Rumor: Bowen May End Up In Boston

A source (preferring to remain unnamed) has indicated a serious flirtation between Bruce Bowen and the Boston Celtics. This may have something to do with the Marquis Daniels delay but it wouldn't be an either/or thing. Boston would like to get both of them.

The Bucks are trying to trade Bowen before his $4 million contract becomes fully guaranteed (only $2 million is locked in). Ultimately it may be in Boston's best interest to lure Bowen after he becomes a free agent although the Celtics run a slight risk that he's traded to another team before August 1st (and kept at his full salary).

Interesting...

I can’t imagine the team paying Bowen $4 million, though. That’s $8 million after luxury tax, which is just way, way too much.

I guess they could trade for him, cut him, and then try to re-sign him again in 20 days, but that doesn’t make a lot of sense for them, either (because they’d still end up paying Bowen close to $3 million and because there would be the risk another team would steal him).

But they can just wait until August 1, and then another 7 days to clear waivers and then sign him to a vet minimum (or LLE) deal.

by P2 on Jul 26, 2009 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, right...

That was sort of my point, perhaps left unsaid. If we get Bowen, the only way I can see it is as a free agent. It doesn’t make sense to commit $4 million to him.

I think

the point is that we run the risk of someone trading for him if we wait

Well

What if Daniels is signed to the LLE, then Bowen could be had for TA + Junk?

by Brendan on Jul 26, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

i think it would have to be through a trade because if released im sure he’d return to the spurs

im gonna be all up on you like a spider monkey!

by remembering9ergods on Jul 26, 2009 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Sounds great, I would love him here as a 5 to 10 minutes player or in case of injury. So we have to wait until August 1, and if he is not traded and waived, we would have to wait another 7 days to see what happens, because his salary ($4M) could be claimed off waivers by a team who is desperate for veteran help.

by P2 on Jul 26, 2009 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

If a trade happens, it’ll be because a team wants to unload a $4M contract for a $2M buyout. I’ll be shocked if he’s not a free agent, regardless of whether a trade occurs or not.

by theBird on Jul 26, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

Any way that...

We could unload some of out junk (Giddens, Pruitt, etc) for him? Would love to see him as a defender and burying threes from the corners for us.

by Tradetime on Jul 26, 2009 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

I think you could do TA + Pruitt and have the numbers work, but I bet you can sign him for $1M in a couple days; why do a trade? You’ve got to think we’ve got the perfect role for him here; no need to play a ton of regular-season minutes, he can help mentor Giddens and Walker in the “art” of playing D, he can have a bigger role in the playoffs on fresher legs, we’ve got a helluva good chance of getting him one last ring.

Think about this rotation for a minute, how reviled we would be around the League…. ’Sheed, KG, Perk, Rondo, Bowen, even Pierce… remind anyone else of the Bad Boy Pistons? ;)

by theBird on Jul 26, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I would glady take Bruce Bowen but...

if we could get Warrick (which I doubt) i would take him in a heart-beat over Bowen… But since we probably can’t get Warrick I would love to get Bruce!

by Mike-Dub on Jul 26, 2009 3:10 PM EDT reply actions

I think the headline is misleading.

If Bowen becomes a free agent, he’s going back to San Antonio. I believe I read that somewhere about a month ago.

by Bankshot on Jul 26, 2009 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

I thought he and Pops had a falling out? I was thinking it was inevitable he went back to SA as well, but someone indicated otherwise.

by theBird on Jul 26, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

How is the headline misleading?

Jeff has a current source saying this may happen. If you haven’t heard anything in a month (which I’m sure was speculation in the first place), doesn’t that leave open the door that something could have changed?

Also, of course, Jeff labeled this as a rumor.

As a Spurs fan, I can tell you this: The Spurs have 15 players under contract already. Bruce also ended up getting a lot of DNP-CD’s toward the end of the year. He can still play, but a lot of us suspect something was going on behind the scenes between him and Pop.

This is excellent news

Whether we get Bowen or not, I’m glad the Celtics FO isn’t settling with Daniels as their main defensive wing off the bench.
Man, it’s really nice to have a competent FO.

How old is Bowen?

Perhaps his lockdown “D” ain’t what it used to be? Gary Payton, one of my all time favorite players who did not wear a Celtic uniform long, was a great defender but Father Time catches up with all men. Can Bowen be very far ahead of Father Time? Is there anybody over 40 we could get just to have someone not in their 30’s?

Is it Soup Yet?

he's not the lockdown guy he once was

but if TT can make Ray Allen look like a defender, what could he do with Bowen

thats also why I don’t write off Big Ben Wallace either (not a rumor, just a thought)

I’d love to see Bruce Bowen head back to San Antonio. After all he’s accomplished there, I’d love to see him end his career with the Spurs.

I would be very happy with Bowen in a Celtics jersey though, he’d be a good second wing off the bench. Great depth.

Also, I think it’s a long shot that any team trying to acquire Bruce Bowen will want to keep him on their team.

Milwaukee will want a talented young player (like Amir Johnson) back in return for Bowen, to make it worthwhile passing up on cutting that partially guaranteed contract and saving some valuable money. It’s hard to imagine someone giving up that type of talent for an aging player like Bruce Bowen. If someone is making a Bowen trade, it’s incredibly likely that they’re doing it for cap savings.

