Recommended Reading: The Last Great Celtic

The Truth is, Red would be proud.

Very nice article by Red's Army called Paul Pierce: The last great Celtic

Here's a blurb, but the article is worth the read.

I know there will be other guys who wear this uniform for their entire careers.  Maybe a few of them will pass Pierce on some of the team's all-time lists.  Some will have their numbers raised to the rafters.  But none of that matters.  It doesn't matter if that guy is the best player in Celtics history.  He's still not going to be what Paul Pierce is now.  That's because Paul is the last of them to know Red Auerbach.

The Celtics Dancers? Oh yeah, they didn’t know Red.

Red's dead. Move on

Paul is a terrific player. Had a bad patch but has shown true Celtic pride overall. But, he’s great because he knew Red? Clearly your handle shows your affection and no insult intended but which Red? The one that thought Joe Forte was a steal or the Red that signed Larry Bird, and traded for Kevin and Chief and all those before that. Red wasn’t good for a long time after he was spot on for years. Will happen to me and you too. Get a little perspective. Pierce and Red mean nothing.

Yeah that comment is one I can't believe I read?

I have not read the article yet but any article about Red has to be good. Nice Picture too with the cigar.

Man, that comment just blows me away.

Is it Soup Yet?

Troll?

I mean, really Wildblu1, that’s just totally, absolutely, 100% ridiculous.
Get a little perspective.
Get a little class.
Get a little something, because your comment is insulting.

Disturbing….

did you start watching once KG came?

by latin on Jul 29, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

You've got to back off that statement

Really. Sleep on it. Read it again in the morning. And maybe apologize for being drunk and bitter, probably about something else, and taking it out on two legacies that in a lot of ways define the Boston Celtics -even if Pierce only for this particular era.

If you can’t do that, I just don’t see why you’re a Celtics fan. For Gino Maybe?

I don’t exactly agree with the reasoning of the article, but I certainly agree with the sentiment as any Celtics fan should be able too.

I hate to pile on...

… but what a comment to make. It’s practically sacriligious. And the thing is, Wildblu, I was lately noting how many sensible things you’d been saying lately. Let’s just chalk this up to an odd mood or something.

Red

is a legend and who are you to say he isn’t. I can’t believe you said that. Thats disturbing.

Joseph Forte was drafted in 2001...

Chris Wallace was the Boston GM at the time.

#34 & Red -

I’ve thought about this quite a bit, Paul & Red ‘did’ know each other, and I think deep down, we all know that means a lot.

Pierce is an excellent Celtic, the reason he’s the ONLY shirt my 5-year old son has…

It means something to be a Celtic, more so than any other franchise in the league…I think.

Everyone should do themselves a favor and read “Let Me Tell You A Story” about Red…perhaps Wildblu1 should do that.

Thank you Paul for all your hard work.

Don't worry, guys...

Paul has another 4 elite years in him and then another couple years on top of that.

Him and KG together can easily bring another 3 rings to Boston.

Basically Paul and Rondo alone carried the Celtics to 7 games against the Magic who went to the Finals…

I’m not worried at all. Paul Pierce has a long way to go with this franchise and a lot more greatness to bring.

Great to see an article like this

Like I said above, I agree with the sentiment more than the reasoning, but it’s great to see some focus on Pierce. It just seems like he’s been overshadowed since KG showed up, while to me he’s the heart and soul of this franchise right now -the TRUE Celtic.

I’m a huge, obnoxious, borderline obsessive fan of the Celtics, Patriots and Red Sox (and if the Jacobses ever sell the Bruins… we’ll see) but I’m also a notorious cheap skate (re: poor) and buy the $20 T’s instead of the $70+ official jerseys. Pierce’s is the ONLY exception I’ve made to that rule. Nice to see him getting some love.

Sorry Guys

Like I said, no insult intended. Didn’t mean to touch the third rail of Celtic fans. Didn’t mean to degrade Red’s many years of beating his competition. I’m certainly a Celtic fan of Red and his day and Pierce and his day. Just thought the link of Red and Pierce in the context of that’s what made Pierce uniquely great was…well…weak.

mcpu40, no offense but

Like I said, sorry that so many took insult from my comment. But No, I don’t think I need to read sports books to find inner light.

by Wildblu1 on Jul 29, 2009 9:43 PM EDT reply actions

I like the sentiment of the article

I agree that being the last star who knew Red give Pierce a unique place. But I do have to disagree with the wording. “Last Great Celtic” should probably be replaced with “End of an Era.” I love Red as much as anyone and agree that Pierce will mark the bookend of an unprecedented run of running a team. But that doesn’t mean he’s the last guy who gets to be considered great.

Don’t normally get hung up on semantics but just thought it’s a little unfair to the future guys.
