy pt on this, I would.

what i would like better...

I wish we were getting FERNANDEZ and ARMSTRONG out of this, then just sign marbury.

by vitaminC on Jul 22, 2009 5:10 PM EDT reply actions

couple of questions

- What did Philly give up besides Miller?
- How did the C’s get Marquis Daniels without a S&T? Are you stipulating Indy doesn’t match a contract offer? With what’s left on the roster, you’d probably have to move Pruitt, Giddens and a pick to get Daniels (not sure if that works in trade checker). If that goes down, figure Swift and Hudson make the team as the 12th and 13th players.

I don’t know enough about Armstrong to know how good he is but I’m not sold on Blake, particularly if Marbury is still in play. The wildcard in the situation is the NO pick. If it’s unprotected (or not protected outside the top 10) it could be a decent deal.

But, based on what I’ve seen of the players involved, C’s giving up more than they’re getting. Portland seems to make out well, Philly (based on only Miller being mentioned as being moved) does very well and NO gets less than they give. I’m not thrilled with the deal. I’d rather resign Marbury and S&T Daniels while keeping BBD.
THAT would be a better team.

Why for the Blazers?

Don’t the blazers have enough cap space to get Miller?
I don’t think Portland is just looking to dump those two guys.

I’d do the trade so I dont have to see TA in a C’s uniform anymore.

by bob3698 on Jul 22, 2009 5:16 PM EDT reply actions

The Blazers would need to trade because Miller is a restricted free agent, so the Sixers would just match the offer.

by peiff on Jul 23, 2009 7:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Blake and a 1st round pick are the only upside for us

I like Blake, and I don’t think a 1st round player in the 18-24 range the NOH will be
picking will be enough to convince me this is a good idea. Hilton Armstrong isn’t even
on my radar, dude is a bust and won’t be in the league for much longer…

pass

would much rather have baby and walker. who is this and why do yo get to post trade ideas on the front page?

by ssspence on Jul 22, 2009 5:22 PM EDT reply actions

Blake - YES! Portland - WHY??

I’ve long thought of Blake as the absolute perfect NBA backup PG. He doesn’t take anything off the table – solid defender, decent 3 pt. shooter, good decision-maker, and very steady in both his effort and floor management. I would love to have him be our backup PG.

However, this trade will never work. No way Portland gives up Blake, Fernandez and a 2nd rounder for an aged Andre Miller. I appreciate the creativity of the trade idea, but it only takes one bad link to make the whole thing untenable – nice try, though.

by DJ_Hoops on Jul 22, 2009 5:26 PM EDT reply actions

Agree 100%

I thought the same thing when I saw what Portland was giving up and what they were receiving. There is no way Miller commands that many players in return either. Come on Celticsblog, there have been way more realistic trades than this one!

by Jimmy Toscano on Jul 22, 2009 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly...

…Portland can get Miller without having to get rid of Rudy Fernandez so there is little chance they would participate in this trade scenario.

by lrh86 on Jul 22, 2009 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep.

As a Blazer fan, my first response is to laugh. Giving up Rudy is not worth the slight upgrade from Blake to Miller.

NBA Live/Fantasy Trade

That’s what this trade makes me think of. In fact, I’d like to incorporate at least 2 teams from each division just to go for an NBA trade record. This can be done, let’s work collectively!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by MrTripleDouble10 on Jul 22, 2009 5:43 PM EDT reply actions

Daniels S&T

They’d turn around and use Scal or House (probably House) to get Daniels IMO. Blake and Daniels would squeeze House out of all his minutes.

by Brendan on Jul 22, 2009 5:50 PM EDT reply actions

Eddie would get his minutes

Blake would backup Rondo, Eddie would backup Ray, and Daniels would backup Pierce. They’d likely get the same playing time. The whole idea of getting a backup PG is so that House never has to play PG again, he’s so much better at the SG position.

by peiff on Jul 23, 2009 7:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I think we are getting too much to work

especially the first round pick. may have to switch 1st and 2nd round pick with philly to make it work better. seems like NO giving up too much.

by footey on Jul 22, 2009 6:01 PM EDT reply actions

There`s only ONE real upside to this trade....

It would officially mark the end of Marbury`s career in Boston!!!

by Title 18 on Jul 22, 2009 6:14 PM EDT reply actions

i dont like this move

lets keep walker and resign marbury. and also keep bbd or snf him for some other decent 4/5. then we are good to go

by aeternus on Jul 22, 2009 6:31 PM EDT reply actions

Hilton Armstrong? I hope not.

Not sure if everyone realizes, that he couldn’t reliably beat out Sean Marks and Ryan Bowen for front court minutes in New Orleans. A loafer with little basketball acumen.

by The Walker Wiggle on Jul 22, 2009 7:23 PM EDT reply actions

Hilton Armstrong might be as

rebound averse as any big man int he league, but he did play more minutes than Sean Marks and Ryan Bowen combined, unlike what was suggested above by The Walker Wiggle.

Blake would be a perfect fit as a backup PG, and that’s a more important need than the 4th big role that BBD would fill. Anyway, I’m hoping the Cs are keeping that role for Leon Powe when he returns from his knee injury just in time to get ready for the playoffs.

by TripleOT on Jul 22, 2009 7:33 PM EDT reply actions

The Portland community...

is in love with Fernadez and they would be giving up way to much for Miller. I would do the trade in a heartbeat, I like Blake but the #1 pick is what does it for me. Nice job!

by Little D on Jul 22, 2009 7:43 PM EDT reply actions

well....