I think it’s best to wait it out and try to acquire Bowen after he’s waived by Milwaukee or whoever his new team is.

by Who on Jul 26, 2009 4:04 PM EDT reply actions

Ditto

This is the post I was going to write, but I decided to check if someone beat me to the punch.

I doubt anyone is interested in giving up talent in order to pay Bowen $4m. If he gets traded, I’m expecting him to still get cut.

I would be surprised if there is a trade done.

That’s too much money for him. Maybe a few years ago. I would want him cheap, and for some extra depth, and that could really help Ray for extra time on the bench. I want them to focus on Daniels deal is 100% done, and keep Baby.

if they dont send anyone to the pacers

for daniels..he takes up the LLE…that leaves walker, giddens and tony on the team still. no way those guys stay…they are wasted roster spots…maybe they can get something later for tony…but he would be just taking up space on the bench…they need to move tony as soon as possible…esp with baby maybe leaving

First you guys get ‘Sheed, and now this? Bruce can still be a huge factor on the defensive end(watch game footage of the Spurs’ only playoff win this past season for evidence) – this would be a pretty big deal for you guys.

Bowen may be one of the few players in the league that I would have trouble rooting for. I have just seen so many dirty plays from him that I have gotten to dislike him as a player. But if he is a Celtic, I guess I could learn to like him, but it won’t be easy. I know that Ray doesn’t like him because of 2 separate plays he felt were dirty against him.

Perk and Powe... the Next Big Thing

by FLCeltsFan on Jul 26, 2009 6:23 PM EDT reply actions

bowen was too old 2 years ago

there are still a few impact players available for LLE-level money. joe smith, for example, is a quality strech-big who can knock down shots and defend. bowen makes us deeper, but not better.

by hooray on Jul 26, 2009 6:32 PM EDT reply actions

Hi

Who’s out there that can make us “better” for the LLE? Please tell me. I figured that at this point, we WANTED to be deeper.

We have one of the best starting lineups in the league, and then we have a great sixth man in Rasheed Wallace. Add in Eddie House, bring in Marquis Daniels and god knows who else…we’re a top 2 team in the NBA, already! And if we make the NBA Finals and the Lakers don’t have Odom…oh man!

Point being, we’re good as it is. I mean really good. I mean GREAT. Who we get now is pure gravy, and that may be all we get with just the LLE and veteran minimums.

Now, Smith? I think it’s been said here before that Joe Smith doesn’t wanna be in Boston; don’t hold me to that. People want Warrick, but he may be too expensive. Bowen may be as good as we can get with the money and exceptions we have left, and unfortunately, that’s not a lot.

by Tai on Jul 26, 2009 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

here are 4 guys i'd rather have than bruce bowen

all of which could probably be had for bowen-type money:
flip murray
von wafer
tyronn lue
rashad mccants
…and that’s just guards.

bowen is a body, which is fine. but i think there are more talented bodies to be had for the same dollars.
obviously we’re a top team. cleveland, orlando and LA are still scary. all the top teams got better. danny is still trying to make moves, which is great – i think we can do better than bowen.

by hooray on Jul 26, 2009 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Milwaukee could pay him $2m

and get nothing, or trade him to Boston for TA and Pruitt, gut Pruitt, and have TA for the entire year for 500k more than they would have paid to buy out Bowen.

They’d probably prefer to wait for him to get bought out, and then sign Bowen for the vetmin. I really like him as a 10th man and defensive specialist off the bench. Bowen would be a great cooler when an opposing wing player starts to go off. He’s also good at getting in the opposition’s head. The sweet three point stroke from the corner won’t hurt either.

That’s where Bowen is going 30 days after he clears waivers.

by Brickowski on Jul 26, 2009 7:26 PM EDT reply actions

Not sure if you've been reading

But rikiddo said the Spurs already have 15 players under contract; that doesn’t include Mr. Bowen. Say what you want about him possibly (or not) coming to the C’s, but if what rikiddo says is true, the Spurs don’t seem like an ideal alternative for either party. Just saying.

by Tai on Jul 26, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Spurs Roster Size

I count 14 players on the Spurs roster. Is ESPN missing someone?

That includes two players – Malik Hairston and Marcus Williams – who are, well, disposable.

I don’t see the Spurs roster stopping them from adding Bowen if they want to have him back.

bowen isnt as good as he was several years ago but he’s still good. he would fit our team GREAT and would improve team defense, bench defense. i believe we would have to trade for him because if released he would likely go back to the spurs.

daniels, bowen, wallace can all play defense. if we did do the baby for chandler deal holy hell what a defensive team we would have!

As much as I hate the Spurs, and Bowen, I'm for this

I really do despise the spurs and their organization more than the yankees or any other organization. And I’ve never liked Bowen because he is indeed a dirty player.

At quick glance I would say no to him. But, upon further thinking I’m all for it. Here is why:
- I would rather have him in the game than Tony Allen. By default, this makes our bench deeper. There is nothing wrong with trying to get deeper.
-He’s still better than some people on here give him credit for, which has been confirmed by the few spurs fans who have shown up to post here.
-I would rather have Bowen on our team than play against him, quite honestly.
-I’m hoping he follows up the Wally kick-to-the-face with a Lebron kick or something lol. Maybe a Tony Parker ankle breaker? Or potentially a new favorite.. a handful of sand in Kobe’s eyes. I kid of course, but the theme is the same… like a dirtbag lawyer, I’d rather have him on my side.. even if I can’t stand him.
