Hedo Throws a Curveball
It was originally reported that Hedo would sign with the Portland Trailblazers. It was also reported that Marion was close to a deal with the Raptors. All that changed just now.
Source: Turkoglu changes mind on Blazers - NBA - Yahoo! Sports
Free agent Hedo Turkoglu(notes) has backed out of his commitment to the Portland Trail Blazers and could be signing with the Toronto Raptors, a source close to the talks told Yahoo! Sports on Friday night. Turkoglu had agreed on a five-year, $50 million deal with the Blazers, but changed his mind and could be headed for a five-year, $56 million deal with the Raptors. Toronto would have to renounce three free agents – Shawn Marion, Carlos Delfino and Anthony Parker – to create the cap space for Turkoglu. Apparently, the Blazers are already busy exploring other free-agent options for the $9 million in salary-cap space. Five years ago, Turkoglu was close to signing with the Phoenix Suns that now-Toronto GM Bryan Colangelo was running, but changed his mind and went to the Orlando Magic.
So now I believe that means Marion, Delfino, and Parker are all unrestricted free agents.

Not just unrestricted
But Toronto can not sign them now.
Didn’t know that news about Hedo and the Suns years back. They might have won a title with him.

BUT
They could now sign Shawn Marion with the MLE….

Didnt Shawn Marion
Turn down way more than the MLE from Toronto (around 8million).
He also doesnt seem the type that would give up money for wins…if you know what i mean

I’m beginning to wonder how many there actually are of that “type.”
by no kidding on Jul 3, 2009 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The opposite?
Didn’t the Raptors pull their offer? Marion was about to sign for $8M per, and then they pulled it to sign Turk.
by dslack on Jul 4, 2009 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The offer was $32-34 million over four years. The MLE hasn’t been announced yet but it’s expected to be worth $33.5 million over five years.
So it’s one year difference. When Marion becomes a free agent at that point, he’ll be 35 years old. He is already in decline and his game is based on athleticism. How much does he earn on that next contract? The LLE? veteran’s minimum?
There wasn’t much difference between the offers. If Toronto added a fifth year, there would be a large difference.

excellent
he will fit in well with toronto. I just hope the cavs don’t try to sign Marion.

why
would toronto pay him 56M??? Last time I checked, Bosh is going to walk, and they have zero talent especially now having to make Marion Carter and Delfino UFA. Do they think Hedo will carry them to the promised land?
God bless and good night!

re: why
They don’t want to be perpetually rebuilding. They believe with Hedo, young Italian Center, Bosh, and Calderon they can be a quality playoff team this year and convince Bosh to stay. They have to overpay a little b/c most NBA players don’t want to play in Canada and the taxes. If they don’t sign anyone, they will lose Bosh and be back to sucking for many years.

What Hedo TRULY cares about
When Robert Horry shot a killer three against Sacramento… Hedo basically did nothing.
When Derek Fisher hit 0.4 against San Antonio… Hedo was much more vocal and much more active in his role as a player.
When Derek Fisher his those huge threes against Orlando… Hedo was the Most Improved player or Orlando’s fourth quarter stud.
(If you youtube those videos) he was there ON the court every single time)
However, every single time.. his role and importance to the team has increased.
Staying at Orlando behind Dwight, Jameer and Vince? With Rashard being clutch as well? He’s just one of five.
Going to Portland… he’ll be behind Brandon Roy, Lamarcus and possibly Greg Oden.
However… at Toronto? He will be number two behind Chris Bosh… and during the fourth quarter… probably the man.
Considering the fact that this is not the first time he has backed out of a deal… it is obvious that Hedo knows how to be in the best position to better his stats and better his skills by putting himself in situations where his skills can develop.
Okay, the argument can be also said that behind every great man is a great woman. So… Hedo’s wife (who followed him around the world and around the league probably used the argument of I deserve to go where I want… because I have given all what you want. Plus Toronto is much more beautiful than Portland and much more appealing to a European like Banu than the rainy city of Portland.

I mentioned a trade to Portland
in another thread that would send the Blazers Gabe Pruitt and Scal for Outlaw and Fernandez with the thinking being that the deal could save the Blazers over a million dollars that they could throw Turk’s way. That would be close to an extra $7-8 million over the length of the contract.
I bet Portland wishes they had that $7-8 million available to them now. Quick Danny get on that phone!!!! LOL

This trade borders on the comical
(from Portland’s perspective). They are the last team that would be trying to dump salary this year.
Dictated, not read. The management.

Portland loves...
…Fernandez. Never mind that but they wouldn’t give up Outlaw for Pruitt and Scal.
by Little D on Jul 4, 2009 7:17 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Portland should never have picked up those team options on Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw.

Nice move Hedo
6 million was the deciding factor between winning and irrelevance.

$$$ or Ws
All along, Hedo has been saying he puts taing care of this family in the first place. So I am not surprised he goes for more $$ than Ws. Plus, in a smaller pond, he will be a bigger fish.
Now, do we have any chance in getting Marion?
by 33-32-00 on Jul 4, 2009 8:26 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
His family would survive on 50 million more than likely.
Same old NBA.

Im still confused as to why the magic didnt do everything they can to re-sign him…this guy ran their offense better then jameer nelson and has great chemistry on the court with both dwight howard and rashard lewis…..
or maybe i shouldnt be confused about anything a team that benches anthony johnson once they get to the finals for a guy that hasnt played in 4 months does…
And I would much rather he go out west then in our division
by orr on Jul 4, 2009 9:27 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He wanted big money and he isn’t worth 11 mil per year, nor could we sign him for that amount without screwing ourselves for several years financially. Turk’s value is way overinflated in this market.
As far as chemistry yeah, he had chemistry. But he also hurt the team by missing D12 in the post way too many times, holding onto the ball and hurting the offensive flow, and taking wild shots at the most inopportune times. I like the guy as a player, but I’m glad we didn’t waste 5 years and 11 mil on a guy who isn’t a true “star”

Shawn Marion
Shawn Marion is in play.
He will almost certainly be signing a five year mid level exception contract this summer.
The Celtics would have a very good chance at getting him.

Marion Signs for MLE
No team with Cap space is going to pay him a lot. I bet he ends up signing a one year MLE deal. That’s bad news for Celtics fans because he could go to another contender to be a 6th man.

Oh, a one year deal is better than a multiyear one, good thinking.