Seams like everyone is as boredwith no-celtic summertime as me. This probably wasn’t worth being a front page blog entry, but thanks for attempting to entertain us in the absence of anything happening in celticsland.

hahaha

Giving up Baby and Walker….Walker is very promising and BB showed flashes this year, more than Blake and Armstrong combined

Hay celticsblog…I got one for you

Tony Allen
and
Scal

for

Tim Duncan
and
Tony Parker

that fills all of the celtics needs right? Put me on the front page!

by Nick Sannicandro on Jul 22, 2009 8:28 PM EDT reply actions

no need to mock

the scenario i created was atleast realistic. Right now, we have more of a need for a back-up point guard than a 4th big man. So to me, Blake has more value than BBD. Armstrong could fill the role for the time being as Powe may come back, and i believe armstrong has an expiring contract (could be wrong).

And besides, people hardly get market value in S&Ts, mostly contract fillers.

by trey on Jul 22, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

No deal

With Marbury maybe back. We don’t need a back up point. I’d rather have Baby over Blake.

by green20 on Jul 22, 2009 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

Yeesh Hilton Armstrong?

If you thought BB was a cry baby just think when KG gets on this guy for playing bad… KG is gonna lose his voice every night!

by Souwantmyname on Jul 22, 2009 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions

so trey.....

youd like to give up one of the more promising prospects in the sport, a guy who was tutored by KG, and has tremendous post up moves….for a complete draft bust, and a no name back up….ya that make a ton of sense …why not hold on to him and if you need to trade him, get something more useful…if you thought Mikki Moore was bad, then you musn’t have seen much of Armstrong and Blake

Christ thats like the Baseball forums…all the horrible trade ideas that come up, but at least in those the Boston team gets someone relevant that we can dream about. I’ll stick to my guns as Gabe as the true backup PG

by Nick Sannicandro on Jul 23, 2009 12:35 AM EDT reply actions

and not to mention

That youd like to keep Scal as your 3rd big man….im sorry but I’ll take an undersized big body than a 2nd outside shooting big man

by Nick Sannicandro on Jul 23, 2009 12:38 AM EDT reply actions

youre wearing green goggles.

I think you are giving BBD too much credit. He’s a solid player, but he’d hardly even get minutes here. He is behind KG, Sheed and Perkins.

Blake is far from a no name. He’s the perfect nba back-up pg. He’s unselfish, has good awareness and can shoot. Armstrong is basically a fill.

Now where did you expect me to put Scalabrine? He’s third string whether we made this deal or not.

by trey on Jul 23, 2009 1:26 AM EDT up reply actions

To me

It appears as if the Hornets and Celtics are better trade partners without the Sixers and Trailblazers.

Why wouldn’t the Sixers just deal with the Trailblazers without the other teams involved?

by timepiece33 on Jul 23, 2009 12:46 AM EDT reply actions

good work, but i’d definitely prefer baby and walker.

blake is nice, but he’s not worth those two to play back up pg, and i haven’t seen enough good things out of hilton to like him yet.

by pumpfake on Jul 23, 2009 4:09 AM EDT reply actions

trey

to be honest….ID CUT HIM
He’s not worth keeping on this team…You mean to tell me if this roster stays the same as it was last year, youd play scal over BB…BB will get plenty of time, especially when they are going to go light on KG’s minutes for a while to assure there are no knee setbacks, Sheed can play Center for minutes while he is in at PF

And as far as giving up Walker …thats almost just as bad…the kid was a top 10 draft pick before the knee injury. He has the capability to play well in this league and I’m not willing to give him up for a back up PG who will play limited minutes and produce little on the team for a guy with as much potential as Walker has. Hudson and Giddens wont make the team, Pruitt and Walker stay on, Giddens in if Scal is cut or delt with. Walker gives Pierce some air, Daniels can give both Pierce and Allen bench minutes, and pruitt give Rondo a short breather, as he is young and can play more minutes than the Big 3. Daniels is the key as he’s played 3 spots in his career. This team is all set and doesnt need to give away two promising young players for backups give me a break

by Nick Sannicandro on Jul 23, 2009 10:13 AM EDT reply actions

umm, i guess you didn’t get my point. Third string guys don’t get much playing time, you know. What i was saying was that he’d either be backing up BBD or sheed, regardless of if we keep BBD or not.

The celtics have a fairly narrow window to win one or two more championships. I’d rather not base my hopes off of potential. I’d rather have a sure thing. Blake would be an excellent addition.

by trey on Jul 23, 2009 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I like this deal - only because

It rapes the ex-wifes hometown team. Then again, they may be the only team with the potential to knock off the Lakers out west so I would not be interested in weakening a Laker rival.

Really unless we are getting Rudy Fernandez and or Travis Outlaw, I have no interest in dealing with the Blazers.

supremely classy. thanks for contributing.

I’d much rather have Antonio Daniels and Glen Davis than Steve Blake and Hilton Armstrong. Daniels has athleticism, high basketball IQ, strong defense and the ability to guard two positions.

Also, I’m confused as to why Portland would trade Rudy for someone they could outright sign. Philly really gets something for nothing.

My trade scenario:

BOS receives:

  • Antonio Daniels

NO receives:

  • Tony Allen
  • Brian Scalabrine

Then just sign Marquis for the bi-annual. How realistic is that?

by born.an.mc on Jul 23, 2009 1:19 PM EDT reply actions

So it looks like Portland is getting Miller without giving up Fernandez

Yeah… I’m commenting on a rather old article just because I’m bitter that I got issued a warning for a maybe disrespectful posting. So… sorry for my 1st comment. But this trade idea didn’t work for Portland obviously.

by Mahoney_jr on Jul 27, 2009 10:13 AM EDT reply actions

it was probably never discussed.

it was farfetched, not denying that. I said in my original post that this was just speculation. It’s summer and i’m bored. :/
